Nikki Lane speaks as fast as she moves. The gregarious singer-songwriter is dashing around Nashville’s ornate Hotel Indigo, shaking hands and arranging stock. She’s here to put the finishing touches to her latest project – an intimate outpost of her High Class Hillbilly vintage boutique in the hotel’s lobby – and everything needs to be just perfect. “I’m an artist but I’m also an entrepreneur, big time,” Lane states, in her warm Southern twang. Finally, in her star-printed denim and with a grin as wide as the nearby Cumberland River, she sits down for a breather.
A country music mainstay for the last decade, Lane has just released her first album in five years, Denim & Diamonds. With Josh Homme of Queens of The Stone Age on production duties, her classic melodies are backed by strutting guitars and an indelible swagger.

Josh Homme skates gracefully through a surreal fever dream in the new video for Desert Sessions’ “Easier Said Than Done.”
Directed by Chapman Baehler, the clip wastes no time in grabbing your attention as a Hitler look-alike enjoys a picnic with a demon of some sort. Their good time, however, is promptly interrupted when Homme — strapped in a straight jacket and on roller skates — appears and urinates on the fascist dictator.

Josh Homme and his Desert Sessions crew unveiled an action-packed animated video for “Crucifire,” a quick-ripper off volumes 11 and 12 of The Desert Sessions, Arrivederci Despair and Tightwads & Nitwits & Critics & Heels, out Friday, October 25th, via Matador.
“Crucifire” clocks in at just under two minutes, but boasts driving guitars, rumbling drums and a deceptively tender vocal performance by Royal Blood’s Mike Kerr. Jack White took my phone and locked it in a bag. To be fair, it was actually Yondr, a company that specializes in phone-free experiences, like White’s homecoming concert on Tuesday night at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena. But the no-technology, no-distractions edict was clearly the famously analog musician’s idea. And a good one, it turns out.
Over four-and-a-half hours, three distinct acts soundtracked a dark arena that, without the glow of mobile devices, was nearly impossible to date. White’s set, guitar-heavy, up-tempo and anthemic, could have been...

During his time in the White Stripes and with his many solo bands since, one thing has always stayed the same about Jack White‘s live show: no set lists. “I want the show to be alive,” he says. “And I want each show to be different so that the crowd is in control of what’s really happening onstage, whether they know it or not.” This approach has created magic – like a recent 27-song Brooklyn show where he revived deep cuts like the Raconteurs ballad “Carolina Drama” – and disappointment...

Frank
Written by Jon Ronson and Peter Straughan
Directed by Lenny Abrahamson (as Leonard Abrahamson)
UK/Ireland, 2014
Artistic personalities from all walks of life seem to dance to the beat of their own distinctive drums. The creative process and all its motivations and manipulations is what makes these dedicated artists strive for their performing juices. In filmmaker Lenny Abrahamson’s unconventional and infectiously wry musical dramedy Frank we are introduced to a portrait of an eccentric lead singer and his dysfunctional experimental pop band as they go through the odd-like motions of creativity. Not since Alan Parker’s 1991 The Commitments has there been a fictional big screen band so humorously sordid in song and misguided soul.
Frank could have been easily dismissed as a contrived and gimmicky inside joke about the artistry behind the anatomy of an off-kilter musical act. However, Abrahamson shrewdly presents his wacky musicians as interesting specimens...

Few films explore the creative process as insightfully -- and bizarrely -- as Frank.
A strange, genre-defying mix of dark and slapstick comedy, Frank follows Jon (Domhnall Gleeson), a struggling British musician whose life is forever changed when he joins an avant-garde pop band with an unpronounceable name, the Soronprfbs.
As the band spends months recording a new album in a remote cabin in Ireland, Jon discovers his bandmates are enormously talented and predictably oddball. Singer and theremin player Clara (Maggie Gyllenhaal) is a snarling terror. Drummer Nana (Carla Azar) says almost nothing (we sense this may be a good thing), and bass player Baraque (François Civil) is a snooty Frenchman who apparently speaks only in insults. But the oddest of the lot is Frank (Michael Fassbender), a charismatic but emotionally disturbed lead singer who, afraid to face the world directly, wears a giant papier-mâché head at all times.

The droll wit and formal daring of Frank start with the casting. Michael Fassbender has been an X-Man, a gladiator (300), a sex addict (Shame) and an Oscar nominee (12 Years a Slave). Also a hottie, whose posters get drooled over on dorm walls. So why cast Fassbender as a cult-music icon in the title role in Frank and then ask the swoony bugger to cover his head in plastic for 99 percent of the movie?
Don't ask. I'll tell. Because the role is the kind of risk the reliably ballsy Fassbender likes to take.

In this weekend’s specialty box-office debuts, IFC Films hopes to replicate the critical and commercial success of Michael Winterbottom’s first amusing little travelogue/talker of a feature, The Trip, with a semi-sequel, The Trip To Italy. The latest Trip will bow in NYC and La this weekend after a successful Australian run earlier this summer (or their winter).

Sundance just ended, and we are already preparing for the next big film festival, South By Southwest. Not too long ago, the festival announced a few of the films premiering this year, but now they’ve announced the main slate. The midnight selections and some inevitable late-breaking additions are still to be announced, but this should be more than enough to get you excited. Along with many World Premieres, and Sundance favorites like Richard Linklater’s Boyhood and Gareth Evans’ The Raid 2, the line up also includes an anniversary screening of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and an extended Q&A screening of The Grand Budapest Hotel with Wes Anderson. SXSW 2014 runs March 7 through 15 in Austin, Texas. Check out the line up after the jump.

After announcing earlier this month that Jon Favreau’s Chef and the Veronica Mars movie will be making their world debuts at SXSW this year, the festival has revealed its full line-up, including further very promising world premieres, alongside appearances from some of the year’s most high-profile films.
The Midnight programme will be announced early next month, along with the Shorts line-up, and the complete Conference slate a little later as well.
Led by Seth Rogen and Zac Efron, Nicholas Stoller’s anticipated R-rated comedy, Neighbors, will be making its world debut at the festival, notably marked out as a ‘work-in-progress’ ahead of its theatrical release in May.
David Gordon Green’s acclaimed Joe will make its Us premiere, having bowed at Venice and then Toronto last year. Early reviews have Nicolas Cage giving one of the finest performances of his career, with Tye Sheridan (Mud) excellent alongside him.

Zack Snyder, as the filmmaker tends to do, has split the Owf audience (and indeed our own writers) firmly down the middle over his latest movie Sucker Punch but one thing that we can all agree on is that it has a kick-ass soundtrack.
We previewed it some weeks back and now I am delighted to say we have three copies of “Sucker Punch: The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack” that’s out now, to give away to our lucky readers, courtesy of Sony Music.
The audio companion to the film director Zack Snyder describes as “Alice In Wonderland with machine guns” has taken over two years to create, and will delight filmgoers and music fans of all generations.
Fascinatingly reworked versions of classic songs illuminate the soundtrack, with the film’s star Emily Browning covering “Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)” (Eurythmics), “Where Is My Mind?” (The Pixies), and...

The Sucker Punch soundtrack. Describing his new project Sucker Punch as Alice In Wonderland with Machine Guns might have been a good way of securing funding, and might attract chuckling late-teen boys to the theatres, but graphic-fancying CGI automaton Zack Snyder might just as equally have suggested Terminator 2 with cartoon owls, or Citizen Kane with the Ed 209, such is the wisdom of melding a beautifully functioning classic with a completely incongruous element. If only he’d come up with Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, then at least he’d have a best-selling book on his hands. Just as well that Snyder’s snappy-cum-brainless one-liner stands empirically for nothing, the similarities of Sucker Punch with Lewis Carroll’s classic limited to a female protagonist entering a sort of fantasy world, and the dissimilarities being giant robots, CGI everything, massive explosions, every female character looking like an auditioning Playboy bunny, and everything...

Sucker Punch
Directed by: Zack Snyder
Cast: Emily Browning, Oscar Isaac, Carla Gugino, Vanessa Hudgens, Jamie Chung, Abbie Cornish, Jena Malone, Scott Glenn
Running Time: 1 hr 50 mins
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: March 25, 2011
Plot: A young woman (Browning) seeks to escape the insane asylum she’s locked up in by exploring violent fantasies, featuring her friends (Hudgens, Chung, Cornish, Malone).
Who’S It For?: While ladies are indeed kicking butt, the empowerment of Sucker Punch is reserved for the fanboys, who get to watch Snyder toy with more action figures (or in this case, scantily clad dolls). The same crowd that ate up the silly 300 will enjoy this very much, whether they’re aware or not of Snyder working overtime to reverse that movie’s homoeroticism.
Expectations: “Slow-mo” Snyder has gotten fairly predictable with his style, which is at least unmatched as of now (no one loves slow motion as...

If you're a fan of director Zack Snyder ("Watchmen," "300"), you know that subtlety isn't exactly his strong suit. Going by the soundtrack to his new action/fantasy/teenage boy fantasy "Sucker Punch," this extends to every aspect of the process.
The film's soundtrack is comprised exclusively of covers of classic songs, including Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit," The Smiths'' "Where Is My Mind" and The Stooges' "Search and Destroy." While no song matches the intensity of the original, Snyder reworked many of the selections to avoid the original sin of copying the source material wholesale.
So we get Eurhythmics' "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" turned into a jazzy noir number sung by "Sucker Punch" star herself Emily Browning. The cold, detached singing of Annie Lennox have transformed into the chanteuse vocals favored by singers like Julee Cruise in all those David Lynch films. Browning also appears on a cover...

Sony Music have announced the release of Sucker Punch: The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack on March 28th, featuring artists including: Alison Mosshart, Carla Azar, Björk, Skunk Anansie and Queen.
The audio companion to the film director Zack Snyder describes as “Alice In Wonderland with machine guns” has taken over two years to create, and saw Snyder (Watchmen, 300), collaborate with Grammy-nominated composer and music director Marius de Vries (Moulin Rouge!) and composer Tyler Bates (Watchmen, 300, Californication) to select the collection of songs featured on the soundtrack, which play an integral role in the film.
Reworked versions of classic songs illuminate the soundtrack, with the film’s star Emily Browning covering “Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)” (Eurythmics), “Where Is My Mind?” (The Pixies), and “Asleep” (The Smiths), and stars Carla Gugino (Watchmen) and Oscar Isaac (Robin Hood) performing a sultry, musical theatre-inspired version of “Love Is The Drug” (Roxy Music). Alison Mosshart (The Dead Weather,...

Zack Snyder has gained a reputation for striking and stylish visuals in films such as 300, Watchmen and Legend of the Guardians - and now he's also hoping to stimulate us on an auditory level.
A host of classic songs have been "wildly reimagined" for the soundtrack album for Snyder's fantasy adventure Sucker Punch, some of them performed by the film's stars.
Sucker Punch: The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack will hit stores on March 28, 2011.
Sony Music's audio companion to the movie Snyder describes as "Alice In Wonderland with machine guns" has taken over two years to create. It includes songs by Eurythmics, The Smiths, Roxy Music and The Beatles; a full track listing is included below.

Releasing March 22nd, a few days before the film is released, the Sucker Punch soundtrack features some interesting songs and covers. I think the press release says it all, actually:
“Zack Snyder (Watchmen, 300), collaborated with Grammy®-nominated composer and music director Marius de Vries (Moulin Rouge!) and composer Tyler Bates (Watchmen, 300, Californication) to select the collection of songs featured on the soundtrack, which play an integral role in the film.
“Working with Marius and re-teaming with Tyler on Sucker Punch’s soundtrack was an extraordinary experience,” said Snyder. “Sucker Punch is a film created with multiple levels of reality, so this same layered construct had to be considered and applied when approaching the music. The selection of songs we chose and the various ways in which they were each re-envisioned had to add depth, dimension and meaning to the sequences they exist within. Marius and Tyler did an amazing job...

Whether or not Sucker Punch turns out to be a watchable movie – and certainly myself and Simon have expressed & debated our doubts about that issue to some length this week – there’s a good chance it will at least have a pleasurable soundtrack.
Just like Zack Snyder’s meticulously hand-chosen track list for Watchmen included an eclectic taste of iconic tracks from all kind of music era’s and genres, Snyder has once again choose a wide selection of recognisable tunes for his latest action fantasy, many of which are covers sung by the cast themselves.
Lead Emily Browning seems to be the busiest as she has renditions of The Eurythmics’ ‘Sweet Dreams’, The Smiths’ ‘Asleep’ and ‘Where Is My Mind?’ by the Pixies, though cast members Carla Gugino and Oscar Isaac also cover Roxy Music’s ‘Love is the Drug’.

Here are some details on the soundtrack for Zack Snyder's Sucker Punch. I am super excited to see this when it arrives in theaters on March 25! Not only does the movie look amazing it is going to sound amazing as well (both sound fx wise and musically).
The disc features music from Queen, Björk, as well as three tracks featuring Emily Browning. The actress lends her voice to a trio of tracks taking on the Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This), The Smiths’ “Asleep” and The Pixies’ “Where Is My Mind?” (with Yoav). Carla Gugino and Oscar Isaac also sing Roxy Music‘s “Love Is the Drug.”
The disc also features a remix of “Army of Me” by Björk and Skunk Anansie, the latter of which also takes on The Stooges’ “Search and Destroy.” Emiliana Torrini delivers her version of Jefferson Airplane‘s “White Rabbit”, Alison Mosshart (Dead...

Developer Artificial Mind and Movement's "Wet" (actually "Wet") may very well be the most cinematically rich video game released this year. It's got tough competition in Headstrong Games' "House of the Dead: Overkill," at least stylistically, but "Wet serves up a more cohesive narrative. The gameplay can be trying at times, especially since it adheres very closely to a specific formula, but it's tight enough that it should please fans of run 'n gun action.
The Basics
In "Wet," you play Rubi: a katana-wielding, dual pistol-toting badass of an anti-heroine. She jumps, she dives, she runs along walls... and she kills legions of bad guys with wild abandon. Think a brunette version of "Kill Bill"'s The Bride, only motivated by money rather than vengeance. In terms of the gameplay, "Wet" is essentially a "Stranglehold" or "Max Payne" styled affair, only with heaping doses of Quentin Tarantino thrown in to keep things moving.
