In the summer of 2010, at the college entrance examination venue, Bai Xiaoyu (Tan Jianci) met Wang Jinjin (Zhang Jingyi) for the first time, and then “lost” her. Four years later, amidst the multitude of job seekers during the graduation season, they were unexpectedly reunited and subsequently fell in love. In 2018, after having known each other for eight years and being in a relationship for five years, they stand on the cusp of marriage but are hesitant to move forward. Third installment of of Bona’s “China Victory Trilogy,” a series intended as “a gift to the Communist Party for its centenary, “Hidden Blade”, however, strays far away from the previous two installments, as it mostly follows noir, extremely stylized paths while the propaganda, although still present, is quite toned down.
Hidden Blade will screen exclusively on theaters starting February 17, courtesy of Wellgo USA
With the initial scenes taking place in the ‘present’, the story then makes an intense flashback to November 1937, the day after Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor, moves to the intense bombings of Guangzhou that lasted for about a year, and then settles in Shanghai until August 1945. It is in the last setting the majority of the story unfolds, where we are introduced to the main characters. Mr He is the director of counter espionage for the Japanese authorities in the area, but in reality he...

Cheng Er’s last feature film was the rather gorgeous looking and expertly directed “The Wasted Times” back in 2016, which had an all-star cast that included Tadanobu Asano, Zhang Ziyi and Ge You. He follows that up with the rather blandly named “Hidden Blade” (previously called “Anonymous”), which recently released a spate of trailers for us to enjoy.
Synopsis
On December 7, 1941, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. The following day, the Wang False Government followed Japan’s declaration of war against Britain and the United States, and Japan symbolically occupied all of Shanghai. With the outbreak of the Pacific War, the situation of China’s war effort changed completely. Members of the Chinese Communist Party underground risked sending out information to break the peace between Japan and Chiang and to defend the motherland.

Contemporary Chinese Cinema is a column devoted to exploring contemporary Chinese-language cinema primarily as it is revealed to us at North American multiplexes.Over the last few years it has become increasingly easy to see mainstream Asian films in North America at the same time they are released in their home countries. Thanks to partnerships with small, international distributors, the major multiplex chains (AMC, Cinemark, Regal) have devoted a handful of screens in major markets to showing new releases from India, Korea, China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Most of these titles fall under the radar of both critics and audiences outside the diasporic communities to which they are targeted. They play for a week or two and then disappear, outside of a handful of breakout titles. Last year Stephen Chow’s The Mermaid made headlines for its high per-screen averages in North America as it shattered domestic box office records in China.

No reason has been given for the change in opening film.
Danish director Bille August’s The Chinese Widow will open this year’s Shanghai International Film Festival (Siff, June 17-26), replacing Ann Hui’s Our Time Will Come, which was previously announced as the opening film.
However, Our Time Will Come will still play in the Golden Goblet competition at Siff. No reason was given for the change by either the festival or the film’s producer Bona Film Group.
Both films are set in China during the Second World War. Starring Emile Hirsch and Yu Nan, The Chinese Widow tells the story of an American pilot who is shot down and saved by Chinese villagers. It remains unclear if the film has been made under the recently signed Danish-Chinese co-production treaty. August recently served as jury president at the Beijing International Film Festival.

Filmmakers submit letter to authorities regarding ban on Locarno and Toronto title.

Tibetan Buddhist lama and writer Khyentse Norbu’s fourth film was banned by the National Films Review Board and the Department of Culture of the Ministry of Home and Cultural Affairs on the grounds that it demeans religious symbols, including masks worn by actors.

Russia will present a total of six pictures at the 5th Beijing International Film Festival, to be held April 16th–23rd. Sergey Mokritsky’s "The Battle For Sevastopol" and Ramil Salakhutdinov’s "White, White Night" are included in the main competition while Andrey Konchalovsky’s "The Postman’s White Nights," Alexander Mitta’s "Chagall – Malevich" and Mikhail Kosyrev-Nesterov’s "Journey to the Mother" will be screened in the festival’s sidebar. Roman Prygunov’s "Downshifter" has been selected for the Gala Premiere section.
Among the Beijing festival jury members is Fedor Bondarchuk, the prominent Russian filmmaker, actor, producer, and Chairman of the Lenfilm studio Board of Directors. Roskino provides Public Relations support for the heavy Russian presence at the 5th International Festival in Beijing.
Katya Mtsitouridze, Roskino CEO: “From this year on, the Beijing Festival will be curated by Marco Mueller, previously at the helm of the Venice Festival. It is his ardent love of Russian culture that we have to credit for launching international careers of such stellar young filmmakers as Ivan Vyrypaev, Kirill Serebrennikov, Alexey German Jr., and Alexey Fedorchenko. Venice has also honored many a luminary from Russia, ranging from Nikita Mikhalkov to Alexey Balabanov. Alexander Sokurov’s Faust even took the Golden Lion in 2011. This tradition lives on as we can see already, in Marco Mueller’s first year, six Russian movies at Beijing. The governments of our countries are currently collaborating to expand the Russian quotas in Chinese theatres, and Roskino’s first business trip to Beijing, with any luck, should be the next step in this direction. Over the last couple of years, China has made tremendous progress undermining, by its rapid growth, the Hollywood monopoly in the film industry. There is still plenty of room for improvement for us.”
Alyona Shumakova, member of the Selection Committee, Beijing International Film Festival: “We were faced with the tall order of presenting Russian film as a vital artistic force which reflects, at the same time, a dramatically changed reality. It is also worth bearing in mind that the huge audience of these films will consist mostly of regular moviegoers, besides the usual festival crowd of film buffs. We are, mind you, dealing with a country that knows very little about Russian cinema and has yet to develop a concrete image of it. I believe that our picks, with their magnificent visuals and emotional intensity, more than rise to the challenge and accurately reflect the new world we live in.”
At the 2014 Cannes Iff, "The Battle for Sevastopol" was first pitched to industry professionals and international press at the Russian Pavilion opening ceremony. A Russian–Ukrainian co-production, this period drama tells the story of Lyudmila Pavlichenko, a legendary WWII sniper. The wide release in Russia is scheduled for April 2nd, to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Liberation. The protagonist is played by the masterful thespian Yulia Peresild.
Sergei Mokritsky, director: “As I was making a movie about the most lethal female sniper of WWII, I didn’t even dare dream of an international premiere in Beijing. It is an honor as well as a huge responsibility. Overall, China is the closest in spirit, and yet most mysterious country for me as it is for every Russian. I’m really looking forward to the Chinese reception of my movie, because what I aspired to with it was a blend of Soviet war-film mythology, modern cinematic language, and typically Slavic zest for life.”
Ramil Salakhutdinov’s "White, White Night" tells the story of a young man who suddenly goes missing when he travels to Saint Petersburg for a concert. Sent over from Moscow, the private eye hired to locate him meets a lot of people during investigation, and gradually immerses himself in the bleak present-day atmosphere of the city he once lived in. Against his better judgment, the sleuth takes the guy under his wing, which ultimately validates him and boosts his own sense of self-worth. The movie first played in competition at the 2014 edition of Kinotavr.
Ramil Salakhutdinov, director: “I strove to understand––to feel––what it’s like to live in our trying times, in an era of profound change.”
Alexey German Jr., creative director: “It’s a huge victory for Ramil. He’s a wonderful filmmaker, a magnificent actor, and an artist of incredibly fine sensibilities. His recognition by the Biff proves yet again that Salakhutdinov’s work is appreciated internationally.”
Andrey Konchalovskiy's "The Postman’s White Nights" will play in the festival’s sidebar.
In 2014, the film was awarded Silver Lion for Best Director at the Venice Film Festival. It recounts the life of a real man, village postman Alexey Tryapitsyn, who resides in the Arkhangelsk region and portrays himself on screen. Though a work of fiction rather than a documentary, the film has only one professional actress in its cast.
Mikhail Kosyrev-Nesterov’s drama "Journey to the Mother" is also playing in the festival’s parallel section. It is the story of a Russian guy who goes to France to see his mother, and meets his sister for the first time. The film’s leading actress is Adele Exarchopoulos, the star of Palme d’Or-winning "Blue Is the Warmest Color" and co-recipient of the Cannes festival’s highest honor.
Aleksandr Mitta’s "Chagall – Malevich" will play in the Special Screenings section. Set during Marc Chagall’s “Vitebsk period,” the story of an all-consuming love between the great artist and his wife Bella plays out against the backdrop of a historic duel he fought with Kazimir Malevich, his genius contemporary and fierce opponent.
Roman Prygunov’s "Downshifter" is set to bow internationally in the Gala Premiere section of the festival.
A sequel to the highest grossing Russian movie of 2012, "Downshifter" continues with the adventures of Max Andreev, a senior executive forced by the vicissitudes of his life to wipe the slate clean. The star of the production is Danila Kozlovsky, one of the most acclaimed actors of his generation. Made for $4M, the movie recouped its budget over the first weekend in theaters. Fedor Bondarchuk, who produced the box-office smash, currently predicts a final take north of $9M.
Russian filmmaker and producer Fedor Bondarchuk, whose historical drama "Stalingrad" was a runaway success in China in 2013, has been appointed a jury member for the 5 Beijing International Festival. He will share his duty with such directors as Ki-duk Kim (South Korea) and Fernando Meirelles (Brazil); screenwriter Robert Mark Kamen (USA); producer and director Peter Chan (Thailand); and Chinese actress, star of "Cloud Atlas," Zhou Xun. French director and producer Luc Besson, whose output in both capacities has long transcended the confines of local fame, will serve as President of the Jury. The festival program comprises 930 films from 90 countries. The festival’s top prize Tiantan is awarded in ten categories, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actress, and Best Actor.
Fedor Bondarchuk, producer, filmmaker: “ I’m honored and humbled to be invited to serve as a jury member for the Beijing Iff. The strategic partnership between Russia and China is now reinforced not only in politics and economy but also in the cultural sphere, of which film is an integral part. Stalingrad’s impressive Chinese grosses show enormous demand for Russian filmmaking.”
Marco Mueller, Chief Adviser for the Beijing Iff: “Ever since Stalingrad dominated the Chinese box office in 2013 (it was the highest-grossing foreign film of the year, apart from the American “commercial heavy artillery”), the interest in Russian film has reached a new level in the country. I think that from this year on, our festival’s appreciation of Russian film will also move to the next level. This year our program boasts an amazing selection, and Fedor Bondarchuk has every chance to achieve cult status in China––he is, after all, already on the jury! I would also like to note that our cooperation with China is off to a highly professional start as the Russian presence at the festival is supported by the government-owned Roskino. It is this level of commitment that allows us to make serious plans for the future.”...

Almost every Friday, we here at TwitchFilm run our weekly celebrity screenshot quiz, and last week the celebrity was Chinese actress Li Bingbing. Interestingly, on Facebook, Twitter and in comments beneath the article itself, comparisons were drawn with Chinese actress Fan Bingbing (who we featured in her own quiz last year). Both actresses are talented, beautiful and from China, but as Bingbing is their first name rather than their family name, they're not related. Yet people keep setting the Bingbings aside as a sort-of sub-category. You might just as well compare them with the likes of Zhou Xun, or Shu Qi, or Zhao Wei, or... well, you get my drift. Still, compared they are, every day, and with different results. Some people favor Fan Bingbing,...

Despite Mockingjay and Interstellar muscle, the current frame was down more than 30% on last week, but very close to last year’s comparable weekend for the Top 10 studio titles. Indies and local films that factored big this session included Women Who Flirt ($11.5M) and Rise Of The Legend ($5.5M, cume $18M) in China; along with Paddington‘s $8.5M bear hug to the UK, Mexico and Peru.
Last year this time, Catching Fire was the big game globally, while Gravity, much like Warner Bros’ Interstellar this year, was still exerting force in China in the similar period. Also last year, Frozen was just getting its skates on for what would go on to be a record breaking run.

After dipping his toe into China with his 2012 sequel Love In The Buff, Hong Kong auteur Pang Ho Cheung embraces the inevitable and presents his first full-blown mainland production, Women Who Flirt. Zhou Xun and Huang Xiaoming play the longtime friends and colleagues whose til-now platonic relationship is jeopardised by Taiwanese dolly bird Sui Tang, forcing Zhou to step up and show she's got what it takes to win the guy she's always loved.Based on the dating "toolbook" Everyone Loves Tender Women by Loverman, Women Who Flirt is hardly venturing into uncharted territory. Angie (Zhou Xun) and Marco (Huang Xiaoming) have been friends so long he no longer sees her as dating material, even going so far as to refer to her as a...

This week, Pang Ho Cheung's Chinese film Women Who Flirt will be released in the Us. James saw the film and liked it a lot, as you can read in his review (this is a link). It is a modern romantic comedy starring actress Zhou Xun on the prowl, and she is the subject of this week's quiz. I try never to judge an actress just by her looks, and with Zhou Xun I thankfully don't have to. Almost unearthly though her beauty sometimes is, she is also a mighty fine actress, and perfectly capable of bringing quirk or tragedy into a picture. That last bit may also be the reason why her movie characters generally have the life expectancy of Sean Bean's. Anyway, once...

The Weinstein Company’s The Imitation Game is the big kid on the block among this holiday weekend’s batch of newcomers. The title is following in the footsteps of past TWC heavyweights The King’s Speech and The Artist, both of which opened to solid box office numbers and eventually scored Oscars for Best Picture. The distributor is expecting good numbers for Imitation Game over the Thanksgiving frame. IFC Films’ horror pic The Babadook has some good buzz heading into the weekend, though it might show its biggest heft via VOD with its day-and-date rollout. Remote Area Medical is one of those films one hopes everyone will see. Timed perfectly for this time of the year’s focus on thanks and giving, the documentary shows the underbelly of America’s healthcare crisis by way of people who provide free medical services to needy people in pop-up clinics around the country.

As the crowd broke into a loud cheer, she was joined on stage by Kao, who was wearing a black tuxedo. The couple then surprised...

In the 1920s, the Qing Dynasty was overthrown in favor a Chinese Republic. With the nation divided into fiefdoms ruled by fighting warlords, chaos seems to rein the nation. The Great Magician focuses on warlord Bully Lei (Lau Ching-wan) whose lieutenant "dog" magician (Wu Gang) uses magic to manipulate convicts into joining Lei's army while also plotting behind Lei's back with the Japanese to bring back the Qing Dynasty.
Lei is too enmeshed in his own special love triangle to notice all the plotting going on. His seventh and most recent wife Yin (Zhou Xun) does not love him because she's still pining after her old fiancé who disappeared three years ago. The fiancé in question has just reemerged, touting his magical skills as Chang Hsian (Tony Leung). He, too, is manipulating all those around him; but his efforts are aimed at winning back Yin (and also finding a special...

Cloud Atlas has been forgotten by nearly everyone at this point, including Warner Bros. Home Entertainment, which has dumped its release all the way into May. This is a shame, because the film is a visual treat, an intertwining of great acting performances and vivid storylines. If you.ve been waiting and waiting to add the Wachowski.s flick to your collection, the film will hit Blu-ray, DVD, and digital download on May 14. While the film didn.t make a big impact at the box office, bringing in only $27 million domestically, it does offer a lot in the way of thought-provoking content and great acting performances. Cloud Atlas stars a pretty epic cast including Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Sturgess, Hugh Grant, Xun Zhou, Jim Broadbent, James D.Arcy, and Susan Sarandon. Luckily, fans won.t have to pay that much for all that talent. The list price for the...

For those that missed the Wachowski's/Tom Tykwer's Cloud Atlas, starring Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Hugh Grant, Jim Broadbent, Hugo Weaving, Keith David, Ben Whishaw, James D'Arcy, Susan Sarandon, and Xun Zhou, your opportunity to finally see it is on the horizon. Warner Home Entertainment will release the film on Blu-ray/DVD/digital download on May 14, 2013. The film, lauded as a visionary spectacle, received a lukewarm box office, likely due to its complex nature and almost three-hour...

The film's release should have been a global event, but its studio's reticence over its fragmented form has led to disappointing box office returns
"They played footsie for a little bit, until we basically got on our knees, begged them and crapped our pants in front of them, you know: 'Look into your heart!'"
That's Andy Wachowski's account – given to Deadline Hollywood – of trying to get Warner Brothers on side for his and sister Lana's adaptation of Cloud Atlas. Not what you think you'd have to do for a studio for whom you've made in excess of a billion and a half dollars. Warner eventually signed on, coughing up around $20m of the $102m budget – but their indecision has echoed through the film's marketing and release stages, hobbling one of the most ambitious and globally oriented projects of the decade on the first leg of its journey. Its...

Warner Bros has just dropped the details regarding the blu-ray release of the Wachowskis' latest movie, Cloud Atlas; including all the bonuses coming with it and when you'll be able to get your hands on it and bring it home.
Cloud Atlas was one of my favorite films of 2012. I thought it was an amazingly well done adaptation of the book it's based on, as well as a powerful and visually impressive story in its own right. Sadly, it didn't do as well in the box office and many people missed out on the film. I think that's a shame, but I can understand it. Marketing such a film was difficult and it's hard to show off why people should have gone to see it.
Fortunately, films that didn't get the attention they deserved in the theaters, can thrive on home releases, which is why I was so excited WB...

While released to lukewarm reviews around the world, Cloud Atlas has been received warmly by Chinese audiences since its Thursday release, with the film’s box office revenue in the country on track to cross the benchmark 100 million yuan ($16 million) mark mid-week. Nearly 40 minutes have been chopped from the Hollywood film 'Cloud Atlas' for Chinese audiences, deleting both gay and straight love scenes to satisfy censors.
It premiered on Tuesday in Beijing in a red-carpet ceremony with actor Hugo Weaving and China's own Zhou Xun, but won't start running in Chinese cinemas until next Thursday.
'Cloud Atlas' is a pretty confusing tale - even without big gaps in the tale
The filmmaker's Chinese partners have slashed that version from the Us runtime of 172 minutes to a pared-down 134 to expunge the "passionate" episodes.
"The 172-minute version can be downloaded online ... so I am sure some people will prefer that to going to the cinema," said fan Kong Kong, 27, who lives in Shanghai.
Chinese citizens have recently become more outspoken, especially on social media, with complaints about censorship of imported films as well as the home-grown film industry and news media,...

Chinese censors have reportedly cut Cloud Atlas down from 169 minutes to 130 minutes, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
“It sucks really,” Lana Wachowski said to the news agency China.org.cn about the fact that audiences in China will not see the full version in theaters. ”But I believe you can watch the full version online,” she added. According the THR none of the film’s directors took part in the cuts.
The THR story speculates that the scenes depicting a gay relationship in the film and possibly a heterosexual sex scene with actress Zhou Xun were cut.

Director: Wuershan. Review: Chris Sawin. "Painted Skin: The Resurrection" is a sequel to the 2008 film "Painted Skin" and reunites stars Chen Kun, Zhao Wei, and Zhou Xun. Unfortunately, the sequel doesn't bring back Donnie Yen and viewing the original wasn't really in the cards before viewing this. This review will approach "Painted Skin: The Resurrection" as if it were a stand-alone film. Xiaowei (Zhou Xun) is an ancient fox spirit who has just been set free after being imprisoned in ice for 500 years. The vengeful Xiaowei, along with the help of her sister Que'er (Yang Mi), feeds on the hearts of men to stay looking as elegant as she does. If Xiaowei was ever offered a heart willingly, she would become human and would finally be able to experience all the joys of being human. Xiaowei becomes attached to the slightly disfigured Princess Jing (Zhao Wei) who has had an...
