After breaking out with Donnie Darko, director Richard Kelly followed it up with the wildly ambitious and sprawling post-9/11 exploration of a Bush-led America, Southland Tales, which has been dividing audiences ever since it premiered at Cannes Film Festival in 2006. After undergoing major edits since that infamous premiere, it wouldn’t open theatrically for nearly a year-and-a-half later, but now, nearly fifteen years later, not only are we going to see that Cannes cut, the director also has major plans to continue telling the story of this universe.
Yesterday, Kelly participated in a live global viewing party as the film launched on Mubi. Before things kicked off he confirmed his vision for the future of Southland Tales. Not only are new 4K restorations of the theatrical and Cannes cuts arriving, but he’s also secured the assets for a prequel film that mixes animation and live-action, using the graphic novels...

Writer: Aron Warner and Philip Gelatt

Publisher: Dark Horse Comics

There are few fears as penetrating to the psyche as isolation. The world is connected by an ethernet cable attached seemingly to our hearts. It’s becoming harder to find any solitary pleasures without feeling the need to reach into our pockets and see who is currently paying attention to us. The world has never been as small as it is today, making moments of solitary reflection truly special, yet still, companionship is only a click away. To be truly alone, completely lost, with no contact from anyone: the idea is terrifying.
What appears to be a cash in on the commercial and critical success of the film Gravity, Aron Warner’s Pariah is a different entity altogether. While the premise may be similar, astronauts stranded in space,...

With Hollywood turning more of its attention to the world of graphic novels for inspiration, I'll cast the spotlight on a new comic book each week that has the potential to pack a theater or keep you glued to your television screens. At the end of some "Adapt This" columns, you'll also find thoughts from the industry's top comic creators about the books they'd like to see make the jump from page to screen.
This Week's Book: The Light by Nathan Edmondson and Brett Weldele
The Premise: What if the light was your enemy and the darkness was your only safe haven? When something begins causing anyone who looks into the light to spontaneously combust, an unemployed welder and his teenage daughter set off across Oregon to escape the dangers of an artificially illuminated world. What they soon find out is that the light isn't the only threat that's out there.

We recently told you about the new Pariah comic book series from Aron Warner, Philip Gellat, and Brett Weldele; and today the creative team left some clues as to what’s coming in a series of gripping videos on the Pariah website.
The videos are confiscated diary entries (and confessions) from teenage Vitro fugitives on the run from the government soldiers who are determined to bring them in. Some of them are frightened and confused, others informed and willing to fight. In one heartbreaking video it is learned how a Vitro was turned in by his own parents.
The Vitros are a scattered population of a couple hundred teenagers with rapidly developed intelligence beyond anything imaginable, the side effect of an experimental genetic in vitro medicine. Fear and prejudice result in a general mistrust of Vitros and come to a boiling point when an explosion at a weapons lab employing...

And word has come of another genre-related comic series that's making its debut at this week's San Diego Comic-Con, this one entitled Pariah from the mind of Aron Warner, who is just coming off of Cirque 3D with James Cameron and whose Strange Weather Films is producing the Beasts of Burden film adaptation with Dark Horse Entertainment.
Warner's a busy guy indeed, and here are Pariah's details from the press release:
They’re not super powered, they’re just super smart. The teen protagonists who lead us through the world of Pariah, a twelve-book graphic novel series from the mind of Oscar-winning film producer Aron Warner and published by Sea Lion Books, are the next generation of heroes in the comic book world. Eisner-nominated illustrator Brett Weldele (The Surrogates) will bring the stories to life in ink, and Philip Gelatt will pen the scripts set in Warner’s world for the twelve books.

Shrek producer Aaron Warner will make his comics debut for Sea Lion Books. Pariah will see the Academy Award-winner joined by Eisner-nominated illustrator Brett Weldele and writer Philip Gellat. The twelve-book graphic novel series follows the adventures of a group of 'vitros' - genetically enhanced children with "beyond-human intelligence" - who go on the run after being framed for the release of a deadly virus. Warner said: "I came up with Pariah after reading an article about in vitro genetic manipulation. We take medications every day without fully understanding how they work. It's kind of terrifying if you think about it. "In Pariah, kids grow up with incredible intelligence as a side effect of modern 'cures'. The problem is that (more)...

The Amazing Spider-man | Marvel | W: Dan Slott | A: Humberto Ramos
For the past few years Marvel has led the way when it comes to the quality of comics available on Free Comic Book Day. This issue is a perfect jumping on point for new Spider-man fans, Slott and Ramos start with a Spidey recap and a double page spread of his origin. The main story is a classic hero controlled by villain verse hero fight, where Spidey, now lacking his spider-sense, must use his brains to defeat the villain and in doing so comes to realise that he needs combat training from Master of Kung-Fu – Shang Chi. The story ties into what Slott is current doing on Amazing Spider-man and leads into...

Richard Kelly recently appeared at Kevin Smith's Smodcastle in Hollywood California to present a screening of Southland Tales. Before the screening, Smith recorded a one and a half hour conversation with Kelly which begins with his childhood and spans his filmmaking career. It's a very interesting conversation and definitely worth checking out (you can listen to it online here [1]). One of the interesting takeaways from the conversation was the mention that Kelly still hopes to someday direct a movie adaptation of the Southland Tales prequel comic books. Actually, he's already written it -- twice! "There is another screenplay in place. It's funny because I wrote scripts that I handed over to Brett Weldele to illustrate for the graphic novel, and now I've taken that graphic novel and adapted it into a new screenplay, which is streamlined and more coherent. So it's becoming so meta that I don't know what''s reality anymore.

In Surrogates not too distance future, most of earth’s population will fold laundry, drop off the kids and do the horizontal jiggy through remote-controlled robots called surrogates. Humanoid in its appearance, the technology allows their human operators the safety and relaxation of knowing that they’re protected within the confines of their home while their better-looking extensions are taking care of business. Whatever business that is, is practically up to the operator.
Violent crime, class and race issues have been erased from daily lives along with other annoyances such as looking ugly and dealing with blemishes. Times are great for this wacky dystopian look at us until two operators die when their fancy surries are destroyed. Luckily for humanity, FBI agents Thomas Greer (Bruce Willis) and Jennifer Peters (Radha Mitchell) are on the case.

Surrogates just hit DVD and it is what it is. It’s an action-sci-fi flick with a few thrills, lots of action and my favourite one man wrecking machine Bruce Willis. I will apologize in advance if this review is a bit lacklustre as I am sick as a dog but still have to get this review out while it’s still fresh.
Based on the enormously popular graphic novel created by Robert Venditti and Brett Weldele, Surrogates also stars Radha Mitchell (Silent Hill), Ving Rhames (Mission Impossible), James Cromwell (Spider-man 3) and Rosamund Pike (An Education).

Chicago – We have grown accustomed to experiencing the world through technology. One of the great gifts cinema grants us is the ability to experience the world vicariously through the lives of others. The reason why mainstream movie stars are unnaturally beautiful and glamorous is because they represent how we’d like to envision ourselves.
Jonathan Mostow’s “Surrogates” takes this concept a step further, imagining a world where humans live vicariously through mechanical bodies that possess superhuman looks and abilities. In essence, people can “become” movie stars without ever having to leave the comfort of their house, allowing their “perfected” self to experience the world without fear of pain or disease. This ingenious premise could not be more relevant in today’s society, where addictions to social networking sites often lead to the deterioration of “face-to-face” relationships.
Blu-Ray Rating: 3.0/5.0
And yet, the film itself has a curious lack of urgency.

You have to admire Robert Venditti. He was working for Top Shelf, had an inspiration for a story examining how society could be changed if everyone used an avatar, a surrogate if you will, rather than interact with one another. Management loved the idea, bought the story and in 2005, The Surrogates arrived.
You have to therefore be disappointed by the Jonathan Mostow-directed film version of the graphic novel, Surrogates, which fails to examine any of the fascinating ideas in detail, favoring a tired plot. The movie came and went fairly quickly in September 2009, garnering poor reviews and meager box office. In case you missed it, Touchstone Home Entertainment releases the home video version next week.
Staring Bruce Willis, Radha Mitchell, Rosamund Pike, Ving Rhames, and James Cromwell, one would have hoped for something deeper than what we were given. In a world we’re told has 98% of the population...

Action superstar Bruce Willis (the Die Hard franchise) headlines another spectacular thrill ride in the gripping film Surrogates, coming to Blu-ray® Hi-Def and DVD on January 26, 2010 from Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment. Directed by Jonathan Mostow (Terminator Three: Rise of the Machines, U-571), Surrogates is a heart-pounding futuristic tale of splintered identity, treachery and murder. Both DVD and Blu-ray editions come with an array of bonus features that not only invite viewers to delve deep into the darkly imaginative world of Surrogates, but describe how this futuristic idea is not such a far-off reality.

Bruce Willis’ “Surrogates” may have had a good idea going in, but the result is … middling. To be sure, as with any big-budget sci-fi film, it’s enjoyable enough on a base level, but this isn’t a movie that people will be using to salute Bruce Willis when the “Die Hard” star signs off to visit that Big Hollywood Sky. It’s a vanilla effort, disappointingly so given all the talent (not to mention money) involved. Jonathan Mostow is a good director with a knack for action, but his work here feels restrained and muted. I’m not sure how much of the idea survived from the script by Michael Ferris and John D. Bracato, or from the original source material, a comic book by Robert Venditti and Brett Weldele, but what’s left is average at best, not-even-trying at worst. It is the future, and lifelike robotic surrogates have become commonplace.

"Surrogates" will be available on DVD and Blu-ray Hi-Def in January.
Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment announced it will release the Bruce Willis action movie on January 26. The movie, referred to by Collider.com critic Matt Goldberg as "high-octane action," will come complete with a variety of special features for an enhanced viewing experience.
Based on the graphic novel of the same name by Robert Venditti and Brett Weldele, the movie is set in a futuristic society where robot bodies outnumber those of actual humans. The robots, surrogates, are made in the likeness of people who control them from their home. Without any risk of danger, the surrogates allow users to experience an exciting life without any kind of repercussions. Among the users is FBI agent Tom Greer (Willis), who is called upon to solve a mystery involving the surrogates, which are beginning to malfunction, killing their users. And when...

I love opening weekend for new comics movies. Not because all (most?) of the movies are good, and certainly not because the vast majority of them are even half as good as the books from which they were adapted. No, I love them because for these brief but increasingly frequent moments in the course of a year I have a perfect excuse to evangelize about comics. The opening of the new film Surrogates this past weekend was particularly scrumptious, because in this case the movie is adapted from a truly splendid book that many of my friends -- even the comics-readers among them -- have never read. Written by Robert Venditti and illustrated by Brett Weldele, The Surrogates tells the story of an all-too plausible future in which people have increasingly turned over their daily lives to robotic avatars, living...

Sony’s “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” continued a strong run in its sophomore weekend at the box office with an estimated $24.6 million grossed from 2,951 venues. Film which features the voice talents of Bill Hader, Anna Faris, James Caan, Bruce Campbell, Andy Samberg, Mr. T and Bobb’e J. Thompson showed a mere 18% change in compared to last weekend’s $30.3 million take. Disappointing in second place with just $15 million was Touchstone Pictures’ “Surrogates” frontlined by Bruce Willis and including Radha Mitchell, Rosamund Pike, Boris Kodjoe and Ving Rhames. Science fiction actioner/thriller is helmed by Jonathan Mostow and adapted for the screen by Michael Ferris and John Brancato based on the novel from Top Shelf Comix' Robert Venditti and Brett Weldele. Still, even with Willis in the lead, the film which opened in 2,951 locations averaged just $5,083 per theatre.

The sci-fi–murder mystery hybrid Surrogates takes an intriguing idea — a future where people only interact through robot proxies — and kills it deader than its murderer’s brain-melted victims. This film from Jonathan Mostow (Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines) melds bits of I, Robot, The Matrix, and Minority Report, but it excises all the intelligence and style of its predecessors in the mind-numbing process.
Surrogates begins with a lazy look back at its futuristic world’s history, beginning with the invention of surrogates by Canter (James Cromwell). Fast forward 13 years, and the technology created to help people in wheelchairs has now been adopted by 98% of the world’s population (apparently even the starving live their lives through a surrogate…). People rarely leave their homes, instead sending the surrogates out to work and play. While their real bodies molder in specially equipped easy chairs, they feel every sensation that their surrogates experience,...

Surrogates 2009, USA Directed by Jonathan Mostow Written by Michael Ferris, John D. Brancato, Robert Venditti (graphic novel), Brett Weldele (graphic novel) Starring Bruce Willis, Radha Mitchell, Rosamund Pike, Ving Rhames The idea of creating an imaginary persona as a replacement for reality is nothing new, at least for those of us who try to pick up 16-year-old girls on the Internet. But in the new science fiction film Surrogates, based upon the comic book by writer Robert Venditti and artist Brett Weldele, that concept is taken to its extreme. In the world of Surrogates, most of humanity remotely operates customizable androids instead of leaving the house. Not only are operators able to remain safely cocooned inside, but they can fulfill their fantasies by living life in whatever form they choose, from a buxom blonde to a cyber-punk with enough body-modifications to give those guys with the split dicks at BMEzine [1]hard-ons.

Director Jonathan Mostow's live-action adaptation of the Top Shelf Productions comic book series by Robert Venditti and Brett Weldele may appear on the surface to be another testosterone-fueled action film with Bruce Willis in the lead, but Mostow says that there's far more to the plot than explosions and robots ... but there are those too.
This is not a bubble-gum movie. It's definitely got the stuff you'd expect from a Bruce Willis, sci-fi–action film. But it takes the subject matter seriously. There's nothing frivolous about it. In the near-future world of the movie, people use idealized versions of themselves to interact with others in the form of human-looking androids or "surrogates."
I guess you could call it a robot movie and there have been a thousand of those. But I think this one is different. It just seemed to fit closely with how we live our lives today.

When screenwriters Michael Ferris and John D. Brancato and director Jonathan Mostow last teamed up, they created the popcorn-worthy but questionable entry in the "Terminator" franchise, "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines." It was also Mostow's last big-screen directing job. This time, the trio is back with their latest foray into the robot-filled but not-too-distant near future.
Their latest, "Surrogates," is based on the graphic novel of the same name by Robert Venditti and Brett Weldele. The original novel, "The Surrogates," was printed back in 2005 as an allegory to certain people's internet addictions. These were the days before Facebook was a household name and Twitter still hadn't been brainstormed by its creators. Like the corpulent inhabitants of the world of "Wall-e" or even the recent humans-control-humans "Gamer," "Surrogates" is another film that doesn't hide the idea that people are becoming more comfortable behind the glow of technology.

This is one Terrific Sf film, a motion picture of both action and ideas. And it’s also a surprising one—advance word was “iffy,” the misleading advertising campaign seemed to hijack poster images from Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, there wasn’t much of a publicity effort evident to me. Did Disney know how to market this Touchstone Films release? I’m not sure. I found their ads off-putting. Did they think they had a flop? Maybe. Is it a great movie? Yep, I think so. This year (thus far), I have only liked Up and Star Trek more (dreadful sorry, Coraline and Harry Potter And The Half-blood Prince), but then again I should note that I purposely don’t see everything. Life’s too short to spend any of it in Land Of The Lost.

"Surrogates" hits theaters today, and Jonathan Mostow's adaptation of Robert Venditti and Brett Weldele's graphic novel already received a positive review from our very own Kurt Loder. As longtime readers are well aware, we've been covering this film since it was in its earliest stages, bringing you news about the film's cast, story, potential sequels (both on-screen and in comics form), and many of the differences between the film and its source material.
In an effort to get you up to speed on all things "Surrogates," I've compiled a roundup of "Surrogates" coverage from the Splash Page archives featuring lots of things you should know (and a few things you don't need to know, but are cool anyway).
Just over a year ago, we spoke with Venditti, the writer of "The Surrogates" graphic novel, who explained why Bruce Willis was perfect for the lead role in the film.

Three of the biggest comic book movies in Hollywood right now have prompted chatter on Twitter over the last 24 hours. Top Shelf publishers Chris Staros and Brett Warnock both attended the "Surrogates" premiere last night and snapped a few shots from the red carpet.
"Scott Pilgrim vs. The World" will be at the end of the red carpet soon enough, but first, Edgar Wright will have to finish editing the film. And thanks to Twitter, Bryan Lee O'Malley can gently inquire as the project approaches its finish line.
"The Losers" will be there too, and Andy Diggle posted an update regarding Zoe Saldana's hospitality and the Jock artwork used for an on-set chair. Check out all of that and more below in the Twitter Report for September 25, 2009.

Some science fiction films take us to different worlds or alternate realities, or offer visions of the future. In each of these new worlds, certain new rules apply. Sometimes the rules are pretty simple and can be easily and clearly established, as in Star Trek or District 9. Other times the rules are exceedingly complex and raise a million questions, as in the new Surrogates, which is based on a comic book by Robert Venditti and Brett Weldele. In this future world, humans can strap themselves into a chair, plug themselves into a bunch of sensors and have complete control of an artificial being, including movement, speech and senses. This artificial being can then go out into the world to perform daily tasks, while the real person is safe at home, never risking getting hit by a car or falling down a manhole.

It's been a great year for science fiction. From the fantastic reboot of Star Trek to the thoughtful District 9, can Surrogates rise from the questionable ether of Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines director Jonathan Mostow and Catwoman scribes John Brancato and Michael Ferris? The answer is, without a doubt, a very confident "kinda."
In the not too distance future, most of earth's population will fold laundry, drop off the kids and do the horizontal jiggy through remote-controlled robots called surrogates. Humanoid in its appearance, the technology allows their human operators the safety and relaxation of knowing that they're protected within the confines of their home while their better-looking extensions are taking care of business. Whatever business that is, is practically up to the operator.
Violent crime, class and race issues have been erased from daily lives along with other annoyances such as looking ugly and dealing with blemishes.

Surrogates is the newest addition to the “true” genre of science-fiction, which is something we see less often anymore. More likely we’re led to believe a film is sci=fi when it really turns out to be an action or horror flick marketed as science-fiction. The film is based on the 2005-06 comic book series (now a graphic novel) called The Surrogates, written by Robert Venditti and illustrated by Brett Weldele.
One of the very first things I noticed about Surrogates is that it immediately pulled me into the story, creating the mystery and intrigue often necessary to tell a good sci-fi story of this nature. The film blends a sci-fi story with mystery, action and a bit of film noir (although its certainly not visually a film noir) as the main character is sort of an anti-hero law enforcer working outside the box, bending the rules to solve a crime.

Photo: Touchstone Pictures All I can say is at least it is only 88 minutes long, because Surrogates is a film promising a high tech concept only to offer up a story so dumb the plot holes are evident from the opening moments and get worse and worse as the film goes on. Is there a possibility for this world to ever exist? I'm not sure if you are a pessimist or an optimist if you think it can, but I'm sitting here laughing at the balls it takes to even suggest it could... at least at the level presented here. After an opening montage introducing the audience to a future in which humans no longer walk the Earth and have decided it's best to stay at home in a Lazy Boy plugged into their prettier robotic surrogate, we are witness to a crime in which a...

Surrogates Directed by: Jonathan Mostow Written by: Michael Ferris and John Brancato (screenplay), Robert Venditti and Brett Weldele (graphic novel) Starring: Bruce Willis, Radha Mitchell, James Cromwell, Rosamund Pike, Ving Rhames, Boris Kodjoe It's been a pretty solid year for science-fiction films thus far, with movies like Moon, District 9 and Watchmen all raising the bar for thoughtful futuristic tales on the big screen in one way or another. While this is great news for moviegoers, it's unfortunate for a filmmaker who is trying to put together a big budget action/sci-fi flick later in the year that has any hope of measuring up. Case in point: Surrogates director Jonathan Mostow, who finds himself faced with the unenviable task of following all of the aforementioned films, in addition to a whole summer's worth of massive special effects blockbusters. On the one hand, he has the advantage of Mr. Bruce Willis in the lead role,...

We're intrigued by the premise of this Bruce Willis sci-fi pic, and even more intrigued now that it's shaping up as one of the most polarizing movies of 2009.
"Fans of actual sci-fi literature will probably enjoy this more than fans of slam-bang action. But at less than 90 minutes, it's not long enough to bore the haters too badly."
— Luke Y. Thompson, E! Online
"...a smart, speculative suspenser..."
— Todd McCarthy, Variety
"...a serviceable sci-fi thriller..."
— Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly
"In this kind of industrial entertainment, particularly one that seems to be missing some connective narrative tissue, it's hard to know if the writers, John Brancato and Michael Ferris (working from the graphic novel by Robert Venditti and Brett Weldele), or the director, Jonathan Mostow, can be credited or blamed for what's left on screen."
— Manohla Dargis, New York Times
"Lame science fiction about synthetic people that lacks for logic and drama.

Director Jonathan Mostow is no stranger to robots or science fiction, having directed Terminator 3: Rise Of The MacHines (and discussed it in Starlog #313). Now, he goes back to both with his new film, Surrogates.
“I love science fiction, which is why I responded so strongly to Surrogates,” Mostow says of the script based on Robert Venditti & Brett Weldele’s graphic novels.
“In the future, everyone stays home and your robot goes into the world for you,” he explains. “Bruce Willis never leaves his home. He’s paunchy and bald, while his robot surrogate is fit, blond and wears a great suit. The question the movie presents is: What price do we pay for surrendering to that technology?”

With less than a month to go before Surrogates hits theaters nationwide, director Jonathan Mostow has been working long and hard to get the final cut of the film just right and recently invited ComingSoon.net/Superhero Hype! to take a peek behind the editing process as he fine-tunes his look at the not-too-distant future. You might not suspect, looking at Mostow, whose soft charisma evokes an everyday father type, that he's the man responsible for some major Hollywood blockbusters like U-571 and Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines . Clearly a devotee of the source material, a 2006 comic book series by Robert Venditti and Brett Weldele, Mostow's biggest concern right now seems to be just how much he can pack into his sci-fi universe.
