Ryan Murphy can’t be stopped. The prolific producer took to Instagram to drop a teaser for Grotesquerie, a new horror drama series starring Niecy Nash-Betts.

The Grotesquerie teaser offers no visuals, just the voice of Nash-Betts. “I don’t know when it started. I can’t put my finger on it. But it’s different now. There’s been a shift. It’s like something’s opening up in the world — a kind of hole to the center of nothingness,” Nash-Betts’ character says in the teaser. “What I saw today — they sent shrinks for everyone who worked this crime scene. You think, ‘Well hon, evil has always existed,’ and cite some statistic about how the world’s getting better, less murder, more help, less global horror, never been a better time to be alive, honey. Come back.

Black women are consistently underestimated, disregarded, and overlooked in the entertainment industry, but I've been so inspired by Black stars' joy and self-love this awards season. From Quinta Brunson to Niecy Nash, our favorite actresses have already celebrated their well-deserved flowers - and I'll be watching the upcoming Grammys to see if that trend continues.
If you've missed all the bright points of this awards season, let me remind you of what's happened so far. During the Golden Globes on Jan. 7, we saw Ayo Edebiri take home her first major award as this year's best female actor in a television series for her work in "The Bear." Her acceptance speech made its way around social media for her relatable delivery - but mainly for her acknowledgment of her agents' and managers' assistants. Despite this being a momentous occasion in her career, she took the time to humbly thank and uplift...

It was a big night for diversity at the 2023 Emmys with five of the 12 acting Emmys being awarded to performers of color, tying the record set at the 1991 ceremony.

Tears were flowing Monday night during the 75th Emmys ceremony as several winners, including Niecy Nash-Betts, gave their acceptance speeches.
Some thanked their children, others their wives and at one least one winner boldly — and fabulously — thanked herself.

Delayed by the WGA and SAG strikes in the early spring and summer of 2023, the 75th Emmy Awards already had anticipation backing attention toward the ceremony, but the casts of “The Bear,” “Succession” and more delivered rousing acceptance speeches, crossover interactions and honest emotional moments that solidified the ceremony as a great watch.
From surprise appearances like that of “Dead to Me” star Christina Applegate to reunions between the casts of “Cheers,” “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” and some of the “Grey’s Anatomy” stars, most of the awards presentations were teed up by star power making way for the winners.
Here are the best moments of the 75th Emmy Awards:

The “Dead to Me Actress” presented the first award of the night for Best Supporting Actress in a comedy series. Her appearance on the stage at the Peacock Theater led to a standing ovation that brought Applegate to tears.

Was it because of the spirit of Martin Luther King Jr., or simply a sign of the times, that the 2023 Emmys was its most diverse ever?
As the awards show celebrated its 75th anniversary, five of the 12 acting Emmys handed out on Monday night — pushed four months to MLK Day as a result of the 2023 strikes — went to performers of color, tying the record set at the 1991 ceremony, when Lynn Whitfield, Madge Sinclair and Ruby Dee took home statuettes (and James Earl Jones took home two).

Four months late and coming off the heels of two strikes, an awkward Golden Globes and the Critics Choice Awards, there perhaps weren’t many expectations leading into the 75th Primetime Emmys. When actor Anthony Anderson was announced as the host, it seemed like a safe albeit humdrum choice — until news of past sexual assault allegations against the actor began to resurface and go viral, and what had seemed tame became something more unsettling. Yet despite the Anderson controversy, the Television Academy surprised viewers and attendees by delivering a delightful Emmys, honoring classic TV and its legends, while celebrating the shows we love and revere now.
Anderson opened the Emmys with a clever spoof of “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” and honored several shows and their iconic theme songs — practically a lost art in television today. The “Black-ish” and “Law & Order” alum hit the nail on the head in a pleasingly...

Two years ago, the hashtag #EmmysSoWhite began trending when the Television Academy failed to award any major acting trophies to people of color. The pendulum has swung, with this year’s ceremony awarding a record-breaking number of people of color across all major categories: drama, comedy, limited, reality and variety series — a first in the TV Academy’s history.
That said, there were some stark reminders of historical shortcomings throughout the evening, such as a “Martin” cast reunion. The beloved show failed to score a single Emmy nod during its five-season run.
One year after making history as the second Black woman to win for comedy writing, Quinta Brunson took the stage again for her performance as the lovable teacher Janine Teagues in “Abbott Elementary.” She became the second Black woman to win the category, following Isabel Sanford for “The Jeffersons” in 1981.

Host Anthony Anderson kicked off the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards on Jan. 15 — with the comedic support of his mom, Doris Hancox — crowning the best TV of the 2022–2023 season. Netflix earned nominations across 34 titles, and won a total of 22 awards, including big sweeps for Queer Eye and Beef. In fact, the Fab 5 hold the record for the most Outstanding Structured Program Emmys with their sixth consecutive win. After winning three Golden Globes, Beef continued to sweep the awards circuit, nabbing awards for eight of its 13 Emmy nominations. And it was another big night for Ali Wong, who became the first woman of Asian descent to win an Emmy in a lead actress race.

The 53-year-old actress won her first Emmy for best supporting actress in a limited series for her work in Netflix’s Dahmer at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards on Monday (January 15) at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
In her acceptance speech, she powerfully called out Black women who have been victims of police violence and gone unheard.
“I accept this award on behalf of every Black and brown woman who has gone unheard, yet overpoliced, like Glenda Cleveland, like Sandra Bland, like Breonna Taylor. As an artist, my job is to speak truth to power. And, baby, I’ma do it ‘til the day I die. Mama, I won!” she said.

Niecy Nash-Betts took home her first Primetime Emmy Award on Monday, and the five-time nominee took the opportunity to celebrate herself for the milestone achievement. Up top, the actress thanked God for “this divine moment;” then Murphy, Netflix, the Academy voters and her wife, Jessica Betts. But then, it was time for some self-love.
“And you know who I want to thank? I want to thank me for believing in me and doing what they said I could not do,” the actress said during her acceptance speech. “And I want to say to myself in front of all these beautiful people, go on girl with your bad self. You did that!”

Evan Peters and his “Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” co-star Niecy Nash-Betts are currently the odds-on favorites to take home the Emmys for Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actor and Best Limited Series/TV Movie Supporting Actress, respectively. If both prevail in January, “Dahmer” will join a very small group of programs that have bagged both prizes.
Since the limited series/TV movie supporting acting categories were created in 1975, only four programs have won both awards. The first to do it was the telefilm “The Promise” (1986), which racked up victories for James Woods in lead and Piper Laurie in supporting. It was followed by another TV movie, 1996’s “Rasputin: Dark Servant of Destiny” (Alan Rickman and Greta Scacchi), and the two-part miniseries “George Wallace” in 1998 (Gary Sinise and Mare Winningham).

A version of this story about “Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Drama and Limited Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
There’s a somber reason Niecy Nash-Betts is happy about her fourth Primetime Emmy nomination. “I feel like it brings more attention to Glenda Cleveland and her story (that was) going unheard, overlooked and underserved,” Nash-Betts said of her character in “Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” the first season of a planned Netflix anthology series, “Monster,” from Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan.
Though “Dahmer” is ostensibly focused on serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, it
seeks to give a face, voice and story to his victims. One of the indirect victims was
Cleveland, Dahmer’s neighbor, who repeatedly called the police after suspecting that the Milwaukee killer was harming people in his apartment. Despite her pleas, Cleveland was ignored by police.

When it came to Jeffrey Dahmer’s apartment in Netflix’s Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, director Carl Franklin pictured a gritty fish tank filled with yellow-green algae and lifeless fish. He wanted to reach audiences on a visceral level, placing viewers in the notorious serial killer’s putrid living room from the victim’s perspective.
“I wanted to create more of a sensory world as opposed to just a set — something that would evoke a certain aroma or a stench, let’s say, rather than aroma,” Franklin tells Rolling Stone.

By now, actress Niecy Nash-Betts has more than proved that she can excel in genres other than comedy. A quick look at her past Emmy nominations say as much, with an Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie nod for “When They See Us,” Ava DuVernay’s poignant limited series about the Central Park Five, listed right next to an Outstanding Television Movie nomination as an executive producer of “Reno 911!: The Hunt for QAnon.”
Yes, she can perform it all, but what her work on “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” proves is that Nash-Betts has the ability to elevate projects in a way where one could argue they would not work without her. Playing Glenda Cleveland, the titular serial killer’s next-door neighbor who desperately tried to alert authorities to Dahmer’s evildoing, only to be belittled and dismissed.

Carl Franklin was deep into work when he learned of his Emmy nomination — the second in his career — for directing the first episode of Netflix’s “Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.” “I was in New York, as I was doing another pilot on a miniseries, and they knew about it! “It’s always a surprise, a pleasant one when it happens,” Jenkins told Deadline of the nomination. “I loved working on the project and it’s nice to see it get some recognition. There’s some wonderful performances and the crew was great; the directors were terrific. Ryan Murphy — who I’m crazy about — he’s been thinking about this and working on this case for years, and I’m happy for him.”

A version of this story about Niecy Nash-Betts and “Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” first ran in the Limited Series/Movies issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
In Netflix’s “Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” Niecy Nash-Betts plays Glenda Cleveland, the neighbor of Jeffrey Dahmer who tried to warn the police about his killing, only to be repeatedly ignored. Her haunting performance has earned Nash-Betts her best reviews since her Emmy-nominated turn in 2019’s “When They See Us” — along with a SAG nomination and a Critic’s Choice Award win for best supporting actress in a limited series.
What interested you in the role of Glenda Cleveland?
When Ryan called me, I said yes before I even knew what it was. (Laughs) But when I started to unpack the story, the thing that got me on the hook was that she went so long being unheard.

A version of this story about the hairstyling of “Dahmer—Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” first appeared in the Limited Series/Movies issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
One of the great ironies of Jeffrey Dahmer’s existence is that while his apartment stank of, in his words, “rotting meat” (we all know what it really was), his physical appearance was initially anything but shabby. He even had a tidy blond hairdo, which Evan Peters wears as the cannibal serial killer in producer Ryan Murphy’s “Dahmer—Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” for Netflix.
“If you look at a lot of pictures, there were times where Dahmer had darker hair and times that he had these blond highlights and you’re trying to figure out where did these highlights come from?” hair department head Shay Sanford-Fong said. “But a lot of it is in Ryan’s research: When he was in jail,...

Roughly 20 years after breaking out on Comedy Central’s Reno 911! and ABC’s soapy drama Desperate Housewives, respectively, Niecy Nash-Betts and Eva Longoria are deep into second acts that, for them, were inevitable.
For Nash-Betts, it’s been a slow burn to be seen as a dramatic actor because, as she says of her God-given talent, “The Most High put being funny in my DNA.” But the biz has caught up: The three-time Emmy nominee for acting is a leading contender this year for playing Glenda Cleveland in Netflix’s Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, a role for which she’s already won a 2023 Critics Choice Award. Nash-Betts also recently wrapped her first season as the lead and executive producer of ABC’s The Rookie: Feds.

While there wasn’t a whole lot that Matthew Flood Ferguson remembered about notorious serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer before he boarded Netflix’s “Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” as the production designer, he did have a vivid memory of his reaction to first learning about the murderer’s youngest murder victim, 14-year-old Konerak Sinthasomphone.
“The one thing I remember is… [that] actually, [Sinthasomphone] escaped, and then the police brought him back to Jeffrey Dahmer; Dahmer lied, said that they were lovers, and they left him there,” Ferguson recollects during a recent webchat with Gold Derby (watch the exclusive video interview above). “And I remember hearing that and just being so horrified by it.”

Ryan Murphy and Netflix’s second installment in the Monster anthology will shine the light on Lyle and Erik Menendez. In 1996, the Menendez brothers were convicted of murdering their wealthy parents, José and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menéndez, in cold blood. The brothers claimed they killed their parents on August 20, 1989 out of desperation after years of physical abuse by both parents and sexual abuse by their father.
The jury didn’t believe the abuse defense and the brothers were sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Netflix hasn’t confirmed any details on the upcoming installment other than the official title – Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menéndez Story.
The first installment of Monster, Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, stars Evan Peters in the titular role. The cast also includes Richard Jenkins as Lionel Dahmer, Molly Ringwald as Shari Dahmer, Michael Beach as Detective Murphy, and Niecy Nash as Glenda Cleveland.

The Ryan Murphy brand launched another successful product in 2022 with the excessively monikered "Dahmer -- Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story." It was a dark companion piece to the already-plenty-dour "American Crime Story" anthology series (which gave us the shamelessly entertaining "The People v. O.J. Simpson" in its first season), and while it didn't go down especially well with critics, the lead performances from Evan Peters and Niecy Nash earned nominations at the 2023 Screen Actors Guild Awards. This bodes particularly well for the series' 2023 Primetime Emmy prospects. Add in Netflix's claim that the show logged one billion views in its first 60 days of streaming, and this means it's time for another unnerving exploration of notoriously grisly murders.
Up next is "Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menéndez Story." Whatever you think of Murphy's work, you have to admit that this is square in his sensationalistic wheelhouse. Here's everything we...

For actors Evan Peters and Niecy Nash-Betts, as well as director Paris Barclay, the critical mission with Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story was to shift the focus of the narrative around the serial killer away from Dahmer himself and toward his many victims, as well as the systemic racism and institutional failures of the police that allowed him to get away with his crimes.

Hot on the heels of a Critics Choice Award win and Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations, Niecy Nash-Betts is now the odds-on favorite to take home the Best Limited Series/TV Movie Supporting Actress Emmy for “Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.” But will she, if nominated, be able to sustain her momentum all the way through the end of voting in late August? Her trajectory could be similar to that of the reigning champ in the category, Jennifer Coolidge (“The White Lotus”), who also prevailed for a buzzy show that came out very early in the Emmy cycle after landing bids at all winter awards but only triumphing at Critics Choice.
The uncanny similarities between Coolidge’s and Nash-Betts’ trajectories begin with “The White Lotus” and “Dahmer” both being first installments of anthology series that seemingly came out of nowhere and not only became hot...

After being one of three actors to win an Emmy for “Mare of Easttown” in 2021, Evan Peters could now triumph for another limited series that can bag a trio of acting victories with Netflix’s “Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.”
“Mare” earned its three prizes for Kate Winslet in lead actress and Peters and Julianne Nicholson in their respective supporting acting categories. “Dahmer” — which is the first iteration of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan‘s “Monster” anthology series and stars Peters as the titular serial killer — can now win that same combination of awards: one lead category (for Peters) and both supporting races (for Niecy Nash-Betts and Richard Jenkins).
Of the three “Dahmer” actors, the one best positioned to prevail is probably Peters himself. The 36-year-old performer, who’s in first place in our limited series/TV movie actor odds, has been the presumed frontrunner ever since the...

After Cicely Tyson’s performance in the two-part CBS drama “Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All” earned her a spot in the very first Best TV Movie/Miniseries Actress SAG Award lineup, it took 26 years for another Black woman to be recognized by the organization for an actual miniseries. The subset started by Tyson in 1995 now includes five actresses, with the latest entrant being “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” cast member Niecy Nash-Betts. If she takes this year’s prize, Nash-Betts will be the fifth Black woman to ever prevail in this category and the first to be honored for a multi-part limited program.

On “Inventing Anna,” Anna “Delvey” Sorokin has no time for her boyfriend Chase (Saamer Usmani), but Irl, Screen Actors Guild Award voters definitely had time for Julia Garner. Should the now seven-time nominee triumph for the uber-memeified zeitgeist hit, she would take home her very first statuette.

Immediately after losing on his first Screen Actors Guild Awards outing to Michael Keaton (“Dopesick”), Evan Peters is back in the running for the organization’s Best TV Movie/Miniseries Actor prize. With his new bid for “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” the former “Mare of Easttown” nominee follows James Garner, Gary Sinise, and Tom Wilkinson as only the fourth back-to-back contender in his category’s history. At 36, he also surpasses Sinise (who was 40 on his second bid in 1996) as the youngest person to ever be nominated twice by the guild for limited series or telefilm acting.
None of Peters’ current competitors are SAG Awards newcomers, but only Steve Carell (“The Patient”) joins him in having been previously recognized for TV work. Two of the 12 nominations he received for “The Office” led to comedy ensemble victories (2007-2008), and he also has a film cast win to his name for 2006’s “Little Miss Sunshine.

The actor played Jeffrey Dahmer's neighbor Glenda Cleveland in Ryan Murphy's "Dahmer - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story," and in her speech, she looked back on her journey in the entertainment industry, going back to where it all began.
"When I decided to become an actor - I saw myself doing drama," she said at the Jan 15. event. "They said, stay in your comedy lane. Some people want to leave you where they meet you. I did what I knew to do: I cried, and I told my mother," she continued. "I said, 'Don't you think I'm a good dramatic actress?' She said, 'Girl, I don't, but you can be. You find the best class in this town, and I will work overtime to pay for it.

Fortunately, Nash has a ready answer for those ambivalent fans. “I feel like it’s shining more of a light on the victims than it is on the killer,” says the actress, who plays Glenda Cleveland, a real-life neighbor of Dahmer who repeatedly tried to report his crimes to the police. “Normally, you view it from the lead character’s point of view, but you actually get to enter the story through the eyes of his neighbor.” Here, Nash — who currently stars on Reno: 911! and The Rookie: Feds — talks about the role that has changed her life.

Typically, Deadline and other media outlets are overwhelmed with requests after the Golden Globes to talk to giddy actors and actresses who just received their first (or repeat) nominations from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. But not this year. Despite a new level of transparency by the HFPA and promises that it has cleaned house, everyone still remains in a veritable “wait and see” state when it comes to the new and “improved” Golden Globes.

“They want to be seen and they both want to be heard. They want to be able to take up space and know that they have value in the world,” declares Niecy Nash-Betts, who this season not only stars in the new ABC crime dramedy “The Rookie: Feds,” but also features in “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” as the real-life neighbor of the monstrous serial killer. For our recent webchat she says, “Simone waited later in life to live her dream of becoming an FBI agent, but she still feels like she has value,” she says, adding about the woman she portrays in “Dahmer” that “in trying to call the police and trying to share what she was experiencing through living next door to Jeffrey Dahmer wanted to be heard, wanted her voice to have value in the world, and neither of them ever stopped trying.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Actor Evan Peters, who plays Jeffrey Dahmer in Netflix’s hugely successful ‘Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story’, explained the arduous prep he did to portray the notorious serial killer.
The 35-year-old actor plays Dahmer in Ryan Murphy’s ‘Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story’, and while the series has garnered its fair share of criticism, Peters’ visceral performance has been widely praised.
In a conversation with Murphy and the series’ ensemble cast, released on November 28, Peters detailed the arduous work that went into capturing Dahmer’s ominous essence.
“He has such a distinct voice, and that dialect,” Peters said.
“I worked with dialect coaches and then created this 45-minute audio composite that I listened to every day to stay in the accent, but also to really get into the mindset for the day and all the scenes we were shooting. I tried to attempt to understand what...

The 1971 Golden Globes marked the first instance of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association bestowing awards for supporting TV performances. The inaugural male and female recipients of these two prizes were James Brolin and Gail Fisher (“Mannix”), both of whom had won Emmys for the same roles eight months earlier. Fisher followed Diahann Carroll as the second Black woman to win a Golden Globe in any acting category, and, five decades later, remains the only Black Best TV Supporting Actress champ. She could, however, finally have company if Niecy Nash (“Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story”) catches the attention of enough voters this year. And Nash would make history in her own right by becoming the first Black actress to win a Golden Globe for any limited series.
