Marvel had a rough year in 2023. Many of its properties underperformed, and they lost their big villain due to Jonathan Majors being fired. Looking forward to their upcoming slate, comic fans have been excited about some of the studio’s projects over the next few years. Will these films help Marvel regain control? The upcoming Thunderbolts film has been one that fanboys have been hoping to see since the MCU started. With some recent news about the property coming up, it seems like the right time to break down what we know about the production.

Louis Leterrier's "The Incredible Hulk" was released in August of 2008, a year before Disney made their notorious $4 billion purchase of Marvel Entertainment. Once the Disney purchase was finalized, the company announced its plan to build out the then-new Marvel Cinematic Universe, which was novel at the time. Disney also retconned Paramount's "Iron Man," and Leterrier's movie (made for Universal) into the MCU, using a foundation that had already been built. The announcement of a whole string of interconnected superhero movies set the pop world on fire, and the ensuing decade would be crushed -- both positively and negatively -- by Marvel.

Headlined by Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova and Harrison Ford as Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross, the film will also feature Marvel alum Sebastian Stan reprising his role as Bucky Barnes along with other regular Marvel cameos.
Harrison Ford is officially a Marvel star
The popular narrative based on a group of anti-heroes is already gaining hype for its ensemble cast and the plotline. While Ford’s inclusion as the leader of the pack excited Marvel fans a great deal, an inside source recently revealed that Thaddeus Ross almost did not make it into the film. Marvel buffs felt that this would have been a disaster.

Superhero movies are ubiquitous at this point, and the biggest name in the game is Marvel. Not just any Marvel, mind you, but Marvel Studios. Starting with 2008’s “Iron Man,” Marvel Studios and its now-president Kevin Feige started experimenting with the idea of telling one long, interconnected story over multiple movies with different lead characters, crossing over from time to time – just like in the comics. That experiment proved successful with 2012’s “The Avengers,” and it’s been hit after hit ever since.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to grow, even in the wake of the conclusive nature of 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame,” and it can be hard to keep track of what’s coming down the pike. Below, we’ve assembled a list of every confirmed MCU movie currently in the works, when it’s coming out, who’s in it, and what we know about each project so far.

Marvel Studios‘ upcoming film ‘Thunderbolts‘ is getting a fresh touch on its script. Joanna Calo, known for her work on shows like ‘The Bear’ and ‘Beef,’ is stepping in to rework the screenplay. This news comes from the popular source @rDCEUleaks.
‘Thunderbolts’ is set to be a significant addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), marking it as the thirty-sixth film and part of Phase Five. It’s a sequel to several MCU projects, including ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp,’ ‘The Falcon and The Winter Soldier,’ ‘Black Widow,’ and ‘Captain America: Brave New World.’ Originally scheduled for a July 2024 release, the film is now expected to hit theaters on December 20, 2024.
The film’s cast includes a blend of familiar and new faces. Sebastian Stan returns as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, alongside Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova. Wyatt Russell will appear as John Walker/U.S. Agent, with Olga Kurylenko reprising her role as Antonia Dreykov/Taskmaster.

“The Incredible Hulk” director Louis Leterrier was the first guest on the new “Happy Sad Confused” spinoff series “Watchalong” and he got frank while discussing his 2008 comic book movie. The film, which starred Edward Norton as Bruce Banner and the Hulk, was the second movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but its critical and commercial reception nosedived compared to “Iron Man,” which opened a month before. “The Incredible Hulk” only grossed $264 million worldwide, a sharp decline from “Iron Man’s” $585 million.
It’s well known by now that Marvel scrapped all the follow-up plans it had for Norton continuing as Hulk. He was later replaced by Mark Ruffalo. Norton clashed with Marvel during the making of the film, with Leterrier saying that the movie’s tone was perhaps the biggest point of contention.
“The whole way, everybody was in lock step. It just got tense at the end,” the director remembered.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is currently in its Multiversal phase, and the upcoming projects promise a plethora of exciting content. A noteworthy aspect of these upcoming endeavors is the increased emphasis on various superhero teams. While fans have predominantly followed the Avengers’ adventures, a shift is imminent with the inclusion of X-Men, Fantastic Four, Thunderbolts, and Midnight Sons, all either confirmed or rumored in the MCU.
Leaked information from sources like MyTimeToShine and previously DanielPRK suggests that Marvel Studios initially intended to introduce another superhero team called the Daughters of Liberty. A project dedicated to an all-female superhero team was in the works, but strikes disrupted the development schedule, casting uncertainty over several projects.

MCU is currently in its Multiversal phase, and judging by the slate of upcoming projects, there is a lot of content to be excited about. One peculiar thing about upcoming projects is the fact that a great emphasis will be put on various teams. So far, fans have primarily been following the adventures of Avengers, but this is about to change since X-Men, Fantastic Four, Thunderbolts, and Midnight Sons are all either confirmed or rumored to be included in the MCU.
According to the MyTimeToShine leaker, and previously DanielPRK, Marvel Studios planned to include one more superhero team into the MCU under the name Daughters of Liberty. A project focusing on an all-female superhero team was planned before the strikes uprooted the entire development schedule and put many other projects under question.

It’s August 2023, and at this moment, the Marvel Cinematic Universe already released three projects this year, and there are three more to go. The franchise’s Phase 5 opened up with ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,’ in February, and since then, we also watched ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ in theaters (now streaming on Disney+) and the ‘Secret Invasion’ series on Disney+.
While the third and final installment of the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ trilogy received acclaim from fans, ‘Quantumania’ and ‘Secret Invasion’ weren’t that fortunate, and it only remains to be seen how will the rest of this year’s MCU projects, ‘The Marvels,’ ‘Loki’ Season 2, and ‘Echo’ will do. But also, some fans are already looking forward to 2024, although that release schedule is currently on thin glass due to the ongoing strikes in Hollywood.

If there’s one thing that the MCU has taught us about Nick Fury, it’s that he’s pretty damned good on his own, but when he gets a team together who work towards his cause, whether it be Skrulls, Shield agents, or Avengers, he’s a lot better. Secret Invasion has compounded this theme throughout, revealing that some of Nick’s greatest achievements would never have happened without his worker bees. And in its fifth episode, “Harvest”, Nick’s new team begins forming in order to help him deal with the Gravik situation, even as he maintains he’s the only one who can really resolve the conflict and clean up the mess he made.

Anthony Mackie revealed the new title for Captain America: Brave New Order with an Instagram post last month, but that wasn’t the most interesting part of the post. The photo featured Anthony Mackie in costume talking to Harrison Ford behind the scenes, but fans were quick to note that Ford’s pants were ripped, seemingly confirming that his character will transform into Red Hulk.
This little detail likely wasn’t meant to escape through Marvel’s notoriously tight security, but Anthony Mackie told ComicBook.com the real reason behind Harrison Ford’s ripped pants. “See, Harrison [Ford] and I go way back. A lot of people don’t know this,” Mackie said. “This is our second time working together. “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” will be the last time Harrison Ford dons a fedora and bullwhip to play the iconic adventurer, but fans will still have plenty of opportunities to see him on the big screen.
The actor is diving straight into another blockbuster Disney franchise by joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, the role previously played by the late William Hurt. Ford will make his debut as the character in next summer’s “Captain America: Brave New World” before suiting up again in “Thunderbolts” next December.
Few Hollywood projects are bigger than a Marvel movie, but even Ford’s superhero co-stars found themselves intimidated by his movie star gravitas. In an interview with Inverse, Anthony Mackie recalled his nerves about working with Ford and the fittingly nonchalant way that the “Star Wars” legend put him at ease.

Los Angeles, March 28 (Ians) Hollywood actress Liv Tyler is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, 16 years after her last appearance.
She will appear in 2024’s ‘Captain America: New World Order’ reprising her role from 2008’s ‘The Incredible Hulk’ as scientist Betty Ross, the daughter of General Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross, reports ‘Variety’.
That role was originated by the late William Hurt, who reappeared several times for Marvel Studios, starting with 2016’s ‘Captain America: Civil War’, in which Ross had become Secretary of State. Harrison Ford is stepping into the role of Thaddeus Ross for ‘New World Order’, in which the character has become President of the United States.
‘Variety’ further states that in ‘The Incredible Hulk’, Tyler’s Betty Ross was the love interest for Edward Norton’s Bruce Banner; after Norton was replaced by Mark Ruffalo, Tyler’s character was mentioned in passing, but the actor had not returned in the role.

Liv Tyler is set to rejoin the Marvel Cinematic Universe 15 years after starring in Louis Leterrier's "The Incredible Hulk," according to The Hollywood Reporter. The "Lord of the Rings" star isn't pulling double duty with a new character, but will actually be reprising her role as scientist Betty Ross in the upcoming film "Captain America: New World Order," per the outlet.
The inclusion of Tyler's Betty all but officially brings the once-neglected 2008 Hulk film back into Marvel canon, as she joins Tim Roth's Abomination on the list of characters from the film who have made a comeback despite the fact that the film featured an entirely different actor playing Bruce Banner.

It’s no secret that the MCU has been the biggest Hollywood juggernaut over the last 15 years, consisting of more than 31 films and raking in a record $28.6 billion worldwide. The franchise is beloved by millions and the collective universe that Marvel has built is one of the most creative adaptions of comic-book history that that the world will ever see. Regardless of whether or not somebody might be a fan of the movies, it can’t be denied how massive and influential the MCU has become.
Unfortunately, nothing is without its fault, and the MCU is no exception to that rule. Even in the early years prior to the Avengers ever assembling, there were projects that didn’t quite live up to audience expectations. Since the end of his run on The Walking Dead, Steven Yeun has thrown himself into all sorts of projects, including Nope and Minari, which earned him a Best Actor Oscar nomination. We suppose it was only a matter of time before the mighty casting maw of Marvel came to call, and Deadline reports that Yeun is joining the ensemble of Thunderbolts.
No-one will be surprised to learn that Yeun's role is being key quiet, though the site's report mentions that not only is he significant in this film but appears likely to recur in the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Thunderbolts, which has Jake Schreier directing and Black Widow's Eric Pearson on script duty, will follow a team of not-quite heroes gathered by Julia Louis-Dreyfus' Valentina Allegra de Fontaine to carry out secret missions, with some fresh-faced kid called (checks notes) Harrison Ford also aboard as Thaddeus Ross.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige spoke with Entertainment Weekly about all things Marvel earlier today, and while talking about Captain America: New World Order, he mentioned that Ross will be the President of the United States in the movie.
“This is certainly a big part for Thaddeus Ross,” Kevin Feige said. “He’s the president of the United States in the film. And with Harrison, you think about Air Force One, and you think about some of his confrontations with the president in Clear and Present Danger. There’s a dynamic between President Ross and Sam Wilson. They have a history together, but in this film, we’ll be seeing the dynamic between Captain America and the president of the United States in a way that is just incredible.

While Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige usually prefers to stay schtum about future developments for the MCU, the release of a new movie often finds him opening up a little to drop teasing hints about projects in the works. The impending arrival of Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania is just such an occasion, and Feige talked to Entertainment Weekly about a variety of subjects, including future plans for Spider-Man, The Marvels and more…
On the subject of Spider-Man, he was relatively cautious, since the company has yet to reveal any plans for more movies. But at least one is in the works, according to Feige. "All I will say is that we have the story. We have big ideas for that, and our writers are just putting pen to paper now."
Also arriving this year is The Marvels, the Nia DaCosta-directed sequel to Captain Marvel, which will see Brie Larson...

Deadline confirmed the news last October that Harrison Ford would be taking over the role of General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross — previously played by the late, great William Hurt — beginning with Phase 5 title Captain America: New World Order. At the time, details about the character and the film’s plot were being kept tightly under wraps.
But in a new interview with EW published today, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige confirmed that, in New World Order, Ross has become president of the United States. It’s familiar territory for Ford, who famously played a combat-trained Commander in Chief in Wolfgang Petersen’s 1997 actioner Air Force One.
Feige:

Fans of Tom Holland’s Peter Parker/Spider-Man are getting good news from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, who confirmed in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly that Holland’s fourth “Spider-Man” movie is now being written. Marvel had one of its biggest hits ever with Holland’s third-outing, “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” which became the first pandemic release to gross over 1 billion worldwide.
“All I will say is that we have the story,” Feige said about Holland’s anticipated “Spider-Man” return. “We have big ideas for that, and our writers are just putting pen to paper now.”
Whether Holland will once again team up with “Spider-Man” actors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield remains to be seen. Both actors have expressed interest in returning for a new “Spider-Man” movie.
Feige also confirmed to EW that “Deadpool 3” will be the first R-rated movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Harrison Ford is a part of some of the biggest film franchises on the planet, including "Star Wars," "Indiana Jones," and "Blade Runner." But for a long time, it looked like he was never going to cross over into the costumed superhero world of DC Comics or the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Somehow, however, the stars aligned and Marvel announced that Ford would be taking over the role of General "Thunderbolt" Ross from the late John Hurt in the upcoming "Captain America: New World Order." This is extremely exciting news for the fans, but some folks might be curious as to why Ford decided to join the world of caped superheroes at this stage in his career. After all, the esteemed actor is 80 years old, and no one would blame him if he just wanted to kick up his feet and retire.
