Black Canadian content creators attending the inaugural Black Screen Office Symposium in Toronto on Tuesday showed both excitement and anxiety as the global entertainment business model faces unprecedented disruption.
Just as an industry reckoning after the murder of George Floyd led to more Black representation among Canadian industry gatekeepers and more direct federal government investment in Black creators, the impact of Hollywood shooting fewer originals and locally commissioned series in Canada, and with lower production budgets, is rippling across the business.
The impact on local broadcasters shrinking their local content slates as Canadians increasingly shift to streaming platforms and away from traditional cable TV subscriptions also plays a part as a weak advertising market undercuts overall linear TV revenues and artificial intelligence poses an existential threat everywhere.

As global streamers like Netflix and Amazon Prime finally make inroads in Africa, Nigerian-Canadian filmmaker Lonzo Nzekwe is enjoying his moment in the sun at the Toronto Film Festival.
CAA Media Finance boarded Nzekwe’s Nigeria-set Canadian revenge thriller Orah with worldwide representation, excluding Canada, just before the feature that stars Star Trek: Discovery actor Oyin Oladejo in the titular role had a prestigious TIFF market screening on Monday night as part of the festival’s expanded Industry Selects program.
The film, with a script 12 years in the making and shot in Canada and Nigeria, marks a triumph for Nzekwe, who like fellow black Canadian filmmakers long had his work neglected, ignored or dismissed before a Canadian industry reckoning after the murder of George Floyd finally diverted meaningful local financing to underrepresented creators.

When CBC drama “Diggstown” hit Canadian airwaves in 2019, star Vinessa Antoine became the first Black Canadian woman to lead a prime-time drama on network television. And while plenty of ink was spilled over that stat at the beginning, when the Floyd Kane-created series wraps its fourth and final season on Nov. 16, it does so not with a media bang, but a whimper.
So what happened?
“Diggstown” revolves around a corporate lawyer named Marcie Diggs (Antoine) who begins working at a legal-aid office after her aunt takes her own life. Over its 26-episode run, the drama tackled real inequities that exist in the Canadian legal system as well as sensitive themes including mental health in the Black community, Indian Day Schools, queer rights and queer representation. For the first three seasons, those stories took place in North Preston, Nova Scotia, home to Canada’s largest Black community by population — one...

The fourth and final season of CBC drama “Diggstown” is right around the corner, and on Tuesday, Oct. 11 a new trailer for the upcoming season dropped to bring viewers a first look at how the journey of crusading lawyer Marcie Diggs (Vinessa Antoine) will conclude.
In the six-episode final season, Marcie is struggling mentally and physically after last season’s shooting, facing threats and defections from all sides. “As she grapples with one crisis to the next, a former ally’s actions threaten to spell the end of Marcie Diggs & Associates,” notes the synopsis, which indicates themes in the final season will be mental health, the plight of migrant workers, the treatment of a pregnant trans man within the healthcare system, sterilization of Black women and Indian Day School abuse.

Fox has picked up Canadian legal drama “Diggstown” from Entertainment One.
Created by Floyd Kane, and starring Vinessa Antoine, the series from Canadian public broadcaster CBC follows Marcie Diggs (Antoine), a star corporate lawyer who reconsiders her priorities and moves to work in a legal-aid office after her aunt commits suicide following the pressures of a malicious prosecution. Among a new group of ragtag lawyers, Marcie is driven by one thing: to never again allow innocent lives to be destroyed by the justice system.
Fox has swooped for seasons 1 and 2 of the drama. The acquisition marks the latest Canadian pick-up by a U.S. broadcaster — a trend that has grown in popularity in the last year as the Covid-19 crisis has stunted production Stateside but has had less of an impact north of the border.

Canadian legal drama series Burden of Truth and Diggstown will be back for another go-round.
CBC has renewed Burden of Truth for a fourth season, with production to begin in Winnipeg, Manitoba, later this summer. Diggstown has been renewed for a third season with shooting set to begin in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in early 2021.
“Both Burden of Truth and Diggstown look at the legal world through a distinct lens by highlighting systemic corruption, injustice and discrimination in the legal system, including anti-Indigenous and anti-Black racism,” said Sally Catto, General Manager of Entertainment, Factual & Sports at CBC. “These two series offer a unique take on the traditional crime procedural, and continue to engage audiences across the country each season with strong performances and original storylines.”

The film written by Derosier centres on Angelique, a young Anishinaabe woman who embarks on a journey with her voyageur husband Charlie, despite the warnings of her grandmother, Green Thunderbird.
When they are abandoned on a deserted island before a harsh winter, Angelique finds her faith tested as she fights starvation, the elements and a treacherous Lake Superior.
