Anyone who has ever seen “The Music Man” knows act 1 ends with the citizens of River City, Iowa anticipating and then celebrating in song the arrival of the Wells Fargo wagon, which is bringing to town musical instruments for the kids that Professor Harold Hill has conned their parents into buying. After the townspeople have sung two verses expressing their excitement, Winthrop Paroo, the younger brother of the show’s heroine, Marian Paroo, steps forward and sings a third verse of the song. The audience knows that Winthrop has a lisp which has made him hesitant to talk, but here he is so joyful, that he is sufficiently unselfconscious to express himself in song. As...

This year’s Oscars telecast incorporated reunions of cast members from classic movies such as “The Godfather,” “Pulp Fiction,” and “Juno.” Last year’s Tony Awards actually did something similar, bringing together cast members from different Broadway classics such as “Hairspray,” “Ragtime,” “Rent,” and “Wicked” for performances as the industry was fighting to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic. Since the Tonys will be presenting their landmark 75th annual ceremony this year, I think it would be even more fitting if they reunite more co-stars from Broadway classics of yesteryear to perform or even present awards. Here are some suggestions. Vote in our poll at the bottom of this post to let us know which you’d most like to see.

Arguably the biggest power couple in showbiz, Beyonce and Jay-Z, are nominated for Best Original Song at this year’s Critics Choice Movie Awards … but they’re nominated against each other for different projects. Which one of them do you think has the better chance of winning? And might they have a rematch at the Oscars?
Beyonce is nominated for “Be Alive,” her original song from “King Richard” which she co-wrote and co-produced with Dixson. It’s not her first bid from the Critics Choice Awards. She actually won this category for “Listen” from “Dreamgirls” (2006). That song was also nominated at the Oscars, but the motion picture academy disqualified her as a songwriter as they only allowed a maximum of three writers to be recognized: Henry Krieger, Scott Cutler, and Anne Preven, with Beyonce being the unlucky fourth. She made another play for awards recognition with “Spirit” from the photo-realistic...

Beyonce has 23 Grammys (and four more nominations there this year), but she won’t be coming for Oscar next. She co-wrote the original song “Spirit” for the live-action version of “The Lion King.” It would’ve been a moment of redemption after she was disqualified for her songwriting contribution to “Dreamgirls” 13 years ago. But it wasn’t meant to be. She made the shortlist, but missed the cut when the motion picture academy announced its final nominees. Check out of this year’s contenders in all 24 categories here.

This wasn’t Beyonce’s first close call at the Oscars. She co-wrote the song “Listen” from 2006’s big-screen adaptation of “Dreamgirls,” which she also starred in. A brand new, CGI version of “The Lion King” opened on July 19 featuring Beyonce as the voice of Nala, but she didn’t just contribute her voice acting to the film. She also produced and curated the soundtrack album “The Lion King: The Gift” and co-wrote and performed a new song, “Spirit.” Will she get Oscar’s attention? Most of our readers think she’ll be nominated for Best Original Song, but not everyone thinks she’ll win. Scroll down to see our complete poll results at the bottom of this post.
A plurality of respondents (46%) think Beyonce will win for “Spirit,” which she co-wrote with Ilya Salmanzadeh and Labrinth. Another 36% think she’ll be nominated, but not win, which means that a vast majority (82%) are betting on her to at least make the cut, which leaves only 18% who think Queen Bey will be snubbed entirely.

Beyonce has 23 Grammys, but she may be coming for Oscar next. She co-wrote the original song “Spirit” for the live-action version of “The Lion King”; the song dropped on July 10 in advance of the film’s opening on July 19. Do you think it’ll cross that off her Egot bucket list? It would be a moment of redemption after she was disqualified for her songwriting contribution to “Dreamgirls” 13 years ago. Listen to “Spirit” above.
Written by Ilya Salmanzadeh and Labrinth along with Beyonce, the song will be featured in the film as well as on “The Lion King: The Gift,” a compilation album produced and curated by Beyonce that will include the work of African artists and producers. Salmanzadeh has numerous songwriting credits for a variety of artists, including Ellie Goulding (“Love Me Like You Do”), Taylor Swift (“End Game”) and Ariana Grande. Labrinth, meanwhile, recently released “LSD,” a collaboration album with Sia and Diplo.

Lady Gaga can’t be in two places at once, especially two awards shows at two different sides of the pond this Sunday: the Grammys in Los Angeles and the BAFTAs in London.
We hear that Gaga will be performing at the Grammys where she is nominated for five awards, four for “Shallow” from A Star Is Born: record of the year, song of the year, best pop duo/group (with Bradley Cooper) performance and best song written for visual media. Her fifth Grammy nom is in the best pop solo performance category for her piano version of “Joanne”.
It would come as no surprise if she sings “Shallow” this Sunday. When the song “Listen” from 2007’s Dreamgirls was up for an Oscar nom, Beyonce took the opportunity to perform that song at the Grammys (the track was written by Henry Krieger and Scott Cutler with lyrics by Anne Preven).

Channing Tatum makes his Coen Brothers debut in the new comedy Hail, Caesar!, and hopefully it's not his last collaboration with the filmmakers. Especially if they let him keep doing what he does best: dance. In his first scene in the movie, Tatum taps his way through one of three big musical numbers that pay homage to the Golden Age of Hollywood. He also sings -- yes, it's really him -- as an actor named Burt Gurney playing a sailor in a movie-within-the-movie. The tune is called "No Dame," and it's an original by Henry Krieger and Willie Reale of Dreamgirls acclaim. The number recalls such classics as 1945's Anchors Aweigh and 1949's On the Town, both of which star Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra as crooning seamen. But "No Dame"...
