It’s a chilly Sunday night in Manhattan’s West Village and somehow the hottest ticket in town involves a sexually repressed Abraham Lincoln, hoop skirts, and comedian Cole Escola in a wildly convincing nineteenth-century wig.
There’s a line down the block outside the Lucille Lortel Theatre, and inside, the energy builds as patrons make their way through packed halls and walkways to their seats. Queer isn’t just a vibe here, it’s built into the streets — just three blocks from the Stonewall Inn — etched into the gold stars on the sidewalk,...

Join in the cosmic cantata, and take a trip to Schmicago!
On Schmigadoon! Season 2 Episode 3, Josh gets groovy with the hippies, Melissa meets the residents of Quick Street, and Bobby razzle-dazzles the courtroom.
It's so consistently impressive how much they cram into 30 minutes and still come up with a coherent narrative.
Cinco Paul's cleverness with lyrics comes into play in every song here. He's got internal rhymes up the shoobie-doobie, and the double meaning of "The Worst Brats In Town" -- sausages and children -- is just too good.
On Quick Street, we have Alan Cumming and Kristin Chenoweth as Sweeney and Mrs. Lovett... er, Dooley Blight and Miss Codwell, who is also Miss Hannigan from Annie.
Cumming leans into the melodrama of Dooley Blight, evoking more sympathy than menace. Vocally, both of them are at ease with the weird intricacies of the Sondheimesque score.

Some people just want fundamentally different things from musicals. For those who want to see precision petticoat dancing and go home whistling a little ditty about vegetables, “Schmigadoon!” couldn’t have been more of a godsend. Made with the sun-drenched breeziness of a Technicolor classic from the first half of the 20th century, the show followed longtime couple Melissa (Cecily Strong) and Josh (Keegan-Michael Key) as they teetered on the edge of a breakup. But after spending some time in the magical, mythical world of Schmigadoon, some small-town wisdom from the locals helped them reframe their priorities and rekindle their love for each other. Lessons learned, smiles achieved.
“Schmigadoon!” Season 2 finds Josh and Melissa in a slightly different state. They’re married now, but something is a little off. Now finding themselves a second time in a mystical place at the end of a foggy bridge, their new temporary home...

For the last two decades, Cinco Paul (along with writing partner Ken Daurio) was best known for writing big-deal family movies your kids were begging you to take them to. But all the while he had a musical percolating in his head, partially based upon a what-if set-up involving the backpackers of “An American Werewolf in London” entering a musical-scape instead of a horror-scape. And thus, 2021’s hit AppleTV+ series “Schmigadoon!” — starring Cecily Strong and Keegan-Michael Key in a far less furry, significantly more comic version of the “London” scenario — was born.
Also starring a veritable who’s who of Broadway talent and borrowing liberally from the Great American Musical heyday of shows like “The Music Man,” “Carousel” and “The Sound of Music” among a great many others, “Schmigadoon!” proved popular enough for fans to demand a second season, which just wrapped and will be entitled “Schmicago!” Showrunner Cinco Paul...

The exclamation point seen in the title cards of the new musical comedy “Schmigadoon!” isn’t just a nod to Rodgers & Hammerstein (a short overture even figures in), it’s a full-on attitude in this fitfully jubilant slice of whimsy. A six-episode summer trifle — much like the various pies and pastries fervently pushed by locals in the nominal town — it can sometimes be a bit of a toothache, but the series is also just as often irresistible, with a tremendously committed, blue-chip cast working at the peak of their powers.
Melissa and Josh (Cecily Strong and Keegan-Michael Key) are an on-the-rocks couple, both physicians (an aspect that doesn’t pay off completely), trying to reignite their sparkless relationship by signing up for a retreat, and after a backpacking sojourn where they go way too deep into the woods (heh heh), find themselves in an all singing-all dancing Golden Age musical hamlet.

Hulu’s Head of Originals Beatrice Springborn is leaving the streamer after six years to become President of UCP.
Springborn, who has shepherded series including The Handmaid’s Tale and Normal People to screen, takes over from Dawn Olmstead, who is leaving to join Anonymous Content as CEO.
The move means that Universal Studio Group, now run by Pearlena Igbokwe, has named two of the three executives to run its divisions. Last week, it was revealed that Erin Underhill was promoted to President of Universal Television, the division previously run by Igbokwe. It is still searching for a boss for NBCUniversal International Studios following the departure of Jeff Wachtel.

‘Fire Tucker Carlson’: Fox News Host Condemned for Comments on Deadly Shooting of Kenosha Protesters
Fox News host Tucker Carlson received immediate backlash on Twitter after saying Kyle Rittenhouse, who was arrested and charged with first-degree intentional homicide for the shootings of two protesters in Kenosha, Wis., “decided to maintain order when no one else would.”
“Are we really surprised this looting and arson accelerated to murder? How shocked are we that 17-year-olds with rifles decided they had to maintain order when no one else would? Everyone can see what was happening in Kenosha. It was getting crazier by the hour,” Carlson said on his show.
Video from Carlson’s Wednesday night Fox News broadcast went viral on Twitter, with many people speaking out against his comments and saying he should be fired.
Billy Eichner, Ike Barinholtz and Julie Klausner were among the entertainment-industry figures calling for Carlson to be fired.

Billy Eichner will write and star in a gay romantic comedy from Judd Apatow’s production company for Universal Pictures. “Neighbors” and “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” director Nick Stoller is set to direct and co-produce under his banner with Apatow Productions, Global Solutions. The cancellation of Difficult People left a gaping hole in our hearts. The Hulu original series about two failed comedians, actors, etc. (Billy Eichner & Julie Klausner) brought out our most cynical selves, our razor sharp wit, and scratched that itch many contemporary comedies were not reaching for. Indeed, it’s been tough coping with this loss.
However, Chris Kelly and Sarah Schneider (both writers from Saturday Night Live) have sensed our grief. The premiere of their Comedy Central series The Other Two, might somehow fill that Difficult pop culture void. After their teenage brother becomes an overnight celebrity when his YouTube video goes viral, siblings Cary (Drew Tarver) and Brooke (Heléne Yorke) – a struggling actor and dancer respectively – must define what success means to them.
If that sounds trite, fear not. Because here are five reasons why The Other Two is essential 2019 television...

Kevin Spacey’s return to social media on December 24 caused a stir in Hollywood, with directors and fellow actors using their own Twitter pages to ridicule the actor over his decision to release a bizarre video in character as Frank Underwood. The three-minute clip featured Spacey seemingly rebuking the sexual assault allegations made against him, but doing so under the guise of his “House of Cards” character.
“Of course, some believed everything and have just been waiting with bated breath to hear me confess at all,” Spacey-as-Underwood says in the video. “They’re just dying to have me declare everything said is true and I got what I deserved. Wouldn’t that be easy? If it was all so simple. Only you and I both know it’s never that simple, not in politics, not in life. But you wouldn’t believe the worst without evidence would you? Hulu experienced a transformative year in 2017, leading up to the Primetime Emmy Awards that changed everything for the streamer. “The Handmaid’s Tale” won the ultimate prize, Outstanding Drama, giving Hulu the honors of first streamer to take home an outstanding series Emmy — before rivals Netflix and Amazon.

In a year when the growing role of Netflix in Hollywood raised age-old fears about the death of cinema, the question of what is television versus a movie versus a web series grew ever murkier. As younger audiences become increasingly blasé about the difference, preferring streaming sites to the movie theater experience, production companies are scrambling to engage them with quality online content. At the same time, the internet remains the easiest way for emerging filmmakers to get their work seen without having to rely on meddling middlemen or jaded gatekeepers.

“Difficult People” is getting some tough news.
Hulu has canceled the Julie Klausner-created comedy series after three seasons.
Klausner stars with Billy Eichner on the show that premiered in August 2015. Its third season debuted in August 2017.
The series centers on Julie Kessler (Klausner) and Billy Epstein (Eichner), two struggling comedians who seemingly dislike everyone they encounter except for each other. Executive producers for the Universal Cable Productions project include Klausner and Amy Poehler, along with 3 Arts’ Dave Becky. Becky apologized Monday for how he initially responded to accusations.
