Since the late 1940s, the television sitcom has been an implicit delivery system of social instruction. These shows helped set social norms and create stereotypes like the bumbling dad and the dutiful, ever-forgiving wife. Sitcoms are designed to make us feel better and forget our problems while laughing at other people for a bit. All the while, they're creating social mores and codes in society, like silent computer programs running in the background of our lives.
Newsweek pointed out the impact TV had on an entire generation during the golden era of network television. The shows viewed by millions shaped things like fashion trends ("They all had suits") and more importantly, our perception of the world around us ("Nearly all the people were white").
However, in the right hands, sitcoms can be a force for good. Norman Lear got us talking about the impact of bigotry with "All in the Family.

There’s absolutely nothing she can’t do, and Sofia Vergara just joined the forthcoming ABC series “Raising Mom” as an executive producer.
The “Machete Kills” babe’s relationship with her 21-year-old son Manolo was actually the inspiration behind the project, created by Luis Balaguer, who works for Vergara’s Latin World Entertainment company.
According to an insider, “Raising Mom” will be based on a young single mother and son who end up raising each other.
Sofia’s “Modern Family” director Gail Mancuso will helm the show, while “Raising Hope scribe Christine Zander will handle the writing duties.

Exclusive: Modern Family star Sofia Vergara is fielding another single-camera comedy project at ABC, this time inspired by her own parenting experience. The network has put in development Raising Mom, from Vergara and Luis Balaguer’s Latin World Entertainment, Electus and ABC Studios. Gail Mancuso, hot off her Emmy directing win for Modern Family, is on board to helm. Written by Christine Zander (Raising Hope), Raising Mom is inspired by Vergara’s experiences raising her son and follows a young single mom and her 21-year-old son who discover that they have done a pretty good job of raising each other, only now they decide it might be time to gain some independence. The idea for the show was conceived by Balaguer from observing Vergara’s relationship with her son during the more than 20 years he has been producing partners with the Colombian-born actress. As soon as we thought we could predict the outcome of the Oscars, here comes another surprise! This one's brought to you by the Writers Guild of America. Picked for Best Original Screenplay was Christopher Nolan's "Inception." The director, famously dissed for not getting a Best Director Oscar nomination, may just win the Best Original Screenplay come Oscar night. Oscar front-runner, "The King's Speech" was not nominated because it didn't quality under union rules which prompted Nolan to say during his WGA acceptance award that he looked forward to a time when he could accept the award "without qualification."
That could be the beginning of a great script Mr. Nolan, go write it :happy
For adapted screenplay, I'm happy to report that Aaron Sorkin's fantastic script won! Based on "The Accidental Billionaires" by Ben Mezrich, "The Social Network" was the only film last year that I predicted to win this very category.

As hard as it may be to believe sometimes, someone (or someones) actually sits down and writes a movie or TV show before you end up seeing it at your local multiplex or on your favorite TV network. The people who do the sitting and the writing are, surprisingly, called writers and, like the Directors, the Golden Globes and the Oscars, they have their own awards show.
This week, the Writers Guild of America, which is the trade group and advocate for writers, announced its nominations for outstanding achievement in feature film and television, radio, news, promotional writing, and graphic animation during the 2009 season to be honored at the upcoming 2010 Writers Guild Awards on February 20, 2010, in Los Angeles and New York.
We realize that these nominations may not be as glamorous as the Golden Globes or the Oscars, but we kinda like writers around here and think they do a pretty important job.

Awards heavyweights "Mad Men," "30 Rock" and "The Office" and buzzed-about newcomer "Modern Family" led the TV field for the 2010 Writers Guild Awards with three nominations each.
AMC's "Mad Men" and NBC's "30 Rock" and "The Office" are in the running for best drama/comedy series, and each received two nominations for episodic writing. "Family" made the cut for best comedy series, best new series and best episodic writing for a comedy series.
ABC's "Family" was one of two new shows to break into the best series categories along with Fox's quirky high-school dramedy "Glee," which faces "Family" in the best comedy series and best new series fields.
While the WGA Awards are still in its nomination phase, Fox's "The Simpsons" can already uncork the champagne. The veteran series is assured to win the animation category after landing all five nomination slots.

Nurse Jackie, starring Edie Falco (The Sopranos) as the complicated, sweet-and-sour title character, has been a surprise hit for Showtime. With its strong female characters and gay-inclusive storylines — one of the lead characters, Mo-Mo (Haaz Slieman), is gay and the show recently featured a lesbian couple played by Swoosie Kurtz and Blythe Danner — the drama has become a favorite with Lgbt viewers as well.
A big part of Nurse Jackie’s progressive recipe for success are its co-creators and co-show runners, Linda Wallem and Liz Brixius — who also just happen to be out lesbians.

We spoke to both of them about writing gay storylines, where Nurse Jackie is headed in its second season, and how they’ve fared as out lesbians in entertainment.
AfterEllen.com: Congratulations on the success of Nurse Jackie. Only two days after its premiere episode, it was picked up for a second season!

According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Saturday Night Live" veteran Christine Zander wrote the script, which was first ordered last fall. American adaptations of British sitcoms are certainly nothing new, and they can range from good (The Office), to decent (Three's Company), to horrific (Coupling). Considering this television history, you might think that an American adaptation of a British sitcom has a sporting chance of being at least as watchable (if not more so) than the original, and for the most part you'd be right. Unless, of course, Fox was planning to remake the seminal 1990s Brit-com Absolutely Fabulous, or something. But they'd never do that, right? From Variety : Fox is developing a redo of Jennifer Saunders' enduring Britcom "Absolutely Fabulous," to be exec produced by Mitch Hurwitz, Eric Tannenbaum and Kim Tannenbaum for Sony Pictures TV, Tantamount and BBC Worldwide America. Christine Zander ("Saturday Night Live") is set to write the script and will exec produce along with the BBC's Ian Moffet and original series creator...
