Another day, another movie-to-tv project gaining momentum. On this occasion, it’s the Angelina Jolie-fronted actioner Salt that looks set to swap one medium for another, with Sony allegedly keen to expand the dormant IP in “a completely different way.”
That’s according to Screen Daily, reporting that the studio is shopping the pitch to buyers at the European Film Market. Indeed, it’s the first sign of movement from the Salt camp in some time, after the possibility of a sequel – one to be penned by Kurt Winner and, later, Becky Johnston – quickly faded into obscurity. Now, six years since the original’s theatrical release, Sony is hoping to find better fortune on the small screen.

Remember Salt? The 2010 spy thriller didn't leave much of a cultural impact, and it's probably still best known for having Angelina Jolie star in a lead role that was originally meant for Tom Cruise. But despite the fact that Sony tried unsuccessfully to get a sequel off the ground — twice, in fact — the studio is apparently developing a TV adaptation of the movie and is currently pitching the project at the European Film Market.
Screen Daily has the report, which comes along with a quote from Diego Suarez, the senior vice president of international television production at Sony Pictures Entertainment:
"We want to bring it to Europe in a completely different way."
What exactly that means remains unclear. One interpretation is that they could, for example, partner with a European company like Luc Besson's EuropaCorp to produce this show. Or, Suarez could simply mean that they plan to eventually shoot the show overseas.

Since 2010's Angelina Jolie-starring spy thriller "Salt" earned nearly $295 million worldwide, Sony predictably saw franchise potential as such. Kurt Winner, who penned the first film, wrote a draft for "Salt 2" which was apparently turned down by Jolie, and at the end of 2012, “The Prince of Tides” and “Seven Years in Tibet” scribe Becky Johnston was tapped to write another version. But it seems Sony has finally realized no one wants a "Salt" sequel, and are exploring an option that makes a bit more sense in terms of brand extension. Miami's national landmark Vizcaya Museum and Gardens will be featured in a new one-hour documentary. "Ocean's 11" actor Andy Garcia will be narrating the film, which will focus on the remarkable structure built in 1916.
The film will detail the visions of International Harvester Vice President James Deering in constructing Vizcaya. Deering, who envisioned the place as his winter residence, enlisted the help of curator and decorative painter Paul Chalfin in creating the estate. F. Burrall Hoffman designed the house and other buildings on the property, while landscape artist Diego Suarez designed the gardens.
The documentary will center on the process of building and designing the landmark. It will also feature extensive interviews with people familiar with the place, including Vizcaya curator Flaminia Gennari-Santori and the heirs of the landmark's first land surveyor.
Producer Linda Corley said, "This documentary about Vizcaya is the first of its kind. Never before has an...
