So You Think You Can Dance premiered on Fox in July 2005. The reality TV dance competition was the brainchild of Simon Fuller and Nigel Lythgoe, producers of American Idol. Throughout its 17 seasons, fans of Sytycd have watched hundreds of contestants cut a rug and leave it all out on the dance floor in hopes of being crowned “America’s favorite dancer” at the end of the competition.
The talent of each Sytycd contestant is analyzed by a panel of two to four permanent judges. Guest judges also join the panel throughout the season, with the panel sometimes ballooning up to twice or more than its normal size for callback episodes or season finales. Let’s look at all of the permanent judges on So You Think You Can Dance over the years.

Against all odds, So You Think You Can Dance will return for Season 17… but it will do so without co-creator Nigel Lythgoe at the judges’ dais.
In a tweet on Friday, Lythgoe — who has served as a judge on every season of the Fox competition series thus far — alleged that he has not been invited to fill that role for the show’s recently announced 17th cycle.

Derek Hough is one of the most celebrated choreographers in Emmy history, and this year he picked up not one but two more nominations. Can he win again? He has two trophies on his mantel already, and to date no one has ever taken home more than three. Scroll down to watch his nominated routines at the bottom of this post.
One of Hough’s nominations is for a pair of exhibition routines he choreographed for “Dancing with the Stars” last fall: a paso doble to “Uccen” and a tap dance to “Let’s Fall in Love for the Night.” He didn’t compete for the Mirror Ball Trophy this past season, but joined as a full-time judge after British panelist Len Goodman was unable to travel back to the US due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Winning Emmys is old hat for the Fox competition series “So You Think You Can Dance,” but it’s a brand new experience for Al Blackstone, who claimed Best Choreography for Variety or Reality Programming at the Creative Arts Awards on Saturday night, September 19. “So You Think You Can Dance” contestant-turned-choreographer Travis Wall earned his 10th Emmy nomination this year for the Fox competition series. That puts him within striking distance of not one but two Emmy records. His nominated “Sign of the Times” routine tackled America’s gun violence epidemic in emotional fashion. Watch it above.

Before this year’s contenders were announced, Wall had been tied with Derek Hough as the second most nominated choreographer in Emmy history at nine apiece. Now Wall stands alone in second place in the record books. Only one other person has been nominated in this category more times: the legendary Debbie Allen with 11 bids. So Wall just needs one more to share her all-time record.
But that’s not all.

‘Feel the Beat’s’ Wolfgang Novogratz with Elissa Down.
Elissa Down’s teen dance movie Feel the Beat premieres worldwide on Netflix this week. Sofia Carson stars as April, a self-centred dancer who, after blowing a Broadway audition, reluctantly returns home and agrees to coach a squad of young misfits for a big competition.
The director tells If how she landed her first Netflix gig, which was produced by What Women Want’s Susan Cartsonis; collaborating with fellow Aussies, composer Michael Yezerski and editor Jane Moran; and how her career has ebbed and flowed since her debut film The Black Balloon.
Q: How did you get the gig?

“So You Think You Can Dance” has won Best Choreography at the Emmys 11 times, far more than any other program in history. Two of those awards went to Travis Wall, who is nominated again this year for the ninth time. If he wins his third prize, he’ll tie the all-time record for the most awards won by an individual in this category. And one of his nominated routines, “It Takes a Lot to Know a Man,” was called a “masterpiece” by “Sytycd” judges, so it might be tough to beat. Watch it above.
Performed last summer by “Sytycd” contestant Darius Hickman and all-star Taylor Sieve, the contemporary routine was inspired by Wall’s experience of coming out as gay and the bullying he and others face as a result. Hickman and Sieve swapped traditional gender roles in the routine, which judge Twitch called “a work of art” and Mary Murphy...

Jensen Arnold fell just short on “So You Think You Can Dance,” finishing in second place behind winner Hannahlei Cabanilla in what host Cat Deeley said was the closest final vote in the show’s history. So maybe Mandy Moore will let Arnold keep her Emmy instead.

“It was a week after Charlottesville and there was a lot of angst in the studio with the dancers and the producers,” explains Travis Wall about the “Strange Fruit” routine he choreographed last summer on “So You Think You Can Dance.” “I felt helpless in a way where I wanted to speak louder than I possibly could.” Now he’s nominated for Best Choreography at the Emmys for the eighth year in a row, for that routine as well as for “Change is Everything,” a duet between “Sytycd” all-star Robert Roldan and season 14 contestant Taylor Sieve. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. Well, a few things, maybe.
It’s not at all hard to understand why Harvey Weinstein turned to Diane Paulus to overhaul Finding Neverland, the musical based on Miramax’s 2004 movie starring Johnny Depp as Peter Pan creator J.M Barrie. Paulus brings a broad catholicity of taste to her work as artistic director of the non-profit American Repertory Theatre, and that wide-ranging sensibility has led to her own souped-up, physically dazzling revivals of Hair and Pippin, both of which moved to Broadway.
When a 2012 tryout in Leicester, England under the leadership of Rob Ashford was met with yawns, Weinstein sent Finding Neverland back to the drawing board. In addition to hiring Paulus, he replaced Allan Knee (who wrote The Man Who Was Peter Pan, the basis for the film) with James Graham as book writer. U.K. pop-music specialists Gary Barlow...

The Finding Neverland musical will open on Broadway next year.
The stage version of Johnny Depp and Kate WInslet's 2004 film will open at an unspecified theatre in March, according to The New York Times.
Rick Miramontez, a spokesperson for the show's producer Harvey Weinstein, confirmed the transfer on Wednesday (August 13).
Miramontez added that the show will run at a theatre owned by the Nederlander Organisation but refused to specify which one at this stage.
The Broadway production will follow a tryout production of the musical, which is currently running in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Finding Neverland follows Jm Barrie in the early 20th century as he struggles to find success as a playwright, before meeting a family that inspires him to write Peter Pan.
Finding Neverland features a score written by Take That star Gary Barlow and songwriter Elliot Kennedy. Mia Michaels has worked on contemporary choreography for the musical.

Last season, because of declining ratings, Fox continued airing So You Think You Can Dance just once a week but the ratings continued to fall. Will they continue to decline or start to climb? Could it be cancelled this time or will it be renewed for a 12th season?
Hosted by Cat Deeley, So You Think You Can Dance is a competition that pits dancers of various backgrounds against one another to become "America's Favorite Dancer." Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy have returned as the permanent judges, often sharing the table with guests like Adam Shankman, Mia Michaels, Jenna Dewan-Tatum, Wayne Brady, Jenna Elfman, and Christina Applegate.
The higher a show's ratings (particularly the 18-49 demo), the better its chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available -- typically the following morning, around 11:30am Est/8:30am Pst. Refresh to see...

Spoiler ahead. Two more dancers have left the competition after the Tuesday, Aug. 20 performance show, which featured host Cat Deeley dressed as a fresh-out-of-the-shower mascara zombie from hell and the season 10 finalists paired up with eight of the most beloved So You Think You Can Dance All-Stars. I’ll post my full recap of tonight’s performances later on (update: here it is!); in the meantime, discuss!
Jenna Johnson and Tucker Knox have been eliminated.
Agggghhh. The former partners (pre-All-Star episodes this season) just told Cat Deeley their favorite parts of the competition were meeting each other and becoming best friends!

We’ve got questions, and you’ve (maybe) got answers! With another week of TV gone by, we’re lobbing queries left and right about shows including The Killing, The Newsroom, The Fosters and Suits!
1 | You kinda wanted The Killing‘s Holder and Linden to kiss there on the sofa, didn’t you? Also, was there any way to predict that malevolent little twist of having Nicholas Lea’s supportive, deeply religious death-row inmate Dale turn out to be the nastiest little sociopath the show has ever seen?
2 | In Falling Skies‘ highly entertaining “flashback-but-not” sequence, who was your favorite out-of-place character?...

Can a single guest judge — bland as wilted leaf of iceberg lettuce, unqualified as a 2-year-old gleefully clutching the wheel of an 18-wheeler — ruin an entire two-hour telecast of an Emmy-nominated reality competition series? Maybe not entirely.
But if this week’s installment of So You Think You Can Dance was an Olympic swimmer, then Canadian songbird Carly Rae Jepsen was like a lead weight around each leg, her every mumbled utterance, her repeated (and meaningless) recitation of the word “incredible” leaving the telecast sputtering and gasping for a life line.

As always, contemporary dancers are dominant in the "So You Think You Can Dance" Top 20. Seven of them made the cut -- Makenzie Dustman, Jasmine Harper, Tucker Knox, Nico Greetham, Carlos Garland, Hayley Erbert and Malece Miller.
After talking to each of the dancers right after they learned they had made the show, meet each contemporary hopeful here.
Makenzie Dustman
How do you feel, making it into the Top 20?
Makenzie Dustman: "I feel like I'm living a dream life right now. I mean, we just found out we made Top 20 yesterday, and it still does not feel real. Like, at all. I'm in shock but living the dream life!"
Can you describe what Vegas Week was like for you?
Makenzie Dustman: "Vegas Week was good. I got through the rounds pretty easily, I had amazing partners. Probably my lowest point was Group Round. That was really tough, staying up all night.

The dancers try their hardest, but choreographer Sonya Tayeh has some words of encouragement: Try harder or die.
So You Think You Can Dance‘s Vegas rounds give us roughly the same amount of drama as American Idol‘s Hollywood week, but the stakes are actually higher because everyone in Vegas is extraordinary in at least one form of dance. On Idol, there’s always a chance some moron who squawked an Ok version of Jason Mraz’s “I’m Yours” won a ticket to Hollywood, you know? On Sytycd, everyone is an astounding talent — which is why it’s sort of disappointing when unqualified guest judges like Hannah Simone from New Girl and Jason Derulo of “JaSON DeruloooOOooOO” fame get a say in the proceedings. Simone was honestly introduced as “a dance enthusiast.” It would’ve been more bad-ass if she were “an anti-dance curmudgeon” or something more threatening.

Get on your dancing shoes, the 10th season of So You Think You Can Dance will premiere Tuesday May 14 at 8 p.m. on Fox.
Guest judges for the audition rounds will include Minnie Driver, Stephen “tWitch” Boss, and Adam Shankman.
And if you want to show the world you can shake what your mama gave you, there are still two more auditions in Memphis on March 14 and in Los Angeles on March 22. For added incentive, Jesse Tyler Ferguson will be the guest judge in Los Angeles, Wayne Brady in Memphis.
Who’s excited to see what Mary Murphy does next?...

Marriage equality has come to Maine, with the first couples being able to tie the knot on the spot as the state has no waiting period. Congratulations!
As most of us wait for Congress to avert the fiscal cliff they created that will raise most of our taxes $2,000/year, President Obama has signed an executive order giving a 0.5% raise to most federal workers, including Congress, who will see about $900 extra in their pockets next year.
I've never been much of a gym person until the past year, and now I'm an addict. But I've never experienced the gym in January when everyone tries out a resolution to get fit and things get crowded, and if this article is to believed, funny.
Fox News finds the media's support of marriage equality to be among the 10 Most Embarrassing Examples of Media Coverage in 2012. "Newsies looked like an aging cast of “Glee,” with...

So You Think You Can Dance‘s Season 9 co-champion Eliana Girard says that her decision to quit a steady job as an aerialist with Cirque du Soleil and audition for a reality competition was the best choice she’s ever made, but by far the scariest. “I had been with Cirque for almost three years, and it was amazing because it felt like home. I had my friends. I had a steady income,” she says. “But as an artist I felt really stifled, and I felt like I wasn’t improving or growing.”

Spoiler Alert: One guy and one girl have been named Ameriker’s Favourite Dance-ahs following a two-hour finale featuring guest performances by The Dragon House and Carly Rae Jespen, who sang “The Kiss.” The judges all chose a favorite routine for the dancers to perform again, and then each of the final four chose a reprise as well. A dramatic “hip-hop card trick” routine featuring finalist Cyrus, all-stars tWitch and Comfort, and choreographer Christopher Scott was the night’s standout, though I’m pretty sure no one was complaining about getting to see some phenomenal routines — like Eliana and Alex...

So You Think You Can Dance's ninth season crackled with enough raw talent and passion that we could forgive the presence (and long-windedness) of such uninformed guest judges as Zooey Deschanel and Christina Applegate. Truthtfully, we witnessed a staggering amount of fabulous dances this season, and it's hard to narrow down a top 25, let alone a top 10. Fortunately, I've tried. Here are my picks for the ten best routines of the season.
10. Eliana and Alex shoot each other down.
Did Eliana and Alex sell this? Absolutely. Was the piece unforgettable? Indeed. But while Nancy Sinatra's "Bang Bang" set the tone perfectly for this stark routine, I have to point out that the music and shock red lighting design were slightly more impressive than the actual choreography here. The images in this dance are burned into my brain, and for that reason it earns a spot on my list,...

Everything’s over except next Tuesday’s results-show spectacular on Season 9 of So You Think You Can Dance. And to celebrate another year of gorgeous contemporary, fleet-footed ballroom, and ratchet (I think/hope I used that adjective correctly) hip-hop, we’ve put together a gallery of the 15 best performances from the past eight weeks of competitive performance telecasts.
To simplify the process, we included only those routines performed by two people — so no solos (sorry, Chehon!) and no group numbers (like Mia Michaels’ ropes-from-the-ceiling piece). Click through the gallery below, then hit the comments to tell us if there are any glaring omissions,...

Ooh, I love Final Four night! The guy-guy and girl-girl numbers are always a blast, and a great chance for a side-by-side comparison before our final votes. Tonight we got a sexy burlesque featuring Tiffany, Eliana, and a great big pole that reminded Nigel Lythgoe of an outing he’d had with Randy Jackson. *Tmi, Nigel.* Meanwhile, Cyrus and Chehon and their seemingly painted-on torsos rippled their way through a difficult Sonya Tayeh routine filled with lifts. Mary Murphy is blogging for EW.com this season! Catch up with her and her thoughts on the most recent episodes of So You Think You Can Dance.
What an exciting night of dance! Tension ran high on the judging panel and in the audience as to who would make our finale. The pressure is off the judges because America voted for the top six tonight, and for who would be in the finale. We had absolutely no say, so I found it odd today that my Twitter was so abuzz with comments about how “we” could possibly let a certain dancer leave the show!

Silent screams pierced the So You Think You Can Dance stage this week, and it had nothing to do with Mary Murphy’s voice giving out during a Hot Tamale Train boarding call, or young female dancers responding to lascivious feedback from Nigel Lythgoe.

Like American Idol, every season of So You Think You Can Dance crescendoes to an exhausting and thrilling moment, that week when you realize you're watching superfly talents attempt to sustain superflyness for the eighth or ninth week in a row. It's bracing. It's awesome. But frankly, it's almost a little too grueling in a They Shoot Horses, Don't They? way. (Expect that '69 gem in our Best Movie Ever? section sometime soon.) And here we are, right in the thick of the glorious hell just a week from the finale -- or, as I heard Cat Deeley pronounce it this week, finarwley.
We have six combatants left, six varied levels of eye-popping skill, and another so-so appearance from guest judge Christina Applegate, whose critiques ranged from direct and insightful ("There's a picture in every moment you dance," she said sagely to Eliana) to empty veneration ("Beautiful," she said to.

Jesse Tyler Ferguson — “weird and creepy and not a stalker,” he swears — just loves to come back and be a guest judge on So You Think You Can Dance. The Modern Family star invented the Hot Jalapeno Bus (a new friend for Mary Murphy’s Hot Tamale Train), and poignantly called out Will’s personal-story junket (“Dance saved my life…”) as a reason why arts programs are so important to schools. He is, quite simply, the best.
