Netflix’s Spanish Civil War zombie movie Valley of the Dead (Malnazidos) is an entertaining stumble through familiar undead territory, courtesy of co-directors Javier Ruiz Caldera and Alberto de Toro. As such, it won’t surprise anyone who’s seen a zombie movie before, but it pushes all the right buttons, thanks to genre-savvy direction, likeable performances and a snappy script.
Valley of the Dead begins in 1938, in the middle of the Spanish Civil War, which has bitterly divided the losing Republican side and the Nazi-assisted Franco-led Nationalist side. In a chilling opening sequence, Nazi soldiers murder a wedding party and then spray the corpses with a blue gas, under the watchful eye of their Commandant (Francisco Reyes).

Los Angeles-based Secuoya Studios is developing a new series version of “El Zorro” in collaboration with John Gertz – founder of Zorro Productions and a producer on “The Mask of Zorro” and “The Legend of Zorro” movies titles – along with former Sony execs Andy Kaplan and Jesús Torres and Miami-based Secuoya Studios exec Sergio Pizzolante. There's a long - and sometimes pretty fantastic - history of James Bond inspired comedies around the globe and while the Oss 117 films have long been held as the best of the lot to come out of Europe they may very well be challenged for that position by Javier Ruiz Caldera's upcoming Spy Time (Anacleto Agente Secreto). This Christmas is going to become a living hell to Adolfo. Not only does his girlfriend leave him for being a guy with no ambition who works in a security company, but to top it off, he becomes the objective of a series of thugs led by Vázquez, a dangerous criminal who just escaped prison. Witching And Bitching The London Spanish Film Festival returns for its 10th birthday with a diverse programme running from September 25 to October 5.
Crowd-pleasers inlcude the latest films by Álex de la Iglesia and Daniel Sánchez Arévalo, along with the surprise Spanish box office hit from the end of last year, Three Many Weddings (Javier Ruiz Caldera, 2013). But the returning Basque and Catalan sidebars also offer the chance to discover films - representing a range of genres - that might otherwise slip under the radar given the paucity of Spanish titles that make it to these shores.
The retrospective of the often-controversial Vicente Aranda includes several UK premieres, most notably Freedom Fighters (1996), which boasts a cast including Ariadna Gil, Victoria Abril, Ana Bélen, and Loles Léon. With its third edition, which concluded on Wednesday, the Panama International Film Festival continued the year-on-year growth that is turning it into one of the region’s most important showcases for Ibero-American cinema.
For the first time this year, the festival played host to Meets, a film market aimed at fostering networks for co-production, sales and distribution of Latin American projects. Panama City was also chosen by Egeda and Fipca as the venue for their first Premios Platino awards, also during the week of the festival.
“Having all these filmmakers in one place has been extraordinary,” says festival director Pituka Ortega Heilbron. “Meets has added to this great vibe around the city. And Premios Platino could have been in so many other locations, in any other week of the year, so we were very honoured that it was here. It all underlines the festival’s growing significance.”

A brain, an athlete, a basket case, a princess and a criminal…sound familiar? Unlike its central band of spectres, the influences on this supernatural Spanish comedy are plain to see. Opening and closing with a prom scene, Ghost Graduation (‘Promoción fantasma’) revisits the American high-school movies of the Eighties, emerging like a cross between Ghostbusters and The Breakfast Club- with more than just a dance montage as a nod to the latter.
Our humble, hangdog hero is Modesto (Raúl Arévalo), a high school teacher plagued with the ability to see the dead. Rather than realise his gift, he instead begins to worry that he’s losing his mind. Moments before the Toronto Int. Film Festival makes their first wave announcement of 70 plus titles, Venice Days (which several in the industry equate to Venice’s answer to Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight) have announced their line-up of twelve competing films with a slew of special screenings. Among the familiar items we find a pair from Sundance in John Krokidas’ Kill Your Darlings and Cherien Dabis’ May In The Summer seemingly receiving their international premieres. The North American strong section also includes the world preems in Bruce Labruce’s Montreal-shot (see pic above) Gerontophilia, Sean Gullette’s (expanded short into feature length film) Traitors, and the India-Canadian co-production of Richie Mehta’s Siddharth (the tale of a chain-wallah who travels across India in search of his missing son) which on papers comes across as a more potent version of fantasy film Slumdog Millionaire. Also from the U.S. and part of the growing trend of festival-pairing,...

Will Smith's Overbrook Entertainment is planning a remake of the Spanish comedy "Ghost Graduation" reports Variety.
The story centers on a teacher with paranormal abilities who helps a group of ghosts confined to the high school where they died years earlier in a fire.
Javier Ruiz Caldera helmed the original which was released earlier this year. There's no plan for Smith to star at this point, right now the company is seeking a writer to pen the adaptation.

A new one-sheet and trailer have arrived for Javier Ruiz Caldera's new Spanish horror comedy 'Promocion fantasma' (Aka 'Ghost Graduation'). The new one-sheet for the movie makes it look more like an 'American Pie' sequel (or 'Spanish Pie' I guess), but at least the trailer moulds it more into supernatural territory. I'm certain that if any of us here at the Horror Asylum spoke Spanish we'd probably think everything being said in the new trailer would be hilarious! Perhaps one of our Spanish readers could give us a heads up on this. Either way the trailer features hot Spanish schoolgirls, possession and a Ouiji board so do we really care at this stage? Raul Arevalo, Andrea Duro (below), Javier Bodalo, Alexandra Jimenez, Jaime Olias, Alex Maruny, Anna Castillo and Aura Garrido. Check out the plot info, new one-sheet and the trailer below!...

Javier Ruiz Caldera ( Spanish Movie ) has completed his latest effort, another mix of horror and comedy called Promocion Fantasma ( Ghost Graduation ). Raúl Arévalo, Andrea Duro ( Juan of the Dead ) and Javier Bódalo ( The Devil's Backbone ) star and, today, we have a look at the poster and trailer. Arévalo plays Modesto, a teacher suffering from spectral visions, meaning he occasionally sees dead people. Not only has this cost him a fortune in psychiatric payments, but has been the reason behind his dismissal at various schools. However, his luck changes when he gets hired at el Monforte, and is put in charge of five troubled pupils who have converted the prestigious school into a house of horrors. But getting these five kids to graduate won't be an easy task -- they've all...

While we're always a bit skeptical about giving coverage to yet another in the seemingly never-ending barrage of spoof movies, this... this one was just too weird and too bizarre not to at least give a mention to. Via Slash Film, below you'll find the trailer to (brace yourself) Spanish Movie , directed by Javier Ruiz Caldera and produced by the same company that made a lot of the original films being lampooned here. We're amazed (and slightly baffled) that a film exists which spoofs The Orphanage , [Rec] , Pans Labyrinth , Open Your Eyes , as well as non genre features such as The Sea Inside and No Country For Old Men . (I kinda chuckled at the [Rec] gag, actually.) Even more bizarre is that compared to the slew of American made spoof movies (and from my personal...

People have been emailing about this one all weekend, and until now it's stayed off the radar - likely because it only opened in Spain. While the U.S. has been saturated with films like Scary Movie, Epic Movie, Date Movie, Not Another Teen Movie, and the classic Shriek If You Know What I Did Last Friday The Thirteenth, now the Spanish market has their own parody in the form of Javier Ruiz Caldera's Spanish Movie.
The film just opened on the 4th and features parodies of films such as The Orphanage, Pans Labyrinth, [Rec] and more.
Check out a trailer below the jump, and be sure to hit the official site for loads of clips and music videos - but beware, they're not subtitled.

Never, ever make the mistake of thinking that the Us has a lock on shitty, terrible 'parody' comedy films. There's an argument to be made that we're not even close to the worst offender when it comes to making quick-buck films like Date Movie and Epic Movie. As proof, here's the trailer for Spanish Movie, a film produced in Spain that pokes fun at a broad swath of globally-recognizable Spanish-language films. The references are diverse, ranging from The Orphanage and Pan's Labyrinth to The Sea Inside and No Country For Old Men. (Not exactly a Spanish film, but Javier Bardem is close enough, I guess.) Some of the films used as material are a bit out of date, but the comedy on display in the trailer is hardly fresh. Javier Ruiz Caldera directs the film, which is expected to become one of the year's biggest box-office successes in Spain. It...
