Penelope Featherington and Colin Bridgerton entering into a unique arrangement, J.Lo fighting evil artificial intelligence, the roasting of an NFL legend, a retelling of the invention of the Pop Tart, Brooke Shields and Benjamin Bratt at war and John Mulaney’s six-night live comedy event from Los Angeles are some of the big titles hitting Netflix in May.
Debuting on May 3 is Jerry Seinfeld’s directorial debut, Unfrosted. The comedy legend works both sides of the camera for this humorous feature take on the birth of the Pop Tart. The movie is set in 1963 as breakfast cereal giants Kellogg’s and Post compete to become the first company to create a morning pastry. Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan and Amy Schumer also star, with Hugh Grant more than likely to steal the whole film with a turn as Tony the Tiger.

There’s a nice trio of specialty films to highlight this weekend from Joanna Arnow, Uberto Pasolini and Caitlin Cronenberg’s feature directorial debut.
Joanna Arnow’s micro-budget comedy The Feeling That The Time For Doing Something Has Passed world premiered in Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight. It follows a thirtysomething New York woman as time passes in her long-term casual Bdsm relationship, low-level corporate job, and quarrelsome Jewish family. Arnow writes, directs and stars. And that’s Bdsm, as in bondage and discipline, dominance and submission, sadism and masochism.
The helmer is thrilled to see her feature (after 2017’s i hate myself :), and a handful of well-received shorts) launch a theatrical run, with Magnolia distributing. “That’s how I dream of my movies being seen,” Arnow tells Deadline. “It’s also so important to see comedies (on the big screen) Shared laughter with strangers is quite beautiful and healing in a way.

Sean Gunn is best known for portraying Kirk Gleason in Gilmore Girls. The role made him famous, and it’s the one fans most associate with Gunn. Still, it wasn’t his first Gilmore Girls job. Sean Gunn actually took on three different parts in the series. His first two roles occurred in the first few episodes. Then he officially became Stars Hollow’s town eccentric, Kirk Gleason.

“I’m beginning to wonder if you’re not destined for very great things, Nelly Jackson. I’m beginning to wonder if you’ve been sent to the planet for something special.” So Nell (Louisa Harland) is told midway through Disney+’s Renegade Nell, but by that point the prediction feels like a wild understatement. After all, it’s coming from Billy Blind (Nick Mohammed), the mysterious sprite who occasionally grants her otherworldly gifts of strength, speed and invulnerability. Surely the narrative gods never intended her to apply such strange talents to a humdrum life.
What that specific “something special” might be, however, proves more difficult to pin down. Nell accomplishes plenty over the adventure’s first season, such that this common nobody even gets tangled up in the struggle between Queen Anne (Jodhi May) and the Jacobite traitors who would overthrow her. But Renegade Nell never does deliver on...

The new Mean Girls is coming to physical media in the UK in April, on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray. More here.
Given that the original 2004 take on Mean Girls is coming to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in the UK shortly, it’s not the biggest surprise in the world that the 2024 take on the same story is also on its way.
Mean Girls 2024 – the version of the film that’s a musical but don’t tell anybody it’s a musical because that wouldn’t be on – was originally intended to be a Paramount+ straight to streaming film. Good test screening results saw it upgraded to a cinema release, and the resultant movie has grossed over $100m at the global box office.
Not bad at all for a definitely not a musical.

It looks like Matthew Vaughn’s ambitious plan for a superspy multiverse franchise is Doa, with his most ambitious film to date, Argylle, opening under expectations at the box office this weekend. According to Deadline’s stats, the film, which Apple acquired for a hefty $200 million, is set to open with a modest $16.5 million. This is a pretty disastrous opening for a would-be franchise movie. What makes it even worse is that the Cinemascore for the movie was a dire C+, meaning that word-of-mouth is pretty poor. Usually, an underperforming blockbuster would open in the B-range, suggesting a substantial day-to-day plummet for the film. It may come in well under Deadline’s estimates when all is said and done.
This opening aligns with the $15 million I predicted earlier this week. However, as one of the few critics who enjoyed it, I’m dismayed by its bad performance. One thing working...

The official trailer for The Exorcist: Believer debuted in theaters over the weekend, and if you’ve been waiting for it to appear online, you’ll be happy to know that today is the day.
You can watch the trailer for The Exorcist: Believer below, which gives us our first look at David Gordon Green’s vision for a decades-later sequel to the original horror classic.
Yes, The Exorcist: Believer is taking the Halloween 2018 approach, with Ellen Burstyn reprising her role from William Friedkin’s terrifying horror movie from the 1970s.

Exclusive: Line of Duty creator Jed Mercurio has penned an ITV drama about a doctor in the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic starring Joanne Froggatt.
Mercurio co-wrote Breathtaking with Rachel Clarke, the author of the 2021 novel that the show is based on, and Prasanna Puwanarajah, who played Martin Bashir in The Crown Season 5. All three are qualified doctors.
Filming wrapped quietly earlier this year in Belfast.
Breathtaking is based on Clarke’s unflinching memoir having looked after the most gravely unwell patients in the early days of the pandemic. Amid the tensions, fatigue and rising death toll, she witnessed the courage of patients and NHS staff alike in conditions of unprecedented adversity.
Golden Globe-winner Froggatt, who most recently starred in James Graham’s BBC drama Sherwood, played lead Dr Abbey Henderson and Craig Viveiros (The War of the Worlds) was director.

Ben Whishaw and Ambika Mod, the stars of This is Going to Hurt, have scooped the top acting prizes at this year’s Broadcasting Press Guild Awards, while Derry Girls picked up a double.
This is Going to Hurt failed to even land a nomination in Best Drama Series, with that gong going to fellow BBC drama Sherwood, but Whishaw and Mod staved off competition from the likes of Anna Maxwell Martin, Leslie Manville and Gary Oldman to take the major prizes.
Mod’s win will lead to more raised eyebrows at the BAFTA TV jury’s decision to eschew her from this week’s Best Actress nomination list in favor of the likes of Kate Winslet, Sarah Lancashire and Imelda Staunton. Whishaw picked up a BAFTA nod for Best Actor.

Gilmore Girls had several important plot points that drove the story forward. Lorelai Gilmore’s teen pregnancy was the thread that wove everything together. Lorelai’s pregnancy was mentioned countless times during the show’s seven-season run. While Emily Gilmore assured Rory Gilmore that she was never seen as a “mistake,” there were certainly a lot of hard feelings about the expectations Lorelai never fulfilled. So, what would Lorelai Gilmore’s life looked like if she hadn’t gotten pregnant? The show hinted at it multiple times.
If Lorelai Gilmore had never gotten pregnant, she probably would have gone to Vassar College
Lorelai’s teen pregnancy ended her academic career as she knew it, but Lorelai wasn’t a wayward teen who happened to get pregnant. Apparently, Lorelai was rather bright and had a ton of potential. Richard and Emily Gilmore expected Lorelai to leave her prep school and head on to Vassar College.

Before Raúl Cocolotl was a teenage trans boy helping Wendell & Wild‘s heroine Katherine “Kat” Koniqua Elliot save her town from demons, economic downturn and the prison industrial complex, he was simply what the stop-motion feature’s director Henry Selick calls a classic “goth loser kid.”

Lena Dunham has recalled the serious “level of threat” she experienced amid and after Girls.
Following the filming of the penultimate fifth season of her HBO comedy, the 36-year-old actor campaigned for Hillary Clinton during the 2016 election.
“It was such a strange political time with the shift from this Democratic moment to rampant conservatism, so I felt like I needed to be vocal politically. But there’s a lot of challenges that come with that,” Dunham said in a recent interview with Vanity Fair.
As a result of her feminist views, she says that the far-right news site Breitbart News and its followers demonised her, and added that she had to have security guards present while she attended public events.
“The level of threat on the internet, you assume it’s not real. And you don’t want to take it seriously,” she continued. “But I had someone send me...
