Keith LeBlanc, a drummer on several early hip-hop releases and a key producer on albums by Nine Inch Nails and more, has passed away at the age of 70.
The sad news was reported by his record label On-u Sound, with no cause of death revealed.
LeBlanc helped pioneer the early hip-hop sound as a drummer in the Sugarhill House Band alongside bassist Doug Wimbish (Living Colour) and guitarist Skip “Little Axe” McDonald. The three musicians went on to form the industrial hip-hop group Tackhead, who released four albums from 1987 to 2014.
As a producer and mixer, LeBlanc worked with a number of prominent artists, including Nine Inch Nails, Living Colour, Peter Gabriel, The Cure, and Ministry.
He was a major contributor to Nin’s debut album, Pretty Hate Machine, co-producing standout tracks “Head Like a Hole” and “Down in It,” and engineering or mixing several other songs on the LP.

The end of the performance featured many names listed on the screen, including Lance Reddick, Norman Lear, Ron Cephas Jones, Sinead O’Connor and Treat Williams, but one name was notably missing from the tribute this year, and that was Angus Cloud.

Andrea Bocelli performed a rendition of the song “Time to Say Goodbye” with his son Matteo Bocelli to accompany the Academy’s annual obituary section. Perhaps mindful of previous years, in which eagle-eyed viewers have jumped on omissions, this year’s “In Memoriam” — which began with footage of the recently deceased Russian opposition leader and subject of last year’s winning documentary Navalny — seemed comprehensive but at the same time not enough.

The 2024 Academy Awards got to a late start on Sunday, after hundreds of protestors shut down a section of Sunset Boulevard— starting off an awards show filled with nods to the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict.
Pro-Palestinian protestors reportedly blocked Sunset Boulevard with Palestinian flags and signs, some including some that said “No awards for genocide” and “Lives have been snubbed.” According to Variety, dozens of high-profile guests and award nominees were late because of the disruption and were forced to sit in traffic or fully abandon their vehicles and walk the remaining distance to the ceremony.

As a fierce advocate of women’s rights and a converted Muslim, Sinead O’Connor was not a fan of Donald Trump — and that’s putting it lightly. In a 2021 interview, the Irish singer-songwriter said, “I actually do believe Donald Trump is the biblical Devil, the fucker.”
So you can understand her estate’s consternation over Trump’s decision to play O’Connor’s version of “Nothing Compares 2 U” at his recent campaign rallies. In a statement released on Monday, O’Connor’s estate demanded that Trump cease playing the song immediately.

London, March 4 (Ians) The estate of the late Irish singer-songwriter-social activist Sinead O’Connor has denounced the Republican Party’s presidential hopeful Donald Trump’s use of her performance of ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ at his recent campaign rallies, reports ‘Variety’.
The single ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ was a part of her best-selling 1990 album ‘I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got’, which sold seven million copies worldwide. It was voted the No. 1 world single of the year at the Billboard Music Awards.
In a statement to ‘Variety’, O’Connor’s estate and label Chrysalis Records demanded that Trump cease playing the song immediately.
O’Connor, incidentally, passed away at the age of 56 on July 26, 2023, after converting to Islam in 2018. She was a lifelong critic of the Roman Catholic Church’s murky record of alleged child abuse.

Liam Gallagher has already made it clear he thinks the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is “full of Bumbaclarts,” and now he says the nomination of artists like Mariah Carey only reinforces his opinion.
Carey is one of this year’s 15 Hall of Fame nominees alongside Oasis and the likes of Ozzy Osbourne, Cher, Mary J. Blige, A Tribe Called Quest, and Sinead O’Connor. Speaking with The Sunday Times, Gallagher expressed that being nominated with such a range of artists devalues the whole idea of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame: “As much as I love Mariah Carey and all that, I want to say: do me a favor and fuck off. It’s like putting me in the rap hall of fame, and I don’t want to be part of anything that mentally disturbed.”

When you think of Ashlee Simpson, there’s probably only one image that comes to mind: her lip-syncing snafu on SNL, in which she went to perform her second song of the night, only for the playback to trigger her first song, “Pieces of Me”. She had been caught going full Milli Vanilli. And to get herself out of the situation, Simpson basically la-la’d her way off stage while doing a jig, leaving her band behind to “play”. Twenty years after the incident, Simpson is remembering the moment as a life lesson. But this may not be the case for others who also made some serious bonehead moves on SNL…
It’s extremely rare for musical guests on SNL to go through gaffes of Ashlee Simpson’s magnitude: musicians like Elvis Costello would instead raise intentional hell by playing whatever song he wanted, while Sinead O’Connor used her moment to send a message.

Oasis are among the finalists for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s Class of 2024. We won’t know for sure whether the band will be inducted until April, but frontman Liam Gallagher doesn’t seem to care either away.

Gallagher expounded on his thoughts in Twitter replies to fans. He called the Hall of Fame “a load of bollox” and said, “I don’t need some wank award by some geriatric in a cowboy hat,” he wrote. He also encouraged fans to vote for other nominees, such as Sinead O’Connor and Mariah Carey.

Harry Belafonte’s Daughters Criticize Grammys for Not Doing More to Recognize Singer During Ceremony
Harry Belafonte’s daughters, Shari and Gina, are calling out the Grammys for not doing more to recognize the late singer during the 2024 awards ceremony Sunday.
During the In Memoriam segment, Stevie Wonder, Annie Lennox, Fantasia Barrino and Jon Batiste took to the stage to perform emotional tributes for Tina Turner, Tony Bennett, Sinead O’Connor, Clarence Avant and more.
While they performed, images of other artists the music industry lost last year were displayed onscreen behind them, including Belafonte, while Batiste sang “The Best Is Yet to Come.”
But Shari and Gina feel the Grammys should have given the singer a special tribute, similar to the ones for Turner, Bennett, O’Connor and Avant.
“While the folks who had a bit more of a #shoutout on the #GrammyAwards this year were absolutely deserving of accolades, I’m a bit appalled that our father was not included in a #SpecialTribute and...

2023 was all about the joy of girlhood, so it's no surprise the biggest musical hits of the year were also for women and by women. Ahead of the 2024 Grammy Awards, women dominated nominations across categories. But the Feb. 4 ceremony celebrated not only women nominees, but also winners, performers, and presenters - at every age. From longtime legends to rising artists, women celebrated each other unabashedly in an industry that tends to emphasize youth and often pits women against each other. For the first time in years, an award show seemed to hit the mark on entertaining audiences across generations, striking the perfect chord between embracing nostalgia and highlighting newer talent.
Women nominees were up for every major category, and ultimately snagged the big wins, too. Phoebe Bridgers took home the most trophies with four wins, making her a first-time Grammy winner alongside Victoria Monét, Miley Cyrus, Karol G, and Lainey Wilson.

Music legend Stevie Wonder led the charge as stars paid tribute to the music legends the world lost last year at the 2024 Grammy Awards.
He kicked off the ceremony’s annual ‘In Memoriam’ segment by paying tribute to his late friend and fellow musical icon, Tony Bennett, who died in July 2023 at age 96, reports ‘People’ magazine.
“I remember hearing Tony Bennett singing ‘For Once in My Life’ when I was like 13 or 14 years old,” Stevie, 73, began the tribute. “But what’s amazing is I was able to actually sing the song with someone that I admired for so long, not just because of his voice, which was incredible, but because of his art, his love for art, his love for peace, his love for unity, his love for civil rights.”

Lenny Kravitz then came to honor the pioneer as a music executive and the “Black Godfather” of entertainment. Another performance began, this time featuring Jon Batiste with a rendition of “Lean on Me.” DJ Mark and Gangsta Boo from Three 6 Mafia and Magoo were also mentioned. P!nk celebrated her 44th birthday over the weekend, but not all of social media had well wishes for the pop singer. Yesterday, an X user took the time to post an image of British trans comedian Suzy Izzard (previously Eddie Izzard) along with “Happy birthday @pink,” seemingly in an attempt to insult her appearance.
But instead of letting trolls be trolls, P!nk took the opportunity to call out their behavior. “Thank you so much,” she wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. “I just showed my 12 year old daughter your post.

A month after the untimely death of Irish singer-songwriter Sinead O’Connor at age 56, Miley Cyrus has spoken about their 2013 conflict over the younger singer’s nudity in her video for “Wrecking Ball.”
The incident saw O’Connor write an open letter criticizing Cyrus for appearing nude in the “Wrecking Ball” music video. O’Connor called it a result of exploitation from the men around the former “Hannah Montana” actress.
“I was expecting there to be controversy and backlash, but I don’t think I expected other women to put me down or turn on me, especially women that had been in my position before,” Cyrus said Thursday night in her ABC concert special, “Endless Summer Vacation: Continued (Backyard Sessions).”

Ten years after Sinéad O’Connor wrote an open letter to Miley Cyrus criticizing her sexy “Wrecking Ball” video, the former “Hannah Montana” star said she now regards the Irish singer’s critiques in a different light.
O’Connor, who received enormous backlash after ripping up a photo of the pope on “Saturday Night Live” in 1992 to protest sexual abuse in the Catholic church, told Cyrus in 2013 that she was “pimping” herself in the video and to stop “getting naked.”
At the time of the song’s release, Cyrus told Rolling Stone that it was a “modern version” of O’Connor’s best-selling hit “Nothing Compares 2 U.” She then responded to O’Connor’s criticism of the single’s music video at the time by poking fun at her mental health struggles and tweeting, “Sinead. I don’t have time to write you an open letter cause I’m hosting and performing on ‘SNL’ this week.

Cancel culture has done much good for the industry. It has leveled titans such as Harvey Weinstein and mostly shut out the likes of Kevin Spacey (he might get work but he’ll never win a third Oscar), while Roseanne and Kanye West’s hateful musings have found them dropped from namesake sitcoms and multimillion dollar endorsements. But its waves can also have drastic side effects, as if one slip of the tongue or misconstrued message will be the end of your career. This seemed like it could have happened to Jamie Foxx after an Instagram post was read by some as antisemitic. One person who showed support for Foxx was Jennifer Aniston, who “liked” his post and found herself being tied to something that wasn’t there in the first place. Now, Aniston says she is straight up “over cancel culture.”

After her family and friends had a funeral, her cortège drove through the streets again. One of O’Connor’s favorite singer’s music, Bob Marley, was played from a vintage Volkswagen camper van that drove in front of a hearse. The two cars drove down the street as thousands of fans watched and paid their respects.
Some admirers waited hours for the cars and when the car arrived, they tossed flowers on top of the hearse.
The crowd applauded and sang her song “Nothing Compares 2 U.” The cars drove to her former home where fans left “Refugees Welcome,” Gay Pride and Black Lives Matter signs in front of it.

London, Aug 4 (Ians) Irish singer Sinead O’Connor’s body has been released to her relatives following an autopsy.
The music legend, famed for her powerful voice, died aged 56 on July 26 at her home in south-east London.
At the time, it was believed her death was not being treated as suspicious.
Later her body was taken for an autopsy in order to “secure a medical cause of death”, but a post-mortem examination report may not be received for “some weeks”, mirror.co.uk reported.
The London Inner South Coroner’s Court confirmed that they would make a decision as to whether they will open an inquest after the results of the autopsy are known and following submissions from her relatives.
John Thompson, clerk at the London Inner South district court, confirmed in a statement on behalf of senior coroner Andrew Harris that the conclusion of the autopsy will be publicly disclosed if an inquest is opened.
