Music can make an average ad great. So why, Robin Hicks asks, is music the last thing a creative thinks about when writing an ad?
My favourite TV ad of the year so far is the Let Yourself Go spot for Kangaroo Island.
When it didn’t win Mumbrella’s Ad of the Month for March (it came third) I felt aggrieved for the agency that made it. But less so a week later when it emerged that the agency had paid celebrities to tweet nice things about its work.
Let Yourself Go is a stunning spot with lots of pretty images. But it would probably have had a similar effect on me if I’d watched a blank screen for 60 seconds.
John Baker of Adelaide ad agency Kwp!, which made the ad, told me that the music (Rise by Pearl Jam singer Eddie Vedder) “is 50% of the communication”. For me,...

Where personalities end and collaboration begins can be a difficult balance for any band, much less a collection of solo artists. Supergroups, after all, don’t get that way without heroic levels of individual ambition. Yet songwriter trio Seeker Lover Keeper’s debut album is as frictionless as a walk on the moon, full of the welcome sounds of mutual appreciation. The set finds Australian musicians Holly Throsby, Sarah Blasko and Sally Seltmann, each a success story down under, trading harmonies and influences on each other’s songs, an exchange that lends itself to challenged comfort zones. Seltmann, the sunny-voiced ...

The Opera House is hugely recognisable – but there are literally millions of people who visit it each year, who have never been to an actual performance there,” says Caroline David, producer of the Ship Song Project. Based upon Nick Cave’s “The Ship Song”, it is an online campaign that invited Australian and international musicians to pay homage to the theatre.
“The Opera House like all businesses needs to make money to survive, so the aim with this project was to de-mystify the House and make it accessible to everyone and in particular the youth market,” explains David, a producer at Exit Films. The film moves through both back and front of house, introducing performers such as Silverchair’s Daniel Johns, Kev Carmody, Sarah Blasko, Martha Wainwright, Sydney Symphony, The Temper Trap, The Australian Chamber Orchestra, and John Bell of Bell Shakespeare who all offered their time for free. On their scheduled shoot day,...

Three of Australia's leading female artists have collaborated to become a 'supergroup'. Friends Sarah Blasko, Sally Seltmann and Holly Throsby, who are collectively named Seeker Lover Keeper, have made a debut record that is due for release next month. According to The Daily Telegraph, the trio employed Dirty Three's Jim White to play drums on the CD, together with guitarist Shahzad Ismaily, who has worked with Tom Waits and Martha Wainwright. They also asked well-known actors Barry Otto, Aden Young and John Waters to mime three of their songs in videos rather than starring in them themselves. Blasko said: "Three (more)...

So I started that 10|25|50|75|100 series a month or two ago because I like a wide variety of years in my film blogging, but you have to restrain yourself somehow. You can't focus on all 100+ years of cinema at once! But yesterday on twitter WonderRobbie reminded me that it was the 30th anniversary of Xanadu today. Since y'all know I love the movie like crazy I figured a quick mention was in order. I've already written extensively about the movie, so let's just take a quick look at a few random progeny. It's had 30 years now to sink deep down into the DNA of pop culture.
Have you seen this parody which mixes the rollerskating musical with ... wait for it... Clint Eastwood's Million Dollar Baby ? That's right. It definitely has its moments though video parodies that stretch over a few minutes, rarely go viral. It's gotta be short, don'cha know?...
