The 123 hours of audiotapes that Claudia “Lady Bird” Johnson recorded during her husband’s wholly unexpected tenure in the White House capture five of the most fraught and productive years of the American presidency from a front-row vantage point. Her observations, some held sealed until as late as 2017, were a core resource for Julia Sweig’s biography Lady Bird Johnson: Hiding in Plain Sight. Based on that book and Sweig’s subsequent podcast, Dawn Porter’s sympathetic and involving documentary furthers the argument that Lady Bird made the most of a vaguely defined role, embarking on advocacy projects that were ahead of their time while providing crucial support and counsel to Lbj.

Busy documentarian Dawn Porter will debut her latest project, “The Lady Bird Diaries,” March 10 at SXSW. The all-archival doc, which will bow on Hulu later this year, relies on 123 hours of personal and revealing audio diaries that Lady Bird recorded during her the presidency of her husband, Lyndon Baines Johnson. The tapes, which were not publicly released until 2017, reveal the critical role the former First Lady played in Lbj’s White House as a close advisor and trusted political partner.
Claudia Alta “Lady Bird” Johnson began her recording diary shortly after the assassination of John F. Kennedy in November 1963 and kept recording through her family’s departure from the White House in January 1969. Julia Sweig spent five years researching the diaries for her 2021 biography “Lady Bird Johnson: Hiding in Plain Sight,” which she turned into an eight-part podcast that formed the basis for Porter’s 90-minute docu, produced by Trilogy Films for ABC News Studios.

In June, Focus Features will release Oscar-nominated director Julie Cohen’s “Every Body,” a documentary about three intersex individuals.
It is estimated that up to 1.7% of the world’s population is born with intersex traits, according to the U.N.’s Human Rights Office. The term intersex is used to describe people born with physical sex characteristics that do not fit typical definitions of male or female. These traits may be evident at birth, emerge at puberty, or become apparent later in life.
Produced in partnership with NBC News Studios, “Every Body” investigates the lives of actor and screenwriter River Gallo (they/them), political consultant Alicia Roth Weigel (she/they), and Ph.D. student Sean Saifa Wall (he/him). The docu examines how all three subjects moved from childhoods marked by shame, secrecy, and non-consensual surgeries to thriving adulthoods after each set aside medical advice to keep their bodies a...

A departure from Cirque du Soleil’s previous theatrical features (2012’s Worlds Away and the 2000 3D IMAX short Journey of a Man), Dawn Porter’s Cirque du Soleil: Without a Net breaks the third wall with a more intimate portrait of the company as it emerges from a 400-plus-day-long Covid pause and aims to restart its elaborate show O in Las Vegas. While theater companies adapted to Covid by offering performances for patrons on Zoom, that was never an option for an organization that prides itself on large-scale spectacles with countless moving parts. The flaw of Worlds Away and Journey of a Man, despite their use of 3D, is that they fail to capture the scope and scale of Cirque du Soleil. Porter, instead, keeps her camera at eye level, gazing in wonder at how a world-class team of acrobats, dancers, artistic swimmers, choreographers, coaches, divers, production managers, and trainers...

Prior to the advent of streaming, documentaries had a reputation for being, as Jerry Seinfeld put it at the 2007 Oscars, “incredibly depressing.”
Politics, the environment, warfare, and the farming industry were all topics routinely explored by documentary filmmakers for several decades. But Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, Apple, and Disney have effectively altered the nonfiction landscape by seeking out documentaries that have mass appeal, which has in turn helped them build their respective audiences. Netflix has a knack for determining what will appeal to viewers. “Tiger King,” “The Last Dance” and “The Tinder Swindler” were all released on the streaming service.
Given the ongoing worldwide pandemic, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, America’s school shooting crisis, the yearly uptick in extreme weather events, it’s not exactly a surprise that viewers are attracted to nonfiction content that isn’t didactic. It makes sense that factual features and series about celebrities, sports, and music are all the rage.

The program is one among many currently in the pipeline at ABC News Studios, a new effort by the Disney-backed news organization to centralize its efforts to produce documentary programming aimed at fueling the fortunes of Disney properties.
“We want to leverage our intellectual property that is generated across the news division in service of entertaining narrative storytelling. That is an absolute priority for us,” says Mike Kelley, vice president and head of ABC News Studios, in an interview. “We know that...

“Confirmed,” a new docuseries from Dawn Porter, that will trace the modern history of the Supreme Court, and the people, decisions and confirmation battles that have shaped the United States is headed to Showtime, the cable network announced Tuesday. The four-part series will air in early 2023.
Here’s a logline for the docuseries: “From the right to privacy, to access to the ballot, and all rights protected by the Constitution, the nine unelected justices of the Supreme Court have the final word on issues that shape our democracy and daily lives. The series unfolds during a profoundly consequential year, from the historic confirmation of Ketanji Brown Jackson, the fallout of an unprecedented leak from inside the Court’s chambers, and a Supreme Court, remade by former President Donald Trump, in the wake of overturning Roe v. Wade. To understand this critical moment, the series looks back at the Court in the 1950s,...

After the Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, it might seem crass to talk about the movies. This week’s column is not here to offer listicles about must-see cinema on a subject that causes such immediate pain and hardship. However, the people who produced documentaries on abortion rights provided essential context— and a few hours after the court’s decision, they told me we need more.
“We need all hands on deck,” said filmmaker Heidi Ewing, speaking over Zoom from the Nantucket Film Festival. “I’ve never claimed that movies can change the world, but I do feel movies should be part of all the conversations we’re having about this.”
As Ewing and others explained, this work can have measurable impact. With her regular co-director Rachel Grady, Ewing made the 2010 documentary “12th & Delaware,” which looked at both sides of the divide by contrasting an abortion clinic in Fort Pierce,...

Dawn Porter and Nicole Newnham’s four-part docuseries “37 Words,” debuting June 21 on ESPN, celebrates the 50th anniversary of Title IX while also exploring the current struggle to maintain and evolve the 1972 law that forbids discrimination based on gender.
Prior to 1972, gender discrimination was commonplace in education and athletics. Physical activity for girls and women was cast as unfeminine, and while schools poured money and other resources into programs for male students, budding female athletes were left to fend for themselves. That all changed when Congress passed Title IX – a 37-word amendment — on June 23 that year.
“37 Words” marks the latest piece of programming in ESPN’s month-long “Fifty/50” initiative to commemorate the landmark federal civil-rights law prohibiting sex-based discrimination in any educational institution that receives federal funding. Disputes over Antonio Campos’ HBO Max adaptation of “The Staircase” have some in the documentary community questioning whether they would readily allow a narrative director to turn their facts into fiction.
“The Staircase” revolves around the death of Kathleen Peterson and the murder trial of her husband Michael, as the filmmakers chronicling the case for a docuseries of the same name become central characters in the storytelling. Kathleen Peterson was found dead at the bottom of the staircase of their North Carolina home in 2001, and Michael was convicted of murder in 2003 before accepting an Alford plea for manslaughter charges in 2017, which freed him for good. The HBO Max series, which concluded this week, stars Colin Firth as Michael and Toni Collette as Kathleen; documentary filmmaker Jean-Xavier de Lestrade is portrayed by Vincent Vermignon and editor Sophie Brunet by Juliette Binoche.

Covenant House held a star-studded fundraiser on Monday night to help continue its lifesaving work with homeless youth.
Hosted by Tony-winner Audra McDonald and CBS News’ John Dickerson, “A Night of Covenant House Stars” was a virtual stand-in for the organization’s annual spring gala in New York City.
“We’ve all been destabilized by Covd-19, and kids experiencing homelessness are really hard hit,” Dickerson said at the start of the two-hour event. “More than four million young people will experience homelessness in the U.S. alone, and the virus has it out for them. It takes advantage of their weakened bodies and their anxious minds. But they are not alone; the Covenant House is there. The doors are still open 24/7 just like before. The hope is still there. The courage is there. Love is there because people may be discovering the good that is inside us during this pandemic.

Chris O'Dowd might be a Hollywood star himself, but he and his wife Dawn O'Porter still get a little freaked out around celebrities.
The actor revealed on The Graham Norton Show that presenter Dawn got starstruck around Brad Pitt and Bradley Cooper and acted pretty creepily as a result.
O'Dowd explained that after being introduced to Pitt at an awards ceremony, his wife held on to the World War Z star's hand for a total of 41 seconds and continued to grab it even after he started to walk off.
But that wasn't all, as the actor also revealed that his wife stole a fork used by Cooper at an awards ceremony a few weeks later.
He added: "It's hard to feel like a sex symbol when your wife is using another man's cutlery."
