True Conviction screens Sunday, November 5th at 4:00pm at Washington University’s Brown Hall (Forsyth Boulevard and Chaplin Drive – two blocks west of Skinker Boulevard) as part of this year’s St. Louis International Film Festival. In attendance will be the film’s subject Christopher Scott as well as Antoinette (Annie) Grier, project manager of Washington U.’s Smart Decarceration Initiative at the Center for Social Development of the George Warren Brown School of Social Work. This is a Free event.
Christopher Scott was released from prison after serving 13 years of a life sentence for a murder he didn’t commit. That nightmare scenario is far too common: More than 30 people like Chris have been exonerated in Dallas County, Texas. Most of them are black men locked up in their youth who emerged in middle age looking for a way to make sense of what happened. One day, at a support-group meeting for exonerees,...

Part of the reason why Legends Of Tomorrow was so good so quickly is because the writers and staff had a strong sense of the show’s identity almost immediately. So about a third of the way through the Legends Of Tomorrow season 3 premiere, I had a brief flash of terror when I said out loud at my TV “well it’s just a straight-up action comedy now.”

On the outset the HBO hacking problem looks like it could be nothing but trouble. The only ones it looks like it could be positive for are those that are doing the hacking and, of course, those who want to see the next episode of Game of Thrones earlier than is scheduled. But maybe this hack can actually be considered to be a good thing. You might well be scratching your head wondering just how that can be, but let’s take a look at it. There’s no such thing as bad publicity, right? HBO has been in the spotlight since

The death of a cheerleader led to a theatrical trial on Bull Season 1 Episode 19.
Jules Caffrey was surprisingly easy to like. He was charming and handsome and he obviously loved his wife.
The man couldn’t even bring himself to talk about Lauren in the past tense and she’d been gone for three months.
Even Bull admitted that he believed Jules was innocent. It wasn’t the man that was questionable as much as his tactics.
Bull: You don't get my help by lying about hiring me.
Jules: Got you here, didn't it?
Bull: Yeah, well so would a text with a smiley face emoji. You pull that crap again and I'll be on Gail King saying how you did hire me but I quit because I couldn't believe how guilty I found you.

Let's address the elephant-sized diaper in the room, shall we? No, The Boss Baby is not about Donald Trump. Not that director Tom McGrath, or screenwriter Michael McCullers, or anyone at Fox or Dreamworks Animation would ever say that it was; it's safe to assume that this adaptation of Marla Frazee's 2010 children's book was in the works long before our current administration slithered its way into office. But given that this tiny tyrant is voiced by none other than Alec Baldwin, who's carved out a lucrative side career imitating an infantile commander-in-chief,...

Ten days after declaring war is a lousy time for a party, let alone a Super Bowl.
On Jan. 17, 1991, an armed coalition led by the United States commenced Operation Desert Storm in the Persian Gulf, marking the first major military action of the post-terrorism age. Less than two weeks later, the New York Giants and the Buffalo Bills prepared for their own conflict as Super Bowl Xxv kicked off in Tampa, Florida. Fears that Saddam Hussein would target this, the most American of sporting events, led some NFL officials to consider rescheduling. The big game would proceed as planned, but the festive mood of Jan.

Why, oh why don't these people get it by now? You do Not f*ck with James Delaney. Not. Ever.
There were quite a few shocks on Taboo Season 1 Episode 5, including the opening scene. We got want we wanted, sort of: a beautifully shot duel scene, but with a twist.
I Really wanted to see Thorne bite it, but alas, we'll have to wait until another day.
As satisfying as it would have been to see Delaney waste Thorne, it is actually more in keeping with the theme of the show to have Delaney spare him.
My apologies - that was an excellent shot. I can only assume that your second is a Company man, since he failed to load a ball in your pistol. It would appear that my life is more precious than yours. Good day.

The escalation of terror has dialed up a few more notches as writer/director James DeMonaco takes us further down the hole of first world genocide in The Purge: Election Year. What began behind fortified walls and a false sense of modest superiority to show how no one was safe when bloodlust, greed, and jealousy ruled mankind soon entered the outdoors to find the government blatantly enforcing its own thinly veiled mantra of “kill the poor” when the public stopped doing it for them. The only ones truly protected were these New Founding Fathers (Nffa) and all their friends possessing Level 10 clearance and above. Purge Night allowed murder and whatever else, but America’s new leaders would be spared since this grand gift was theirs. Until now.

In Son of Saul, the titular Saul (Géza Röhrig) is imprisoned within Auschwitz, but is allowed to survive — at least for the time being and under terrible circumstances. Saul and many of his fellow Jewish prisoners are repurposed as the “Sonderkommandos,” work units within the Nazi death camps that assist in the disposal of gas chamber victims. In the film, Saul becomes convinced that a boy that is murdered by the Nazis in the camp is his son, and he attempts to bury said boy against all odds.
The film has screened at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Grand Prix, and most recently, the Toronto International Film Festival.
Cineplex talked to director László Nemes and Géza Röhrig at Tiff about their unflinching film, Son of Saul; Sonderkommandos, and the pair’s contribution to the history of the Holocaust’s depiction on film.

Is National Hot Dog Day an officially recognized day celebrating a traditional American cuisine? Um, probably not. However, Twitter and Instagram woke up feeling some type of way over the summertime barbecue staple, and we're not one to complain about excuses to binge-eat while documenting our cheat days for social media. Can Hot Dog Day and Ice Cream Day and Pizza Day all be the same day, please? ...And by same day, we mean every day of our lives? The only ones less-than-excited on a themed day like this are the unwilling pets dragged into this for the Instagram likes. Trust us, your dachshund doesn't want to dress as a table meat that you aren't actually going to let it eat. So...

I grew up with telenovelas. I lived in Mexico during my formative years, and telenovelas were appointment viewing, with my friends and I faithfully gathering after school to watch the latest episodes. They had wonderful and outlandish names and dealt with cheating spouses, long-lost siblings, lucrative business deals, and a whole lot of evening gowns worn inside the house. Through those telenovelas, we saw that we could be anything we wanted to be when we grew up: rancheras who had to keep our land away from dastardly uncles; evil stepmothers with heavy, gaudy earrings; romantic heroes with two, three, even four different love interests; nuns and time travelers and high school women. We were inspired, and our imaginations ran wild with possibilities for our future lives. Telenovelas, in all their hyper-stylized dramatic storytelling, taught me that, as a young Latina, I could be anything I wanted.

Written by Steven Ritch
Directed by Hubert Cornfield
U.S.A., 1957
It is a wet, late night. Raindrops fall down on the sleepy Utah countryside like a hail of bullets on a battlefield. Five men in two trucks drive silently to a mysterious location, each wrestling internally with the rising tension befitting a major heist scheme. They are Eddie (Gene Raymond), Commando (Wayne Morris), Skeets (Elisha Cook Jr.), Roly (Stafford Repp) and Frankie (Steven Ritch, who also serves as screenwriter). Amidst the impressive storm they successfully halt a speeding train, blow up the outside wall to one of its cars and make away from a hefty sum of gold bullion. This is but the first part of their plan, for now the group must traverse police roadblocks along the way to the City of Angels, all while under the guise of various types of truck drivers (liquid chemical transportation,...

Let’s face it: before long, every working director, writer, and actor will have done something for either a Marvel or a DC film; maybe even both. The only ones to escape will be the Old Guard of Scorsese, Coppola, Spielberg, and Lucas (though I wonder about Spielberg). Following in the footsteps of Whedon, it seems hardly surprising that now Adam McKay is circling a potential directing gig with Marvel.
According to CraveOnline (via Coming Soon), McKay is currently in talks with the studio about directing a project for them. Though it’s not yet been established what character, group of characters, or sequel he might be taking on, there’s a good chance that the Anchorman director will jump into the McU before much more time has passed.
Here’s what McKay had to say about it:

Take three of why I wanted to write about Bigfoot: Bigfoot is an avatar of extra-human nature.
That is to say in the last two parts, I fibbed a bit for simplicity’s sake. Claiming Bigfoot has no cultural baggage is both true and false; he has no mythology and no permanent being, yet he does stand in for something in a thematic sense. He is unknowable, yes, malleable as well, but also an idea made somewhat more concrete- giving legs to a concept in order to express the abstract through a story. Bigfoot, in all his hairy glory, continually and perpetually represents an idea of “nature” (a term I take issue with, but for simplicity’s sake will use to mean all existence outside of that which is explicitly “human” or anthropocentric). He is, much like Swamp Thing, an avatar of the earth and of life. There is no...

When North Carolina killed its successful movie/TV incentive program on Wednesday, there was immediate concern that other states would follow suit. That concern may not be warranted. "That doesn’t appear to be the case for any state that is competitive and is attracting productions other than North Carolina," said Vans Stevenson, MPAA senior vp, state government affairs. "The only ones that have backed off are places where it hasn’t really been competitive or it was a unique situation like Iowa where they had a scandal." Among the most competitive states offering incentives are New York, Louisiana and Georgia,

If you’re not a comic book fan, chances are that the only place you’ve seen Aquaman will be in shows like Family Guy and The Big Bang Theory where he has been mercilessly ridiculed. It’s not hard to understand why, especially as on the surface it appears as if the aquatic superhero does little more than talk to fish.
However, there’s a lot more to Aquaman than that, perhaps explaining why he’s set to make an appearance in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice before taking on a leading role in both Justice League and his own solo movie. Of course, none of those will mark the character’s first live-action appearance as Alan Ritchson played him in Superman TV show Smallville and he was at one point set to have his own series starring Justin Hartley.

Focus Features recently released the trailer for writer/director Zach Braff's Wish I Was Here, his follow-up to Garden State which was infamously funded significantly by funds raised via Kickstarter. If you're a Zach Braff fan, you can just go ahead and skip my cynicism ahead and watch the trailer. I was a big fan of Braff's work on Scrubs but I am not the biggest Garden State fan. While he has a good eye for visuals, much of Garden State and this movie seem to have been written by a series of motivational posters and Facebook statuses strewn together to form a narrative. "When we were kids, my brother and I used to pretend that we were heroes. The only ones who could save the day. But maybe we're just the regular people; the ones who get saved." We'll say this for E4's new show Party House - it's certainly groundbreaking. No other structured reality show introduces a cast of characters for just one episode, but that's precisely what Party House aims to do, with a different bunch of mates throwing a party each week. But would the risk pay off?
Weirdly, yes. We went into Party House wanting to hate it, and we did - at first. Who were these people with names like Shoey? How were they all still friends when they'd all slept with each other? Best mates Laura and Lucca had both had it off with Shoey, but Lucca really liked him, whereas Laura had also slept with Martin, who wanted to be with Lillia. I'm sorry, what?
Things didn't improve as we got to know the gang in the hours pre-party. Lucca grinned as she spoke about how good Shoey was at...

Mad Men began its final season Sunday on AMC with a somber, even opaque episode that was probably a case of holding its final hand close to the vest. You hope there are some sensational cards there. Creator Matthew Weiner, whose baby this is, can be sensational or sensationally drab, exactly as he chooses.
The show's integrity is unmatched, admirable and every so often deeply irritating.
At any rate, I think it will be a while before anyone sings "Zou Bisou Bisou" again.
Last season ended with Don Draper (Jon Hamm) suffering a meltdown and/or moment of scorched-earth truthiness at a major presentation.

I really have to wonder if moving the show's main focus to New York can really save Glee. This latest episode has me pretty unconvinced, which is unfortunate. Perhaps it's because the only conflict is between Kurt and Blaine. Perhaps it's because the characters still act like high school kids. The only ones who seem to act like adults are Kurt and Rachel -- and they explain it by saying they've been in New York longer. Huh? Yeah, I'm confused too. In addition to the Klaine conflict, Sam and Artie have trouble finding their way around the big city, Rachel gets a verbal slap in the face from Artie to knock her off her pedestal -- sort of -- and Mercedes moves to the East Coast to record her album.

Why You’LL Love It: Before Fables, before Once Upon A Time, Clive Barker created a secret town of monsters that live among us. Don’t worry if you’ve never seen the film—Barker and writer Marc Andreyko (Batwoman, Manhunter) have crafted a story that all horror fans can enjoy. Add to the mix Piotr Kowalski’s art (Marvel Knights: Hulk, Sex) and this is a story that can’t be missed.

Mindy went to her grandson’s bris today. Meyer Manuel, known in Hebrew as Avraham, is named for all three grandfathers. He had his first taste of wine, too, suckling on a cloth dipped in Manischevitz. It’s supposed to “quiet the baby,” which means lead him into a drunken stupor, so that the pain of the circumcision will be dulled. It didn’t help.
Meyer Manual cried, and Alix wept, as did most everyone else; the only ones not crying were Jeff, who did look shaky but stayed strong, looked shaky but he managed okay. The only ones who didn’t cry were the moyel (the artist performing the procedure) and Grandma me – the moyel because, well, that’s his job – and also he was wonderful, attentive to Alix and Jeff and incredibly caring to Meyer Manuel – and as for me, well, I think because I’ve seen so...

The most recent “X is dead” proclamation comes from The Hollywood Reporter in the form of an obituary for the Hollywood romantic comedy. It’s cause of death, of course, is a lust for an international market and high concepts that play there, but while the article from Tatiana Siegel initially frames the loss with a black veil (the title proclaims that Harry wouldn’t meet Sally in 2013), the reality of the situation isn’t a cause for dirges. Instead, it’s an opportunity for innovation that deserves a marching band. At least two of the filmmakers interviewed said as much. First, Seeking a Friend for the End of the World producer Joy Gorman: “The meet-cute is dead. The only ones that have a chance are ones with a very fresh take.” So the ones that abide strictly to a tired checklist don’t have a shot? Excellent. Second, there...

Riddick
Written and Directed by David Twohy
USA, 2013
It will probably be one of those unsolved mysteries of the ages, like the Voynich Manuscript or the secret ingredient to Spam, how a third Riddick movie got made. The first installment in the now 13-year old franchise, 2000′s Pitch Black, is largely looked back on as being not bad, and its follow-up, 2004′s The Chronicles of Riddick is remembered mostly for being terrible, and featuring Judi Dench in a rare career misstep.
So who exactly was clamoring for another film starring bald space-Conan? The answer is apparently its star, Vin Diesel. The new installment, simply titled Riddick, feels like a vanity piece and a weak attempt to capture whatever made Pitch Black as not bad as it was, mostly by retreading it like a lost hiker walking in circles.

Many fans know John Hodgman best for his work on "The Daily Show," being the "PC" to Justin Long's "Mac" in old Apple commercials or making appearances on television shows like "Community" and "Bored to Death." But the comedian spent a good portion of 2012 touring the country doing an apocalypse-themed standup routine that will soon be coming to Netflix in the new special "Ragnarok."
While Hodgman performed the routine a number of times, "Ragnarok" contains a show very close to his heart. The New York-set show took place on Dec. 21, 2012, the night the Mayans said the world would end, and Hodgman performed his routine to a packed house.
"I was very happy to usher them into whatever unknown awaited us," he tells Zap2it during a recent interview. "I think I was among the most surprised that the thing I least expected to happen happened, which was nothing."

Amanda Bynes has upped her Twitter game -- going from bra photos to posing topless in a matter of 24 hours. The actress has been chronicling some bizarre behavior on the social networking site, sharing pics of her buzzing her hair, hitting the gym and posting videos of her making weird faces for the camera. But last night, she shared her raciest shot yet, one of her holding her breasts while wearing nothing but underwear and tights. "Rawr!" she posted along with the pic.The photos come on the heels of a new interview with In Touch, where she says she's not a crazy person."I have no clue [why people say I’m insane]. Every time I’ve heard it, it came from an ugly person’s mouth, so I don’t care,” she told the mag. "The only ones lying about me having a mental illness are people I don’t talk to."What do...

New York, May 02(Ani): Amanda Bynes has blasted her naysayers after receiving consistent comments of her "strange," "erratic" or "bizarre" behavior.
Byne, who regularly vents her frustrations on Twitter, told In Touch magazine that she has no clue to why people say she is insane, New York Post reported.
The 27-year-old retired actress said that every time she has heard it, it came from an ugly person's mouth, so she doesn't care.
"The only ones lying about me having a mental illness are people I don't talk to," she said.
Bynes said she has the support of her friends.
The New Yorker, who denied reports.

Just yesterday, Amanda Bynes stripped down to her bra and snapped some photos, and lo and behold she's still taking pictures now that her bra has come off.
On Wednesday, the 27-year-old actress tweeted topless photos of herself to close to 800,000 followers.
In the first photo, which she captioned, "Rawr!," Bynes obscures a clear view of her breasts by crossing her arm over her body, and in another photo, her long blonde hair just barely covers her nipples. Fittingly, she wrote "Long hair don't care" along with the second photo.
Shortly after tweeting the racy photos, the "She's The Man" star also posted a close-up photo of what we're assuming is her belly button.
Bynes' behavior has been increasingly erratic in recent months, but she doesn't seem to understand why everyone is so concerned about her well-being.

Amanda Bynes recently gave an interview -- her first in a good long while -- to "In Touch," and here's her obligatory name-calling and "It's not me, it's you" routine:“I have no clue [why people say I’m insane]. Every time I’ve heard it, it came from an ugly person’s mouth, so I don’t care. The only ones lying about me having a mental illness are people I don’t talk to.” Oh, cool. But what about the people close to you, Amanda, are they ugly, too?“I only have hot friends. They have my back until I die.” Cool, cool. So do you like get wasted with them or what?“I don’t drink. I’m allergic to alcohol."Oh man, tough break. That probably helps in losing the weight that you absolutely do not need to lose, huh?“I’m getting in shape for all the photo shoots. I like being 100 pounds…...

Spoiler alert! Before you read our exclusive interview with Joelle Carter, Justified’s Ava Crowder, make sure you’ve watched this week’s episode, “Peace of Mind,” written by Taylor Elmore and Leonard Chang and directed by Gwyneth Horder-Payton. With Drew Thompson now in custody, the mad scramble continues as Ellen May (Abby Miller) is on the run with Raylan (Timothy Olyphant) Nicky Augustine (Mike O’Malley) and Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins) giving chase. Carter spoke with us about “Peace of Mind” as well as many memorable scenes throughout the season.
BuzzFocus: Let’s jump right in and talk about last night’s episode, “Peace of Mind,” an outstanding episode for Ava Crowder, who returned to the Noble’s Holler with $500,000 of Theo Tonin’s money to get Ellen May and it ends up in another friendship destruction for Ava.

"The closer you look, the less you'll see." I guess the designer took that statement literally. Summit's new poster for Now You See Me, the Louis Leterrier-directed illusionist heist thriller with quite an ensemble cast, has been unveiled. Everyone from Jesse Eisenberg to Woody Harrelson to Mark Ruffalo to Isla Fisher to Dave Franco to Morgan Freeman to Michael Caine and yes, even Mélanie Laurent, have a spot on it. The only ones missing are Common, Elias Koteas and Michael Kelly. This is one of my most anticipated movies of the summer, and I like the unique design - I just wish they were pushing the concept a little bit further to go along with the tricky illusions seen in the film. But it's likely the first of many posters. Thanks to IMPAwards for finding on Fandango. You can still see the first trailer for Now You See Me here.

Nicki, it’s really not acceptable that you showed up fifteen minutes late to ‘American Idol’ on March 13, looking like a hot mess, because you claimed you were stuck in traffic.
On the March 13 live show of American Idol, the top ten came ready to perform. However, Nicki Minaj, you weren’t ready to work. It’s time to really step it up as a judge.
Nicki, you tweeted that you were running late to last night’s show due to being stuck in traffic. For the viewers, the other judges, and the performers to take you seriously, you need to show up on time, if not early.
While you were apparently stuck in traffic, you could have at least changed into something other than a black hoodie and huge sunglasses. It looked unprofessional and was disrespectful to the performers that you would keep your hood up the entire time.

After sitting through the "epic" Mariah-Nicki catfight that wasn't on Wednesday, American Idol decided to cut us a break by only subjecting us to one hour of auditions in Baton Rouge. It's the home of the Dawg, and Randy is hoping the bayou doesn't do him dirty.
But seriously, how little do the audition shows really mean? Apparently the ratings were down initially, but it's because no one remembers the audition people anyway. Hollywood and Las Vegas weeks are entertaining, but no one really cares until the live shows begin. That's when singers start to stand out and develop. There might be one or two auditions that stick in your mind, but for the most part, the clutter of previously featured performers and really talented newbies who we never saw just make it difficult to keep track of everything.

Five On Film is an occasional feature on “Hey You Geeks!!” where directors, writers, actors or just plain awesome advocates of geek culture are asked five questions in line with the theme of their current work. In this edition, I chat about action films and Arnold Schwarzenegger with The Last Stand screenwriter Andrew Knauer.
Knauer wrote The Last Stand to celebrate the action film as it should be; explosive, witty and R rated. Once it was chosen to be the vehicle for Arnold Schwarzenegger’s return to top billed action star, the film quickly became one of the most anticipated of 2013. The Last Stand has already received some promising pre-release praise for its 80′s action sensibilities and use of practical effects. Ahead of its release this Friday, I asked Knauer to speak about his favorite action films and what it means to have action’s most iconic star cast in his film.

As expected, reps for actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt are denying reports that he’ll be playing Batman in the Justice League film scheduled for 2015, or making a cameo in Zack Snyder’s Superman film Man of Steel in 2013. Like I said yesterday, this is to be expected. The only ones who would and could make that official would be Warner Bros, and they too are as quiet as a church mouse about the future of the Batman character. And while it’s obvious the WB holds Christopher Nolan’s trilogy with high regard and would probably really not do anything to piss him off, we know that there will be a new Batman for that Jla film, a Batman that will probably have no connection to Nolan’s series. Still, hiring Gordon-Levitt to play Batman –or even Robin as others have suggested- is something the WB can do without consulting with Nolan.

Former "Saturday Night Live" cast member Victoria Jackson is not afraid to air her radical conservative views. However, she is aware that not everyone working in show business is as vocal as she is, saying an underground network of conservative stars exists in Hollywood.
“In La, there is a secret, underground group of showbiz conservatives. It started with two people in 2000. I was at the fifth or tenth meeting, and now there are over 2,000 people,” Victoria tells me. “The only ones out of the closet are Jon Voight and Pat Boone. There are famous people in there, but they don’t want to lose their career -- and conservatives are blacklisted.”
Jackson refused to name any other celebrities in the "secret, underground group."
Claiming that it is very hard to be even a moderate conservative in the entertainment business, Jackson says it’s much easier to be accepted as a scientologist or homosexual.

Even though Nintendo previously confirmed the Wii U will be able to support two GamePads at the same time, it appears they will not be offering the tablet-style controllers as a standalone purchase. The only ones gamers in the U.S. will be able to get are the ones that come packaged with the Wii U console.
Thankfully, it won't always be this way. Once there are games available that support the use of two GamePad controllers, Nintendo will start putting them on store shelves.
"Through the launch window, there are no games that leverage a second controller. And so, during the launch window here in Noa [Nintendo of America] territories, we will not be selling at retail a second gamepad," Nintendo of America CEO Reggie Fils-Aime told investors during a recent Q&A. "But certainly, when the games come out, we'll be making that accessory available."

To celebrate the release of Dredd 3D in UK Cinemas from this Friday September 7th, What Culture are pleased to announce that we exclusively have one poster of the film to give away to our readers, signed by the masked man himself Karl Urban. We also have Dredd books to give away to the winner and some runners-up.
Written by Alex Garland (28 Days Later, The Beach) and directed by Pete Travis (Vantage Point), Dredd also stars Olivia Thirlby and Lena Heady.
Here’s the official synopsis for the movie;
The future. America is an irradiated wasteland. On its East Coast, running from Boston to Washington DC lies Mega City One a vast, violent metropolis of over 400 million citizens living in perpetual fear. The only ones attempting to impose order in the urban chaos are The Judges. Law enforcers, juries, judges and executioners rolled into one. The epitome of these Judges is Dredd.

The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie is a landmark film, truly one of the greatest ever made and perhaps filmmaker Luis Buñuel’s finest (it’s certainly my favorite of his). It’s also so much fun. Buñuel’s anger at institutions was long and storied, and his films were frequently calls for outright anarchy, but Discreet Charm was a turn away from the bitterness and meanness of films like The Exterminating Angel or Los Olvidados towards a genial bemusement at the absurdity of upper-class life. Telling the story of a group of friends whose attempts to get together for dinner are thwarted first by simple misunderstandings, and later by more elaborate, surreal interventions, you get the sense that he’s somewhere, just offscreen, laughing at the whole endeavor, and inviting us to do likewise.
So for those of the opinion that a filmmaker must love or sympathize with his characters,...
