Ron Howard’s “Thirteen Lives” recounts the 2018 Tham Luang cave rescue operation, where 12 children and their coach were trapped in Thailand’s Tham Luang Nang Non cave for 18 days. While working on the score for the film, Benjamin Wallfisch wanted to give the cave where the boys were trapped its own unique sound and character to bring it to life for the audience.
“It was about embracing the place and tuning in with the spirituality of the culture,” Wallfisch told IndieWire Crafts and Animation Editor Bill Desowitz at the Consider This FYC Brunch. “The way in was actually finding a voice for the cave itself. There was a song from the Chiang Rai region itself and our musicologist did a ton of research for us into finding songs from the region. That was the starting point, finding something that really told the story of the place.

Ron Howard and Hans Zimmer have worked together numerous times, so when it came time for Howard to find a composer for his fact-based rescue drama “Thirteen Lives,” Zimmer had a great recommendation for the filmmaker: composer Benjamin Wallfisch, who counts the Oscar-winning Zimmer as a mentor and collaborator.
“We went through a process which definitely Hans has always done and that I’ve learned from him, which is to create a lot of music away from the picture before we even started,” Wallfisch tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview as part of our “Meet the Experts” composers panel. “So even before Ron started shooting, I wrote a sort of 20-minute suite just based on the script. The story itself, we’re dealing with this extraordinary story of true heroism and cultures coming together to achieve something that should have been impossible.”

Ron Howard was as transfixed as the rest of the world in 2018 when a massive international rescue effort came together to save 12 Thai youth soccer players and their coach who were trapped in a flooded underground cave.
That’s also why Howard and his crew became obsessed with not only telling their story but doing so with a maximum level of truth and honesty about what actually transpired over the course of that long summer month.

The Tham Luang cave rescue, which saw 12 members of a Thai youth soccer team and its 25-year-old coach rescued from a flooded cave after being trapped for 18 days, was destined to become a Hollywood film. The combination of dangerous weather, human ingenuity, and international cooperation was the kind of story that most screenwriters can only dream of coming up with themselves.
Much like the rescue that inspired it, “Thirteen Lives” is a complex work of technical mastery. At IndieWire’s Consider This Brunch, director Ron Howard, editor James D. Wilcox, supervising sound editors Oliver Tarney and Rachael Tate, and composer Benjamin Wallfisch participated in a panel moderated by IndieWire’s Jim Hemphill. They broke down the work that went into the complex shoot, explaining that getting the details of Thai culture right was as important as all the technical specificity of recreating the rescue. Most notably, much of the film is in the Thai language.

“We had to get it right, because it’s their story,” declares sound designer Rachael Tate about portraying the 2018 Thai cave rescue.” For our recent webchat she explains, “The local Thai people spoke a very specific local Thai dialect so we made sure we recorded crowd that lived really near the cave.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
“Thirteen Lives” is about a group of young soccer players and their coach being rescued from flooded caves in Thailand. It is based on the 2018 real life events which made news around the world. The film is helmed by Oscar-winning director Ron Howard (“A Beautiful Mind”). It explored the events from the perspective of the rescuers such as John Volanthen (Colin Farrell) and uses a distinct filmmaking style to immerse the viewer in the narrow underwater caves.

Ron Howard’s “Thirteen Lives” is the latest example of the director’s ability to generate riveting cinema from real-world headlines. Like “Apollo 13” and “Frost/Nixon,” it takes a historical event many audience members will have some awareness of — in this case the dramatic rescue of a Thai soccer team trapped in an underwater cave — and brings it to vivid life, creating nail-biting suspense despite the outcome being common knowledge. The key to the film’s effectiveness is its rigorous attention to detail and meticulous sense of research and journalistic accuracy, qualities evident in every craft on display.

The Oscars unveiled new guidelines this week that are designed to promote diversity and inclusion both in front of and behind the camera.
But the rules are inspiring confusion and controversy as studios and filmmakers try to figure out what the mandates mean for their movies. No worries: that’s where Variety comes in, with an “Oscar Rules for Dummies” that can serve as crib notes for awards hopefuls.
Does this go into effect immediately?
No, it does not. The 2020-2021 rules under the Covid-19 pandemic are unchanged. For the next two years, the requirements set forth by AMPAS are not mandatory. In an effort to collect data and put these practices into effect, studios will need to simply fill out the form and include it with the other filing paperwork when submitting for best picture. This will be for Oscars 2022 and Oscars 2023. The requirements will not go into effect...

1917 follows two British soldiers (George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman) as they race against the clock on a mission during World War I. “1917” and “Ford v Ferrari” split the top sound editing prizes Sunday night at the 67th annual Mpse Golden Reel Awards at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel. “1917” took Dialogue/Adr and “Ford v Ferrari” scored for Effects/Foley. The Elton John musical fantasy, “Rocketman,” earned Musical honors and “Jojo Rabbit” topped Music Underscore.
The other Feature awards went to “Parasite” (Foreign Language), “Toy Story 4” (Animation), and “Echo in the Canyon” (Documentary).
This sets up a competitive sound editing Oscar race between Sam Mendes’ innovative, continuous-shot World War I drama and James Mangold’s thrilling race car biopic. “The absence of visible edits meant it would have been easy to be overwhelmed with sound at times, never being able to cut to a different location to reset,” said Oliver Tarney, supervising sound editor of “1917.” “We worked hard at making sure there were always multiple layers of detail in the work we were doing.
