Ahead of the Channel Premiere of sci-fi drama Extant on Horror Channel, series creator & writer Mickey Fisher reflects on being plucked from relative obscurity, working with Steven Spielberg and hoping for life on Mars…
Did you know from a young age that you wanted to be a writer?
From the time I was maybe five or six years old I wanted to be an actor. Going to see Star Wars is one of my earliest memories, but I didn’t quite understand what I was really watching. At a certain point, someone explained to me that Fonzie wasn’t a real guy, he was an actor pretending to a character on Happy Days, and I thought that sounded like the coolest job in the world. I went to The College Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati to study Musical Theatre, and it wasn’t until I was there that I really started writing.

When Angeline Boulley was working on her young adult fiction debut, Firekeeper’s Daughter, she decided she needed to know how to make meth. “I learned how to make meth from the State Police Academy,” she tells Rolling Stone. “I was able to take a workshop at the Academy and it was about learning how to make math and learning how to identify clandestine meth labs. I was the only non-law enforcement person in that workshop.”

“Reverie” has been canceled by NBC after one season, an individual with knowledge of the decision told TheWrap on Tuesday.
The sci-fi drama’s first — and now only — installment premiered in May and wrapped in August after a 10-episode run. “Reverie” averaged a 0.6 rating in the advertiser-coveted adults 18-49 demographic, making it one of the lowest-rated shows of Summer 2018, tying with “Trial & Error,” “The Last Defense,” “Take Two” and “What Would You Do?” for seventh place on that list.
From Mickey Fisher, the creator of “Extant,” the thriller followed Mara Kint (Sarah Shahi), a former hostage negotiator and expert on human behavior who became a college professor after facing an unimaginable personal tragedy. But when she’s brought in to save ordinary people who have lost themselves in a highly advanced virtual-reality program in which you can literally live your dreams, she finds that in saving others, she may...

NBC has opted not to renew high-concept drama series Reverie for a second season. The news is not a surprise following the series’ low-rated freshman run.
Reverie, starring Sarah Shahi and Dennis Haysbert, premiered on May 30 and averaged 2.1 million viewers in Live+same day, the smallest viewership for an NBC original series this past summer.
From Extant creator Mickey Fisher, thriller Reverie followed Mara Kint (Shahi), a former hostage negotiator and expert on human behavior who became a college professor after facing an unimaginable personal tragedy. But when her former boss, Charlie Ventana (Haysbert), brings her in to save ordinary people who have lost themselves in a highly advanced immersive virtual-reality program in which you can live out your wildest dreams, she finds that in saving others, she may actually have discovered a way to save herself.

Well, that was almost a clean ending.
This season's big bad, Oliver Hill, got handled on Reverie Season 1 Episode 10.
He had been cut down to a ghost in the machine, with his body slowly dying.
The ratings for Reverie make it unlikely to get renewed, despite its likable cast and cutting-edge premise. That's what happens when a show gets launched in the doldrums of late spring/early summer.
But it's hard to say with NBC. This is the network that brought Taken back for an unnecessary second season for some reason, yet canceled the far superior Timeless after its second season.
In other words, don't use logic as a yardstick when it comes to NBC renewals. Maybe Mickey Fisher should have titled his show Chicago Reverie.

Anyway, it appeared that Fisher and the Reverie brain trust had accepted their show's fate, filling the finale with plenty of closure.

Let's call this Touched by a Vr Angel.
A former police negotiator chooses to bring people back to reality on Reverie Season 1 Episode 1.
And maybe, just maybe, she can heal herself as well.
This new drama offers the none-too-subtle message of "Get off your phones and take in the world around you."

Oh, yeah. Reality: let's embrace it.

In the “Black Mirror” episode “Be Right Back,” artist Martha (Hayley Atwell) makes a last-ditch effort to deal with the overwhelming grief of losing her boyfriend Ash (Domhnall Gleeson). After his fatal car accident, Martha uploads all of his social media into an AI that allows it to mimic the way he thinks, speaks, and acts. NBC’s new summer series “Reverie” also allows people to revisit loved ones via their social media footprint, although in a different setting.
While “Black Mirror” brought the AI to life into Martha’s sphere of existence first via text and phone chats and then in a bio-enhanced android, NBC’s series makes the user enter a virtual world for the reunion. Be careful what you wish for. That could certainly be the tagline for Reverie, debuting at 10 p.m. Wednesday, May 30.
The psychological thriller focuses on the Reverie program, which uses a client's social media to create a virtual-reality dream world.
Unfortunately, some prefer the virtual world to reality, and Charlie, head of security for Onira-tech, recruits his former co-worker, Mara Kint, to enter these dream scenarios and entice these clients out before they die in the real world.

There it all was, the raw shaky cam quality of images that showed nothing of the Sunset Boulevard one usually sees in movies, the much talked about acting chops of two first-time actresses that, lo and behold, are transgender women actually playing transgender women. As I sat in awe watching Tangerine, the first movie shot entirely on an iPhone 5s, what I couldn’t shake wasn’t the hype amassed along its festival and awards gala circuits. Thankfully, I realized right away the buzz was well-earned and trained my eye on the cinematic grain instead – it was purposefully tacked on as a tip of the hat to the unwieldy uni-purpose cameras. Yet another filmmaking tool breathing its last.
And why shouldn’t cameras go the way of the dodo, and the celluloid? That’s probably a question better left to the contingent of film buffs that, as their counterparts in the book v.

It's finale time! Here's Holly's review of Extant's last episode...
This review contains spoilers.
1.13 Ascension
I told you not to press the big green button. It paid off! As I said last week, I didn’t really think it mattered what happened in this week’s season finale of Extant, as I and probably a great number of its viewership have disengaged at this point. I was expecting, honestly, a really dissatisfying deus ex machina with little green men or such; what I got instead was actually a really well done finale and just a good hour of TV.
We got a lot of answers, which again, I wasn’t expecting. I’ll start, though, with what we still don’t know - a surprisingly short list. The most glaring absence that I could see was Yasumoto - we didn’t see him at all. Same with Sparks.

Hey, "Extant" peeps. Unfortunately, we have to tell you guys that the fate of your favorite show is very questionable at the moment as CBS has still yet to make a decision to renew it for a new season 2. It turns out that Extant was initially ordered as a "limited series." However, it does have an evolving storyline that could deliver a season 2. The latest renewal reports has creator ,Mickey Fisher, saying he's still waiting to learn Extant‘s fate ahead of September 17th's season finale episode 13. Back on September 4th, Fisher revealed that CBS was seriously considering renewing Extant for a season 2. Then on September 11th, Fisher said CBS probably won't make a decision for a few weeks. So, it sounds like it could be a good while before we find out what they're going to do.

Extant, Season 1, Episode 1, “Re-Entry”
Written by Mickey Fisher
Directed by Allen Coulter
Airs Wednesdays at 9 pm Est on CBS
Science fiction shows on television have always been a tricky proposition. Done effectively, a series can gain a number of fans, many of whom continue to sing the show’s praises long after its end. Done poorly, however, it can become even more incoherent than a non-genre drama. With luminaries such as Star Trek leading the way, this summer CBS tries its hand at the genre with Extant, a science fiction series led by Halle Berry. While the pilot disconcertingly throws a number of potential mysteries into the fray, the series nonetheless shows some promise, and depending on what path it goes down, could develop into a show worth watching.
The show has the potential to build a rich array of characters. From the pilot alone, alongside Molly, there...

The creator of Halle Berry's new Us TV drama Extant has revealed that he was inspired by Doctor Who.
Mickey Fisher - who wrote the Extant pilot - explained that the British sci-fi drama's "great heart" was something he was keen to replicate in his CBS series.
"While I was writing the pilot, because I'm a big Doctor Who fan, I had a Post-it note on the corner of my monitor that said, 'Wwsmd - what would Steven Moffat do?' - because I think he is a great writer." Fisher revealed.
"I would look at that every now and then when I got stuck and I would ask myself that question, 'What would Steven Moffat do?' - and the answer was always that he would just write it better!"
BAFTA-winning writer Moffat has served as Doctor Who's head writer and executive producer since 2009 and recently revealed...
