Back in 1983, legendary producer Roger Corman brought the world a sword and sorcery film with an awesome title: Deathstalker. It was so successful, it paved the way for three sequels: Deathstalker II: Duel of the Titans (1987), Deathstalker and the Warriors from Hell (1988), and Deathstalker IV: Match of the Titans (1991). The franchise went dormant for more than thirty years, but earlier this month we learned that it’s being revived by filmmaker Steven Kostanski – whose previous credits include Manborg, Father’s Day, The Void, Leprechaun Returns, Psycho Goreman, and episodes of the short-lived Day of the Dead TV series. Kostanski is writing and directing a Deathstalker remake that has Daniel Bernhardt (John Wick) on board to play the title character… and now more details on the plot have been revealed!

The Breach, not to be confused with Breach, is the second feature from Rue Morgue founding editor Rodrigo Gudiño (The Last Will and Testament of Rosalind Leigh). Co-written by Nick Cutter and Ian Weir based on Cutter’s novel, its mix of haunted house and mad scientist themes attracted a lot of pre-release buzz which I was hoping it would live up to.
John Hawkins has one week left as sheriff of Lone Crow. Then he can put the town, and his ex Meg, behind him and start a new job in the city. That, of course, means something terrible has to happen before he can leave. And it does when a canoe bearing the mutilated remains of theoretical physicist Cole Parsons washes up at a local park.

The Breach
When a body washes up on the riverbank in a remote Canadian town, it plunges a group of investigators into one of the strangest cases they’ve ever had to handle. Police procedural meets cosmic horror in Rodrigo Gudiño’s The Breach, with elements of haunted house movie and creature feature developed along the way. It’s an ambitious piece of work and not one you’ll forget in a hurry.
I first saw the film at Fantasia in 2022, and although I enjoyed it at the time, I simply didn’t have room in my schedule for any more interviews, so I was pleased to learn that it was getting a digital release – one year later – allowing me to give it the attention it deserves. Both periods were busy for Rodrigo, of course, with a great deal to do to promote the film. He was in Porta Vallarta,...

It's a hodgepodge assortment of influences and collaborators that comes together as science fiction with body horror accents, hinged on a third act loaded with gnarly practical effects. A marriage of police procedural and Lovecraftian horror, Rodrigo Gudiño and Ian Weir’s take on Nick Cutter’s popular genre novel is treading familiar territory for the Fantasia international Film Festival but manages to acquit itself with some distinction thanks to the groundedness and specificity of its approach. It begins when a spectacularly mangled body floats down the Porcupine river in a canoe, and ends in a place which is predictable yet nonetheless retains its sinister quality.
Allan Hawco plays police chief John Hawkins, who is just one week away from moving down south to take up a new job – the very worst time to happen upon a case like this. “This is Jake’s kind of case,” says an officer at the scene of the discovery, referring to Jacob Redgrave (Wesley French). As the jealous former boyfriend of Meg (Emily Alatalo), the woman whom John is on the verge of.

“Face Off” helmer John Woo will receive a Career Achievement Award during Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival, about to celebrate its 26th edition. The Hong Kong filmmaker is currently working on “Silent Night,” starring Joel Kinnaman and Kid Cudi.
“I defy anyone to watch ‘Bullet in the Head,’ ‘Hard Boiled’ or ‘The Killer’ and not walk away wanting to break down the shots and make a movie. His use of camera movement, close-ups, the ways he would block and choreograph, it’s astonishing to look at,” Fantasia’s artistic director Mitch Davis told Variety, noting the “unexpected poetry” of Woo’s work.
“They are such unconventionally soulful films. I wish we could somehow unleash a flock of doves in the cinema when he steps onto the stage. Backlit.”

Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi, Harold Torres, and Catalina Sandino Moreno additionally star.
Woo returned to making movies in China after helming 2003’s “Paycheck” starring Ben Affleck. The director recently completed Chinese features “The Crossing” and sequel “The Crossing 2” in 2014 and 2015, respectively, before helming the 2017 police-thriller “Manhunt.”

Just before the weekend we caught wind of news that production was completed on an adaptation of Nick Cutter's horror novel The Breach. The adaptation was directed by Rodrigo Gudiño, president of Rue Morgue Magazine and director of The Last Will and Testament of Rosalind Leigh. The Breach tells the story of John Hawkins - counting down his last days as Police Chief in the tiny town of Lone Crow, nestled deep in the desolate woods of Northern Ontario. But when a mangled body with uncanny wounds washes up on the shores of Porcupine River, he’s pulled into a horrific mystery that defies comprehension. Our friends at Raven Banner Entertainment are co-producers on the pic which was produced by Pasha Patriki of Hangar 18...

Raven Banner Entertainment announced it has completed production on Rue Morgue Magazine founder Rodrigo Gudiño’s “The Breach,” marking a reunion with former Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash, who serves as the film’s executive producer and co-producer of the score.
Based on a book by horror novelist Nick Cutter (born Craig Davidson), with a screenplay co-penned by Cutter and Ian Weird, “The Breach” centers on John Hawkins, who is set to retire from his post as police chief of the small town of Lone Crow that is tucked away in the deep woods of northern Ontario. But following the discovery of a gruesome body with uncanny injuries, he’s pulled into an investigation to solve the horrifying mystery, which evades explanation.

This is just one of those 'Oh hell. Why not' kind of news bits for today. Ever since I heard about Rodrigo Gudiño's plan to retool the 1972 western, Cut-Throats Nine, a few years ago in a back alley cinema here in Toronto, I have been eagerly awaiting this project. A number of high profile actors are already attached, too, by way of Mads Mikkelsen and Harvey Keitel. Keeping it local, Canadian actor Kris Holden Ried and British-born but still an iconic mainstay in Canadian productions, Julian Richings, have also been announced for the cast. So why not add a little rock n' roll? Word out today that guitar legend and horror enthusiast Slash will be joining the production! Sadly, as of this moment, he is only...

Any regular readers of Sound On Sight, or listeners of our Sordid Cinema podcast, should know that I am a huge fan of horror films. I recently published a 75 000 + word article counting down the 100 greatest horror films ever made – and every year, I whip a list of the best horror films released. This year, the terror is accompanied by demonic possession, cannibalistic rituals, low-budget zom-coms, Tarantino’s favourite film, and the dark side of Disney.
Note: I’ve included three special mentions – all of which could be labeled horror, but I felt work best as thrillers instead. Enjoy!
****
Special Mention: Stoker
Directed by Chan-wook Park
Written by Wentworth Miller
USA, 2013
Chan-wook Park’s Stoker is a Gothic fairy tale, a family drama, and a beautifully twisted, pitch-black coming-of-age story, all at once. This slow-burning psychological thriller isn’t afraid to cross into uncomfortable places, often edging close to taboo territory.

From Blood and Donuts and Ginger Snaps to Splice and, his latest, Haunter, producer Steve Hoban has been a staple in the Canadian horror scene since the mid Nineties.
He’s now working again with director Vincenzo Natali on a new experimental web series called Darknet that should be making its way onto television here in the States in the near future. For now, as of 12:01am this morning, fans can watch the first installment over at Darknetfiles.com. And, believe me, it’s worth checking out. Consisting of interweaving storylines and connected characters in different instances of urban horror, the first episode runs about 25 minutes and features some really solid, well-crafted moments. Just before the debut, Hoban was kind of enough to speak with us for a few minutes to talk about the series.

Directed by Vincenzo Natali ("Splice"), the pilot below is for "Darknet," an intriguing new horror anthology series that will air on Canada's Super Channel and on the website darknetfiles.com. Described as being made up of "snippets of people's lives being interrupted by vivid instances of unexpected violence or shocking strangeness," "Darknet" recalls browsing on a web site full of strange, sinister material, the episode below consisting of interwoven short horror stories. It also brings to mind "V/H/S" in its bringing in of different directors, in this case Natali's "Splice" producer Steve Hoban (making his directorial debut in the second episode), Brett Sullivan ("Orphan Black"), Rodrigo Gudiño ("The Last Will and Testament of Rosalind Leigh") and newcomers Anthony Scott Burns and Jeremy Ball. Natali, Pascal Trottier, Doug Taylor ("Splice"), James Kee, Randall Cole ("388 Arletta Ave") and Sarah Larsen are the writers. The first season of "Darknet" will begin airing on.
