“I used to wonder who I would be if this hadn’t happened to me,” the young narrator of Sarah Polley’s Women Talking muses early on. The film quickly abandons that question, though, in favor of a more interesting one: Who will this child, and the other women of this drama, be because of the traumatic events they endured? It is a question Polley, the Oscar-nominated screenwriter, filmmaker and former child star, has given a fair amount of consideration lately.

Sarah Polley’s upcoming film “Women Talking”, which centres on the trauma of sexual violence, doesn’t actually show any violence onscreen.
The intentional filmmaking decision was made by the director and screenwriter to keep the story fixated on the eight women living in an isolated religious colony, who struggle to reconcile their faith, following a series of sexual assaults.
Based on the novel of the same name by Miriam Toews, the film is inspired by a real-life incident in which “women were drugged and raped in their sleep in a Mennonite colony in Bolivia for four years,” as per The Hollywood Reporter.
“I have rarely found that sexual assault captured on film has been additive or necessary to a film,” Polley told the publication of her decision to keep audiences from seeing any acts of violence. “I think in the case of this film, the important thing was the...

Billy Bob Thornton is an unlikely but enduring movie star. He blasted onto the scene as a character actor in movies like One False Move and Tombstone before his 1996 passion project, Sling Blade, earned him a best screenplay Academy Award while also netting him a Best Actor nomination. Made for just over 1 million, it was a solid box office hit, grossing 30 times its budget, and from there, Thornton’s career went into high gear. While his directorial career went on the back-burner after Harvey Weinstein cut his Cormac McCarthy adaptation, All the Pretty Horses, to shreds, his acting career was white-hot, earning a best-supporting actor nomination for Sam Raimi’s A Simple Plan and leading movies such as Monster’s Ball, Friday Night Lights, The Man Who Wasn’t There, and netting high profile supporting roles in Armageddon, Primary Colors, Bandits, Love Actually and so many more.

The New York Review of Books former top editor is speaking out after being ousted from his job for publishing an essay by MeToo man Jian Ghomeshi.
In remarks to the Dutch magazine Vrij Nederland, Ian Buruma says he was the victim of a Twitter mob that punished him without due process.
“It is rather ironic: as editor of The New York Review of Books I published a theme issue about #MeToo-offenders who had not been convicted in a court of law but by social media. And now I myself am publicly pilloried,” he told the publication. “I have now myself been convicted on Twitter, without any due process.”

Ian Buruma, the top editor of The New York Review of Books, has left his post in the wake of his defense of publishing an essay by disgraced Canadian ex-radio host Jian Ghomeshi.
The exit follows a similar, widely criticized radio defense by the publisher of Harper’s magazine of a piece written by accused #MeToo perpetrator John Hockenberry.
The Ghomeshi piece is billed on the cover of the august periodical’s current issue, which explores the theme “The Fall of Men.” Headlined “Reflections From a Hashtag,” the essay aims to shed light on the fate of men who have been accused of misdeeds and the reputational price they pay in the #MeToo era. Ghomeshi is known for co-founding the Canadian public radio show Q, a Fresh Air-like program featuring interviews with a cross-section of cultural and political figures. It airs nightly in New York on Wnyc and on dozens of other U.

New York Review of Books editor Ian Buruma exited his duties on Wednesday, a spokesperson for the company told TheWrap. Another individual familiar with the matter said the company was preparing to issue a statement.
The departure comes just days after Buruma published an essay from former Canadian radio personality Jian Ghomeshi, whose career imploded after he faced multiple accusations of sexual misconduct in 2014.
In the piece, “Reflections from a Hashtag” Ghomeshi broadly defended himself and noted that he had been acquitted of all criminal charges stemming from the accusations.

As Hollywood continues to reel from new and damning allegations of sexual assault, it’s time for an obvious reminder: Keep your hands to yourself. Over the weekend, actors Kevin Spacey and Adam Sandler were both accused of acting inappropriately in very different fashions, though both claims at least partially stem from the alleged perpetrator’s inability to respect another person’s personal space, both in person and in private, both passed off as a “friendly gesture” or something far more nefarious. Another person’s body isn’t yours for the taking, no matter how famous or powerful you may be.
But it’s the public nature of some of these allegations that is most damning, as a fresh wave of claims have been bolstered because of the explicitly open nature of them. They’re on video, they’re packaged as part of some giddy marketing push, and they’re now wholly impossible to ignore.

An independent investigation conducted by lawyer Janice Rubin has concluded that CBC management failed to properly act on reports that former Q host Jian Ghomeshi sexually harassed his female co-workers. The report states that Ghomeshi's behavior was "considered to create an intimidating, humiliating, hostile or offensive work environment," and that by ignoring his actions, higher-ups at CBC declined to provide a workplace "free from disrespectful and abusive behaviour."Chris Boyce and Todd Spencer, two executives who were involved in the internal investigation that originally cleared Ghomeshi, have been fired after being placed on indefinite leave in January. Ghomeshi has since been fired from the network and charged with sexual assault by Toronto prosecutors. He's been released on $100,000 bail, and his lawyer says he will plead not guilty to the charges at a hearing on April 28.

Canadian media personality Jian Ghomeshi — who is facing a slew of sexual-abuse allegations — has dropped the $55 million lawsuit he and his lawyers filed last month against the CBC, the Toronto Star reports. "The parties have reached a settlement," said CBC spokesman Chuck Thompson. Ghomeshi will have to pay $18,000 in legal costs to the broadcaster, and the rest of his exit will be dealt with internally, as part of a "unionized grievance process." Thompson, via CBC, added that Ghomeshi will be "getting nothing."The former Q host's lawyers filed the suit after the CBC fired him in October. Ghomeshi claimed the CBC had acted "in bad faith," and elaborated on Facebook that his ouster stemmed from "the risk of my private sex life being made public as a result of a campaign of false allegations pursed by a jilted ex girlfriend and a freelance writer." More unpleasant details have emerged in the case of Jian Ghomeshi, the iconic Canadian broadcaster who was fired from his CBC radio show "Q" this past Sunday. While details of his dismissal weren’t immediately clear, a Toronto Star article released Sunday night revealed that four women alleged that Ghomeshi was violent with them during or leading up to sex. Ghomeshi responded to the firing with a $50 million lawsuit against the CBC and a lengthy Facebook post about his proclivities for Bdsm and the claim that the firing was based on a “moral judgment” about his personal sexual preferences. Now four more women have come forward, accusing Ghomeshi of sexually abusive behavior dating back as far as 2002 in a Toronto Star article released Wednesday. Over the weekend, a major sex scandal broke in the high-stakes world of Canadian public radio — and I fully acknowledge that the combination of the words Canadian, public radio, sex, and scandal might seem, at the least, incongruous. The short version: Jian Ghomeshi, the 47-year-old host of a very popular, mostly culture-related radio show called "Q" (which airs in New York on Wnyc on weeknights at 10 p.m.) was fired abruptly by his employer, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, the publicly funded broadcaster that produces television and radio. Ghomeshi released a long statement on Facebook on Sunday, claiming, in essence, that he’d been fired due to a campaign orchestrated by an ex-lover to expose his bedroom practices, including consensual Bdsm. The Toronto Star then published an article, which had been in the works for several months, in which three anonymous women detailed serious allegations of sexual misconduct by Ghomeshi, including workplace harassment.

Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber is planning a stage show adaptation of School of Rock.
The composer revealed to CBC Radio that he has acquired the rights to the 2003 comedy movie starring Jack Black.
He explained that he will undertake the project once he has completed work on his upcoming musical based on the Profumo scandal.
Lloyd Webber told host Jian Ghomeshi that he was "very excited" about the idea, and that he may add new songs to the musical.

He explained that he will undertake the project once he has completed work on his upcoming musical based on the Profumo scandal.

“Movies do not change anything…”Werner Herzog says calmly into the microphone surrounded by the scarlet and black colours of Qtv radio’s studio. The interviewer, Jian Ghomeshi, is momentarily stunned and repeats Herzog’s statement in search of an explanation. Ghomeshi’s surprise is understandable. In front of him sits arguably one of the most respected directors alive today, so much so, his films are considered some of the finest in recent film history by cinema goers and critics alike. However, Herzog’s statement is, as always, no off the cuff remark. He effortlessly articulates his point in his distinct and captivating German accent. The point he makes in regard to one of his more recent films ‘Into the Abyss’ (a film about the death penalty in the United States) is that the notion that films can evoke effective change is exaggerated and change can only come about through political debate and media outlets,...

Canada's Independent Production Fund (Ipf) has again renewed its web series funding program, committing $1.4 million for 15 scripted drama series. In 2010, the Ipf established the web series funding program "to support the exploration and potential for high quality, story driven drama for web audiences." Last year the program invested $1.2M in the production of 11 original drama series, including Toronto-based tween detective series Ruby Skye P.I. from Story2.Oh, and earmarked another $1M in funding for 2011. The Ipf Board of Directors approved funding for 9 English and 6 French drama series. An international jury and the Board evaluated projects based on content, production styles and processes, formats, business and promotion models, , and audience and revenue potential. The selection process required the evaluation of 160 applications which were short-listed to 30 web series from production companies across the country. Jury members included Mio Adilman, Web Columnist for CBC Radio's Q with Jian Ghomeshi; Sophie Dufort, vice-présidente...

The 2010 Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival announced the winners of their juried awards this evening at the Isabel Bader Theater in Toronto. Hosted by Canadian radio and television personality Jian Ghomeshi (who - for those unaware - jokingly explained himself as the "Persian-Canadian Katie Couric"), the ceremony marked the winding down of the enormously successful fest, which saw sold-out screening after sold-out screening and a 10% increase in attendance ...

Memo to radio host Jian Ghomeshi: it's now safe to call Billy Bob Thornton an actor again, he's back to making movies. No more mashed potatoes without gravy. Thornton has signed on to the adaptation of the novel Pound For Pound from F.X. Toole, pen name of late boxer and author Jerry Boyd who also wrote the stories that inspired Million Dollar Baby. Billy Bob will play a widowed former boxer whose loss of his grandson triggers a depression, just as he meets a young up-and-coming Latino...

Jimmy Kimmel did the same thing a Canadian radio host did - dared to call Billy Bob Thornton a movie actor - only this time the reaction was much less caustic. During an interview earlier this month involving Thornton's band, The Boxmasters, Thornton mumbled answers to host Jian Ghomeshi and insulted Canadian audiences, comparing them to "mashed potatoes without gravy." The band got boos and catcalls when it appeared in Toronto as the opening act for Willie Nelson. During Tuesday's appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the host asked: "Billy, is it Ok I mention that you're an actor? I don't...

"There's something about the guy that makes me uneasy. He's not going to say fuck stick in front of the children, is he?"
--John Ritter as mall manager Bob Chipeska, referring to Billy Bob Thornton's Santa Willie, in "Bad Santa"
When Billy Bob Thornton recently tripped out in Joaquin Phoenix-rivaling fashion on a Canadian radio interviewer, he inadvertently gave one the worst performances of his acting career -- unless we set aside his inability to adapt and play along and judge that bitter character by how incredibly unsettling he was. In that case, it may well rank among his best. Thornton might as well have been wearing his "Bad Santa" costume during the painful exchange, in which he refused to answer or took umbrage to questions, repeatedly took host Jian Ghomeshi to task, swore, and insulted his host country. It's hard not to imagine there was some...

It hasn't been a good week for Billy Bob Thornton. First, he's in Canada on tour with his band The Boxmasters, and he doesn't like Canadian crowds, calling them "mashed potatoes without the gravy." That rather insulting description was part of radio chat in which Billy Bob felt the interviewer disrespected him by calling him an Oscar winner. And now, he's cancelling the Canadian tour altogether.
During The Boxmasters' set opening for Willie Nelson Thursday night at Massey Hall in Toronto, Thornton was booed by the crowd, which really turned on him when we brought the interview up in between songs.
"Boo all you want, but I want to say something," Thornton told the crowd. "We're really happy to be here, but I need to say something. I talked to this asshole yesterday," he said, referencing interview Jian Ghomeshi.

After a terse and frankly impolite interview with Canadian radio host Jian Ghomeshi, whose egregious error seemed to be he mentioned that his interviewee, actor Billy Bob Thornton, was an actor; Thornton has now abandoned his Willie Nelson opening act gig in Canada. In a bizarre interview (see below) where Thornton got progressively more passive aggressive by answering direct questions with "I don't know" or monosyllabic answers, the actor compared the Canada's fans to mashed potatoes with no gravy. Thornton's band, The Boxmasters, felt the wrath of the Canadian audience as they opened for Willie Nelson on Thursday in Toronto, where the actor and his band mates were booed, and catcalls rang out of "Here comes the gravy." Nelson's...

We’re not quite sure what's up with Billy Bob Thornton and his attitude lately, but he seems to think it's ok to treat a radio host like garbage during a live show. Yesterday news broke of Billy Bob flipping out at radio host Jian Ghomeshi when being interviewed at a Canadian radio station. Billy Bob was there to promote his new album with his band The Boxmasters. The radio host made a quick mention that Billy Bob is known around the world for his cinematic accomplishments, but has now turned his focus to music. Rather than being...

Billy Bob Thornton appeared on a Canadian radio show to do an interview about his band The Boxmasters. He appeared with three other bandmates, who were more than happy to discuss their music, their tour and anything else. Host Jian Ghomeshi did a good job of spreading the question across all guests and not just focus on Thornton, but every time Thornton was asked anything, the actor felt the need to be sarcastic and rude. At one point he even started discussing "Famous Monsters of Filmland" magazine when asked about the music he liked as a kid. Thornton also complained about Canadian audiences (on a Canadian show), stating that they don't get on their feet during a performance and that they are like mashed potatoes without the gravy. He ended his appearance by refusing to play with the band, even though he's the lead singer. Watch the video below to...

“Would you ask Tom Petty that?”
That’s the question posed to Jian Ghomeshi on Canadian public radio on by actor Billy Bob Thornton. Thornton clearly didn’t want to do the interview and it appeared to be simply because the host introducted Thornton as an actor, and not band member with his current group The Boxmasters.
I interviewed Thornton when he was making the rounds for The Astronaut Farmer, while the movie was forgettable, he wasn’t. I mainly spoke about his swagger, and the fact that he was flirting non-stop with Virginia Madsen. I liked the guy, but probably because he wasn’t an arse.
