When “Surge” debuted at Sundance in January (a full nine months before its release) the Ben Whishaw-starring thriller seemed like a surefire success—a modern-day “Taxi Driver” or realistic “Joker.” But this week, the film has been dumped on VOD with a little advertisement, promotion, or reviews. With such an appealing star, genre, and set-up, how can this be?

Ben Whishaw stars in Aneil Karia’s feature debut.
Vertigo Releasing has acquired UK and Ireland rights to thriller Surge, starring Ben Whishaw, from Protagonist Pictures.
The distributor hopes to release the film theatrically this Spring, dependent on the easing of pandemic restrictions.
Surge premiered at Sundance last year, where Whishaw won a special jury prize for his performance. It also marks the feature directorial debut of Aneil Karia, a Screen Star of Tomorrow in 2014, who more recently directed The Long Goodbye, a powerful short starring Riz Ahmed, which has been nominated for a BIFA and London Critics’ Circle award.

As Joseph (Ben Whishaw) sits at the table with his parents (Ellie Haddington and Ian Gelder), he puts his mouth to a glass. He wraps his lips around the rim as his breathing starts to heave. The others continue eating; he starts to lock his jaw. Then the glass cracks. He’s done this before a lot but never like this, and when he finds himself spitting blood into the bathroom sink with his mom screaming on the other side of the door, it seems that his tics have finally caught up with him.
That’s not to say he’s ever been a lax guy, but, to put it lightly, some things are getting to him. There are too many people, not enough manners. It’s too loud outside his apartment, too quiet inside his own head. It seems that only his job as an airport checkpoint officer grants...

There’s mannered, there’s manic, and then there’s the malfunctioning pinball-machine delirium that Ben Whishaw brings to “Surge”: a blinking, buzzing, flashing clatter of hyper-accelerated impulses, chicken-fried synapses and staggered hypnic jerks that never culminate in sleep. You wouldn’t expect stillness from a film called “Surge,” and in that respect only does Whishaw zig where you expect him to zig — to say nothing of his character, a humdrum airport worker who one day snaps in spectacularly feral fashion, embarking on the unlikeliest of London crime sprees. It’s quite a performance, sure to exhilarate some and aggravate others, and it joins the dots of Aneil Karia’s stylish if somewhat overstimulated debut feature while adding several disconnected ones of its own.
A rare shot of genuinely frenzied energy in British genre cinema, “Surge” seems likely to prompt comparisons to the recent work of Benny and Josh Safdie — in particular,...

Freddie Jones, the veteran English stage and screen character actor known for his long stint on the ITV soap Emmerdale, died Tuesday in the UK after a brief illness, according to his agent Lesley Duff. He was 91.
“Freddie was a much loved and admired actor, known for his triumphs in classical theatre, film and television,” Duff said in a statement. “He will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him and most especially his family.”
The father of actors Toby and Casper Jones and writer-director Rupert Jones, he left Emmerdale last year after playing Sandy Thomas since 2005 — with a nearly yearlong hiatus in 2008-09. The popular soap has aired in the UK since 1972.
Born on September 12, 1927, in Staffordshire, Jones got a late start in acting — landing his first screen roles while in in the early 1960s. But he would have a prolific career, racking up more...

This May, Scream Factory is set to release two IFC Midnight films on Blu-ray and DVD. Up first is Kaleidoscope, starring Toby Jones as a man who has made great strides to free himself of his past until it comes back to haunt him. Then there is Desolation (read Heather Wixson's review here), which follows a widow, her son, and best friend into the woods... and usually nothing good happens in the woods in a horror movie.

They say you should never meet your idols, and this short film learns that lesson the hard way.
“Pumpkin” centers on Brian, a Mel Gibson superfan who has “What Women Want” and “The Patriot” posters tacked on his bedroom wall and who attends a Mel Gibson “support group.” Brian wishes he could go back in time and stop his idol from making “The Beaver” (don’t we all?) and one of his fellow superfans has a plan. Taking a page from “Black Mirror,” Brian is given a Tamagotchi that transports him back in time, but what he discovers there will change him and the course of movie history forever.

Lots of mentally fragile guys are obsessed with their mothers, especially when it comes to cinematic tropes. Of course, there's Psycho, a giant of a film and a close cousin to Rupert Jones' debut feature, Kaleidoscope. Out today on VOD and in select theatres from IFC Midnight, Kaleidoscope is the tale of an ex-con who's having trouble re-integrating into society. Jones' brother, the always-terrific Toby Jones (Harry Potter, Atomic Blonde, The Hunger Games, Berberian Sound Studio), plays the disturbed man Carl, who we follow through his apartment, some memories, and perhaps misremembered events. Elements of Psycho echo within Kaleidoscope, but so too does Stanley Kubrick's masterful The Shining, Roman Polanski's The Tenant, and Spider (David Cronenberg's 2007 film centering on a schizophrenic man also re-entering society played by Ralph Fiennes). Carl meets up with...

There may be no better actor alive to play a socially maladroit misfit than Toby Jones. It's a fact of which his brother Rupert Jones also seems to be aware, since he's written and directed a terrific vehicle for him. A dark psychological thriller clearly influenced by Alfred Hitchcock (who Jones played so memorably in The Girl), Kaleidoscope, also starring veteran British actress Anne Reid (The Mother), provides juicy opportunities for its leads to deliver tour-de-force performances — and they don't disappoint.

"You left clues everywhere..." IFC has debuted the first official trailer for an intriguing psychological thriller titled Kaleidoscope, from writer/director Rupert Jones. The film stars Toby Jones as middle-aged man just released from prison. The film is apparently about his relationship to his mother, and asks the question: "is it possible to escape our past?" The cast includes Anne Reid, Sinead Matthews, Manjinder Virk, Karl Johnson, Deborah Findlay, and Frederick Schmidt. This looks like a creepy, mysterious head-trip kind of film, but actually quite good with seemingly lots of twists. Per the description: "At the heart of this modern day Psycho are some unsettling questions: Can we ever escape the role in which we are cast by our early circumstances? Must a perpetrator first be a victim?" This trailer is definitely worth checking out. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Rupert Jones' Kaleidoscope, direct from YouTube: This intense,...

She’s played Valerie Tatlock in Coronation Street and Daniel Craig’s lover in The Mother, and now stars in the thriller Kaleidoscope. Anne Reid talks to Rebecca Nicholson about awards, Victoria Wood and why it’s good to show older people falling in love on screen
‘What can I tell you without giving the whole plot away? That’s the problem,” smiles Anne Reid. We’re meeting to talk about Kaleidoscope, a knotty, taut and claustrophobic thriller starring Reid and Toby Jones, directed by his brother, Rupert Jones. It’s the kind of brilliantly insidious film that reveals its secrets slowly and cleverly. It’s far better to see it knowing absolutely nothing at all about it. Which, of course, makes it very difficult to talk about. “Well, let’s not tell people then,” Reid decides, firmly. “I play the mother of Toby Jones. It was a great part.

This tense, Hitchcockian thriller would score praise from the Master of Suspense himself. Taking the mother/son relationship to a new and ever weirder level, the unwanted appearance of Carl’s (Toby Jones) mum interrupts a potential date, and throws him into a tailspin of psychological dread.
