Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) issued a pardon to Daniel Perry, the former United States Army sergeant who had fatally shot an armed demonstrator during a Black Lives Matter protest in 2020.
He was held in state prison on a 25-year sentence since being convicted of murdering Garrett Foster, an Air Force veteran who lawfully carried an Ak-47 while marching in a Black Lives Matter protest, by an Austin jury back in April 2023.
The former U.S. Army sergeant was working as a ride-share driver back in July 2020 when he turned his car onto a street in Austin filled with demonstrators and shot Foster before he drove off.
Perry served in the Army for over a decade. During the time of the shooting, he had been stationed at Fort Cavazos, then Fort Hood, which is about 70 miles north of Austin.

Missed Monday’s late-night monologues? We’ve got you covered with our round-up of the night’s best laughs from across the dial.
Chide and Seek
Former New York Governor, former Donald Trump lawyer, and current guy who owes $150 million to election workers he defamed Rudy Giuliani celebrated his 80th birthday this weekend. It was a typical Maga party, complete with seditious pals like Roger Stone and Steve Bannon, a Sinatra cover band, and presumably all the booze in the world. Oh, and several process servers who, alerted by Giuliani gloating on social media about how successfully he’s been dodging subpoenas for trying to subvert democracy (in Arizona this time), waited until “Happy Birthday” was sung to put the legal documents in Rudy’s baffled hands.
Hubris, thy name, this week anyway, is Rudy. Such a massive self-own was irresistible to late-night, with Jimmy Kimmel opening with a pithily gleeful,...

The 49th season finale of “Saturday Night Live” opened with James Austin Johnson as Donald Trump speaking at the barricades of a Manhattan courthouse, in a nod to Trump’s ongoing legal woes amid his presidential campaign.
During the sketch, Johnson as Trump spoke about his “weird and depressing” state at the courthouse, saying, “I don’t like being in court because they say very mean things about me as I’m trying to sleep.” (It was reported that Trump fell asleep in court during proceedings.) He goes on to say, “Now that my defense is supposed to begin on Monday, I would love to testify; I’m not afraid to testify at all, I’m just not going to out of fear.”
He continues to say how he doesn’t want to go back to the White House, “But it appears people want to send me there.” Johnson’s...

Republican South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem’s new book is facing yet another controversy over her claim that she canceled a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron after his comments about the Israel-Hamas war. The French government has now officially denied she was ever offered such a meeting.
For weeks, Noem’s memoir No Going Back has been criticized after a story that she shot her family dog in it was revealed.
The governor also said she met North Korean leader Kim Jong Un but had to retract that story when fact-checkers proved it was not true.
According to Noem’s book, “While in Paris, I was slated to meet with French President Emmanuel Macron. However, the day before we were to meet he made what I considered a very pro-Hamas and anti-Israel comment to the press. So, I decided to cancel.”

Glen Powell’s journey to superstardom began in a creative writing class at Austin’s Westwood High School. He was the only one of the kids who was trying his hand at writing screenplays.
“My teacher, Dr. [F.J.] Schaak was like, ‘Hey, you love writing screenplays. There is no better guy than Richard Linklater. Study all of his movies,'” the actor told IndieWire.
Through Schaak, Powell, who’d already been pursuing acting — his name is still written on the dressing room wall of Austin’s Paramount Theatre, where he performed in “The Sound of Music” as a teenager — met Linklater as well. And Linklater’s longtime editor Sandra Adair spoke to his class.
“I remember watching ‘Waking Life’ in his class, and obviously ‘Dazed,'” Powell said. “And we were sitting there going, ‘Man, this guy can do ‘Before Sunset,’ all these things,’ and we were just like, ‘This guy can kind of do anything,...

The inaugural San Quentin Film Festival — the first film festival to be held inside a prison — will take place Oct. 10, 2024 at the maximum security correctional facility located near San Francisco.
The one-day event, designed to spark collaboration between incarcerated people and the entertainment industry, will include a screening of A24’s Sing Sing, which stars Colman Domingo and a cast of formerly incarcerated actors. The festival will include both new feature films that depict the prison experience and short films made by incarcerated filmmakers.
While he was incarcerated at San Quentin, festival co-director Rahsaan Thomas directed a short documentary, Friendly Signs, which screened at this year’s Atlanta Film Festival. “I learned to become a filmmaker while I was incarcerated, using donated equipment,” said Thomas, who is co-host and producer of the award-winning Ear Hustle podcast. “My experience happened through opportunities that rarely come to incarcerated people. Republican South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem has been forbidden to enter 20% of her state after being banned from two more Native American tribes in the past week.
In early February, the Oglala Sioux tribe banned Noem from the Pine Ridge Reservation after she said she wanted to send razor wire and security personnel to Texas to help keep migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border. She also mentioned that cartels had been infiltrating this state’s reservations.
The tribe’s president, Frank Star Comes Out, responded negatively to the GOP South Dakota governor’s remarks in a statement addressed to her.
Noem replied to Star Comes Out, saying she had better results working with the Trump administration.
In response to her remarks connecting tribal leaders to Mexican drug cartels, three more tribes banned Noem – the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, the Rosebud Sioux Tribe and the Cheyenne River Sioux tribe.

Updated: House Speaker Mike Johnson is the latest figure to lend his support to Donald Trump and his claim that the New York hush money trial is a “sham.”
Johnson was in the background as Trump made his regular morning statement to the press in the hallway just outside the courtroom, and the speaker nodded at the former president as he made his way in.
Also joining Trump were other supporters, including Vivek Ramaswamy, Rep. Byron Donalds (R-fl) and North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum. Ramaswamy and Burgum are among a number of vice presidential contenders to visit the courthouse to show their fealty to Trump, on trial for allegedly falsifying business records to cover up a hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels.

Seth Meyers has been an annual tradition at NBCUniversal’s Upfronts. Much like Jimmy Kimmel at the Disney event, Meyers loves to roast the television industry and his own employer.
This year was no different, taking shots at NBC, Peacock, Dick Wolf, Bravo star Tom Sandoval, and former ad chief Linda Yaccarino in a five-minute bit.
Check out the jokes below:
“Welcome to the NBCU Upfront. If you’re looking for the Fox News upfront, that’s happening outside a lower Manhattan courtroom.”
“What a joy to be back in Radio City; I asked an NBC executive ‘Why do you hole up here every year?’ and they said ‘I like looking at the marquee and thinking, sure, it’s a tricky time for TV, but it could be worse, we could be in radio’.”

At the NBCUniversal upfronts, they saved the best for almost last: “Late Night With Seth Meyers” host Seth Meyers hit the Radio City Music Hall stage to throw out a few quips before introducing NBCUniversal ad sales chief Mark Marshall.
Meyers came out swinging: “Hello and welcome to the NBC upfronts. If you’re looking for the Fox News upfronts, that’s happening outside a lower Manhattan courtroom,” he said to chuckles.
He then took aim at the broadcast industry: “What a joy to be back in Radio City Music Hall. The uncertain fate of Paramount Global was ripe for comment: “Also, not to brag — a very good day for me.

I had no idea what to expect from a documentary with a title like The Guardian of the Monarch. I certainly didn’t expect it to be about monarch butterflies and a man who would do anything to save this beautiful species of insect. And this is a pretty heavy documentary to take on. A lot happens here, and within the span of ninety minutes, director Emiliano Ruprah gives you a lot of information without losing grip on the narrative. Let’s take a closer look.
What Happens in the Documentary?
In the Mexican state of Michoacan, there’s this huge butterfly sanctuary run by a local man, Homero Gomez. Environmentalist Homero has given his whole life to saving this particular species of butterfly, creating an environment suitable for them, and helping the insects during their migration from the north to the south. In the Season 1 finale of Max’s “Girls on the Bus,” Sadie (Melissa Benoist) has a tense conversation with Governor Walker (Hettienne Park) that had been building all season. And that’s hardly all.
Walker is a pretty obvious stand-in for Hillary Clinton in the show’s version of a Democratic presidential primary. In Episode 10, written by co-creator Amy Chozick, Walker has just learned that, despite being the most experienced and likely best person for the job, she was going to fall short of getting the necessary delegates to clench the nomination for president. Political journo Sadie comes to speak to Gov. Walker while she’s drowning her sorrows on a campaign bus, and apologizes for how her coverage of her has hurt her over the years — but also lay out her own frustrations about the enigma that is the governor.

“I’m fed up,” Scott said Thursday. “I watched what happened to me and my company. I’ve talked to businesspeople over the years [about] what’s happened to them, when you have political persecution. And now what I’ve watched with [former] President Trump with all these cases. This is...

Exclusive: Abramorama announced they have acquired the rights to North American theatrical distribution of veteran political documentarian Aj Schnack’s latest film Majority Rules, which captures a history-making period during which Alaska became the first state in the nation to implement new election reforms that promise to put voters back at the forefront of elections and governing.
In Majority Rules, Schnack, who is known for his nonpartisan documentaries that delve into American electoral politics, including Convention, Caucus and Midterms, follows Alaska as it is set to implement two novel election reforms: the elimination of traditional party primaries and the ability for voters to rank candidates based on preferences. When the state’s longest-serving Congressman dies unexpectedly leaving an open seat, it prompts a special election to put this system to the test months earlier than anticipated. As dozens of candidates, including former Governor Sarah Palin, vie for the highly coveted seat,...

South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem embarked this week on one of the more tumultuous book tours in recent memory, as she was peppered with questions about an anecdote about killing her dog Cricket, and another story about meeting North Korean leader Kim Jung Un. Major doubts were raised that the latter story was true.
As she sought to promote No Going Back, she was peppered with questions in interviews with mainstream outlets like Face the Nation and NewsNation, but some of the most contentious Q&a have been with those on the right, like Fox Business’ Stuart Varney and Newsmax. The book was an obvious was of getting attention as Donald Trump considers potential running mates, but Rob Finnerty of Newsmax went so far as to tell her, directly, “I don’t even think you’re on the list.”

As Gov. Phil Murphy continues his push to woo film and television production to New Jersey, the state economic development authority today approved a partnership with a $1+ billion studio complex including 23 sound stages set to rise in the Bergen Point neighborhood of Bayonne, New Jersey at the site of a former Texaco oil refinery.
The project will break ground this fall, said Arpad Busson, the New York-based French financier whose Togus Urban Renewal is spearheading the project along with Rothschild in the UK and New York-based Moore Group. He said construction will take two years. Called 1888 Studios, after the year New Jersey-native Thomas Edison filed a patent for the motion picture camera, the 1.5 million square feet structure designed by architecture firm Gensler will look to evoke imagery of Golden Age Hollywood, spanning 55 acres and including comprehensive on-site production services, security, and a waterfront park and promenade accessible to the public.

The dispute between TikTok and the United States government is headed to the courts (again). After challenging state-level laws that sought to limit TikTok’s U.S. availability, the app is preparing to mount a legal offensive against the new federal law that attempts to force either a TikTok divestiture or a Stateside ban.
TikTok and parent company ByteDance have officially filed federal lawsuits that will contest the legality of the Protecting Americans From Foreign Adversaries Act, as the newly-signed law is known. These legal actions have raised several issues related to the law; for starters, TikTok is arguing that the “obviously unconstitutional” regulation restricts Americans’ right to expression and unfairly targets one specific entity.
“Congress has taken the unprecedented step of expressly singling out and banning TikTok: a vibrant online forum for protected speech and expression used by 170 million Americans to create, share, and view videos over the Internet,...

Dua Lipa knows how to bring the party. And apparently it runs in the genes. While making her “Saturday Night Live” hosting debut last night, the award-winning pop star acknowledged how she’d made her television debut in the same building eight years ago and gave a special shoutout to her parents — who were in the audience cheering her on — telling a story about an unlikely run-in she had with her folks one night.
“As you can see,” she said, “they’re kind of cool. They love to party. One night, I was out with my friends and we ended up at the club at three o’clock in the morning and who do I bump into but my parents. Which is embarrassing, cause the last thing you want to see when you’re super high and drunk-off-your-ass is your daughter.”
The punchline got a huge laugh, particularly from her parents up in the balcony.

A half-century ago when George Lucas decided to make “Star Wars,” a core visual effects team was handed a sizable challenge: Figure out a believable way to transport audiences to a galaxy far, far away. Essential to that goal was the development of a new type of motion control camera system: built in a Van Nuys warehouse where the production filmed space-set scenes such as the climatic trench run.
Now fans in Southern California can see the historic Dykstraflex camera system, newly restored and in working order, on display at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures starting Saturday in recognition of May the 4th, aka Star Wars day. The system weighs 1,500 lbs. and will be demonstrated by VFX vets with a 14-foot track and studio scale replicas of the Millennium Falcon, which is five-feet long, and a 20-inch X-Wing fighter.

Facing criticism from California’s political leaders, school faculty and students, UCLA’s chancellor is placing blame for the upheaval that overtook the university’s campus this week on “instigators” and “outside agitators” whose “terrifying” violent acts ultimately ended the weeks of pro-Palestine protests with the removal of an encampment by police and hundreds of arrests on campus.
The arrests of pro-Palestine protesters on Thursday at UCLA, which is estimated at over 200, came after officers in riot gear descended on the campus to dismantle the encampment erected on April 25 by the Uc Divest Coalition and Students for Justice in Palestine at UCLA. Flares blasted over UCLA’s Dickson Plaza as demonstrators sprayed fire extinguishers at police in an attempt to fend off their removal by force. Stephen Colbert isn’t laying off when it comes to Kristi Noem, the U.S. governor and vice president hopeful who’s currently under fire for shooting one of her dogs and a goat. However, the CBS host is at least going to pretend to be conflicted about it.
“We here at team ‘Late Show’ have been following the tragic career suicide of South Dakota governor and Talbots mannequin you swear just blinked, Kristi Noem,” Colbert said Thursday night. Noem’s name earned a chorus of boos from the in-studio audience. “I’ll be honest, I was conflicted about whether or not I should keep talking about it because, unlike Kristi Noem, I don’t like beating a dead horse.”
Colbert then played a clip of Noem on Fox News clarifying that the dog wasn’t a puppy, but a “working dog.”
“That’s right, an important distinction. It was a working dog.

Kristi Noem has repeatedly affirmed that yes, she actually did murder her 14-month-old dog — but that doesn’t mean the South Dakota governor’s upcoming memoir, No Going Back, isn’t full of easily disprovable lies.
According to The Dakota Scout, which obtained a copy of the book, Noem claims that as a member of Congress, she met with elusive North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un.
“Through my tenure on the House Armed Services Committee I had the chance to travel to many countries to meet with world leaders,” Noem wrote.

The Rolling Stones invited Irma Thomas onstage to perform “Time is on My Side” together during their headlining set at New Orleans Jazz Fest on Thursday night.
Originally written by Jerry Ragavoy in 1963 and first recorded by trombonist Kai Winding, “Time is on My Side” was subsequently covered by Irma Thomas and then The Rolling Stones in 1964. It became a hit for both parties, and an early one at that for The Rolling Stones, who were just beginning to build a significant following. Their rendition at Jazz Fest last night was the first time they’d performed the track since 1998.

Arizona has officially repealed an 1864 abortion ban that the state Supreme Court revived last month.
Democratic Gov. Donald Trump continues to claim that Americans are positively over the moon about the destruction of reproductive rights — but he couldn’t be more wrong.

“Basically the states decide on abortion, and people are absolutely thrilled with the way that’s going on,” Trump told a crowd of supporters.

A Monday afternoon FaceTime with Sandra Lee quickly turns into a shopping intervention. Anybody who wants to lower their grocery bill, says the Semi-Homemade Cooking host, needs a Costco membership and an affinity for Trader Joe’s. When I counter that the crowds at the latter are a real turn-off, she’s having none of it. “You just have to get up early and go when they open,” she instructs. “Same with Costco.”
We are speaking on the occasion of her new series, Roku’s Dinner Budget Showdown (out May 3). It’s her first fully fledged TV show since Sandra’s Money Saving Meals ended in 2012 when Lee turned her attention to working alongside then-partner and then-Governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo. But this return for Lee, long an evangelist of stretching a dollar in the kitchen, seemed inevitable. Recent headlines about skyrocketing grocery costs are like the Bat-Signal for Lee.
