The rules of engagement between U.S. studios and streamers and European producers are starting to change.
That was a key takeaway from the Locarno Film Festival’s StepIN think tank on the state of the indie film industry, where on Wednesday some 50 European and international invited industry players participated in a daylong event involving working sessions to exchange thoughts on practices and business models and propose new ideas and strategies.
“The old model that the global streamers used to apply of ‘all or nothing’ and wanting to own everything forever has really now developed into a much more flexible approach,” said Carlo Dusi, head of London-based Endor Productions, who was the notetaker of the round table on New Opportunities for Film Financing and Production, presenting his group’s conclusions.
They are now open “to look at ways in which to acquire or co-commission against multiple territories, taking licenses instead...

The End of a Boom? How the Pandemic is Shaping the Present and Future of International Co-Production
High-end international co-production, a growth area over the last few years, has seen a significant downturn during the pandemic, but how soon will it return?
Recent data from Ampere Analysis shows that two years ago, in the last quarter of 2018, a boom time for international drama, 8% of scripted commissions were co-productions, with 64 recorded during this period.
By the second quarter of 2020, as the pandemic took hold, this number plunged to 26 – with co-pros falling to account for just 5% of all scripted series.
While this drop off is inevitable, for many it’s a situation that’s not easily rectifiable, given the variables in legislation, quarantining and state-driven insurance measures from territory to territory.
Claire Mundell, managing director of Synchronicity Films, admits it would be much harder now to make her company’s four-part U.K./Australian co-production thriller “The Cry.”

Reciprocating an exchange which saw Series Mania 2019 Co-Pro Pitching winner “Capturing Big Mouth” participate at this year’s Berlin CoPro Series, German project “Transitniki” will make the return trip to Lille next month, having been selected by Series Mania representatives in Berlin.
From Germany’s Rohfilm Factory, “Transitniki” is set in 1985, behind the Iron Curtain, and tracks groups of thrill-seeking young East Germans, feeling trapped in their own country, who find a way to enter the Soviet Union illegally using transit visas. There, they are able to satiate their desires for travel and adventure in Russia’s untamed wilds.
The series is written by an experienced trio of TV screenwriters in Heide Schwochow, Constantin Lieb and Christian Mackrodt. There is no one creator, no showrunner and no head writer. In fact, when producer Karsten Stöter was putting his writers’ room together, some told him his democratic methodology for screenwriting would never work.

The goalposts have shifted for international production and distribution groups, says James Baker, president of Red Arrow Studios. “The old notion that size is everything is changing,” Baker, a former exec at Sky and Al Gore’s Current TV, tells Variety. “It’s now much more how flexible can you be to respond to a change in the market.”
Red Arrow Studios has 20 production companies in its stable as well as a sales arm, making it a sizable player but not the biggest beast. Baker is happy with that position. “Some of the much bigger groups made some really big swings and said, ‘We’ve got to have a massive L.A. office’ and ‘We have to spend a lot of money on A-list star vehicles’ – and that has proved to be tricky for some,” he says. “We’re at a size to be able to change and move in different directions pretty quickly.

Emily Mortimer is to reboot classic British series Rumpole of the Bailey – the legal drama originally created by her father John Mortimer.
The Newsroom and Mary Poppins Returns star is in the early stages of development with the remake, which will be produced by her own indie King Bee and eOne.
The series, which ran on ITV predecessor Thames Television between 1978 and 1992, starred Leo McKern as Horace Rumpole, an elderly barrister in London who defended a weird and wonderful mix of clients. It started as a radio play on the BBC before making the move to television.
The reboot was revealed at a Deadline-moderated Banff Connect event in London by Polly Williams, eOne’s head of scripted development in the UK. The Designated Survivor studio has a first-look deal with Mortimer’s company, which she runs with her husband Alessandro Nivola.

Anonymous Content has teamed up with Red Arrow Studios International and Air Force One producer Charlie Lyons to adapt Joanne Lipman’s book That’s What She Said: What Men Need to Know (and Women Need to Tell Them) about Working Together into a scripted TV series.
The global arm of the German commercial broadcaster ProSiebenSat.1 has optioned the rights to the book from the former USA Today editor. It combines anecdotes from Lipman’s own rise to the top of a male-dominated industry with data and research to offer real-world solutions for combating unconscious bias, sexual harassment, mansplaining, the gender wage gap, and other systemic problems people confront daily in professional environments.
The True Detective producer will co-produce with Red Arrow Studios International and Lyons with the latter exec producing alongside Paul Green, Paula Munoz Vega, Carlo Dusi and Bo Stehmeier. They are currently in discussions with writers to develop.

Little Ashes, which has been met with heavy anticipation from fans of its star Robert Pattinson (also star of The Twilight Saga: New Moon and How To Be), opens in theatres across the United States today. The film, which is expected to fare quite nicely this weekend, highlights a specific time in the life of Spanish surrealist artist Salvador Dali (played by Pattinson) in which he meets and becomes conflicted over his love for Federico Garcia Lorca (played by Javier Beltran). The film also stars Matthew McNulty and Marina Gatell ... Says director Paul Morrison about Little Ashes, “the good thing about [it] is that it doesn’t attempt to be a biopic. tMF Fast Forward: Paul Morrison's Little Ashes - tMF takes a closer look (Part 1 of a 4 part series)
Robert Pattinson was as friendly, approachable and fun to be around in our downtime as he was a true professional while on set, and his commitment to becoming Salvador Dali' was extremely impressive - and paid off in generating a performance which I personally think is extraordinary. Venice International Film Festival
VENICE, Italy -- There are said to be 51 mysteries in Dutch painter Rembrandt van Rijn's masterpiece "The Night Watch" and British writer and director Peter Greenaway sets out to explain all of them in his richly detailed but lumbering and theatrical drama "Nightwatching".
Most of the scenes are interiors with performers facing the camera with Martin Freeman portraying Rembrandt as a very talkative and lecherous 17th century English fashion photographer or film director. There's lots of male and female frontal nudity and a lexicon of filthy words as the artist expresses himself with his beloved wife and then two successive lovers.
It's doubtful that the film could be used in schools and the cloistered art history lesson, screened in competition at the Venice International Film Festival, is likely to fall on deaf ears anywhere beyond festivals and the occasional art house.
The 1642 painting was supposed to be the usual thing of the day featuring city bigwigs posing as the Amsterdam Musketeer Militia in a group portrait. But the artist discovered scurrilous things about the pompous merchants involving child prostitution and murder, and he used the painting to make a public accusation.
Greenaway takes plenty of time establishing the characters who will be involved in the painting although it's not always clear which is which. It is apparent that bad things are happening at an orphanage where a rich man named Rombout Kemp (Christopher Britton) and his acolytes use the young girls for sexual favors. One of them, Marieke (Nathalie Press), shows up on Rembrandt's roof one day claiming to be an angel but she's there to tell the sorry story of her sisters.
Meanwhile, there's a murder at a gathering of the merchants playing at being militia and Rembrandt becomes increasingly outraged at the cover-up. He determines to reveal all in his commissioned painting.
He is an unmade bed of a man who adores his doomed but fatalistic wife Saskia (Eva Birthistle) and grieves mightily when she dies. At hand, however, is a servant named Geertje (Jodhi May), whose vivid sensuality soon has him captivated, followed by the more sedate but equally responsive Hendrickje (Emily Holmes).
There are 34 people in the painting and all of them show up at Rembrandt's door to pose, beseech, complain or threaten. Each scene is presented as on a stage, even the exteriors, and the impact is claustrophobic. Birthistle, May and Holmes perform bravely and so does Freeman although his Rembrandt sounds a bit too much like someone from a British TV sitcom.

LONDON -- James Purefoy and Frances O'Connor are set to star in Poetic Unreason, a film about British war poet Robert Graves, producer Carlo Dusi said Thursday. Purefoy (Resident Evil) will play Graves, while O'Connor (About Adam) will co-star as Graves' American lover Laura Riding. William Nunez, who will direct and share producing credits, also wrote the screenplay. Budgeted at about £4.5 million ($7.5 million), the film is billed as a tale of sexual jealousy and obsession centering on the life of Graves, whose marriage is turned upside down by the arrival of writer Riding. British stage actress Lesley Manville -- most recently seen in Mike Leigh's All or Nothing theater adaptation -- will play Graves' wife. Derek Kavanagh and Dusi will produce along with Nunez under Dusi's banner, Aria Films.
