The Black List founder and CEO Franklin Leonard.
The top scripts from Warner Bros, The Black List and Veerhuis Pictures’ second iteration of the Australian Scriptwriting Opportunity have been unveiled, with each of the writing teams now in consideration for a two-step blind feature film deal with WB.
This years “Aussie List” features 11 scripts rather than 10, given Maziar Lahooti, last year’s co-recipient of the blind deal, remarkably made it in again, this time as a solo writer.
More than 250 writing teams opted-in their scripts for the 2019 opportunity via The Black List, with each evaluated and rated via the site’s industry readers and processes. Producer Chris Veerhuis of Wa-based Veerhuis Pictures will now work with WB to determine from the list the recipient(s), if any, of the WB script deal. That opportunity will commit a writer to write a new script (first draft and a rewrite) for WB.

Space elevators are apparently the real deal. Essentially gigantic freight hauling lifts tethered to space stations, space elevators have persisted as an idea in scientific and engineering circles since first proposed in 1895 - despite all the advances in space travel since then. Now comes an ambitious sci-fi short set in the shadow of a giant space elevator, in a dystopian future where the poorer classes are left to scavenge on the outskirts of sprawling launch stations, while those more powerful live within the gates and within reach of an exit from Earth. This short, Payload, is written and directed by Stuart Willis, an Australian vfx guru who cut his teeth working on Superman Returns, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Australia, The Square and Happy Feet Two. The Melbourne Underground Film Festival returns to terrorize Australia with a selection of outrageous genre films for its 11th annual edition that will be held on Aug. 20-28.
For years now, Muff Festival director Richard Wolstencroft has been bemoaning the state of Australian cinema — and rightfully so — for abandoning its history of popular genre entertainment and settling for a state-sponsored industry of wussy indie fare. Well, looking over this year’s Muff schedule from a distance, it appears that the fest has gathered its most impressive lineup of bold and risky genre fare yet.
There’s the deep sea terror of Stuart Simpson’s El monstro del mar!, the outback nightmare of Road Train by Dean Francis, the Bdsm fantasy world of David King’s Purge, the chaotically violent world of Bad Behavior by Joseph Sims, the sexy and disturbing Burlesque by Dominic Deacon; plus Richard Wolstencroft’s own documentary...
