Idol's Paul Jolley on the Bon Jovi Cover You Never Heard and the Full Story Behind His Beatles Track
If Paul Jolley ran things on American Idol, his Season 12 trajectory might have looked and sounded very different.
The recently ejected ninth-place finisher sat down for an Idology interview where he discussed a possible solution to the show’s sometimes tired theme weeks, the Bon Jovi song he’d prefered to have tackled instead of Lonestar’s “Amazed,” and his feelings on rival Lazaro Arbos covering the same Keith Urban track he’d picked in the Season 12 Vegas Rounds.

There've been complaints that last night's American Idol, themed around the hits and performances of past Idol winners, was old-fashioned and schmaltzy. Hey, morons: That's why I watchAmerican Idol. I want ancient, Wayne Newton-y performances from Mormon teenagers in pain. I want the new Rosemary Clooney to woo me in a collared denim dress that her great-grandmother weaved. I want singers who pick songs by Kenny Rogers or Alannah Myles to feel "naughty." Bring me the home-schooled!
I loved last night's episode, even when truly awful songs like Ruben Studdard's "Flying Without Wings" threatened to curbstomp us with hopelessness. For me, ranking the top 10 was a cinch -- though apparently I disagree with most of you about how interesting Angela Miller is. Guys, her emotions range from "happy" to "happy, but quiet sometimes." Come on.
One last note before I write another 200 words about Lazaro Arbos that amount to "Good try,...

It's been a year of changes for American Idol, with new judges and tweaks to the format. Tonight, the Top 10 finalists have traveled back to Hollywood to begin fighting their way to first place.
This week's theme is "Songs of the Idols," which means any song that has been sung on the show by a previous winner or any song released by a winner, and they'll need to put their own twist on those songs to make them original. Our pal Jimmy Iovine will be back to mentor them along the way. Let's get to it...
Curtis Finch Jr. wants to be a modern day Luther Vandross. He channels his inner Mantasia and sings Fantasia's "I Believe." It's my opinion that the only person who comes close to doing as well on this song as Fantasia did was Joshua Ledet, and Curtis' performance falls short. The song never peaked...

Nicki Minaj was 15 minutes late to the live episode of ‘American Idol’ on March 13. Were You mad she wasn’t on time?
After Nicki Minaj was late to the live show because of traffic, she joined fellow judges Mariah Carey, Keith Urban and Randy Jackson on the panel to watch the Top 10 sing live! Who do You think did the best tonight, HollywoodLifers?
The Top 10 had to sing songs previously sung on Idol.
The Night Starts Off Slow
Curtis Finch Jr. sang “I Believe” by Fantasia. Keith said he always picks the right song and that he looked great! “I would caution you to try something a little bit different,” Randy warned.
Janelle Arthur – Randy said it wasn’t the greatest song choice. “I love the raw quality of your voice,” Mariah said.
Devin Velez sang “Temporary Home” by Carrie Underwood. “That was not one of your better performances,” Keith said.

Don’t get on Nicki Minaj’s case for showing up late to American Idol‘s Top 10 performance night. Let’s be honest: If you had known you were going to have to endure her fellow judges heaping praise (with a side dish of almost imperceptible criticism) on Curtis Finch Jr.’s dreary, off-key Fantasia cover, you’d have tuned in 10 minutes past the hour yourself.
Okay, okay…maybe we should throw a little shade at Nicki. I mean, how many millions of dollars is she paid for working three hours per week at The House That Kelly Clarkson Built?...

Some days, it’s depressingly easy to take the cynical approach to recapping American Idol: Like when Randy makes a “doo-doo” joke, or Steven bats over .500 in using “beautiful” to describe the night’s performances, or J.Lo serves her patented “intense/meaningful” facial expression with all the practiced ridiculousness of a RuPaul’s Drag Race contestant.
But after Wednesday night’s installment of Idol — during which the Season 11 Top 12 women took the stage — an altogether different kind of emotion is the order of the day: Earnest excitement.
Oh, sure, Randy still managed to deliver jaw-droppingly misguided/embarrassing references to Lauryn Hill,...

The ladies got their chance to shine on Wednesday night, and while some seized the moment, others shrunk from the spotlight.

One night after the guys got their chance to shine (with varying degrees of success) on "American Idol," it was time for the girls to step beneath the spotlight on Wednesday's two-hour telecast. And while some seized the moment, well, even more seemed to wilt under the pressure.
And sure, you could blame it on nerves, but with so much on the line — only five were guaranteed to make it through to the next round — let's just say there's going to be plenty of girls sweating it out during Thursday's (March 1) results show. Not even Adele could save them. Who delivered the goods? Here's our grades for the girls ... the good, the bad and the,...

Wednesday night was the girls night to shine on American Idol as their first live performances of the season took place. A half hour into the two hour broadcast, judge, Randy Jackson admitted that the judges gave “some passes in judgement” when the boys performed on Tuesday night. So the judges got their act together and took their roles as judges just a bit more seriously this time around. The night started off just as strong as boys’ night but it wasn’t until Hallie Day made her way to the stage that this became a broadcast worth watching. If Day doesn’t make it to the top 13, we mine as well turn the voting over to Vote for the Worst. But let’s get to those before Day for a moment…
Country music jump started the night as Chelsea Sorrell graced the stage with her best Carrie Underwood performance.

This just in: Randy Jackson made a huge mistake. I know, I know, you’ve been aware of that for a decade now, but the big news is that the Dawg actually admitted it on Wednesday night’s edition of American Idol.
Yes, fellow Idoloonies, the headmaster at Our Lady of Limited Vocabulary Preparatory School confessed to Ryan Seacrest that after watching Tuesday’s telecast — featuring performances from Season 11′s Top 13 guys — that maybe, just maybe he and his fellow judges could’ve been a little more critical. Ya think?

Tonight the Top 12 girls take the American Idol stage for their first taste at live performance.
And speaking of that stage- again - I had a thought today: Isn't this stage only used, typically, during the semifinalist rounds, which usually last much longer than this year's? Are we going to be seeing this stage again? Or did producers sink a ton of money into renovating this stage for one week of performances? Why do I even care?
These are the things I ponder while driving, y'all. Anyway, let's get to it. The girls have Contestant Cams and we've got songs to hear.
Chelsea Sorrell's up first. I'm from the south, but Chelsea? Chelsea's Southern. So Southern I can barely understand her. She tackles Carrie Underwood's "Cowboy Casanova." When you do a song by an Idol, the same rule applies regarding performing a current hit: you best do it better than the original.

Is it just us, or are your expectations higher for the women than the men at this stage of "American Idol"? We just feel like there are so many good females, while we not only didn't feel that way about the guys last night, but we also feel like several of the good ones kind of whiffed. Just us?
A "supersized" results show tomorrow night, Seacrest threatens promises. Can't wait. And then the girls are introduced and holy crap, have Baylie's girls always been that prominent? Good lord.
1. Chelsea Sorrell, "Cowboy Casanova," Carrie Underwood
Always bold, to pick a former "Idol's" song. Also, this one is kind of word salad at times, but she seems to handle that Ok. What she isn't handling very well are the high notes. She can't hit them. She's way under the notes. Since she's not one of the girls who's been heavily featured,...

No female has won since 2007, but the ladies proved on Wednesday that it may be their year to take back the crown.

It was ladies' night on "American Idol" Wednesday (February 29), and if the performances of the Top 12 females are any indication, it could be the ladies' season as well.
Indeed, Tuesday's shaky performances from the guys may have had fans worried about this year's installment of "Idol." But several ladies turned in big, show-stealing songs on Wednesday that restored faith to the season at hand. And while no female has won "Idol" since Jordin Sparks took the crown back in 2007, this could be the year a woman puts an end to that dry spell.
Fittingly, this potential female domination comes at a time when the biggest force in pop music is Adele, and the chart-topping diva's presence loomed large over Wednesday's show.

There are moments where The X Factor reminds me of a horror-movie version of an industrial farm-raised turkey: Genetically groomed and pumped full of steroids, bursting at the skin with muscle and sinew, and — if it could figure out how to better maneuver its unwieldy form — ready to burst from its cage and brutally flip the carnivore-Thanksgiving dinner relationship.
Indeed, Simon Cowell is to reality singing competitions what growth hormones are to poultry: Why settle for a dozen backup dancers when you can project the image of 1,000 hoofers against a backdrop? Why wait for the season finale to dump 20 tons of confetti on your contestants?...
