The North American premiere of the film >A Single Shot was shown at the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival, which stars Sam Rockwell as hunter John Moon. The 116 minute film was shot in Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States and was directed by David Rosenthal. Written by Matthew F. Jones (who also wrote the book), the film follows the hunter as he accidentally kills a young woman and finds a large amount of money on her. Sam Rockwell is one of the greatest actors working today. If you’re not already in agreement with me, look over his diverse body of work. Rockwell has killed roles, both lead and supporting, in movies as weird as Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, as shattering as Conviction, and as breathtakingly original as Moon. Along the way, he’s played integral parts in classics like The Green Mile and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. He’s one of my favorite actors because, no matter how many great roles I see him in, he just sells it every time.
A Single Shot, a relentlessly bleak and atmospheric noir drama, is no exception. As hunter John Moon, who accidentally shoots and kills a young woman, only to uncover a huge amount of money she was guarding, Rockwell is absolutely terrific. It’s a very physical part for the actor,...

David M. Rosenthal’s A Single Shot joins the ranks of some superior 2013 thrillers, the uniting factor being their complete grasp of a sense of place and time and their ability to unconditionally exploit their setting for the benefit of the story and characters. Mud, The Frozen Ground, Scenic Route and now this poetic backwoods chiller all place a compelling central character in a potentially life threatening ordeal, surrounds them with superior supporting players and executes their motives and actions with fluidity and respect. This year has so far seen a resurgence in this type of yarn – a stripped down, character based story that extracts its involving tenseness through simple actions, not bombast and explosions.

Frequent moviegoers have gotten used to seeing Sam Rockwell play smart and funny characters in a wide variety of movies, but more recently, he's had more success with comedic roles like the one in the recent Sundance hit The Way, Way Back . As much as it's always fun to see Rockwell's trademark wit on screen, he's an actor first and foremost so it's just as great seeing him do more dramatic roles like the one he plays in David M. Rosenthal's A Single Shot . Based on the novel by Matthew Jones, who adapted it into a screenplay, Rockwell plays John Moon, a solitary hunter who accidentally shoots a young woman who has in her possession a box full of money. It doesn't take long before the criminals that the money belongs to--including Jason Isaacs, almost unrecognizable with a...

A Single Shot
Written by Matthew F. Jones
Directed by David M. Rosenthal
USA, 2013
Sam Rockwell’s secret weapon is not his gift of gab, but his ability to use that chatty nature to disarm everyone around him. Rockwell, so rakish and charming in this summer’s indie hit The Way, Way Back, isn’t the kind of actor who can’t play taciturn, but deliberately robbing him of his quirky, squirrelly speech patterns is always a bit of a letdown. As such, so too is A Single Shot, a grim, drab crime drama with Rockwell playing strong and silent at the center, leaning too heavily on the latter quality.
Rockwell is John Moon (a nice, if unintentional, nod to one of his best films, the 2009 sci-fi drama Moon), an estranged husband and father living in the hills of West Virginia in a nondescript little shack. One morning, while on the hunt for some deer,...

Get ready to see a different side of Sam Rockwell. Well known for his goofy charm in movies such as this summer's "The Way Way Back" and as a suave bad guy in "Charlie's Angels" and "Iron Man 2," Rockwell's role in this weekend's indie "A Single Shot" could come as a shock. He plays John Moon, a West Virginian man who finds himself in a spot of trouble after he accidentally murders a young woman while hunting in the woods. Soon, he's the one being hunted.
We caught up with Rockwell prior to the movie's release, chatting on his trademark dance moves, the thick West Virginia accent he adopted for the role and the power of a good beard.
Talk to me a little bit about "A Single Shot." You're known for playing a very different kind of role than the very countrified, rough character in John Moon.

Briefcases full of money are bad news. Terrible news, even. If you see a briefcase full of money, run as far away from it as you can, and maybe stay inside for a few days just to be safe. You will not get to keep the money. Others will die because of you, and ultimately, you will die too, probably in a grisly fashion. After No Country for Old Men, A Simple Plan, Fargo and, thematically speaking, Treasure of the Sierra Madre, this advice really should not need repeating. In fact, for years, movies have hammered away at this theme more consistently and mercilessly than almost any other. And yet, here we go again. The hapless suitcase-full-of-money-finder in A Single Shot is John Moon, a...

Chicago – Sam Rockwell does no wrong. He takes parts in movies major (“Iron Man 2”) and minor (“A Single Shot,” now available On Demand and opening theatrically in limited release this Friday, September 20, 2013) and makes decisions that other actors wouldn’t even consider. He is so completely, believably in the moment.
You don’t see the wheels turning like you do in so many other actor’s performances. He feels natural even in incredibly unnatural situations. He’s the best thing about “A Single Shot,” a film with echoes of “A Simple Plan” & “Winter’s Bone,” elevating it above its flaws as he has done for other films so many times before.
Rating: 3.0/5.0
Finding the deep emotional territory that he hasn’t really mined since his underrated work in “Snow Angels,” Rockwell plays the deeply haunted John Moon, an average guy in a rural community who seems on the edge...

Even before John Moon, the lonely woodsman played by Sam Rockwell at the center of David M. Rosenthal's "A Single Shot," accidentally shoots a young woman while hunting the desolate area near his trailer, his world has fallen apart. Rosenthal's adaptation of Matthew F. Jones' 1996 novel features a familiar arrangement of criminal events and showdowns, but the movie compensates for much of its familiar shortcomings with an effectively ominous atmosphere. The opening minutes, in which the grave-faced, bearded John roams the countryside in search of prey, establish a sense of isolation that dominates the movie and nearly rescues it from the formula that eventually takes shape. Following that inadvertent death, John scrambles to hide the body before discovering a pile of money in the late woman's tent. In a desperate bid to win back his estranged wife (Kelly Reilly) and their young child, John stashes the money, only...

If the movies have taught us anything, it's this: Don't expect an easy time of hanging on to satchels of cash you find in the woods. David M. Rosenthal's sturdy, nasty rural noir, based on Matthew F. Jones's novel, is so sharp and rusted through that, after taking it in, you'll likely need a tetanus shot. After he accidentally shoots and kills a woman while hunting in the forest near his trailer home, abandoned family man John Moon (Sam Rockwell) happens upon a gun, a note, and a retirement fund's worth of stacked C-notes. Complications ensue, of course, especially after John sends some cash to the wife who wants nothing to do with him anymore. (She's played by Kelly Reilly, who is given little to work with.) He gets phone threats; his friends, mostly bearded roughnecks, behave like ma...

A Single Shot looks like an incredibly intense thriller, and Sam Rockwell is sure to give an incredible performance. Three character posters have been released for the film featuring Rockwell, William H. Macy, and Jason Isaacs. Here's what the movie is about, and I've also included the trailer at the bottom.
David M. Rosenthal’s white-knuckle thriller starts with a bang: a single shot, aimed at a lone deer, that hits and kills a young woman. A few years ago, a little film by the name of No Country For Old Men swept the nation, winning just about every award a film can win with the story of a blue-collar man stumbling upon a fortune that other, more dangerous men seek. Later this summer, A Single Shot will revisit that theme, pitching Sam Rockwell against a group of criminals after he discovers their money through a fatal accident.
The similarities between the two films are striking, but based on how well received the former was, and the fact that the latter has Sam Rockwell in its corner, A Single Shot will most likely be a hit. It’s already made a splash at the Tribeca Film Festival, and after its release on iTunes on August 20th, it might find an even larger audience. A limited theatrical run will begin a month later on September 20th.

A Single Shot
USA, 2013
Directed by David M. Rosenthal
When John Moon (Sam Rockwell) accidentally shoots a young woman and discovers a bag full of cash, he has to make the fateful decision whether to provide for his separating family or come out clean. His struggle to conceal both the death and the money formulates a whirlwind of consequences that ultimately heightens into a battle for survival. With overall great performances by Rockwell and Jeffrey Wright (Simon), the film is both widely suspenseful and comfortably predictable. Treading the line of a Hitchcockian thriller, the film definitely tests the limits of an ordinary man as he takes on plight to stay alive. With some of the year’s most surprising scenes, A Single Shot will bring you to the edge of your seat and shock you, making it by far one of the best films debuted at Tribeca 2013 this year.

A gun. A dead woman. A box of money. A (sort of) innocent man. A hunt. While David M. Rosenthal’s A Single Shot doesn’t shy away from some conventional-to-the-point-of-cliché plot points for his latest feature, the crime drama packs a punch thanks to its stellar cast, stunning cinematography, and a horror-tinged score that continually leaves its audience on edge. Oh, and the violence. Did we forget the violence? There’s violence. Penned by Matthew F. Jones (who adapted his own novel for the script), A Single Shot is a suitably intense showcase for star Sam Rockwell’s dramatic chops. As lonely loser John Moon, the film rests on the actor’s ability to engage and excite his audience, a feat that he mostly pulls off with ease. A near-wordless opening sequence plunges us deep into both John’s day-to-day life and the shocking event that will turn everything upside down for him, as...

David M. Rosenthal’s anticipated A Single Shot premiered out in Berlin earlier in the year, and the early reviews have been very promising.
Descriptions of ‘noir’ and ‘haunting’ qualities abounded from the Berlinale back in February, and it’s a film I’ve been looking forward to even more since its debut.
Sam Rockwell takes the lead of a brilliant cast. And whilst we’re still not yet sure about when we can expect it to arrive in theatres, the first teaser trailer has debuted online, and it’s as powerful as you’d expect it to be.

Descriptions of ‘noir’ and ‘haunting’ qualities abounded from the Berlinale back in February, and it’s a film I’ve been looking forward to even more since its debut.

Sam Rockwell is a kick-ass actor that is excellent in anything he does. Last year he did a couple of great movies, that included some of the best characters he's ever played. Those films were Seven Psychopaths and The Way Way Back, the latter of which is officially coming out later this year.
Here's a teaser trailer for his latest film, a solid looking thriller called A Single Shot. As you'll see in the trailer it kind of has that same dark atmospheric tone as Jennifer Lawrence's Winter's Bone. The film is based on Matthew F. Jones’ 1996 novel. Here's the plot summary...

Plot: After the loss of his family farm, John Moon (Rockwell) is a desperate man. A master hunter, his ability to poach game in-season or out is the only thing that stands between him and the soup kitchen line. Until Moon trespasses on the wrong land, hears a rustle in the brush, and fires a single fateful shot. The new movie is directed by David M. Rosenthal and already premiered at the Berlin Film Festival. It's now set to appear at Tribeca Film Festival later this month. Trailer:...

In 2011, writer-director David M. Rosenthal won notice at the Tribeca Film Festival with his music-fueled feature Janie Jones, which starred Abigail Breslin and Alessandro Nivola in an unconventional family drama. This year he's returning to the fast-approaching fest with A Single Shot. Matthew F. Jones adapts his own crime novel into a seemingly chilling thriller that stars Sam Rockwell as a desperate man. Last spring when Rockwell signed on to play John Moon, a role Michael Fassbender was formerly slated to play. Moon is an impoverished poacher whose hunting skills keep him in trouble but free from starvation. However, hunting off-season can be dangerous for reasons beyond crossing paths with forest rangers. With the titular single shot, Moon kicks off a chain of events that bring more heat on his tail than he'd ever imagined. A Single Shot boasts an incredible supporting cast that includes Jeffrey Wright, Jason Isaacs, Academy...

This movie looks chilling, especially the shot of river. Sam Rockwell’s cold performance is a complete transformation from his energetic persona in the movie Seven Psychopaths (2012). See some additional stills attached at the end (from the official Facebook page).

Though the development process wound up stretching across a couple of years, with a few actors coming and going along the way, it's hard to argue with the impressive lineup David M. Rosenthal ("Janie Jones") assembled for "A Single Shot": Sam Rockwell, Jeffrey Wright, Jason Isaacs, William H. Macy, Melissa Leo, Kelly Reilly ("Flight," "Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows") and Ophelia Lovibond ("No Strings Attached," "London Boulevard"). Not too shabby at all. And while it was one of our most anticipated movies of the Berin International Film Festival, the end result didn't exactly win us over, but you'll soon be able to judge for yourself. The first trailer for the movie has dropped, and it certainly highlights mood over plot or anything else. Based on the book by Matthew F. Jones, the story follows Rockwell's John Moon, a hunter who accidentally shoots a teenage girl and then discovers...

Later this year, audiences will get a chance to see Sam Rockwell have some fun as he helps Liam James work through some social anxiety over a tumultuous summer turned life-changing experience in The Way, Way Back (read my Sundance review here). But before that, he's getting gritty and serious in A Single Shot, which is playing at the Tribeca Film Festival later this month after premiering in Berlin earlier this year. In the film Rockwell plays John Moon, who gets involved in an accidental crime, all while trying to get his family back together. It looks pretty tense and seems to showcase the raw talent of Rockwell yet again. Here's the Tribeca trailer for David M. Rosenthal's A Single Shot, found via The Film Stage: A Single Shot is directed by David M. Rosenthal (Janie Jones) and written by Matthew F. Jones, who adapted his own 1996 novel of the same name.

Based on the novel by Matthew F. Jones, A Single Shot is a dark and moody tale about the moral choices one has to make in the face of temptation, murder, and survival. Starring Sam Rockwell as John Moon, a master hunter who knows how to poach game in-season and out, the story unfolds as a single shot fired in the woods changes the lives of many surrounding the consequences of the bullet, especially Moon. The film, directed by David M. Rosenthal, is set to debut at The Tribeca Film...

A simple man, a tragic accident and Sam Rockwell – that’s what A Single Shot is all about! Ok, to be honest, David M. Rosenthal‘s upcoming movie has an awesome cast on board, the story sounds promising as well, but probably the best thing is that we finally have the first teaser trailer for this crime drama! Check it out & let us know what you think… As you probably know, the movie is actually an adaptation of Matthew Jones‘ novel of the same name, which revolves around a simple man named John Moon who, while stalking a deer out of season, accidentally shoots and...

The door is almost closed on the 63rd International Berlin Film Festival and while none of this year's awards have yet to be handed out, you can find all of our reviews from the festival below. Indiewire's Eric Kohn was in Berlin where he reviewed eleven of this year's entries, including Wong Kar-Wai's "The Grandmaster" which opened the festival. Also included are seven reviews written from Sundance and elsewhere of films that screened during this year's Berlinale and a review for Steven Soderbergh's "Side Effects," which had its' European premiere during the festival. Berlin: Director David M. Rosenthal Talks Backwoods Noir 'A Single Shot,' Starring Rockwell and Macy
“I wasn’t one of these directors who knew at the age of 8 that they wanted to be a director,” said David M. Rosenthal over a large plate of currywurst and fries in the cafe at Berlin’s Grand Hyatt Hotel. “I was a photo geek in high school, the photo editor of the newspaper, and that’s how I kind of started to see the world through a lens.” Rosenthal is in der Stadt for the Berlinale, where his new film "A Single Shot" premiered Saturday night. (My review is here; THR director's roundtable, pictured, is here.) Starring Sam Rockwell, Jeffrey Wright and William H. Macy, "Shot" is a taut backwoods thriller, dark and dank and dirty, set in the kind of country place where shit tends to happen. In this case, that shit happens to Rockwell’s John Moon, a man living on the edge – of a forest,...

Sam Rockwell's performance as a backwoods loner who finds a stash of money after accidentally shooting a camper brings life to this overheated thriller screened at the Berlin film festival
Sam Rockwell puts in a tremendous shift as a bearded loner who stumbles across some very nasty bad guys in this tough, macabre, but somewhat overcooked thriller. Rockwell plays John Moon, a shotgun-wielding trailer-dweller who is scrabbling an isolated existence in a remote patch of woodland: not because he's a Unabomber-type radical survivalist, but because his wife has dumped him, he can't hold down a job and he's too proud to work for the new owner of the farm his parents lost to the bank years earlier.
Moon's specific troubles, for the purposes of this film, begin when he's out trying to poach deer in a nature conservation park. A couple of ill-advised volleys into a shrub, and...

★★★☆☆ Based on Matthew F. Jones' dark and atmospheric novel of the same name, David M. Rosenthal's A Single Shot (2013) finally makes it's debut at this year's Berlin Film Festival. Staring Us actor Sam Rockwell and boasting an enticing supporting cast that includes William H. Macy, Kelly Reilly and Jason Isaacs, A Single Shot is, despite its evident qualities, a film that ironically misses the mark. John Moon (Rockwell) spends his days alone in his isolated trailer lamenting the recent exodus of his family, breaking the monotony of his wearisome life by entering the neighbouring forest and partaking in some prohibited deer hunting.
