The leadership of the Boston Celtics is addressing the media in wake of the controversy surrounding the team's head coach, Ime Udoka. One day after the organization announced Udoka was suspended as head coach of the basketball team for violating team policies, Brad Stevens, president of basketball operations for the Celtics, and Wyc Grousbeck, co-owner of the team, spoke directly to the media to clear up speculation regarding the incident. During the Sept. 23 press conference, Grousbeck said that when the team learned about Udoka's "potential situation," they brought in a respected law firm to conduct an investigation. He noted that the firm's probe...

Twisting the Knife: Four Films by Claude Chabrol will be available on Blu-ray April 26th from Arrow Video
For five decades Claude Chabrol navigated the unpredictable waters of Cinema, leaving in his wake fifty-five feature films that remain among the most quietly devastating genre movies ever made.
The Swindle sees Chabrol at perhaps his most playful as a pair of scam artists, Isabelle Huppert and Michel Serrault, get in over their heads. But who is scamming who and who do you trust in a life built on so many lies? The murder of a 10-year-old girl sparks rumors and gossip in The Color of Lies, as suspicion falls on René (Jacques Gamblin) the dour once famous painter, now art teacher, who was the last person to see her alive.

Updated: Less than a week after his team’s games were pulled from Tencent-run streaming platforms in China over his criticism of the country’s treatment of Tibetans, Boston Celtics Center Enes Kanter upped the ante, calling out the country and Nike over treatment of ethnic minority Uigher workers in factories there.
“Dear @Nike,” tweeted Kanter today, “Stop the modern day Slavery, now!!!”
The Washington Post published an exposé last year documenting what appeared to be forced labor conditions among Uigher workers at one Chinese factory that supplies the sneaker giant. Nike shoes are, of course, worn by most NBA players in every game. Nike also supplies the league’s uniforms and provides its top stars with massively lucrative shoe contracts.
Nike told the post of the Uigher report last year that “we respect human rights in our extended value chain, and always strive to conduct business ethically and responsibly.

Arrow has released an interesting time capsule of a boxed set that features early work by director Brian De Palma and starring a very young Robert De Niro before either of them were significant names in the motion picture industry. The films are The Wedding Party, Greetings (1968), and Hi, Mom! (1970).
De Palma had embarked on a film career in the very early 1960s when he was a student at various institutions. While at Sarah Lawrence College in New York, he collaborated with then-theatre-professor Wilford Leach and Cynthia Munroe (who provided much of the script and funding) to make a feature entitled The Wedding Party. Most accounts (including IMDb) state that the movie was made in 1963; however, an essay by Brad Stevens in the accompanying Blu-ray booklet claims that the film was shot in 1964-65. De Palma & De Niro: The Early Films – Greetings, Hi Mom, and The Wedding Party will be available on Blu-ray from Arrow Video on December 11th
In 1963, Robert De Niro stepped in front of a movie camera for the first time. The resulting film, a low-budget black and white comedy called The Wedding Party, would take three years to complete, and another three years to be released, but it would also establish a hugely important working relationship for the aspiring actor. One of the filmmakers, long before he became synonymous with suspense thanks to Carrie, Dressed to Kill and other classics, was Brian De Palma. He and De Niro would team up again in the next few years for two more comedies, both with a countercultural bent.

During game 3 of the Boston Celtics vs. Philadelphia 76ers, which was broadcast on ESPN and generated 80,746 Emotional Reactions (ERs), Celtics coach Brad Stevens caught viewers’ attention with several smart time-out calls that helped his team triumph over Philly. Fans showered him with praise and didn’t hesitate to call him a genius.

NBC’s broadcast of the 144th Kentucky Derby resulted in 40,835 ERs and, unsurprisingly, its champion Justify was the most-mentioned horse of the day. Before Saturday, he had only competed in three races and some had wondered if he had what it takes. In a word: yes. They tapped out congratulatory messages as he emerged victorious, with some viewers also tipping their fancy hats to his Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert and jockey Mike Smith.

The most recent episode of “Saturday Night Live” on NBC (36,159 ERs) had Donald Glover as the host and musical guest (performing as Childish Gambino), and predictably he drove a ton of conversation. Viewers expressed undying love for the actor/musician, commenting on everything from his creative genius to his (attractive) looks. It’s worth noting that while Glover performed his new song “This Is America” on “SNL,” the explosive music video for that track was also posted on YouTube — as has since prompted an avalanche of discussion.

Aooowww — Woo! Jack Nicholson summons his inner dog — and dons the makeup and scary contact lenses — to go the Larry Talbot route. Unfortunately, his moon-howling nighttime life isn’t as interesting as the dog-eat-dog infighting in the publishing house where he works – where feral instincts and sharp lupine senses are a major aid to ‘getting a leg up’ on the competition. I know, cheap metaphors are the ruin of promising writers.

Although François Truffaut has written that the New Wave began “thanks to Jacquette Rivette,” the films of this masterful French director are not well known. Rivette, like his “Cahiers du Cinéma” colleagues Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard, Claude Chabrol and Éric Rohmer, did graduate to filmmaking but, like Rohmer, was something of a late bloomer as a director.
In 1969, he directed the 4-hour L’amour fou (1969), the now legendary 13-hour Out 1 (1971) (made for French TV in 1970 but never broadcast; edited to a 4-hour feature and retitled Out 1: Spectre (1972)), and the 3-hour Celine and Julie Go Boating (1974), his most entertaining and widely seen picture. In these three films, Rivette began to construct what has come to be called his “House of Fiction”–an enigmatic filmmaking style involving improvisation, ellipsis and considerable narrative experimentation.
Celine and Julie Go Boating
In 1975, Jacques Rivette reunited with Out 1 producer Stéphane Tchal Gadjieff with the idea of a four-film cycle.

Just one day after losing his sister in a tragic car crash, NBA star Isaiah Thomas chose to play with the Boston Celtics in their first playoff game. Although he was clearly devastated, sobbing on the bench before the game, Thomas had a longtime friend and teammate supporting him.
Fellow Celtics player Avery Bradley was spotted putting his arm around the 28-year-old point guard as he cried during the pregame shoot around. The two athletes grew up together in Tacoma, Washington, before becoming NBA teammates.

It’s icky, drippy and grindingly gross — and will make your forehead itch — but Abel Ferrara’s Bowery-set dime store horror opus has withstood the test of time. It’s a decent enough psychodrama, if one can set aside all the psychological-philosophical booshwah that’s leaked into horror criticism. Oops, Savant’s guilty of that too.

Far from a mere ‘video nasty’, Abel Ferrara’s gory gem shatters our complacency and forces us to confront our moral choices
[Warning: contains graphic images]
For many, Abel Ferrara will forever be the master provocateur, synonymous with drugs, booze, and tortured Catholicism, obsessed with documenting man’s existential bad faith and tortured quest for redemption, a la Bad Lieutenant. For certain film scholars however, Ferrara is a kind of Van Gogh, a truly visionary artist whose genius is destined to be ignored in his own lifetime. To understand the esteem in which he is held, we should begin at the beginning. Helpfully, this month Arrow Films presents a rerelease DVD package of The Driller Killer, complete with a newly recorded audio commentary by Ferrara, an in-depth interview conducted by Brad Stevens (author of Abel Ferrara: The Moral Vision), and a visual essay on Ferrara by Alexandra Heller-Nicholas, author of Cultographies: Ms.

I have something of a love hate relationship with The Driller Killer. Depending on my mood I really like it, yet at other times it just doesn’t connect. This may be down to the versions I’ve seen: the cut, the picture quality, etc. With Arrow Video’s latest Blu-ray release though, there are no excuses as to whether I like it or not – it’s time to make a decision!
Abel Ferrara both directs and stars in the story of Reno Miller, the artist struggling to survive in New York City. Failing to make an impact with his art, cracks begin to show in his sanity and a psychotic alter-ego takes over. Attacking vagrants on the streets...

Above: a sultry new poster for Paul Thomas Anderson's Inherent Vice. Dumb and Dumber To has opened to unsurprisingly mixed reviews, but Farrelly brothers champion R. Emmet Sweeney makes a case for the long awaited sequel for Film Comment:
"Dumb and Dumber To is about a deep, abiding friendship that can survive any indignities. After Harry and Lloyd’s journey is over, they’ve tossed away fortunes and frittered away kidneys, but they need each other to survive. As each momentary acquaintance slinks, or runs, away, it’s up to Harry and Lloyd to forget and move on. Or as is the case for Lloyd, to think about ninjas and wake up licking the grill of a big rig. Either way they can’t live without each other. And though they could never admit it, or even form the words in their desiccated cortexes, what they have is something like love.

Zoë Tamerlis has a habit for revenge in Ms. 45.
From the inimitably ferocious New York filmmaker Abel Ferrara (Bad Lieutenant, 4:44 Last Day on Earth) comes his notorious 1981 crime thriller Ms. 45.
The film follows a mute Garment District seamstress played by the late model/actress/musician/screenwriter Zoë Lund (then known, at age 18, as Zoë Tamerlis ) who, after falling victim to multiple unspeakable rapes, unleashes a one-woman homicidal rampage against Gotham’s male population.
A grindhouse favorite that struck a chord with those who grooved on the vigilante aspect of the film in a then crime-ridden New York City, Ms. 45 quickly became a notorious cult favorite, an eye-opening study of a seamy, sticky, pre-Disney-fication Manhattan..
Regarded as a uniquely feminist entry in the urban revenge subgenre, Ms. 45 combines the rampaging angst of Death Wish and...

Drafthouse Films has announced that they will be releasing both The Visitor and Ms. 45 to Blu-ray & DVD in March:
“Drafthouse Films, in conjunction with Cinedigm (Nasdaq: Cidm), will bring two of its recent theatrical success stories to Blu-ray and DVD in restored and remastered editions: the wildly ambitious and neglected sci-fi/horror epic The Visitor and Ms. 45, legendary director Abel Ferrara’s gritty, gore-filled New York revenge thriller. The films will arrive, respectively, on March 4 and on March 25, 2014, with SRPs of $29.95 for Blu-ray and $27.95 for DVD. They come packed with bonus material in both formats.
Incredibly ambitious but derided and largely neglected upon its initial release in 1979, The Visitor is an unforgettable assault on reality, a phantasmagoric sci-fi/horror/action hybrid. From writer-producer Ovidio G. Assonitis (Tentacles) and director/actor/body builder Michael J. Paradise (aka Giulio Paradisi – Fellini’s 8½),the film artfully fuses elements of some of...

The best movie culture writing from around the internet-o-sphere. Just leave a tab open for us, will ya? “A Critical Confusion” –Brad Stevens’ sharp take down of Will Self’s mirror-holding view on the extinction of criticism. Inside, inside baseball. “The Best Man Holiday and the Language of Expectations” — Linda Holmes laments the industry’s continual underestimation of films starring black ensembles and/or made by black filmmakers. It’s time to stop being surprised when they do well. “Here’s How Indie Movie Rental Stores Are Surviving the New Frontier” — Sean Axmaker at Indiewire adds Scarecrow Video to the list of profiles in courage against the backdrop of Blockbuster busting. “The Starving Games is the Worst Hunger Games Spoof Ever: A Liveblog” — Mike Ryan watches the new Friedberg and Seltzer so you don’t have to. I now challenge him to try doing this.

Let me just say that typing this post up has be ecstatic beyond belief. I believe it was my friend Ed Demko, who you may remember from the 42nd Minute segments on the ol’ podcast, who introduced this film to me. The title I saw it under was Angel of Vengeance. It was a French DVD that I had imported as it was the only DVD release of the film. I was blown away by what I saw. It was dark, dirty, unapologetic and seemed to have no “law” to the film. I loved it. Last year, I tried booking the film for our Late Nite Grindhouse program by securing a 35mm print. Sadly, it fell through and I didn’t get to show this little seen classic. Now, those words “little seen” will hopefully be eradicated as celluoid champions Drafthouse Films have picked up the film for an official...
