"The Blair Witch Project" is back in the news. First, word recently broke that a new "Blair Witch" movie is in the works from Blumhouse and Lionsgate. This was greeted as less-than-ideal information by the folks involved with the original movie, who feel they should be involved with the new film, too, and who can blame them? Then came word that the original cast members of the first film were asking for residuals for the use of their likenesses throughout the franchise.
In short, things seem messy in "Blair Witch" world. Talk about scary! But let's look beyond these recent headlines and back at the franchise itself. As of now, there are three feature films. There are also a handful of excellent made-for-tv faux documentaries that served as tie-ins for the films, but we won't be touching on those here. Instead, we're going to focus on the three theatrical releases: "The Blair Witch Project,...

"The Blair Witch Project" wasn't the first found footage horror film, but it is largely responsible for the explosion in found footage horror films over the last 25 years. A big reason for that? The numbers. Directed by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez, "Blair Witch" was shot over just eight days with an initial outlay of just $35,000. It was bought by Artisan Entertainment for $1 million, and the studio spent around $6-8 million marketing it (per The Hollywood Reporter). The movie went on to gross more than $248 million at the box office.
It's a studio executive's dream to land a project like that, and studios have been chasing the high of "The Blair Witch Project" ever since. There have been two "Blair Witch" movie sequels, with another "reimagining" recently announced by Blumhouse and Lionsgate. There have been books, comic books, and video games. Officially announced by Blumhouse and Lionsgate earlier this month, a reboot of The Blair Witch Project is currently in the works, which will be the third follow-up to the original found footage horror classic that changed the game back in 1999. In the wake of the announcement, the original creators and stars have each issued joint statements this weekend.
The Blair Witch Project was created by filmmakers Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez – along with Haxan Films creative partners Gregg Hale, Robin Cowie and Michael Monello – back in the 1990s, with stars Heather Donahue, Michael C. Williams, and Joshua Leonard heading out into the woods of Maryland to conjure up horror magic together.
The actors largely improvised their performances and even used their real names in the movie, with the film’s clever viral marketing campaign leading many to believe that they weren’t actually actors in a movie, but rather real...

Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard and Michael Williams, stars of the seminal horror film “The Blair Witch Project,” released a public letter to Lionsgate on Saturday asking for more robust compensation for their work on the 1999 blockbuster, as well as “meaningful consultation” on any future “Blair Witch” projects that use their names or likenesses.
The statement comes 10 days after Lionsgate and Blumhouse announced they plan to revive the franchise with a new movie that would provide, in the words of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson, “new vision for ‘Blair Witch’ that will reintroduce this horror classic for a new generation.” Lionsgate did not produce or distribute the original 1999 film. It acquired the property through its 2003 buyout of independent film distributor Artisan Entertainment.
The Lionsgate-Blumhouse announcement sparked a strongly worded response via social media from Leonard, who said that no one had contacted him or his costars about the project in advance.

The team behind the original 1999 film The Blair Witch Project didn’t know about the plan for a new movie in the horror franchise until it was announced during Lionsgate’s CinemaCon presentation last week. But the filmmakers’ frustrations over their lack of involvement in the future of the series has been building for years.
“It’s bittersweet, honestly,” Ben Rock, production designer on the 1999 found-footage hit, tells The Hollywood Reporter about the planned reboot. He notes that no one from his film, including co-directors Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez, was involved in any significant way in the 2000 sequel, Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2, or the 2016 follow-up. Rock hopes this will change for the current project that is in the works from Lionsgate and Blumhouse, but so far, no one from the 1999 movie had been contacted or given a chance to pitch, he says.

Few films have changed the landscape of horror like The Blair Witch Project. Purporting to be recovered footage from a doomed documentary, the story follows three filmmakers who venture into the Black Hills of Maryland to investigate the legend of the Blair Witch. They never return. This lean and mean film was cobbled together from hours of footage shot by the actors improvising fictionalized versions of themselves. Directors Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez made the bold choice to never show the titular monster, elevating the film from a creepy tale set in a haunted woods to one of the most terrifying, profitable, and ambitious horror films of all time. Though her face remains in the shadows, the Blair Witch has become a cultural phenomenon with a legacy that reaches far beyond the real life entities who may have inspired her creation.

Louis Theroux accidentally offended Dame Judi Dench with one of his interview questions.
The documentarian sat down with the Oscar-winning actor for an episode of his BBC series Louis Theroux Interviews, which aired on Tuesday (1 November).
The actor told Theroux that she owned 17 cats during the war, Theroux replied: “During which war?”
Dench, 87, said: “Well, the Second World War. Louis!”
The Belfast star jokingly told off Theroux, 52, for implying that she could have been alive during the First World War (1914 - 1918).
“Am I the only person who heard that? ‘Which war?’” she quipped.
Theroux laughed and quickly tried to defend himself, saying: “I thought you meant the Vietnam war.”
“Oh. No, the Second World War,” Dench laughed.

Judi Dench has a forest filled with “memorial trees” planted in remembrance of actors such as Alan Rickman and Helen McCrory.
In a forthcoming episode of Louis Theroux’s new interview series airing on Tuesday (1 November), the much-loved actor shows the presenter around the private forest that extends from the garden in her Surrey home.
In her grounds, the veteran actor has planted trees dedicated to friends and loved ones from throughout the industry who have died.
“This is Helen McCrory,” Dench explains, as a tree is shown with a slate tag attached bearing the late Peaky Blinders star’s name.
Theroux and Dench then see a tree labelled for Natasha Richardson, who died in 2009 after a skiing accident.
Other trees shown are dedicated to Diana Rigg, Stephen Sondheim, John Gielgud and Alan Rickman.
Asked how she began the tradition, Dench explained: “Well, I love them. I love trees and...

"My obituary was published when I was 24," begins Heather Donahue. You don't even have to be a horror fan for you to recognize her terrified, runny-nosed face, the face that "The Blair Witch Project" seared onto the pop culture consciousness in 1999, one of the greatest years for movies. Scraped together by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez, "The Blair Witch Project" changed the landscape of horror movies with its lo-fi approach; despite little by way of script, set pieces, and budget, the trio of actors leading the documentary on a local legend shot and acted the story so well that everyone thought it was real, following in the tradition of controversial luminaries of the genre like "Cannibal Holocaust."
Despite their training and contributions to the movie, stars Heather Donahue, Michael Williams, and Joshua Leonard — all trained actors — were paid wages so scant that they struggled in stark contrast to the film's runaway success.

TV phenomenon "Barney & Friends" is the subject of a forthcoming docuseries that breaks down how the beloved children's show became a target for hate. "I Love You, You Hate Me," a two-part event from Peacock directed by Tommy Avallone, highlights the astronomical rise of Barney in the early '90s, as well as the friendly purple dinosaur's terrible treatment from furious public backlash.
In the trailer for "I Love You, You Hate Me," talking heads like Bill Nye the Science Guy, NBC's Al Roker, and others share stories about how the world turned on Barney's positive messages of love, acceptance, and inclusion - all of which stemmed from creator Sheryl Leach - before the clip begs the question: "Why does the world love to hate?" "As her beloved character was heading into the stratosphere, people couldn't accept that this was just a show," Roker says.

"In October of 1994, three student filmmakers disappeared in the woods near Burkittsville, Maryland, while shooting a documentary. A year later their footage was found."
Or so the marketing campaign told us. After The Blair Witch Project was released in 1999, audiences learned that there never was a group of film students, that the Blair Witch was made up for the purpose of this movie, and that the notion that this footage had been discovered in the woods was all just a ploy. Some found this clever, while others found it disingenuous. Either way, this simple premise gave rise to a film that would have a huge impact on horror cinema.
As the story opens, Heather (Heather Donahue), Josh (Joshua Leonard), and Mike (Michael C. Williams) are heading into the Maryland woods to film a documentary on the Blair Witch, a local legend that had haunted the woods surrounding Burkittsville for decades.

17 years ago, The Blair Witch Project burst into theaters on a massive wave of hype and made instant stars out of its directors, Eduardo Sanchez and Daniel Myrick, and its trio of lead actors: Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams, who made the cover of Newsweek magazine that same August. It was an unprecedented success that paved the way for the "found footage" genre that would explode over the subsequent decade, with films like Paranormal Activity and Cloverfield successfully exploiting the format's potential. None of these, though, would haunt viewers in quite the same way as Blair Witch, whose grainy, pre-smartphone aesthetic and terrifying denouement would stick with us long after the film's pop-cultural moment had passed. Of the film's three lead actors, Leonard has undoubtedly enjoyed the greatest run of Hollywood success post-Blair Witch, though it's worth noting that his career didn't really begin to heat...

One might think appearing in a movie that grosses $248 million and becomes the talk of the nation for weeks, even months, would be a good thing. But that was not necessarily the case for Heather Donahue, Michael Williams, and Josh Leonard, the three young actors featured in 1999’s unforgettable The Blair Witch Project. With a new Blair Witch film just days away, attention has turned once again to the micro-budgeted original. That creepy indie classic, shot in the style of a handheld documentary, set the standard for many found-footage horror films to come but did not exactly elevate its leads to stardom. Over at Broadly, writer Emalie Marthe has assembled an intriguing if discouraging oral history of the movie called “‘They Wished I Was Dead’: How The Blair Witch Project Still Haunts Its Cast.” The article includes details on the making, marketing, and reception of this groundbreaking but ...

“Morgan,” September 2
Stepping out of your father’s shadow is never easy when said father is beloved and successful, but it’s got to be especially difficult when it’s Ridley Scott. Sitting in the director’s chair for his very first feature, Luke Scott looks to bring the kind of white-knuckle tension and mysterious head games to the sci-fi genre as his father has done time and time again.

Let’s face it: found footage movies aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. Why would they? They’re cheap to make, fast to film, easy to market, and practically guaranteed to turn a profit, regardless of their Tomatometer score. And just as quality has become less and less of a priority, so too has the genre’s adherence to authenticity, particularly when it comes to casting.
That Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard, and Michael C. Williams weren’t recognizable faces or household names was a huge part of the reason that The Blair Witch Project turned into such an insane success; by casting unknowns in the three lead roles, directors Eduardo Sánchez and Daniel Myrick enhanced what was already an uncomfortably palpable experience.
Contrast that with last weekend’s The Pyramid, which stars familiar character actor Denis O’Hare–of True Blood and American Horror Story–as...

Crazy to think it's been 15 years since this one came out, right? Williams actually reunited earlier this year at the Texas Frightmare convention back in May. That's all three of them with a member of the press below ... click here to hear their interview with OneOfUs.net.O.K., let's dig in! 1. When The Blair Witch Project came out in 1999, some people thought the film was true: They thought these three kids really went into the woods and disappeared forever, leaving only their video cameras full of spooky footage behind. And though it wasn't true, the three stars did have to get through some tough times to film the movie. A new Academy Originals video looks back at The Blair Witch Project and what it did for found-footage films—and how it came to be a found-footage film. In the video, producer Gregg Hale talks about how they grappled with how to...

The Blair Witch Project
Directed by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez
Written by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez
1989, USA
Three film students go out to Burkittsville, MD to make a documentary about the legend of the Blair Witch, who supposedly haunts the area. Heather (Heather Donahue) is the director, and accompanying her on the trip is cameraman Josh (Joshua Leonard) and Mike (Michael Williams) does the sound. As they go about asking the locals about the witch they get a tip about the cemetery up in the hills where the seven children who disappeared after outing Elly Kedward as a witch are supposedly buried.
Once on the trail Heather, Mike and Josh soon find the cemetery after a brief detour from Heather’s map and are ready to call it quits for the weekend after getting the footage. With the supplies finished after only three days, food is short and tempers are short.

Here’s one for Orange customers and information on how you can get the Orange Film to Go this week. Every week, Orange will be doing their Film Night Live which is an online web streaming Q&A to coincide with the movie that they are giving away for nothing (I can’t use the word ‘free’ but essentially it’s for the price of a text) on iTunes. This will be happening every week on Thursday and has the catchy title, Film To Go (we don’t want to hear people calling it Orange Thursdays!). Each week at 8pm, there will be a live webcast which they call Film Night Live. We’ve teamed up with Orange to bring you the broadcast on the HeyUGuys Facebook page here.
This week, the movie being given away is The Blair Witch Project starring Heather Donahue, Michael Williams, Joshua Leonard and directed by Daniel Myrick & Eduardo Sanchez.

There's been talk for years about another entry in "The Blair Witch Project" franchise, now it looks like the film may finally be moving at last.
Eduardo Sanchez, the original film's co-director, tells Bloody Disgusting that “It’s completely up to Lionsgate. Dan and I are ready to do it. We’ve been toying around with a sequel idea that we really like. It’s just a matter of getting our schedules in line and having Lionsgate sign off on the idea.”
One idea is that original cast members Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams would all be coming back - “The plan is to have them [back]. They’re probably not going to be the main characters but they’re definitely characters in the sequel.“
Don't expect the first person P.O.V. though - "Right now, the idea has no first person in it at all, but we'll see.

Director Eduardo Sanchez wants to return to his film that started his career—“The Blair Witch Project.” In a brief interview with Bloody Disgusting’s Fred Topel, Sanchez discussed about the possibilities of a third film since the original film shown in 1999. It garnered almost $250 million worldwide at the box office, but the sequel “Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2” fizzled at the box office. “It’s completely up to Lionsgate,” said Sanchez. “Dan [Myrick] and I are ready to do it. We’ve been toying around with a sequel idea that we really like. It’s just a matter of getting our schedules in line and having Lionsgate sign off on the idea. We’ve been ready to do a ‘Blair Witch’ movie for a long time. We’re as close as we’ve ever been to making it happen but it’s still not a guaranteed thing.” Sanchez did...

In 1999 The Blair Which Project blew up in theaters pulling in $250 million dollars, a crappy sequel was released shortly after, but only pulled in $50 million, and that's what you get when you rush something into production. There was a good way to make a sequel that would have been successful, but that wasn't it. I have to say the marketing campign built around the original film was brilliant.
Regardless of how you feel about the Blair Witch project it was the start of a new film genre. The found footage style of filmmaking has been blowing up in Hollywood recently, some films have been great, others have sucked, it doesn't look like this style of filmmaking is going away anytime soon.

When "Paranormal Activity" came out last year it was hard not to think about "The Blair Witch Project": two heavily improvised, found footage horror films shot independently on shoestring budgets that became enormously profitable hits thanks to ingenious internet marketing campaigns. So with "Paranormal Activity 2" opening this week, it's hard not to think about "Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2," which, like "Paranormal Activity 2," was rushed into production to capitalize on its predecessor's surprising success and made by a different creative team than the original film.
Based on the "Paranormal 2" trailers it's clear they've already avoided a few of the pitfalls of "Blair Witch 2," most notably maintaining the original's docsploitation visual style instead of shifting to a more conventionally shot fiction film. But Paramount has kept a tight lid on just about everything else. Having enjoyed both "The Blair Witch Project" and the first "Paranormal Activity," and...

Another week in October, another bounty crop of horror DVDs and Blu-rays. This week we have home entertainment from recent theatrical releases of nightmares of the mind as well as re-releases of classic and campy horror, all with boatloads of extras.
Then there are other horror titles that are being re-released on Blu-ray or in packs for double dipping. On top of that, horror offerings from Asia, past seasons of TV shows, manga, novels, and even video games are all vying for our pocketbooks. And we still have four more weeks of October to go.
Next year October needs to begin in August.
Human Centipede: First Sequence
Directed by Tom Six
Human Centipede: First Sequence (review) was a sensation ever since its first mention. Stephen Colbert even talked about it at the 2010 Emmys Awards broadcast! The premise cannot be simpler. Two pretty American girls are on a road trip through Europe.

A casting notice for a film called The Blair Witch Remake would seem to suggest, obviously enough, that The Blair Witch Project is being remade, but a close look at the circumstances raises a few questions. The characters listed are Dennis Hither, Michael Adams, Donald Walker and Allison James as opposed to Heather Donahue, Josh Leonard and Mike Williams. What's more, the female role is apparently not one of the filmmakers this time around, with Dennis listed as the main role. I'll put the full casting notices after the break. Another question mark hovers over the use of the Blair Witch name. I'd be very surprised if Lionsgate, who hold the rights to any sequels, would allow another film to pitch up on their turf like that. We know that Myrick and Sanchez have recently been talking about a third Blair Witch film... could this possibly be it? I'm pretty...

After the incredible success of the ultra-low budget Paranormal Activity sparked sequel rumors, the co-creator of the original "shakycam" success, The Blair Witch Project, Eduardo Sánchez, emerged to talk about the possibility of making another Blair Witch.
Sánchez and co-creator Daniel Myrick declined to work on Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 because they "didn't want to be seen as one-trick ponies, but Sánchez admits to being "jealous" of Paranormal Activity and its creator, Oren Peli.
I'm happy for the guy ... but at the same time, there's the feeling that, man, I could have done this. It would have been different and might not have been as good. But I know how to make these films. To me it's like, man, maybe I should go back and kind of milk this one more time.
And, apparently, Sánchez and Myrick do plan to reunite on another Blair Witch movie, though it...

Looking to literally re-capitalize on a filmmaking style they re-invented back in 1999, The Blair Witch Project writer-directors, Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez, are this close to returning to the big screen with another Blair Witch installment – one that could potentially reunite the original film's stars, Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams. Speaking to the Toronto Star, Sanchez says that the new film would forget Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows ever happened (thank god), and it would pick up right where the original left off. He adds, "We're at the step where we're about to pitch to Lionsgate, which owns the movie rights now. It's pretty much up to them. They can completely squash it or greenlight it." Considering the smash success of Paranormal...
