A big winner at the Astaire Awards this year was Broadway smash “Motown,” which took home honors for choreographers Patricia Wilcox and Warren Adams (they tied with “Pippin” choreographer Chet Walker) and performer Eric Lajuan Summers, who received the award for outstanding male dancer in a Broadway show. A jukebox musical of Motown hits that range from “Dancing in the Street” to “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” “Motown” wouldn’t seem to need much in the way of choreography given that Diana Ross and the Supremes and the rest of the record label artists already created the steps. Not so, according to Wilcox. “There are certain iconic moves,” she says. For instance, you can’t have someone singing “Stop! In the Name of Love” without the hand in the air. “I think if you put in one of those iconic moves for those groups, then you can essentially do...

The revival of "Pippin" is a celebration of everything right about musical theater -- fabulous choreography, a true sense of fun, Patina Miller and acrobats. And it's easy to see why this came in with 10 Tony nominations, just after "Kinky Boots' with 13, and "Matilda" with 12.
"Pippin" has been updated since the show ruled on Broadway for five years in the 1970s, and made Ben Vereen a star. Now Miller plays the role Vereen had, as Leading Player, justifiably earning her second Tony nomination. She's the circus ringleader, narrator and star. Pippin, son of Charlemagne, who is called Charles in this, is on a quest to find meaning in life. He's educated, sweet and earnest. Here, Matthew James Thomas (Broadway's "Spiderman") plays the title role.
Stephen Schwartz' music and lyrics, Roger O. Hirson's book, Diane Paulus' direction and Chet Walker's choreography are flawless. Set under a big top,...

The 2013 Tony Award nominations were announced this morning by actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson and five-time nominated Broadway regular Sutton Foster.
The musical "Kinky Boots" nabbed the most nominations with a total of 13 Tony nods, making the fetish footwear-themed production this year's leading favorite. Its chief rival -- the kid-friendly "Matilda" -- followed close behind with a respectable 12. In the play category, the "Golden Boy" revival secured the highest number of mentions with a total of eight nominations, while Nora Ephron's "Lucky Guy" starring Tom Hanks earned six.
Big names in the acting nominations department included Hanks, Nathan Lane, Laurie Metcalf and Cicely Tyson. Notably missing were Bette Midler, Jessica Chastain, Scarlett Johansson and Alec Baldwin, just a handful of celebrities who graced the Broadway stage this season but were snubbed when it came to the Tony announcements.

Our first week of rehearsal has just come to a close. As many of you probably know, this production of Pippin originated at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Ma this past winter. Our director, Diane Paulus Porgy and Bess, Hair, collaborated with Gypsy Snider a founding director of the circus company Les 7 Doigts de la Main to create a new context and theme for the show - the circus. However Diane also wanted to incorporate some of the beloved choreography and iconic style from the original 1972 production created by DirectorChoreographer Bob Fosse. Our choreographer, Chet Walker an expert on the Fosse style and a cast member of the original production of Pippin, has made several referential nods to the original Pippin in his choreography and has even utilized some of the original choreography in a couple of key moments. For more information on the new concept and the creation of the show,...

Today in 1999, Fosse opened at the Broadhurst THeatre, where it ran for 1093 performances. Fosse is a three-act musical revue showcasing the choreography of Bob Fosse. The original Broadway production, conceived and directed by Richard Maltby, Jr. and Ann Reinking was choreographed by Reinking and Chet Walker. In 2002, Fosse, featuring Reinking and Ben Vereen, was aired as part of the Great Performances series on PBS television. A London production opened at the West End Prince of Wales Theatre on February 8, 2000 and closed January 6, 2001. The musical did not recreate the musical numbers as originally presented but instead had primarily black-and-white costumes including the all-important hats, set against a simple setting.

We've got magic to do, just for you sing the weird and slightly worrisome band of players in the uniquely compelling 1970s classic Pippin, by Stephen Schwartz and Roger O. Hirson. While the creation of the original Broadway production in 1972 was plagued with problems - none the least of which being the composerlyricist, Schwartz, and the show's choreographerdirector, Bob Fosse, failing to see eye to eye on virtually anything, resulting in Schwartz's barring from rehearsals and much of his input denied - it went on to become a Tony Award-winning mega-hit, running for nearly 2000 performances before it closed in 1977. The score even had a few crossover poprock bids thanks to the Jackson 5 and The Supremes utilizing the sounds of Schartz's contemporary and radio-friendly score, with a cast album on the Motown record label, no less and some funky new arrangements and orchestrations augmenting the sterling Ralph Burns originals, as a result.
