Weird Al Yankovic is one wild, crazy and fun entertainer. He's best known for his silly parody music but has also dabbled in film and TV over the course of his career. Now, he's going to play in the world of virtual reality.
Variety reports that Weird Al is set to star in a new Vr comedic short film called Shady Friend that is being produced exclusively for the Positron Voyager Vr motion chair. It sounds like it's going to be quite a crazy and trippy experience. Here are the details:
The resulting short film will include not only motion, but also scents and haptic elements — which should make for an interesting experience, given the topic. Shady Friend is all about a heartbroken hero who accidentally takes some psychedelic drugs his less-than reputable buddy has brought over to his apartment.

‘Weird Al’ Yankovic is making his virtual reality (Vr) debut in a new comedic short film called “Shady Friend” that is being produced exclusively for the Positron Voyager Vr motion chair and that sounds even trippier than most of Yankovic’s vast catalog of oddball hits.
Case in point: The resulting short film will include not only motion, but also scents and haptic elements — which should make for an interesting experience, given the topic. “Shady Friend” is all about a heartbroken hero who accidentally takes some psychedelic drugs his less-than reputable buddy has brought over to his apartment.
Principal photography for “Shady Friend,” which also stars former SNL writer Nick Kocher, Nick Rutherford (“Brigsby Bear”) and Minka Kelly has concluded, but there’s no word on a release date yet.

After solidly tackling the post-apocalyptic thriller with “Day 5,” Rooster Teeth takes a swing at the science-fiction comedy genre with its second, “Crunch Time,” and hits it out of the park once again.

Starring five lovable weirdos as eccentric science students, “Crunch Time” clips along at a breakneck pace, seamlessly weaving wacky gags and colorful characters into its intriguing plot exposition. From the discomfort of an interrogation room, the characters in “Crunch Time” recount the shenanigans that got them handcuffed to a metal desk answering to two steely-faced detectives. (Brett Morrin and “True Detective’s” Michael Hyatt, no less). The motley crew explains the origins of “the brain-frame,” a “machine that allows you to place yourself inside another person’s mind.”

It takes a certain set of balls to let Chumbawamba lyrics introduce your film (“Tubthumping,” of course), but Balls Out isn’t just Any movie. Andrew Disney’s underdog sports comedy is far from conventional, and while it begins like every other “road to athletic redemption” story, a constant mockery of the sports genre rulebook turns this pee-wee effort into a Jv superstar. It’s not exactly a Tom-Brady-caliber showstopper, but more a Ryan-Howard-like slugger that belts a home run whenever jokes connect. Just expect some mighty whiffs to accompany those gut-busting dingers. Honestly, though, who cares – chicks dig the long ball, and in that respect, Disney earns plenty of fans.
The story of Balls Out follows a rag-tag intramural football team, the Panthers, and their path to redemption after disbanding during their freshman year. Even though they were crowned league champions, a crippling injury puts Grant (Nick Kocher) in a wheelchair,...

"Balls Out" first premiered as "Intramural" at the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival before winning Seattle's "Best Guilty Pleasure" award later that year. Orion Releasing will open the film in theaters and on VOD June 19, 2015. (Watch the festival trailer below.) Directed by Andrew Disney and written by Bradley Jackson, the film centers on fifth-year college seniors who hop into the semi-competitive world of intramural football. It stars Jake Lacy (”Girls”), Nikki Reed (Twilight Franchise), Kate McKinnon (“SNL”), Jay Pharoah (”SNL”), Beck Bennett (”SNL”), and Nick Kocher. Film School Rejects said it's "destined to become something of a cult classic, thanks to both its charming cast and a series of highly quotable lines." With graduation, marriage, and an uncertain future on the horizon, fifth year senior Caleb Fuller (Jake Lacy) decides to do the one thing he vowed to never do again: get the ol’ flag football team back together. Now with the.

Can there be anything funnier than seeing Clint Howard make fun of your “yutes” word choice? Well save of course for the obvious My Cousin Vinny judge, I think not.
But that’s not why I gathered you here today. Bradley Jackson’s brilliantly bored mind is why we’re here.
Intramural is a sports comedy written by Jackson in his sophomore year of college about a boy named Caleb (played by Jake Lacey) who is a fifth year college senior in denial about life after school. In his efforts to relive his college career as freshman intramural football champion, he tries to reunite the team, even after his friend Grant Rosenfalis (Nick Kocher) became paralyzed since the last time they played.
Andrew Disney directs this comedy, which stars Lacey and Kocher in addition to Nikki Reed, Nick Rutherford, Gabriel Luna, Brian McElhaney and SNL members Kate McKinnon, Beck Bennett and Jay Pharoah.

Every subculture, niche market, and fringe topic, no matter how minor and specific, will eventually get its own movie. This is something I firmly believe. Bike messengers have “Premium Rush,” food trucks recently got “Chef,” and then there is dodgeball, ping-pong, paintball, and damn near everything else you can imagine. Personally, I’m waiting for a movie about an over-30 co-ed kickball team, and considering that Andrew Disney’s “Intramural” takes on the no-stakes world of college recreational flag football, we’re not too far off. Despite a ridiculous premise, as well as some shortcomings typically associated with low-budget movies, “Intramural” is a goddamn blast. To compare it to the Ben Stiller/Vince Vaughn joint “Dodgeball” is not any kind of stretch because they’re basically the exact same movie. No joke, there’s even a crotchety coach in a wheelchair. It’s all supposed to poke fun at all the clichés of sports movies,...

Normally I would not pay much attention to a movie about college guys bonding over sports, especially football. We get more than enough football here in Texas if you are not a fan. But Intramural lured me in -- shot in Austin; directed by Andrew Disney, who showed a nice touch with humor in his previous film Searching for Sonny; written by Bradley Jackson (The Man Who Never Cried). In fact, Jackson pretty much convinced Disney to direct Intramural during Hill Country Film Festival 2012 (after meeting him at Austin Film Festival -- this is why filmmakers should go to film fests), so it felt like a can't-miss as the Hcff closing-night film.
It turns out that Intramural is pretty damn funny, even for middle-age women who don't subscribe to the Texas Cult of Football. The plot is fairly standard -- a bunch of fifth-year college seniors (apparently this is a...

Every year at the Tribeca Film Festival, a film will debut that comes seemingly out of nowhere and takes critics and audiences completely by surprise. Last year, it was the genre-blending Israeli thriller Big Bad Wolves. This year, it’s director Andrew Disney’s hilarious sports movies send-up Intramural.
The film tells the tale of the Panthers, an intramural college football team led by heroic captain Caleb (Jake Lacy). When one of their best players becomes paralyzed “from the nutsack down” in a championship game, the team disbands, swearing off intramural football forever. Some years later, Caleb is a fourth year senior in college, studying to be a lawyer, when he is lured back to the sport. After putting a new team together to settle a score against Dick Downs (Beck Bennett) and the borderline insane Titans, Caleb finds solace in accepting that there are some things in life worth fighting for.

Young adults often struggle with conflicting emotions about whether they will be truly content in the professional and personal paths that society has deemed acceptable for them after they finish their education. That relatable internal questioning is humorously narrated in the new sports comedy, ‘Intramural,’ from rising helmer Andrew Disney and first time feature film writer Bradley Jackson. Nikki Reed leads an all-star supporting cast in the movie, which had its world premiere at the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival. The actress’ character, as well as the people she interacts with throughout the story, showcase that overcoming these unexpected hurdles can actually make a person stronger when it comes to choosing [ Read More ]

It's time again to start thinking about the Hill Country Film Festival, which runs from April 30-May 4 in Fredericksburg. I just booked my B&B (although is it really a B&B if there's no breakfast? B&Nb, perhaps?) and am looking forward to the coziest film festival I've attended.
Hcff is always fun for me because I don't have to rush from venue to venue, the parties are small and people are very friendly, and the audiences always seem to be excited about the movies. The fest is using two theaters this year, but they're not far apart, although it means some tough decision-making is in order.

Over the weekend at the Apple store in SoHo, Indiewire's Nigel M. Smith spoke with the funny guys behind "Intramural," a sports comedy film playing at the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival. The conversation is part of the "Meet the Filmmaker Series," for this year's Tribeca films. The fifth time is the charm for Caleb Fuller (Jake Lacy) who is finally about to graduate high school. Before he does, though, he tries to reassemble his old football team. Directed by Andrew Disney, "Intramural" also stars Nikki Reed, Kate McKinnon, Beck Bennett and Nick Kocher. Smith got the opportunity to sit down with Disney, along with writer Bradley Jackson and actors Lacy, Kocher, and McElhaney. In the follow clips we see McElhaney explain how he received offset injury. "I broke my toe," McElhaney admitted. "I was playing a drinking game offset." We also see an audience member ask Lacy what it was like...

Andrew Disney, husband, father, and Texan, is bringing his second feature film "Intramural" to Tribeca. "Intramural" is an ensemble comedy about 5th-year college seniors going for one last shot at glory in intramural flag football. "It’s essentially my love letter to the 80s/90s sports movies of my youth" he told Indiewire. "Everything from 'Hoosiers' to 'Cool Runnings,' 'Rocky' to 'Sandlot,' and 'Teen Wolf' to 'Teen Wolf 2.'" Biggest challenge in completing this project? The Texas Sun… We were able to assemble a fantastic cast (Jake Lacy, Kate McKinnon and Beck Bennett, to name a few) but scheduling forced us to film a sports movie during July and August, the hottest months in Texas. Most of the football games were at night, but for the opening game of the film we had to shoot three days in 106 degree heat. I don’t remember much of those days.

There are some deep, hearty, tear-soaked laughs to be found in Intramural, a new comedy from director Andrew Disney, who bottled up his love of movies like Wet Hot American Summer and Hot Rod and then dumped it all over this silly sports spoof about a group of losers who long to win the most meaningless football games. Every square inch of the underdog sports movie is tossed into a joke blender and then distributed to a young, up-and-coming ensemble full of sketch-comedy veterans who feast on deconstructing a genre that's full of cheesy, emotional stories meant to tug at your bro heartstrings. Most of it works, too, mining laughs from decades worth of sports-movie clichés, and while they could've gone even further with the concept (and the comedy), the...

Sports dramas are a dime a dozen: a montage here, an inspirational speech there, and a finale at the Big Game. The genre gets an raucous send-up in "Intramural," and Indiewire has exclusive new stills before its premiere at Tribeca on Saturday night. "Intramural" stars Jake Lacy as Caleb, a fifth year senior who brings together his ragtag group of friends for one more shot at Intramural football before he graduates, gets married, and heads off into the real world. The film also takes on sports movie tropes such as the exposition-spouting announcers, the underdogs vs. their fiercer competitors, and the tough new head coach. The film co-stars "Saturday Night Live" players Kate McKinnon, Beck Bennett and Jay Pharoah, among others, and was directed by Andrew Disney ("Searching for Sonny") from a script by Bradley Jackson. Over the course of cinematic history, sports movies have developed into their own genre, with films such as Hoosiers and Bull Durham standing out from the field. However, there have been few parodies of the genre, with most of the comedy in such films coming from the situation that the characters find themselves in. This is the area that a new comedy, titled Intramural, aims for. Directed by Andrew Disney, working from a screenplay by Bradley Jackson, the film stars Kate McKinnon, Jay Pharoah, Beck Bennett, D.C. Pierson, Nick Kocher, Brian McElhaney, and Nikki Reed, and the first trailer has now been released. The trailer can be seen below.

With the recent end of March Madness, we know sports can be a very serious thing. Luckily, not for everyone.
Intramural is the epic sports film for those who don’t really know or care much about athletics. Jake Lacy (The Office) stars as Caleb, a fifth-year senior and former college intramural champion who gave up the game after his best friend paralyzed his “little friend” on the game-winning play. Back for redemption, Caleb reunites his team in the hilarious send-up of inspirational sports movies (think training montages, lots of training montages) to face off against their rivals, reigning champs the Titans.

Sometimes, you just need to laugh. Luckily, on this Tuesday morning, the “Intramural” trailer is here to help you out. The sophomore effort of director Andrew Disney (scripted by Bradley Jackson), the film looks to be the sort of goofy sports bromance that so rarely gets made these days. Jake Lacy, who features alongside Jenny Slate in the upcoming “Obvious Child,” here takes a starring turn as a guy on the verge of true adulthood, looking for one last chance to be a big, dumb college kid. Here's the latest Austin and Texas film news.
The historic Dobie Theatre, located in the Dobie Center mall off the University of Texas campus, is scheduled to reopen after renovations as a first-run movie house by the end of this year, Austin Business Journal reports. The four-screen theater closed in 2010 and was the original home for Austin Film Society screenings.A production company behind last year's Austin-shot, action-comedy Machete Kills filed a request with Travis County District Judge Scott Jenkins for an injunction against the current rules regarding applications for the Texas Moving Image Industry Incentive Program, according to The Austin Chronicle. Machete Productions argues that the movie met all reasonable criteria for the fund, and that it should be eligible for a reimbursement from the state for the $10 million in qualified spending. The company's attorney says its application was denied because of "inappropriate content." A hearing date has not yet been set.

Machete Productions argues that the movie met all reasonable criteria for the fund, and that it should be eligible for a reimbursement from the state for the $10 million in qualified spending. The company's attorney says its application was denied because of "inappropriate content." A hearing date has not yet been set.

The New York Knicks are one of basketball’s most storied franchises but they haven’t won an NBA title since 1973. Celebrity fans like Spike Lee, Woody Allen, and screenwriter William Goldman worshipped the star-studded — but team-first — Knicks teams of that championship era, and a generation of aging sportswriters refuse to let those hardwood legends die. Actor Michael Rapaport was only three years old when the Knicks won their last title, but he’s turned his yearning for those glory years into a documentary, When the Garden was Eden.

Welcome to Holiday Favorites, a series in which Slackerwood contributors and our friends talk about the movies we watch during the holiday season, holiday-related or otherwise.
This installment comes from Andrew Disney, writer/director of Searching for Sonny, the Fort Worth-shot detective-movie spoof that screened at Austin Film Festival in 2011 (Mike's review). Here's his pick:
I started writing with the intention to impress everyone. First I thought Gremlins, but it was already taken. Then I thought Kiss Kiss Bang Bang because I do love films set during Christmas that have little to do with the holiday. But deep down inside I knew it would all be false. There's one Christmas movie I've watched every Christmas Eve since I was nine. Of course, I'm talking about the 1994 hit movie starring Tim Allen ... The Santa Clause (with special emphasis on the "e").
I distinctly remember sitting in the theater listening to my...

Been to your high school reunion lately? I haven't. I was there for my fifth but, for the tenth and the fifteenth, I politely declined. It wasn't that I intensely disliked anyone from that period of my life (anymore…) or was worried about my status. I just decided that I didn't have any unfinished business, and if I did, well, I just hate the parking situation in that area, okay?

In his first feature film, writer/director Andrew Disney craftily churned out Searching for Sonny, which features Jason Dohring (Veronica Mars) as Elliot, a freshly minted 28 year-old who is depressed and down on his luck, after having another lackluster birthday party, he goes through what some may term, a mini existential crisis. A post card from his old high-school best friend who Sonny Bosco, played by Masi Oka (Heroes) has him leave town for his ten-year high school reunion, while there, he sees and reconsiders his past muse, Eden, played by Minka Kelly. We also meet actors Brian McElhaney and Nick Kocher, perhaps better known from their Internet fame as the comedy duo of BriTANicK, playing the roles of Gary, a more accessible Kip (Napoleon Dynamite), and Calvin, a “self-proclaimed badass”, Elliot’s brother.

Welcome back to This Week In Discs! As always, if you see something you like, click on the image to buy it. Searching for Sonny Elliot reluctantly heads home for his ten-year high school reunion, but instead of the expected disappointments he discovers a missing friend, a murder and a mystery. Writer/director Andrew Disney’s feature debut is an indie rarity in that it’s as funny as any big screen comedy. The laughs come in part due to Disney’s sharp and witty script, but credit should also go to the main cast of Jason Dohring, Nick Kocher and Brian McElhaney. The trio has a smooth and perfectly timed chemistry together, and they help make the film a joy to watch. The lovely Minka Kelly helps in that department as well. Below writer-director Andrew Disney shares one of his favorite scenes from his high-school reunion comedy "Searching for Sonny," starring Jason Dohring (CW's "Ringer) and Minka Kelly ("The Roommate"). A winner at the Phoenix Film Festival where it picked up two awards for Best Screenwriting and Best Ensemble, "Searching for Sonny" follows four united friends who find themselves chief suspects in a murder mystery. The film will be available on DVD/Blu-ray, VOD and in theaters via Tuff on August 28. Everyone remembers high school differently. The other day, my cinematographer, Jeffrey Waldron, and I were recording the commentary for "Searching for Sonny," and I made some comment about how much I loved my high school. Without hesitation, Jeff let out a groan and snapped back, "God, I hated high school." For some, high school is a fleeting memory of a magical time that can never be fully re-lived. ...

The Texas-produced feature film Searching For Sonny is on tour around Texas this month as part of the Texas Independent Film Network's Fall 2012 program. It returns to Austin after having its world premiere at Austin Film Festival 2011. After winning 13 major awards on the festival circuit -- including the Best of Fest at the Hill Country Film Festival -- writer/director Andrew Disney (pictured above) will be at the screening when the roadshow lands in Austin next week.
You can buy tickets now to see the Fort Worth-shot movie at the Violet Crown Cinema on Tuesday, August 21 at 7:30 pm. I saw it at Aff and my review describes it as "kinky and subversive, dark and outrageous." Here's my synopsis from that review:

In Searching for Sonny, a group of friends brought together by a high school reunion find themselves suspected of a murder that suspiciously mirrors a play they performed in high school that was written by the supposed victim. From writer/director Andrew Disney, it stars Jason Dohring (Veronica Mars, Ringer), Minka Kelly and Masi Oka. The film hit the Austin Film Festival last year, had a limited theater run as of August 10th and comes to VOD/Blu-ray on August 28th. Fortunately, the trailer hints that it might be a sleeper that deserves a look. All three stars were key reasons to tune into their respective television shows, and the idea seems like it was executed with a kind of tongue in cheek hipness that could work well. At any rate, the trailer has me sold. Check it out for yourself:...
