“Top Chef” returned for its 21st season on Wednesday night, March 20. So what happened in the season premiere episode, “Chef’s Test,” when 15 brand new cheftestants came to Wisconsin to celebrate the culinary culture of the Midwest and compete for the grand title?
Entering this first episode of the competition to win a feature in Food and Wine magazine; an appearance at the Food and Wine Classic in Aspen, Colorado; and $250,000 in prize money were Manny Barella, Kaleena Bliss, Kevin D’Andrea, Alisha Elenz, Danny Garcia, Valentine Howell Jr., Dan Jacobs, Savannah Miller, David Murphy, Kenny Nguyen, Laura Ozyilmaz, Charly Pierre, Amanda Turner, Rasika Vekatesa and Michelle Wallace.

In the seventh episode of "Futurama," called "My Three Suns", Hermes Conrad (Phil Lamarr) finally notices that Bender (John Dimaggio) the alcoholic robot, doesn't really seem to fulfill any specific function at Planet Express. Rather than face a cut in his salary, Bender proposes to be the company chef. This is an issue for two reasons. First, Bender has no skill whatsoever in the culinary arts, and second, Bender has no sense of taste. His inaugural meal as the company chef is a salted slug served with glasses of salt water. The reaction from a disgusted Fry (Billy West) says it all, "That's the saltiest thing I've ever tasted! And I once ate a big heaping bowl of salt!" Bender defends himself by saying that the salt levels were fine, being 10% less than a lethal dose.
Bender's obsession with cooking would be explored several additional times throughout "Futurama." Bender often...

Local news is still an incredibly important facet of TV for many viewers. A recent survey found 45% of cable users said live news or sports programming was the top reason they still preferred using that method to watch TV, and if streaming ever wants to fully replace cable, it will need to offer a robust lineup of live news.
That’s why the latest announcement from CBS and the free local news streaming platform Local Now is so important. On Wednesday, the two sides revealed a new agreement that will send 14 locally-themed CBS News stations to the service for free. Along with these news channels, Local Now is getting CBS Sports’ free soccer channel Golazo Network, a channel dedicated to the syndicated newsmagazine “Inside Edition,” and the lifestyle network Dabl.

Roku is making a franchise out of its original unscripted rom-com, Meet Me in Paris.
But instead of the Champs-Élysées or Luxembourg Gardens, the second Meet Me reality rom-com will see a new group of young women traveling to Rome in search of love. Production for the 90-minute film, Meet Me in Rome, is set to begin later this year and will debut at a later date on The Roku Channel.
Like Meet Me in Paris, Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine and Zoe Saldaña’s Cinestar Pictures will return to co-produce the film. Witherspoon, Saldaña, Sara Rea, Sue Kinkead, Cisely Saldaña, Mariel Saldaña and Angela Rae Berg will serve as executive producers.
“Meet Me in Paris was a dream to make,” Rea, who leads unscripted for Hello Sunshine, said. “We witnessed three exceptional women becoming dear friends as they searched for love in one of the most romantic cities in the world.

After an enviable career working for traditional TV outlets, Charlie Collier surprised many a media executive late last year by leaving a senior job running entertainment programming for the Fox broadcast network to join Roku, the company that gives millions of Americans their access to the world of streaming.
He hopes advertisers will follow.
On Tuesday, Collier, 53, now heading Roku’s ad sales and development of content on its own platforms, will be pressed to show potential sponsors why. Roku, which boasts 71.6 million active accounts, will make a big pitch to Madison Avenue as part of a group of industry “newfront” sessions. Even though NBCUniversal, Disney and their rivals won’t make similar outreach until May, presentations this week from digital players such as Amazon and Roku are seen as an aggressive bid to win ad dollars that might previously have gone to the TV companies. After all, the networks,...

By the conclusion of the 22nd Food Network South Beach Food & Wine Festival (Sobewff), 450 chefs had participated in 110-plus events attended by more than 60,000 food and beverage industry professionals, foodie fans, fine-dining fanatics, lovers of burgers, tacos and fried chicken, and the culinary-curious masses on the hunt for tasty bites and sips and a Guy Fieri selfie.
The wizard behind this culinary oz in the sand is Lee Brian Schrager, arguably one of the most influential people in Miami’s food scene as the founder of Sobewff and chief communications officer and senior vice president of social responsibility for Southern Glazer’s Wine and Spirits, the largest liquor distributor in the United States.
Every winter, he makes magic happen in the Magic City as the event has transformed into being as much about culinary television, book and endorsement deals and celebrity chef sightings as it is about wine and food.

Roku Media President Charlie Collier has implemented his first major executive shake-up since joining the company from Fox Entertainment in November, elevating David Eilenberg to oversee content across the media division, a Roku spokesperson confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter.
Eilenberg will succeed Rob Holmes, who currently serves as vp programming and is set to depart in March after six years at Roku. During that time, Holmes helped oversee the launch of The Roku Channel and led the company’s transition into original content. In a memo to staff announcing the changes, obtained by THR, Collier said Holmes would focus on “ongoing strategic projects” before his departure. “He’s a partner and friend to many of us, and to be clear, this announcement is by no means Rob’s final send-off; there will be more on Rob and his many contributions in the days ahead. Rebecca Halpern’s latest documentary “Love, Charlie: The Rise and Fall of Chef Charlie” examines iconic Chicago chef Charlie Trotter, who developed micro-greens and helped make vegetarianism mainstream. The chef, who died in 2013, was also known for his cookbooks, which featured groundbreaking food photography, which earned him the title “godfather of food porn.” Trotter’s first namesake restaurant, located in a Lincoln Park townhouse on Chicago’s North Side, opened its doors in 1987 and remained a famed establishment for 25 years. While considered a trailblazing chef whose restaurants helped transform American fine dining, Trotter was also known for his temper and controlling behavior.
“He was the puppeteer,” Grant Achatz, a chef who worked for Trotter and went on to open his own restaurants says in the film. “He figured out a way to get what he wanted from all of us.”

Groundbreaking Chicago chef Charlie Trotter didn’t invent abusive behavior, but his star cameo at the height of his culinary fame, in the 1997 Julia Roberts comedy “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” certainly helped normalize it. In the scene — referenced twice in Rebecca Halpern’s documentary about him, “Love, Charlie” — the bespectacled Trotter, overseeing a frantic kitchen and hoping to please Roberts’ star restaurant critic, barks at a cook, “I will kill your whole family if you don’t get this right! I need this perfect!”
We don’t learn if he ad-libbed this line (that would have been a telling detail), but judging from the life story Halpern has to tell, it encapsulates what he was ultimately known for: drive, dedication to high standards and not always the best behavioral instincts. Trotter — who died in 2013, one year after he’d closed his legendary eponymous restaurant at the 25-year mark — proves more...

As more live sports programming migrates from linear TV to streaming, Roku is rolling out a new area within its streaming interface designed to help fans follow the action.
Dubbed a sports “experience,” the area within Roku is a centralized hub for sports programming, with the goal of reducing the friction of toggling between separate apps in order to track various events.
This year alone has seen an explosion of streaming exclusives, from NFL Thursday Night Football on Amazon Prime Video to Major League Baseball on Apple and Peacock to a wide array of ESPN+ games, among them NHL and college football. Netflix has also quietly been exploring adding live sports programming.
In a blog post, Alex Hill, Roku’s director of live & sports, said the new offering encompasses pro and college football, pro and college basketball, hockey, baseball, and soccer. Streaming providers include DirecTV, Fox Sports, FuboTV, Paramount+, Peacock,...

Charlie Collier, after more than two decades in broadcasting and cable TV, has jumped ship from the traditional television biz — betting that TV’s future is all about streaming.
As first reported by Variety, Collier is leaving his post as CEO of Fox Entertainment, departing from the Murdochs’ fiefdom to head up Roku Media, where he’ll oversee content and ad sales for the Roku Channel starting next month.
For Roku, recruiting the high-profile TV exec who brought such hits as “Mad Men,” “Breaking Bad” and “The Walking Dead” to the small screen can be viewed as a shift toward more strategic — rather than tactical — spending on original content. Not incidentally, Collier also is familiar with the content economics of the free-streaming space: Fox Corp. spent 440 million to buy Tubi in 2020, which has served as a monetization outlet for Fox TV programming.
The move signals that Roku plans to spend more on original content.

Exclusive: Before Anthony Bourdain and Gordon Ramsey there was Charlie Trotter, the O.G. of bad boy chefs.
The late culinary master, who earned Michelin stars at his restaurants in Chicago and Las Vegas, is the subject of Rebecca Halpern’s debut documentary Love, Charlie: The Rise and Fall of Chef Charlie Trotter. Greenwich Entertainment announced today it has acquired North American rights to the film, with plans to release it in theaters later this year.
Trotter authored or co-authored 14 cookbooks, hosted a PBS cooking show and even earned a humanitarian of the year award from an association of culinary professionals, in addition to launching successful restaurants. He was known for his flavorful cuisine, but his tongue could be tart.
He was “a gastronomic revolutionary,” according to a description of the film, “yet his tempestuous, competitive nature alienated many. Using never-before-seen archival material and new interviews with those who loved and loathed him,...

Fall in! Chef Cliff Crooks is back for a second tour as host of Chef Boot Camp, where the New York-based chef puts struggling professional cooks through a three-day gauntlet of drills designed to up their kitchen skills. If they’re lucky, they’ll be able to create something as mmm-mmm-good as his ricotta gnocchi dish (below) one day. And if we’re lucky, the insightful Crooks will send some our way. Is it true you’ve been working in restaurants since you were 15? Cliff Crooks: Oh, yeah. I started in high school, and not even in the back of the house. I started up front [as a busboy]. I really just love the environment, the people and no two days are the same. Who was your culinary hero growing up? In terms of the upper echelon of the food world, Emeril Lagasse was on TV at the time. He was like watching Superman.

“Weird Al” Yankovic has won five Grammys, sang countless parodies, and now penned his own biopic starring Daniel Radcliffe for the Roku Channel.
In a new teaser trailer for “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story,” Radcliffe belts “Like a Surgeon,” a riff on Madonna’s “Like a Virgin,” and swigs whiskey onstage. The shirtless (and ripped) Radcliffe already made headlines for his transformation into Weird Al, complete with a mullet and Hawaiian attire. The first look images made (curly-haired) waves with Radcliffe’s campy take on Weird Al’s unprecedented style.
“Anyone got an accordion?” Radcliffe as Weird Al says in the teaser.
Roku Original “Weird” will dive into the “untold true story” of the famed parody rockstar. Eric Appel serves as director and co-wrote the film with Yankovic himself. Both also executive produce.
Produced by Funny or Die and Tango, “Weird” began filming in February 2022. The official description for the...

Roku released the teaser for “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story,” produced by Funny Or Die and Tango, at its 2022 NewFronts presentation Tuesday. Yankovic co-wrote the film’s script with Eric Appel, who is also directing. The movie will stream on the Roku Channel this fall, with no release date set yet.

The teaser also shows the “Harry Potter” star bare-chested on stage taking a swig from a bottle of… something, and then spitting it into the air.

(Read our minute-by-minute live blog here.) Lagasse’s work is now complete, so a new special guest star, Curtis Stone, will take his place during next week’s second hour. As the kids say, we only stan legends.
And MasterChef Season 10 Episode 1 gave came out the gate with the iconic Emeril Lagasse on top of our coveted MasterChef trio of Gordon, Aaron, and Joe.
Can we keep Emeril forever?!
Gordon made sure he pointed it out multiple times that he's been trying to get Emeril to come on the show for the better part of a decade, and Gordon was practically gleeful that he wore down the Bam king.
But honestly, there wasn't a better time for him to pop up than the opening hour of a season devoted to legends, right?
It felt so good witnessing Emeril Lagasse onscreen in a format like this. As someone who recalls vividly coming home from school and watching his series with my grandmother while I did homework, his very presence brought back such fond memories.
Emeril has such a homey quality to him.

Bam! The 11th season premiere of “MasterChef” welcomed Emeril Lagasse, one of the most famous culinary artists in the world, as a special “Legend” to help mentor the all-new contestants. He joined up with host Gordon Ramsay and returning fan-fave judges Joe Bastianich and Aaron Sanchez. The last time “MasterChef” aired was Summer 2019, so it’s been two years since we’ve seen home cooks try their luck at impressing some of the most notable names in the food industry. The reason for the delay was the Covid-19 pandemic that shuttered most of the entertainment industry, however the show was finally able to film beginning in Fall 2020. How did Wednesday’s highly anticipated premiere play out?

Like almost every show on television, the new season of “MasterChef” was delayed in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The 10th season finale aired back in September 2019, making it more than a year since viewers last saw Gordon Ramsay crown an amateur home chef on the reality TV cooking show. (See the winners list.) The good news? Our collective patience has been worth the wait, as the program is gearing up for a special “Legends”-themed 11th season when it debuts in early summer on the Fox network.
