According to a Variety interview, yes. But is this part of the director and Taxi Driver writer’s self-mythologising? The American Kennel Club might have the answer
Stephen Rodrick’s interview with Paul Schrader in Variety is a thing of great heft. Over the course of the piece, Schrader grapples openly with the looming spectre of death, contacts Kevin Spacey to star in a potential Sinatra biopic and revisits a decade-old feud he has had with his own interviewer. But that isn’t why people will remember it. No, they will remember the interview because, out of nowhere, Martin Scorsese’s dog eats Paul Schrader’s finger.
During one of their conversations for the piece, late last year, Schrader turned up for dinner with “a massive, bloody bandage” wrapped around his hand. Rodrick asks what happened, and then pastes in a transcript of the following exchange.

On January 10, 2013, The New York Times published a story by Stephen Rodrick titled “Here Is What Happens When You Cast Lindsay Lohan in Your Movie.” The article was a detailed account of what happened when director Paul Schrader, writer Bret Easton Ellis, and producer Braxton Pope teamed up to make “The Canyons,” a low-budget feature starring troubled former child star Lindsay Lohan and porn actor James Deen that was in danger of falling apart nearly every day thanks to Lohan’s erratic behavior. The piece was thorough, well-researched, and extremely entertaining. It also had nothing to do with the actual movie that emerged from the chaos.
Nevertheless, by the time “The Canyons” was released in August 2013 it was clear that the article and the gossip had created a sense that Schrader’s film couldn’t possibly be any good — how could the conditions described by Rodrick lead to anything coherent?...

Each year we publish tens of thousands of stories, covering music news and trends, political analysis, how culture is constantly shifting, and critical takes on our entertainment landscape. So we realize some may get lost in the shuffle — especially in a year when it seemed we were consuming more media than ever before as we tried to make sense of the world in which we live.
And there are always interviews, investigative features, and provocative storytelling that deserves to be revisited. Our most-read story of the year was an essay by anthropologist Wade Davis,...

On HBO’s addictive drama Succession, actor Jeremy Strong plays Kendall Roy, second-oldest son of media titan Logan Roy (played by Brian Cox). While all the Roys are twisted in their own way, Kendall may be the most damaged. Over the course of two seasons, he’s battled drug addiction, familial betrayal, and bad decision after bad decision (including an ill-conceived freestyle rap). The role won Strong his first Emmy, in September. As Rolling Stone writer Stephen Rodrick recently proclaimed: “Strong’s Kendall Roy is one of the best broken...

Johnny Depp — “alternately hilarious, sly and incoherent” in a major new Rolling Stone profile focusing on the actor’s legal and financial woes — has, according to the article, made $650 million on films that netted $3.6 billion. “Almost all of it,” says the magazine, “is gone.”
The piece, titled “The Trouble With Johnny Depp” and written by Stephen Rodrick, details Depp’s lawsuits against The Management Group, run by Depp’s longtime business manager Joel Mandel and his brother Robert, for negligence, breach of fiduciary duty and fraud. “The suit cites, among other things, that under Tmg’s watch Depp’s sister Christi was given $7 million and his assistant, Nathan Holmes, $750,000, without his knowledge, and that he has paid the IRS more than $5.6 million in late fees.” The suit seeks more than $25 million from Tmg, accounting for tens of millions it claims Tmg illegally took for its commission, plus any additional damages the court sees fit.

Johnny Depp gave a lengthy interview to Rolling Stone to get out “the truth.” The blockbuster movie star opened up about his lavish spending habits lawsuits, and his first days in Los Angeles.
Depp has had a rough couple of years. He’s been in financial trouble and was accused of domestic abuse by his ex-wife Amber Heard (Depp has denied all the accusations). The accusations, in the MeToo era, however, led to backlash over his starring role in an upcoming “Fantastic Beasts” movie.
In the interview, Depp also speaks about the legal battle with his former business managers Joel and Robert Mandel, and explains why he uses an earpiece on set as well as why he spent $5 million to to honor Hunter S. Thompson.

Johnny Depp tells all about his financial woes and legal battle against his former business managers in a lengthy interview with Rolling Stone, but the most shocking part of his sit-down with reporter Stephen Rodrick finds the actor sharing a polarizing theory: Dropping LSD out of airplanes over Pakistan would have helped find Osama bin Laden faster. Rodrick writes Depp is “evangelical in the uses of narcotics and thinks they could have expedited the capture of Osama bin Laden.”
“You get a bunch of fucking planes, big fucking planes that spray shit, and you drop LSD 25,” Depp said. “You saturate the fucking place. Every single thing will walk out of their cave smiling, happy.”
Depp’s bin Laden comment isn’t the only moment the actor reminisces about drugs. Depp remembered a time when Hunter S. Thompson picked up him at an airpot in Aspen, Colorado and told him there...

Paul Schrader and Bret Easton Ellis' Hollywood satire "The Canyons" has faced bad buzz ever since Stephen Rodrick's damning (and fantastically entertaining) New York Times Magazine feature ran in January, exposing a production that was fraught from the get-go. Not helping matters was the fact that both Sundance and SXSW rejected the film, despite the talent behind the camera and an anticipated lead turn from troubled starlet Lindsay Lohan, who stars in the film opposite porn star James Deen. Since finally screening for critics, reviews have been divided. Indiewire's Eric Kohn called the film a "misfire" that "is as bad as it looks," while Variety's Scott Foundas came to the film's defense saying it was "handsomely made," anchored by Lohan's "fascinating presence." On Monday night at the world premiere, hosted by the Film Society of Lincoln Center at their Walter Reade Theater, the audience in attendance (including Lohan's mother,...

Lindsay Lohan might be a lot of things -- like "troubled," "tormented" and a "train wreck" -- but director Paul Schrader believes she has an undeniable spark that keeps people coming back for more.
In a piece written for the latest issue of Film Comment, Schrader describes what it was like to work with Lohan on the set of his psycho-sexual thriller, "The Canyons." Although the 27-year-old might have a penchant for "[t]ardiness, unpredictability, tantrums, absences, neediness, psychodrama" just like her icon, Marilyn Monroe, he believes she still has raw talent and charisma. Her personal struggles might outshine her professional successes, but even that tumultuousness continues to enthrall.
Writes Schrader:
Monroe and Lohan exist in the space between actors and celebrities, people whose professional and personal performances are more or less indistinguishable. Entertainers understand the distinction. To be successful, a performer controls the balance between the professional and personal, that is,...

At this point, there is no way Paul Schrader.s The Canyons can possibly live up to half of the hype it.s gotten. As if Bret Easton Ellis, Lindsay Lohan and adult film star James Deen.s names weren.t each a reason to readily expect this film to be a guilty pleasure, it got snubbed by Sundance to only recently find a home with IFC Films, and a lengthy N.Y. Times article by Stephen Rodrick threw the entire production beneath a bus of miscommunications and bloated egos. And now porn maven James Deen disrobes his side of the story to The Daily Beast, and due to a combination of Deen.s innocent naivety in the standard filmmaking industry, his pointedly childlike manner of stating facts over crafting a story, and his overtly non-partisan manner of opining negatively, this is just as good a read as Rodrick.s...

A tumultuous shoot, a volatile leading lady, and a veteran director collaborating with one of the most visible Twitter presences around; Kenneth Anger might just need to devote the entirety of “Hollywood Babylon IV” to Paul Schrader's “The Canyons” alone. But before that volume comes out, we've got the filmmaker's latest rebuttal against early criticisms of the film, as well as Steven Soderbergh hinting at what's in store when it's finally released. Wme sales agents are showing the Lindsey Lohan/James Deen drama to acquisition execs this week, but after a recent series of increasingly worrisome turns -- starting with Stephen Rodrick's engrossing Nyt piece and ending with the film's Sundance and SXSW rejections -- a hugely positive pitch will be needed to sway the requisite parties. However, Schrader tells IndieWire that his first step toward “cinema for the post-theatrical era" begins with “The...

Paul Schrader and Bret Easton Ellis' Hollywood satire "The Canyons" has been marred with bad buzz ever since Stephen Rodrick's damning (and fantastically entertaining) New York Times Magazine feature ran, exposing a production fraught with trouble from the get-go. In addition to that, the film's been rejected by both Sundance and SXSW, despite Schrader's involvement. One of the most fascinating reveals made in the Rodrick's article involved none other than Steven Soderbergh, who was approached by producer Braxton Pope, unsatisfied with Schrader's rough cut. According to Rodrick, Soderbergh offered 72 hours of his time to have a go with the footage, but Schrader refused his input. Indiewire sat down with Soderbergh yesterday to discuss what he's said will be his final feature to open theatrically, "Side Effects," and naturally, the conversation veered to "The Canyons." "I never wanted that to go beyond Paul,"...

From its inception, The Canyons sounded like a fiasco in the making, a Kickstarter-aided indie production featuring a director (Paul Schrader) and a writer (Bret Easton Ellis) many years removed from their signature works (1976’s Taxi Driver and 1985’s Less Than Zero, respectively), and a star, in Lindsay Lohan, whose many legal and substance abuse problems have been meticulously documented by the tabloid press. Inexplicably, New York Times reporter Stephen Rodrick was given access to the set and the editing suite, resulting in a wildly entertaining, Devil’s Candy-like account of Schrader and Lohan’s temperamental relationship ...

It's Sunday afternoon — your last chance to read all that stuff you meant to read last week before Monday brings a new deluge of things you will want to read. Below, some of our recommendations: "Here Is What Happens When You Cast Lindsay Lohan in Your Movie" by Stephen Rodrick (The New York Times Magazine): The title is self-explanatory, and the content is both what you'd expect and, somehow, so much more. "The Holy or the Broken" by Ryan Dombal (Pitchfork): How Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" — which you know from either 1984's Various Positions, Jeff Buckley's Grace, Marissa's death on The O.C., or Adam Sandler's parody at December's Hurricane Sandy benefit concert, depending on how old you are — became a cultural touchstone. "The Lion Smokes Tonight" by Drew Magary (GQ): Hanging out with the Rasta-dude formally known as Snoop Dogg."George Saunders and Andy Ward...

If you read The New York Times Magazine's lengthy and bewildering profile of what it's like to work with Lindsay Lohan, you'll no doubt be surprised by this recording.
TMZ obtained an audio recording from the set of "The Canyons" -- the film which Ntym writer Stephen Rodrick detailed from start to finish. In the audio clip, Lohan can be heard blasting her co-star James Deen and arguing with director Paul Schrader during a scene rehearsal.
Sources told TMZ, the clip was recorded on the third day of production and the three can be heard arguing over the continuity of the scene. Schrader can be heard taking the actors through the scene and tries to explain to Lohan they need to run through the scene all the way to the kiss at the end.
When the director yelled "action," something apparently displeased Lohan who unloaded on her co-star, telling him:
"No,...

If you haven’t already, you absolutely must read this “Making of The Canyons/Lindsay Lohan profile” that was published in the New York Times yesterday. The article, “Here is What Happens When You Cast Lindsay Lohan in Your Movie,” is a wonderful behind-the-scenes look at the low-budget film The Canyons that was shot while Lohan continued her public struggles. Between the constant smoking, delusions about her life, how Paul Schrader got her to work and her issues with co-star James Deen, the whole thing is a fascinating read.

"The Canyons," the upcoming Paul Schrader movie starring Lindsay Lohan and porn star James Deen, has been an interesting project ever since it was first announced. The movie earned some press for Lohan missing days filming and generally being a nightmare to work with -- as TMZ recently proved -- but that's apparently nothing compared to what the experience actually was like.
The New York Times put out a article called "Here's What Happens When You Cast Lindsay Lohan In Your Movie." Writer Stephen Rodrick followed the production on the project seemingly since Lohan first became involved, and details exactly what happened while he was on set. The full piece is equal parts intriguing and terrifying. Here are some excerpts:
Getting Lohan on board:
"Schrader goes over some ground rules; no trailers on set and one contractually obligated, four-way sex scene. Oh, another thing, Schrader adds: he will not try to sleep with her.

Washington, Jan 11: Lindsay Lohan locked herself in a walk-in closet with her friend and refused to come out prior to shooting a four-way sex scene with three porn stars on the set of 'The Canyons', it has been revealed.
According to veteran profile writer Stephen Rodrick, film director Paul Schrader tried first to coax her out, and then resorted to threatening her through the locked closet door, Us magazine reported.
After an hour of non-compliance, the 65-year-old director finally had the idea to strip down himself to make Lohan feel more comfortable, and it worked.
Lohan then proceeded to film one take of a 14-minute.

Hey, at least the movie got made, right?
Lindsay Lohan emerges as a whole new kind of train wreck thanks to an extremely detailed and revealing article that was published today in the New York Times. Ace reporter Stephen Rodrick delivers a lengthy but utterly fascinating read about "Taxi Driver" and "Raging Bull" screenwriter Paul Schrader, Twitter bully Bret Easton Ellis, porn superstar James Deen and everyone's favorite former Disney princess coming together to make "The Canyons," a microbudgeted sex-and-drugs odyssey funded mostly by a Kickstarter campaign.
Aspiring filmmakers, you might want to steer clear of this crazy lot if you're trying to get your own project off the ground -- especially the female lead. Here are the 10 best Lilo-related tidbits from "Here Is What Happens When You Cast Lindsay Lohan in Your Movie" (which is definitely worth reading in its entirety if you can conjure your pre-Internet attention span).

Ever wonder what happens once Lindsay Lohan is cast in a film? New York Times Magazine contributing writer Stephen Rodrick found out when he spent time with the actress on the set of The Canyons - an explicit Kickstarter-funded "microbudget" film penned by American Psycho author Bret Easton Ellis. In the nearly 8,000 word piece, Rodrick unveils a unique version of Lohan, 26, in which she goes on extended crying jags yet shows actual talent on set. Still, he depicts her behaving very unreliably (at one point actually fleeing from crew members to go out to lunch with her friends) and acting...

Wow. As much as we blog about celebrity gossip, rarely do we get a chance to peak behind the veil created by publicists, managers and, well, the stars themselves. It’s only when certain celebrities can’t control themselves do we get a hint at the chaos behind the scenes. While writer Stephen Rodrick doesn’t discuss any of Lindsay Lohan‘s recent emergenices/run-ins with the law in his in-depth article “Here Is What Happens When You Cast Lindsay Lohan In Your Movie,” his piece about Lilo’s most recent film The Canyons with director Paul Schrader and co-star James Deen is still fascinating, baffling and, let’s be honest, utterly heart-breaking. The whole thing is worth a read, but we selected the most gasp-inducing moments from the story for you to peruse in the meantime:
1) On Lindsay’s Canyons salary: “The actress will get $100 a day and an equal share of the profits,...

Lindsay Lohan was an utter disaster on the set of the movie "The Canyons" ... this according to a writer embedded with the production, who says he saw a seemingly drunk LiLo get into her car and drive off the set after a boozing session. The man who wrote article is Stephen Rodrick -- who says he was allowed to chronicle the project from start to finish. According to Rodrick, Lohan was a mess who was...

Lindsay Lohan's outrageous antics off-set -- reportedly punching a psychic, getting slapped with multiple misdemeanors for lying to police and stealing jewelry from shops in L.A. -- are apparently on par with her destructive behavior on-set, a lengthy new feature in the New York Times magazine reports. In the piece, veteran profile writer Stephen Rodrick details the 26-year-old starlet's many breakdowns on the set of The Canyons, including one particularly bizarre incident when she locked herself in a walk-in closet with her friend and refused to come [...]...
