THR is reporting that the Nwa biopic Straight Outta Compton has found it's Dr. Dre and Eazy-e. We all ready knew that O'Shea Jackson Jr. was expected to play his father (Ice Cube) in the film, but now we can add two other names and faces into the mix.
Marcus Callender will play Dre, and Jason Mitchell is said to have landed the role of Eazy-e with an off-the-charts audition.
That's Callender on the right.
Jason Mitchell
Cube Jr.
The film has been in development for quite some time, and it got lost in the shuffle until Jonathan Herman did a major script overhaul in 2013 which breathed new life into the project.

Ice Cube's son O'Shea Jackson Jr. is apparently set to play his father in director F. Gary Gray's upcoming N.W.A. biopic "Straight Outta Compton" at Universal Pictures.
Cube himself, who has been reportedly pushing for this casting since February, describes the film as a "dramatic story that encompasses hip-hop, dope-dealing, Reaganomics, AIDS, Lapd, rap feuds, FBI, Pmrc, the Parental Advisory stickers on the records... all of it."
The film traces the roots of the seminal rap group and their rise to fame against the violence-plagued streets of L.A.'s Compton neighborhood. "The Italian Job" helmer Gray is directing from a script by Jonathan Herman.
Universal haven't confirmed the casting, but a full cast could be announced before the end of the week. Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, Tomica Woods-Wright, Will Packer and Matt Alvarez will produce.

Finally, Universal’s N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton is moving forward, with news from The Wrap that Ice Cube and director F. Gary Gray (The Italian Job) have cast Cube’s son O’Shea Jackson Jr. to play the rapper. The film, which was originally at New Line, has been in development for some time, but if Jackson has officially come aboard, that would suggest that Straight Outta Compton is at last getting close to rolling cameras.
Universal didn’t confirm the casting, but The Wrap claims that “multiple individuals” involved with the film have assured them that the part recently went to Jackson, despite his lack of acting experience. Don’t chalk the casting up to sheer nepotism, though – Cube auditioned multiple candidates, including professional rappers and established actors, before settling on Jackson.

F. Gary Gray is directing an Nwa biopic for Universal. It's based off a Jonathan Herman script called Straight Outta Compton that Ice Cube himself has praised as being a realistic portrayal of how the rap group's early 90s West Coast perspective was formed and executed.
The Wrap reports that after a long campaign by Cube to get his son O'Shea Jackson Jr. the part as a younger Ice Cube has finally paid off with multiple sources reporting Jackson Jr will debut playing his father. Which only seems like nepotism when you consider Easy-e's son was also lobbying to play his father, but rumors suggest an unknown actor (not Easy-e's son) will be cast to take that role.
This is a tough call without having seen O'Shea Jackson Jr. act. Think about it, gents: how easy would it be to play your father for your first big screen gig? Ok,...

Ice Cube and director F. Gary Gray have cast the iconic rapper's son O'Shea Jackson Jr. to play the original N.W.A. member in Universal's biopic “Straight Outta Compton,” multiple individuals familiar with the long-gestating project have told TheWrap. Universal did not confirm the casting. Gray (“The Italian Job”) is directing from a script by Jonathan Herman, which Ice Cube has previously described as a comprehensive “dramatic story that encompasses hip-hop, dope-dealing, Reaganomics, AIDS, Lapd, rap feuds, FBI, Pmrc, the Parental Advisory stickers on the records… all of it.” Ice Cube revealed in February that he was pushing for his son to play him in.

Recall back in February, when we posted some details on the casting of Universal Pictures N.W.A. biopic, directed by F. Gary Gray (with Jonathan Herman writing the last draft), and produced by Ice Cube, former member of the seminal rap group. Also worth noting, Eazy-e's widow, Tomica Woods, who inherited his share of Nwa song rights, is also said to be involved in the project as a producer. To recap on our last update, both Eazy E's son and daughter claimed that they were either in the running, or would be the best fits to play their father in the movie. Easy E's son said that there was a "high probability" that he'd play the part, and Eazy...

It’s been so long since we’d heard anything concrete about Platinum Dunes' plans to remake Alfred Hitchcock’s classic beaky chiller The Birds that we started to wonder whether it had contracted Avian Flu, kicked the development bucket, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisible. But it would appear that re-imagined parrot is alive and squawking, as Variety reports that Dutch director Diederik Van Rooijen will handle the megaphone.Well, we say, “will”. We’ve been here before on the Birds front, with Martin Campbell previously attached to call the shots and Naomi Watts linked with the lead role in the past. Neither is still involved.Universal and the Platinum Dunes team are, somewhat sensibly, making it clear that this redo will owe more to Daphne du Maurier’s short story than Hitchcock’s film, though the plot is still largely a secret, with Jonathan Herman...

Have you heard the name Diederik Van Rooijenc If so you're probably Dutch and have a familiarity with a television series titled "Penoza", which has now been remade as ABC's "Red Widow", or the thriller Taped. Otherwise, he's a complete unknown and he just might be making his Hollywood feature debut with a remake of Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds for Universal and producer Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes. The project has been discussed for as long as I can remember with Naomi Watts tipped to take over Tippi Hedren's role from the '63 original, which saw a horde of birds attacking San Francisco inhabitants. Jonathan Herman wrote the most recent draft of the screenplay with word this film will likely nod more toward Daphne du Maurier's short story than did Hitchcock's. I'm not certain, but I believe this may be the first time a director has actually been...

Universal Pictures has hired Dutch helmer Diederik Van Rooijen to direct the remake of the Alfred Hitchcock classic The Birds , which Platinum Dunes and Mandalay Pictures are producing. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news and mentions that Van Rooijen is best known as the writer and director of the Dutch TV series "Penoza," which has been remade for U.S. audiences as ABC's "Red Widow." Naomi Watts was attached to star in the film for a while, but she is no longer involved. The most recent version of the script was written by Jonathan Herman. Michael Bay, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller are producing at Platinum Dunes, while Peter Guber and Cathy Schulman are producing for Mandalay Pictures.

Though he’s recently signed on to race between the feet of large transforming robots, screaming things in a Boston accent, Mark Wahlberg has also decided to produce an upcoming movie about hacking, yet to be titled. The movie is loosely based on an article that appeared in GQ called “The Hacker Is Watching”, which may or may not end up as the actual title for the flick, depending on who’s feeling lazy on that particular day.
Though he’s only signed on to produce, the mere presence of somebody like Mark Wahlberg might have you picturing somebody hacking/being hacked during a scene in which somebody drives a car recklessly through the streets of New York with explosions in the background, though this movie is actually a little more low-key: instead, it concerns a high school which becomes the target of some nasty hacker’s game, what with...

Okay, so this started as a spec script, it then made the oft-vaunted “Hollywood Black List” of acclaimed but as yet unmade films and then, rather than being a Heat-style heist film, it is being re-worked as an Ocean’s 11-style action comedy. As if all of that weren’t enough, Steve Carell, who seems relatively unlikely as an action star, is set to star.
The script tells of a bank robber who, having served a stretch, is recruited by the FBI, Catch Me If You Can-style, to entrap a fellow crook who is planning a big heist. I suppose with films like Pineapple Express showing that unlikely characters can make funny and effective action stars, the success of this one will all come down to the execution. Joel Silver, who knows a thing or two about action films, will co-produce with Carell. No word yet on other casting news or even a director.

[1] Steve Carell's been doing quite well for himself in his post-Office career. He's already got several films lined up for the next couple of years, including Bennett Miller's Foxcatcher and the magician comedy Burt Wonderstone. Now the latest addition to his slate is Conviction, a heist film which he'll produce and star in. Jonathan Herman's Black List script centers around a convicted bank robber who's forced by the FBI to entrap his former protege. Which sounds good, except that while Herman's original screenplay had a tone similar to Heat, it's now being reworked as an action comedy in the vein of 48 Hours or Ocean's Eleven. That seems like a pretty major shift, though without having read the script I can't say for certain whether it's a terrible idea. The project has yet to confirm a writer to draft a new version of the script. [Deadline [2]] After the jump,...

Steve Carell is attached to star in and produce the heist thriller "Conviction" for Warner Bros and Silver Pictures reports Deadline.
Jonathan Herman penned the script about a mastermind bank robber who serves five years in prison following a botched heist who is forced by an FBI agent to entrap his protege as the upstart pulls off a multimillion-dollar job.
Originally a serious drama along "Heat" lines, the script is now being turned into a "48 Hours"-esque action comedy with Carell in the lead. A new writer will be hired soon to redraft the script while Carell, Joel Silver and Andrew Rona will produce.

As one project (Vegas magician comedy Burt Wonderstone) slides off his development schedule and into production, Steve Carell is adding another possible movie to take its place on the To Do List: he'll produce and star in heist pic Conviction.
While we're pretty sure the title will change (since it was already used by that based-on-real-life Hilary Swank legal drama last year), that's not the only thing that will be shifted about the script.

While we're pretty sure the title will change (since it was already used by that based-on-real-life Hilary Swank legal drama last year), that's not the only thing that will be shifted about the script.

Steve Carell is getting ready to pull off a job.
The "Crazy, Stupid, Love" star is set to mastermind the new action comedy, "Conviction," according to Deadline.
Carell will produce and star in the film about an imprisoned master thief who is forced by an FBI agent to entrap his protege as the upstart pulls off a multimillion-dollar robbery.
The screenplay by Jonathan Herman originally had a darker tone akin to Michael Mann's "Heat" but is being reworked as an action comedy along the lines of "48 Hrs." and "Ocean's Eleven." Joel Silver, who is certainly familiar with that genre, will produce the film along with Carell, and the hunt is currently on for a new writer.
Steve Carell has been lining up the film projects now that he's no longer running "The Office." He shot "Seeking a Friend For the End of the World" with Keira Knightley earlier this...

As Deadline lets us know, Steve Carell is set to produce and star in Warner Bros’. Conviction, a heist film written on spec by Jonathan Herman. The Black List screenplay revolves around “a mastermind bank robber who serves five years in prison following a botched heist who is forced by an FBI agent to entrap his protege as the upstart pulls off a multimillion-dollar job.”
That little synopsis doesn’t totally indicate what direction the proceedings may take, which makes its development a little appropriate. You see, this was initially planned as a serious picture in the vein of Heat, but we can now expect an action comedy that bears a greater resemblance to Ocean’s Eleven and 48 Hrs. Joel Silver (who just so happened to be behind Richard Donner‘s comedy) is also producing with Silver Pictures’ Andrew Rona, and a writer is being sought to work on a new draft.

Ok, Jonathan Herman, we've got good news and bad news. The good news? Your "Heat"-esque heist script "Conviction", which if you'll remember you sold on spec to Warner Bros. and Silver Pictures two years ago, is finally going forward as a major motion picture starring Steve Carell! The bad news? Uh...well, see, Steve Carell is a funny-man, as you're no doubt aware, so we're bringing in a new writer to rework your original screenplay as an action-comedy. In other words, it won't at all be the movie you envisioned it as. But who cares, right? Steve Carell! Major motion picture! And...

Getting your script picked up in Hollywood can be both a blessing and a curse. You can see your vision realized as it should be on the big screen or you can see it ripped apart, rewritten, retooled, dumped, re-acquired and re-imagined until it barely resembles the thing you first wrote. For Black List approved Jonathan Herman, he's seeing his work get a makeover. His script, "Conviction," was first acquired a couple of years ago by Warner Bros and Silver Pictures, and it was described as a heist picture in the vein of "Heat," that centered on a mastermind robber…...

For the fourth consecutive year Hollywood has selected its Black List, a compilation of the top unproduced screenplays for 2009. Over 300 film professionals were asked to submit the titles of up to ten of their favorite screenplays. The only condition for the picks were that the projects would not be released in theaters this year. That means some of the Black List honorees may be in the process of being turned into movies but by far the majority remain thoughts on digital ink, a blueprint for grand dramatic ideas, high-reaching adventure and controversial ideas waiting to be burned to light.
For a screenplay to have made it onto the Black List it must have received at least five votes for it. Some scripts have five votes while the top-rated screenplay received 47 votes. That doesn't mean that the script with the most votes is the best screenplay of the year; it means...
