Exclusive: Richard Shepard has signed with Tfc. The move reunites the Emmy and DGA Award-winning director-writer with former WME partner David Stone who founded the management company in 2020 with UTA’s Ben Jacobson.
“I’m super psyched to be back in business with David Stone,” said Shepard who was a client of Stone’s at WME years ago. “He’s one of the smartest guys in the business, and along with Zach Carlisle and the rest of the folks at Tfc I’m excited for this next chapter.”
Shepard has directed 10 television pilots that have gone to series — or the tone-setting pilot episodes of shows with straight-to-series orders — including Criminal Minds, Ugly Betty, for which he won an Emmy, Rosewood, Salem, Sweetbitter, Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist and Acapulco, now in its third season on Apple. Netflix’s Good Times reboot has drawn ire from audiences and national organizations such as the NAACP for its perceived stereotypical depictions of African Americans since its trailer was first released on March 27. That same day, a Change.org petition, which has gathered some 5,000 signatures, was launched calling on viewers to boycott the new show which “promotes violence, culture destruction of the Black community and alcohol abuse,” the creator of the petition wrote.
Showrunner Ranada Shepard understands the knee-jerk reaction.
“You haven’t seen J.B. [Smoove] and Yvette [Nicole Brown] and Marsai [Martin] and Jay Pharoah and Slink Johnson on couches all across America, which typically happens when you’re rolling out a show. There was no framing that the audience had, it was just: Watch this and form an opinion. And, they watched and they formed an opinion,” Shepard tells THR in the conversation below.

It took Richard Shepard years to get out of “movie jail” after he made “The Linguini Incident,” the nearly-forgotten 1991 crime comedy starring David Bowie and Rosanna Arquette. But now the film is getting a second chance, with a series of screenings and an upcoming Blu-ray release.
Just about everything went wrong with the production that could go wrong, Shepard recalls. “I made this movie when I was 25 — and I was no genius at 25,” admits the director, who went on to helm features including “The Perfection” as well as TV series like Lena Dunham’s HBO comedy “Girls.”
Unlike Dunham, who was “in complete control of her artistic self” at that age, “I was not,” says Shepard.
But when his original co-producer, Sarah Jackson, suggested he try to rerelease a director’s cut of the scrappy indie caper about two restaurant employees who decide to rob their bosses, Shepard jumped at...

In 2014, I was in Denver for 4/20. It was a heady time. Colorado had recently legalized recreational cannabis, and High Times was capitalizing on the moment by throwing a two-day weed extravaganza known as the Cannabis Cup. I was an editor for them, and I’d been pressed into service along with the rest of the team to run the event. We knew it was going to be big, but we weren’t prepared for how huge and chaotic it turned out to be. Traffic was backed up for miles, people...

John Cena offered the tiniest glimmer of insight into the long-running feud between Vin Diesel and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson that shook the Fast and Furious franchise.
During an interview on the Armchair Expert podcast, host Dax Shepard asked Cena about joining the long-running franchise on its ninth installment and navigating its well-established pecking order. That was basically a way of getting to the real matter at hand — Diesel v. Johnson — with Shepard asking about the rumors that the two made for a “rough pairing.”

When Ranada Shepard first got the call to serve as showrunner and executive producer of an animated reboot of Good Times, it didn’t take her long to decide she was interested. The original Good Times, created by Mike Evans and Eric Montes and executive-produced by the late television legend Norman Lear, made history in the ’70s as television’s first Black two-parent family sitcom.
Shepard told Netflix, “Once Sony said ‘Good Times,’ ‘Norman Lear,’ I said, ‘Say less. I’m there.’”
Good Times, coming to Netflix on April 12, is also executive-produced by Stephen Curry, Lear, and Seth MacFarlane. It’s a spiritual sequel of sorts to the live-action original, centering on the fourth generation of the Evans family living in apartment 17C of a Chicago housing project. Doug Liman got a standing ovation at the SXSW premiere of his remake of “Road House” — an event that he originally promised he’d boycott.
Festivalgoers chanted his name — “Doug! Doug! Doug!” — at the end of a post-screening Q&a after star Jake Gyllenhaal called out to the director, who was seated among the crowd.
Gyllenhaal first made Liman’s attendance known while introducing the film, saying, “I want to thank our incredible director. He’s in the audience tonight. He’s been a friend for over 15 years, I’ve wanted to work with him for that time, we’re so lucky. He’s so brilliant and this movie is too.”
Of course, Gyllenhaal also made a point to thank the company that Liman’s boycott was meant to target. Before mentioning Liman or his castmates, the actor said, “We have our Amazon folks here, who have been so fantastic,” mentioning...

Bradley Cooper is opening up about how becoming a father has helped ground him in life.
During an appearance on Monday’s episode of the Armchair Expert With Dax Shepard podcast, the Maestro actor-director-producer revealed, “I’m not sure I’d be alive if I wasn’t a dad.”
Cooper and Irina Shayk, who dated from 2015 to 2019, welcomed their daughter, Lea, in 2017.
“I just needed someone to say, like, ‘We’re gonna drop this massive anchor,’” the Oscar-nominated actor told Shepard. “I’m like, ‘Why? We’re speeding! The Netflix series, which landed Ortega her first Emmy nomination, will begin filming in April. Ortega told E! “I’ve received some scripts for the second season, and we’re definitely leaning into more horror,” Ortega said. “It’s really, really exciting because, all throughout the show, while Wednesday does need a little bit of an arc, she never really changes, and that’s the wonderful thing about her.
Ortega continued, “There’s really, really good one-liners, and I think everything’s bigger. It’s a lot more action-packed. Each episode will probably feel a little bit more like a movie, which is nice.”

HBO chief Casey Bloys faced the critics — and the music — on Thursday.
The November 2 presentation of HBO and Max’s 2024 content slates was supposed to be a celebration of the next year in prestige TV. The press event, well-attended by IndieWire, was overshadowed by a scandal — one both small in stature and in its pettiness.
As first reported by Rolling Stone on Wednesday, November 1, Bloys has directed lower-level staff to create a fake Twitter account to respond harshly to TV critics who posted negative reviews about HBO shows. It happened on at least six occasions.
Bloys addressed the story on Thursday. It “was a very, very dumb idea,” he said — and then Bloys attempted to explain his “mindset” at the time.

Bloodthirst is from the folks at Mahal Empire, last year they gave us their version of the zombie apocalypse, Bridge of the Doomed. This year they’re revisiting the apocalypse, only in Bloodthirst the threat comes from a different strain of the undead, vampires. Interestingly, both films were directed by Michael Su and written by Adrian Milnes this time with a story credit to Massimiliano Cerchi
In the world of Bloodthirst two factions of vampires fight for control of what’s left of the planet. What’s left of humanity is caught in the middle and rapidly heading for extinction, something that would doom the vampires as well. John Shepard walks that world as a vampire hunter who’s on the trail of The Master Vampire.

When detectives explore a cold case murder, they are surprised to learn what the DNA left behind can tell them. In the latest episode of Oxygen True Crime, Real Murders of Los Angeles, detectives recall the cold case murder of Sherri Rasmussen, a nurse administrator who was found dead in her apartment with bite marks on her arm.
Sherri was murdered in what police thought was a botched break-in, likely done by two males. In an exclusive clip shared with Showbiz Cheat Sheet, retired detective Cliff Shepard recalled digging back into the cold case in 2001.
The 1986 murder of Sherri Rasmussen appeared to be something they could hopefully solve because DNA from bite marks was left on the victim’s arm.
“Our emphasis was on DNA cases,” he explained. “Because DNA was new to us. We were learning what to do with it.”

The Untold Story Of A Lost Classic: What Ever Happened To Gram Parsons’ Sci-Fi Film ‘Saturation 70’?
In the late 1960s, Gram Parsons, fresh from leaving The Byrds and becoming close pals with the Rolling Stones, signed on to star in a sci-fi film, Saturation 70.
Directed by Anthony Foutz, who worked with the likes of Orson Welles and Richard Lyford and was the son of a very early Walt Disney exec, the film was shot across Joshua Tree and Los Angeles.
But Saturation 70, which also featured the work of Douglas Trumbull, the pioneering special effects wizard behind 2001: A Space Odyssey and Blade Runner, was never finished, and the footage subsequently vanished.
But a new book tells the wild story of a possible lost classic.
Chris Campion, who rediscovered the film while working on a book about The Mamas & The Papas, is putting together Saturation 70: A Vision Past of the Future Foretold, raising money via Kickstarter for the project with a view to publish next spring via Wolf+Salmon.

My heart belongs to Halloween. Pumpkins, cornfields, bright orange sunsets, chilly air, masks, dead leaves on the dirty ground — the whole shebang. As long as I can I remember, I've been obsessed with all things Halloween; to me, it's the most wonderful time of the year. So I'm kind of already in the tank for David Slade's stylish little Halloween treat "Dark Harvest." Adapted from the novel by Norman Partridge, "Dark Harvest" is bloody fun; a treat bag full of Halloween imagery tailor-made to trick people like me into loving it almost unconditionally. However, the closer you look, the more flaws appear — Michael Gilio's script is underbaked, and the film feels like it just sort of runs out of steam instead of actually ending.
But oh, the atmosphere is a delight, and the Halloween vibes are off the charts. Slade and cinematographer Larry Smith overload the movie with...

Exclusive: Hulu is preparing to launch a documentary film about McKamey Manor, widely regarded as the world’s most haunted house. Scroll to the bottom for a trailer.
Cash Cab producer Lion Television US is behind Monster Inside: America’s Most Extreme Haunted House, which will launch next week as part of Hulu’s Halloween Season and follows the story of Russ McKamey, the Navy Veteran turned master of horror who invites adrenaline junkies to the house and puts them through their paces to the extreme.
McKamey opened the manor to satiate his love of Halloween but it grew in popularity and obtained a social media profile, as the owner gained notoriety. It has, however, attracted controversy, with one participant saying she repeated her safeword for several minutes before employees stopped torturing her, while the police have been called to the manor on several occasions by locals.

"I'm emotionally exhausted." That's what Jonathan Van Ness - activist and beloved star of the Netflix show "Queer Eye" - said to actor and "Armchair Expert" podcast host Dax Shepard last week. And it was a sentiment that's continued to resonate among the LGBTQ+ community since.
During a Sept. 25 interview with Van Ness on his podcast, Shepard, of "Parenthood" fame, told Van Ness he supports almost all trans rights. But he also argued whether trans women should be able to compete in sports against cis women and said people have real concerns about certain trans rights, including whether youths should be allowed to transition.
After citing studies demonstrating that trans people are not dominating women's sports, don't have unfair advantages due to their biology, and arguing that trans people are being used as a scapegoat by conservatives, Van Ness was eventually moved to tears.

In the most recent episode of Dax Shepard’s podcast “Armchair Expert,” Jonathan Van Ness broke down in tears while defending the rights of transgender kids.
Shepard and Van Ness engaged in a light-hearted conversation about a range of topics before they began talking about The New York Times. When Van Ness said the publication should not be considered left-leaning, Shepard responded with, “It absolutely is.” Van Ness then said the publication shares anti-trans content.
After the two went back and forth on the topic, Shepard said, “Some people are very uncomfortable about teenagers transitioning. They’re challenging that. How do we know that the person’s not gonna change their mind?”
“To even question it makes you an enemy. I don’t think that’s the way forward,” Shepard continued before prompting Van Ness to offer a rebuttal.
Van Ness said it felt like they were talking to their dad.

When it comes to keeping your pregnancy out of the public eye, Ashley Olsen could teach a master class.
The former child star-turned-fashionista was back in the headlines on Monday when it was revealed she and husband Louis Eisner had welcomed their first child together — and reportedly months ago at that. She gave birth to a baby boy named Otto earlier this summer, a source told Et. The news was doubly surprising considering fans did not know the Row co-founder was expecting.
According to a source, even some of Ashley’s friends were out of the loop. “She kept her pregnancy secret from a lot of friends and colleagues,” the source said. “Only a small circle knew.”
As for how she pulled it off, the source said that the new mom’s signature oversized outfits helped, as did the fact that the couple has been spending a lot of time in the Hamptons.

It goes without saying that Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard have an utterly wonderful romance. Ever since they began dating in 2007, the couple has won hearts over with their "aw"-inducing moments and sweet comments about one another. Whether it be in interviews, magazines, or on social media, these two are constantly gushing about one another, further solidifying their status as one of Hollywood's cutest couples.
Part of their charm is their sense of humor, which has caused some misunderstandings over the years - namely, the misconception that they're swingers. In 1957, Elvis Presley began working with Michael Curtiz, the esteemed director of Casablanca. At this point, Curtiz was an Academy Award-winning director, and Elvis was primarily a musician with only three films on his acting resume. Curtiz fully expected to dislike him. When they began working together, though, the director found that he liked Elvis far more than he had anticipated.

Kristen Bell shared her experience staying at Boston Logan International Airport on Wednesday. The actress, her husband Dax Shepard and their young daughters, ages 8 and 10, were “stranded” at the airport for nine hours because of flight delays.
The star shared on her Instagram that her family initially tried to pass the time by playing card games on the floor, but the delay was extended, forcing them to stay overnight in the city. The group later found out that there were no available hotels within 50 miles, leading them to decide to camp out at the terminal.
“We made quite a home for ourselves here,” Bell joked on social media, sharing a picture of herself with a toothbrush in her mouth.
But they were then kicked out of the airport for sleeping on the floor. Shepard revealed in his own Instagram video that the couple had spent $600 on DIY beds, sleeping supplies and snacks.

In the wake of TV producer Bill Geddie’s death, “The View” co-host Whoopi Goldberg has opened up about what has kept her on the daytime talk show for the past 16 years.
During the ABC series’ tribute to its late executive producer, Goldberg revealed that she first met Barbara Walters and her longtime producer once when the two were driving through Malibu for the series, “Barbara Walters’ 10 Most Fascinating People.” Soon after, Goldberg, Walters and Geddie became friends. It’s through that friendship that the co-creators of “The View” first offered Goldberg her current hosting gig.
