After finishing April with back-to-back looks at stylish vampire films like The Hunger and Ganja & Hess, we’re kicking off May a film we’ve actually discussed before (in written form): Fred Dekker‘s 1986 classic Night of the Creeps!
Night of the Creeps sees fraternity pledges Chris (Jason Lively) and Jc (Steve Marshall) take part in a hazing prank, only to find a frozen body filled with alien slugs that escape and begin to take over everyone on campus. They must team up with a cop with a haunted past (Tom Atkins) and Chris’ new crush Cindy (Jill Whitlow) to stop the invasion before it’s too late.

Fred Dekker, the writer and director of the 1986 horror film Night of the Creeps, is planning a sequel that will bring back the original cast! That cast of the original film includes Jason Lively, Steve Marshall, Jill Whitlow, Allan Kayser, and Tom Atkins.
The news about Night of the Creeps 2 came from Tom Atkins during an interview with JoBlo. He said:
“I would like to see Detective Ray Cameron become resurrected somehow. And Fred Dekker and I, every time we see each other, we talk about that. And he's determined to do a sequel with the three kids and myself. I mean they're no longer kids, they're all in their 50's, but they're all still kicking and healthy and looking good. I would love to do that again. I love Detective Ray Cameron.”
It would be pretty cool if this film project actually ended up happening. I love the idea...

Stars: Jason Lively, Tom Atkins, Steve Marshall, Jill Whitlow, Wally Taylor, Allan Kayser, Ken Heron, Alice Cadogan | Written and Directed by Fred Dekker
Fred Dekker, writer and director of this fun-loving and enjoyably-daft B-movie homage, had a strangely short career as a director. Oddly though, he is responsible for two films that I, and many others, really love. Night of the Creeps being one of them, and the other one being a Halloween-staple for me, 1987’s The Monster Squad. Dekker wrote the script in just a week for this film, and it is a good script that in many ways feels ahead of its time. It’s quite unusual how little credit Dekker has received for his work (his only other feature film is Robocop 3) because two of his films are cult favourites, and truly entertaining slices of horror fun. A definite inspiration to many similar films that would follow through the years,...

It’s hard to believe that yet another Flashback Weekend is upon us once again, with the longest-running horror convention in Chicago set to take over the Crowne Plaza Chicago O’Hare from Friday, August 2nd through Sunday, August 4th. This year's festivities look to be a stellar time for genre fans, with a cavalcade of notable guests descending upon the three-day event. If you happened to miss our previous coverage of the various talent announcements for Flashback (you can check them out Here), for this year’s convention, Bruce Campbell is returning to Chicago and will be reuniting with both Sam and Ted Raimi to celebrate all things Evil Dead.
Flashback Weekend will be playing host to a Night of the Creeps Reunion on Saturday evening with director Fred Dekker, co-stars Tom Atkins, Jason Lively, Jill Whitlow, Steve Marshall, Allan Kayser, Ken Heron, and Robert Kurtzman (who also worked...

More classics and cult favorites from the good people at Scream Factory!
Where do I even begin talking about my love for Night of the Creeps? Writer/director Fred Dekker, a monster kid from way back, was a successful screenwriter when he got to finally direct a movie. He was only about 26 at the time, but the movie plays like the work of a guy who has waited his entire life to make a movie. He packs it top to bottom with all the things he loves and includes every shot he's dreamed of composing, from the Jaws zoom in/dolly out to the first appearance of hard-boiled Tom Atkins, shot from a high angle looking down through a ceiling fan. He doesn't direct Night of the Creeps like he's trying to prove something; he directs it like he's only going to get one chance to make a movie and...

As if the lineup for Flashback Weekend 2019 wasn’t already impressive enough, Chicago’s best horror convention recently announced that this year’s event will play host to a Night of the Creeps reunion, featuring director Fred Dekker, Tom Atkins, Jason Lively, Jill Whitlow, and Steve Marshall. And for those of you ultra Notc geeks out there, you’ll even have the opportunity to take an in-costume photo with the whole gang, which should be a total thrill for attendees.
Flashback Weekend revealed earlier this year that genre legends Sam Raimi, Robert Englund, Bruce Campbell, and Tony Todd will all be in attendance this August, making the Chicago horror con a can’t-miss event for horror fans. Other attendees announced for Fbw 2019 include Lance Henriksen, Virginia Madsen, Ted Raimi, Heather Langenkamp, Amanda Wyss, Lisa Wilcox, Tuesday Knight, Alicia Witt, Cerina Vincent, and Return of the Living Dead 3’s Melinda Clarke.

“What I’m going to need is your standard flame thrower”.
Night Of The Creeps screens Midnights this weekend (March 9th and 10th) at The Moolah Theater and Lounge (3821 Lindell Blvd, St. Louis, Mo 63108) as part of Destroy the Brain’s monthly Late Nite Grindhouse film series.
Writer/director Fred Dekker’s Night Of The Creeps is all about little, parasitic aliens that take over human bodies and turn them into deadly zombies. This is a big pain in the backside for Chris Romero (Jason Lively), who is finally getting a chance to woo Cynthia (Jill Whitlow), a girl he has fallen in love with. With gruff Detective Cameron (Tom Atkins) trying to figure out what’s going on as bodies start to, apparently, wander off on their own it’s not long until the living have to band together to keep the living dead at bay.

“Well, girls, I’ve got good news and bad news. The good news is your dates are here.”
“What’s the bad news?”
“They’re dead.”
Now that’s dialogue that will echo throughout eternity. Thirty years ago today a film was unleashed on a populace that merely shrugged at its existence. Too weird to thrive at the time, Night Of The Creeps has gone on to become something of a cult classic with its weird blending of ’50s creature feature, ’60s zombie film, and ’80s culture. Written and directed by Fred Dekker (of The Monster Squad fame), the film stars Tom Atkins as grizzled detective Ray Cameron, Jason Lively as scrappy college dork Chris Romero, and Jill Whitlow as imperiled coed turned shotgun-wielding Cynthia Cronenberg. Night Of The Creeps has grown its following since the video and syndication days, inspiring many other filmmakers and artists.

It’s very exciting to see ambition in the world of horror. Yes, pleasure can and always will be derived from one more well formed slice of the blade or swing of the axe. However, occasionally a filmmaker comes on the scene overflowing with imagination and verve, a need to spew forth fresh ideas, or at the very least, a new take on a haggard trope. And then you have Fred Dekker, who decided for his first feature to include everything he loved about exploitation, horror and sci-fi, into one glorious, hearty stew that bafflingly flew under the radar at the time of its release. And like a good stew, the more it simmers, the sweeter the taste. 30 years later, Night of the Creeps (1986) will fill you up and have you begging for more.

Prepping to do a 25th Anniversary tribute to Night of the Creeps is a dream come true. While every film I have done a retrospective on has been a labor of love, Night of the Creeps is one of my favorites, and I felt pressure to do it right and knock it out of the park. I have never done a dual interview, so this was an opportunity to do something really special. Thankfully, director Fred Dekker and actress Jill Whitlow are as gonzo about the movie as the fans, and they were more than happy to sit down and talk up one of the finest Late Night Classics of all-time.
You can ready my retrospective with Jill Whitlow on Twice Dead here.

Shout Factory has been doing a stellar job with their Roger Corman DVDs as of late. A ton of great classics have been re released to a new audience and with them are some pretty good extras. No one would have blamed them for just putting these titles out in bare bones release but every DVD I’ve watched from the set so far at least has a commentary track, which is something I can’t even say for most new films. Before I even get into the review everyone should just give a round of applause for the effort put into these releases. They truly feel like labors of love, like they were made especially for fans. So with all this awesomeness packed into the DVD what about the films themselves?

The Evil (1978)
Directed by: Gus Triskonis
Starring: Richard Crenna, Joanna Pettet, Victor Buono, Andrew Prine and Cassie Yates.
In Gus Trikonis' The Evil, psychologist C.J. Arnold (Richard Crenna) and his wife Caroline (Joanna Pettet) buy a dilapidated mansion with a dark past in the hopes of restoring the estate and turning it into a drug rehabilitation clinic. With the help of some of his students and current patients, the doctor begins work on the mansion - but things take a nasty turn when an ancient spirit starts attacking people. When he opens a secret door in the basement of the house, the psychologist inadvertently releases the malevolent presence...and all hell breaks loose.
In terms of B-Movie ranking, The Evil isn't all that bad. The film takes an admittedly strong stance on the importance of sticking to a more classic ghost story rather than a sleazy, gory filled B-movie romp.

In terms of B-Movie ranking, The Evil isn't all that bad. The film takes an admittedly strong stance on the importance of sticking to a more classic ghost story rather than a sleazy, gory filled B-movie romp.

Another week in October, another bounty crop of horror DVDs and Blu-rays. This week we have home entertainment from recent theatrical releases of nightmares of the mind as well as re-releases of classic and campy horror, all with boatloads of extras.
Then there are other horror titles that are being re-released on Blu-ray or in packs for double dipping. On top of that, horror offerings from Asia, past seasons of TV shows, manga, novels, and even video games are all vying for our pocketbooks. And we still have four more weeks of October to go.
Next year October needs to begin in August.
Human Centipede: First Sequence
Directed by Tom Six
Human Centipede: First Sequence (review) was a sensation ever since its first mention. Stephen Colbert even talked about it at the 2010 Emmys Awards broadcast! The premise cannot be simpler. Two pretty American girls are on a road trip through Europe.

Bruce Campbell is reportedly planning a horror equivalent of The Expendables. If this is the case, who would star in it, and what gory events would take place? Here are Duncan’s suggestions…
Now, news that Bruce Campbell is reportedly planning a horror equivalent of The Expendables is, in itself, enough to make me want to proclaim that the world is a beautiful place, filled with beautiful things, as merely putting just Bruce Campbell in a film is normally enough to get me to watch it. But, let's all calm down for a minute and look a bit closer at the facts.
In a recent interview with the La Times, Mr Campbell was asked about his concept for taking Bruce Vs. Frankenstein (a sequel to 2007's My Name Is Bruce) and making it 'The Expendables of horror'. His reply was: "Yeah, The Expendables, or more like the It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World...

Back in August 1986, two horror movies debuted on the same Friday in New York-area theaters. The film that got more publicity, and that most of the genre fans I knew wanted to see, was The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. But one pal and I were more interested in checking out the one that promised a “Free Creep Prevention Mask” to the first patrons on opening night.
So we paid our admission, were each handed a paper surgical mask with the Night Of The Creeps logo emblazoned on it, took our seats—and enjoyed one of the year’s most surprisingly entertaining fright features, one that homaged practically every subgenre imaginable, yet kept a sure hand on its tone and never descended into spoofery. Those who caught Creeps in its limited theatrical run (during which it played a few cities as Homecoming Night) formed the beginnings of a cult following that...

I remember seeing Night Of The Creeps when it was released in 1986. I hadn’t seen the trailer and didn’t know anything about the movie, but a friend invited me at the last minute, and, hey, being 11 at the time, any chance to see an R-rated horror movie was an opportunity I would never pass up. While first-time writer-director Fred Dekker’s Sf-horror pastiche bombed at the box office and quickly left theaters, I Loved the film. I watched it a few times afterward when it showed up on cable, but I haven’t seen Night Of The Creeps in nearly 20 years. So when I heard that Sony Pictures Home Entertainment was releasing a Director’s Cut of the film on DVD ($19.95; also Blu-ray $24.95), I couldn’t wait to revisit it, but I was trepidatious about how it has aged over the years. Well, Night Of The Creeps is...

The masterpiece Night of the Creeps by director Fred Dekker (Monster Squad) will finally get a DVD release and fans will be able to vote for the cover of the DVD. The 1986 film, a true work of art has been one of the most demanded DVD releases. The story behind Night Of The Creeps is almost as interesting as the film itself: writer-director Fred Dekker decided to spend seven days writing a script. If he could not finish the script in that time limit, he'd toss it into the garbage. Thankfully he was able to finish this gem before the week was up. It's been over fifteen years since Dekker's last film but he has successfully found a large cult following. Guaranteed to be one of the best DVD releases of the year, the special edition will contain: Sixty minutes of behind-the-scenes futurities: Birth of the Creeps featurette featuring Dekker...

I've been waiting a long time for a DVD release of Fred Dekker's cult classic Night of the Creeps... in fact, it's one of the few movies I still actually own on VHS. When The Monster Squad was finally released back in 2007, it looked like Notc would follow soon after, but it's taken another two years for Sony to get their act together. At long last, a release date of October 10th has been set, and it's now currently up for pre-order on Amazon [1]. Ever cooler is the fact that in addition to pre-ordering, you can also vote for your favourite DVD cover [2]. Unfortunately, the three choices that they have available aren't all that fantastic. I know that they're going for an old school horror look, but these just look like bargain bin titles to me. At any rate, if you're a fan of Night of the Creeps, you...

Horror fans would think Hell has finally frozen over. Think about it: Lost footage from Night Breed has been found, Universal has finally decided to release Phantasm II onto DVD (in what I'm reasonably sure will be an R-rated bare-bones release, but still), and now the specs have dropped for Sony's upcoming super-stacked DVD edition of Night of the Creeps!

The folks at Austin, TX’s Alamo Drafthouse sent over a heads-up that tickets go on sale tomorrow for their very special screening of Fred Dekker’s Night Of The Creeps. The filmmaker and his cast will present his director’s cut of the 1986 film Saturday, June 13 at 10 p.m. at the Alamo Downtown location (320 East 6th Street).
Dekker’s feature writing/directing debut is a catch-all homage to the horror and science-fiction genres, about an invasion of a college campus by wormlike alien parasites that turn their victims into zombies. Attending the show with Dekker will be young leads Jason Lively, Jill Whitlow and Steve Marshall, along with genre fave Tom Atkins, who memorably plays a cynical detective (“Thrill me!”) on the creeps’ trail. The reunion will be taped for Sony Pictures’ upcoming Creeps special-edition DVD (out in October), so if you attend, bear in mind you might be caught on camera!
