Nominations for the 39th Annual Lucille Lortel Awards were announced today by Amber Iman and George Abud, two stars of Broadway’s “Lempicka.” The Lortels honor outstanding achievement in Off-Broadway theater. The 2024 ceremony will take place on Sunday, May 5 at NYU Skirball Center. The Lucille Lortel Awards are produced by the Off-Broadway League and Lucille Lortel Theatre, with additional support provided by Tdf.
It’s common for productions to begin their life Off-Broadway before transferring to the Main Stem, so many of this year’s Tony Awards hopefuls are among the list of Lortel nominations. Chief among these contenders is “Hell’s Kitchen,” the semi-autobiographical musical from Alicia Keys. That tuner garnered five Lortel nominations. These include Best Musical, Best Choreography for Camille A. Brown, a Lead Performer bid for Maleah Joi Moon, and Featured Performer bids for Shoshana Bean and Kecia Lewis. All performance categories at the Lortel Awards are gender neutral.

Alvin Ing, a pioneering Asian American actor who appeared on Broadway in Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Flower Drum Song and Stephen Sondheim’s Pacific Overtures and whose guest roles on numerous television series stretched from the 1970s until very recently, died July 31 at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, California, of Covid-19 complications. He was 89.
Ing’s death was previously confirmed by his representation, Shushu Entertainment, but today his reps disclosed that the fully-vaccinated Ing was first diagnosed with pneumonia in mid-July and then confirmed to have Covid-19 a few days later. After two weeks of battling the illness, he died due to cardiac arrest, they said.
“Honolulu native and American Army veteran with a gift to serve, he felt a duty to himself and his fellow citizens to be fully vaccinated,” said spokesperson Shaina Manlangit in a statement approved by Shushu.
Deaths and hospitalizations from breakthrough Covid are considered to be extremely rare.

Stephen Sondheim is widely regarded as one of the greatest composers in musical theatre. He has claimed eight Tony Awards (more trophies than any other composer), eight Grammy Awards, and even picked up an Oscar for the “Dick Tracy” tune “Sooner or Later.” It may come as a surprise given his stature in the industry, that Sondheim is still an Emmy short of an Egot. More surprising still: Emmy voters have never even nominated him. This year, he could finally join the elusive Egot club thanks to the variety special “Tell the Story: Celebrating Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman’s Assassins.”

Exclusive: For those concerned that the 4-hour CBS Studios miniseries based on James Comey’s book A Higher Loyalty might be a glowing portrait of the ex-FBI Director fired by Donald Trump: the series will include the embarrassing incident where FBI agent Peter Strzok and FBI lawyer Lisa Page — who were reportedly engaged in an extramarital affair — exchanged texts when Strzok was spearheading the Russia probe that reportedly disparaged Trump and favored Hillary Clinton during the presidential elections. It was a major embarrassment to the bureau Comey oversaw.

The best thing about Classic Stage Company's small-scale, extensively trimmed production of Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman's extraordinarily-written 1976 musical, Pacific Overtures, is a chance to see a terrific ensemble of actors taken from the New York stage's severely underutilized pool of Asian-American talent. The company includes notables of the musical stage such as Ann Harada, Orville Mendoza, Thom Sesma and Marc Oka.

After months of speculation, an early departure of Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman’s play “Assassins,” the absence of Aaron Tveit in the pictures that were made public, and following his presence in a teaser that only showcased images from Graceland’s sophomore season, the actor has finally been seen in public alongside castmate Daniel Sunjata at NBC Universal’s Summer Press Day. Though there has not been a confirmation in regards of how active of a role the actor will play in the Graceland‘s third season, the outlook for a full return as a regular seem better than ever, if there was ever any risk at all. According to early reports from Zap2it, when questioned about Tveit’s character’s future, Daniel Sunjata, who, so far along with the rest of the Gracelanders had remained tight-lipped finally spoke about the fate of Mike. “He’s alive-ish,” he said.

Directed by fast-rising talent Jamie Lloyd, a Donmar Warehouse-veteran whose recent productions (Richard III, Macbeth, Urinetown, The Commitments) have won raves and awards, it's a show that delves deeper into the darkness at the heart of John Weidman's book, upping the madness and macabre ante inherent in the material. Broadway actor Aaron Tveit has said that he would love to star in a future Wicked movie.
The Les Misérables actor played the character of Fiyero on Broadway in 2008, and told Digital Spy that he thinks the musical will translate well as a movie.
"That's such a fantastic story, and they do a really good job at creating that world on stage," he said. "That would be a fantastic movie.
"Oz the Great and Powerful created such a beautiful, colourful, vibrant world, and I think Wicked could do the same thing. The Wicked book is actually much darker, so they could also go underneath and show that in the film."

There are two upcoming movie musicals that, for a long time, I've wanted to make into motion pictures, should someone with money be willing to give me the funds to make them -- Into The Woods and The Last 5 Years. I'm both nervous and excited to see how directors Rob Marshall and Richard Lagravenese, respectfully, have interpreted the material I hold so close to my heart. I am especially nervous for Into The Woods, given Marshall's less than impressive track record. If someone is going to screw up something I cherish, it should be me. Of course, there are far more than two musicals I have a deep connection to. Some have already been made into films, like Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and Les Miserables, but there is a vast collection of musicals I have thought could make fantastic films, but have never been made.
