Interview and feature by Mark Jurinko.
I recently had the opportunity to interview Los Angeles-based practical FX and make-up artist Shaun Smith and Chinese production designer Daniel Fu Dong about the upcoming Hong Kong action/fantasy film The Monkey King 2, which is directed by Soi Cheang. The movie is filled with a plethora of elaborate makeup designs, and Famous Monsters wanted to speak with a few of the gentlemen responsible for bringing these characters to life.
Famous Monsters. Daniel, can you tell us about how you came to start working on this project?
Daniel Fu Dong. I also worked on The Monkey King 1 as production designer. Soi, the director, and myself have a mutual vision for the continuity of the project. We are also both willing to create another vision that is way more grounded compared to Mk 1. As you know, in Mk 1, there are a lot of flying immortals...

Though their quality might have been variable, the original films really were for many one of the standouts of 1990s Hong Kong genre cinema, the first instalment back in 1996 having been directed by Andrew Lau (“Infernal Affairs”) and having helped skyrocket the career of Ekin Cheng, along with co-stars Jordan Chan, Francis Ng, Gigi Lai and Simon Yam. And so, it shouldn’t be too much of a surprise that more than 15 years and some 10 (at last count) sequels and spin-offs later, a reboot now arrives, directed by Daniel Chan, who recently also dabbled with gang action in “Triad”, attempting to revisit the formula for a new generation. Taking on the all-important lead role is Him Law (“Hong Kong...
