Painterly animation gets a new twist in Netflix’s “The Magician’s Elephant” (currently streaming), directed by VFX supervisor Wendy Rogers. Adapted from Kate Dicamillo’s 2009 children’s book about two siblings separated by war, the first-time director sought a soft aesthetic to help convey magical realism.
“When I came to the project, it already had producer Julia Pistor [‘Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events’], and they switched from live action to animation,” Rogers told IndieWire. “I met Julia and pitched my vision to Netflix and was lucky to get it.” Rogers wanted the world and overall animation style to be physically grounded, while the soft cloud-filled sky and painted texturing served as part of the magical realism.
“I think the themes that are in the book — belief in the impossible and taking action on that belief through curiosity and always questioning the world — are inspiring,” she added.

The 24th annual Art Directors Guild Awards, which honors the best production design in film and television, took place Saturday, February 1. All eyes were on the Period Film category, which this year had four nominees match up with the Oscars for Best Production Design: “The Irishman,” “Jojo Rabbit,” “1917” and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” The other two Adg period contenders were “Ford v Ferrari” and “Joker,” while the Oscars’ fifth bid went to “Parasite,” which was up for Contemporary Film at the guild. Scroll down to see the full winners list for the 2020 Adg Awards.

On December 9, the Art Directors Guild announced the nominees for its 24th annual awards, which will be handed out on Feb. 1. These kudos have a stellar record at previewing the Academy Awards. Over the first 23 years of these prizes, the eventual Oscar winner for Best Production Design has always numbered among the Adg nominees in the various categories.
According to our expert predictions, period film contender “Once Upon A Time in Hollywood” is the clear frontrunner to win the Oscar for Best Production Design. We expect that three of its rival in that race at the Adg — “The Irishman,” “Jojo Rabbit” and “1917” — will also contend at the Oscars. The fifth Academy Awards nominee is expected to be “Little Women,” but its odds might lengthen after being snubbed by the guild.

Approached by DreamWorks Animation about the prospect of helming a “Yeti movie,” writer/director Jill Culton seized what she saw as both an opportunity and a challenge, “to reinvent and define a mythical creature in a new way for audiences,” she says.
Premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, Culton’s second feature centers on Yi (Chloe Bennet), a rebellious and highly intelligent young woman whose life is forever changed, after encountering a young Yeti on the roof of her Shanghai apartment building. After dragging two of her friends on a journey to the Himalayas to reunite the creature with his family, Yi contends with a zoologist and an ultra-wealthy man who have their own designs on the yeti.
Casting Albert Tsai, Tenzing Norgay Trainor, Sarah Paulson and Eddie Izzard in the awards-contending animated pic, Culton approached the role of Yi with great care.

DreamWorks Animation’s “Abominable” is a fantasy about a city girl and two cousins helping a Yeti travel across China to its Mount Everest home, but creating the film’s look with virtual lighting and production design required as much attention to detail as any live-action feature.
Proprietary software allowed head of lighting Michael Necci and his team to arrange their lights on a virtual soundstage around the final on-screen image. The team was free to make minute adjustments as if they were in the rafters of a real stage, seeing the results in real time. “Looking at what our lights are doing in scenes mimics what happens on a live-action stage,” Necci says, “but we don’t have the limitations of having to position C-stands.”
Written and directed by Jill Culton, with co-director Todd Wilderman, “Abominable” is a co-production with China-based Pearl Studios, formerly Oriental DreamWorks, and opens in theaters Sept.

DreamWorks Animation screened 25 minutes of its upcoming Yeti feature, “Abominable” (September 27), along with its third short, “Marooned,” at the Annecy Animation Film Festival on Tuesday. And, for good measure, the studio also trotted out rough footage and the first trailer from “Trolls World Tour”, in which Poppy (Anna Kendrick) and Branch (Justin Timberlake) step into a musical troll war with rivals from rock, country, cool jazz, classical, and funk. IndieWire got an earlier sneak peek at the Glendale campus.
“Abominable,” co-produced by Shanghai-based Pearl Studio, is a gorgeous-looking adventure about a teenage girl named Yi (Chloe Bennet), who discovers a child-like Yeti on the roof of her Shanghai apartment while playing the violin. Yi then embarks on a quest with two friends to reunite the magical creature she calls Everest (which controls nature as an expression of beauty) with its family in the Himalayas. I really don't put much stock in the International Animated Film Society's 2013 Annie Awards, which is why I didn't rush to report on their results on Saturday. One year Disney and Pixar boycott the event, feeling there was an unfair advantage paid to larger contributing sponsors, DreamWorks being the primary example. So with such a nasty stench over the event what good does it do to pay it much mind? That said, I'll be brief in mentioning Wreck-It Ralph topped Saturday night's winners with five awards, including Best Animated Picture. The awards have something like a 75% streak when it comes to helping predict the eventual Oscar winner for Best Animated Feature and as the days have gone on, it's looking more and more like Ralph will be this year's winner (see my predictions here). Pixar's Brave, Laika's ParaNorman and DreamWorks' Rise of the Guardians each took home two awards in lesser,...

I love the art of animation, and it's amazing to see how far things have come and advanced over the years. The industry is changing in terms of technology, but what it all really comes down to is telling good stories. There's been a lot of great animated movies this year, and many of them are up for several awards at the 40th Annual Annie Awards.
Some of the movies nomainated include Brave, Frankenweenie, Hotel Transylvania, ParaNorman, Rise of the Guardians, The Pirates! Band of Misfits, and Wreck-It Ralph. Out of those films my favorite is a toss up between Wreck-It Ralph and ParaNorman, those were two pretty incredible films. I think ParaNorman has the edge though.
Some of the other animated properties nominated are Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1, Disney Tron: Uprising, Justice League: Doom, Robot Chicken ‘DC Comics Special', South Park ‘Raising the Bar’, and several others.

Disney withdrew from the International Animated Film Society, Asifa-Hollywood back in 2010 and even before then it was hard to put much stock in the Annie Awards. Now it's just sort of a blip on the overall award season radar that manages headlines twice a year, once for their nominees and again for their winners, which this year will be announced on Saturday, February 2, 2013. That said, the org announced their 2013 nominees this morning and their Best Feature Film list was made up of eight nominees (a large list considering the lack of quality animated films I've seen this year) including Brave, Frankenweenie, Hotel Transylvania, ParaNorman, Rise of the Guardians, The Pirates! Band of Misfits, The Rabbi's Cat and Wreck-It Ralph. It is nice not to see something like The Lorax among that list, but I still think this was a year in which the field could have easily been limited to five nominees.

On Sunday afternoon, Wamg attended the AFI-fest Gala screening of Rise Of The Guardians . and man was that fun!! On hand to introduce the film were director Peter Ramsay and star Alec Baldwin. The film is a high-octane romp through the magical worlds of Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, the Sandman, and Jack Frost.
The 3-D works spectacularly and the voice talent is brilliant. Opening on Thanksgiving weekend, this is a great movie for the whole family. (5 out of 5 Stars!).
