It takes a caring stranger to change a couple’s lives.
Indie drama D-Love made its world premiere at the Dances with Films Festival in Hollywood, Calif. Last weekend.
Lrm had an opportunity to interview with the cast and crew of D-Love. We caught up with director/actress Elena Beuca, writer/actor Dave Rogers and composer Billy Howerdel of A Perfect Circle.
Here’s the official synopsis for D-Love:
A couple with longstanding marital issues lands at Lax after a getaway in Europe. For a few years now, Stefania has been working a job she detests and Dan hasn’t worked at all. Their palpable strain is only made worse when a vagabond, Ditlev Dharmakaya, asks for a ride to the busiest freeway in Los Angeles. Stefania doesn’t want to have anything to do with the wanderer, but her husband Dan, much to his wife’s horror, offers...

Rock icons Tool remain, to this day, one of the most enigmatic yet brilliantly progressive bands on the planet. Despite having an output level which can best be described as “at a snail’s pace.”
Throughout the band’s twenty-five plus year history, just four full-length albums have been released, all of which hit platinum in multiple countries. Their fans are a virtual army of die-hard supporters who will consume every scrap of new material they can find from the band, though there’s precious little out there. Lead singer Maynard James Keenan seems to always be busy, with “side” projects like A Perfect Circle and Puscifer as well as a vineyard and charitable causes. Yet Tool’s output simply crawls along, most recently delayed by a long-simmering insurance lawsuit.
All that makes being a Tool fan a rather frustrating experience, since the majority of their body of work is absolutely stellar,...

I’m thrilled to introduce the first episode of an ongoing new podcast called GeekTyrant Audio, where we put the focus on the artists behind the music of the TV shows and films that we love.
Charlie Clouser is the composer of Resident Evil: Extinction, the Saw franchise, Wayward Pines, Childhood’s End, and also wrote the opening theme to American Horror Story. Those works follow a long-running music career as a member of Nine Inch Nails, and a collaborator with A Perfect Circle, Puscifer, White Zombie, Rammstein, Type O Negative, Fuel. He has even collaborated with Marilyn Manson and David Bowie.
In this debut episode of GeekTyrant Audio, we discuss how Clouser created the gorgeous, atmospheric, and occasionally creepy, dread-inducing soundscapes for Childhood’s End and Wayward Pines. We discuss how he learned a lot from his years of work alongside Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails, Gone Girl, and...

If you're any bit of a horror or hard rock fan, Charlie Clouser has already been in your rotation. Think, when your heart races a little more to the strains of the macabre theme to "American Horror Story," or if it's altogether stopped during this first season of "Wayward Pines." If Nine Inch Nails' "Downward Spiral"; or Marilyn Manson's solid '90s albums; or Rob Zombie, White Zombie, or select albums from A Perfect Circle, Killing Joke, Helmet or Puscifer have been in your spinlist, then Clouser has likely already left a mark on you. And if you've ever survived a "Saw" series movie, then Clouser's compositions may still be floating through your veins. The writer-musician recently wrapped on scoring aforementioned Fox show starring Matt Dillon. Today, we exclusively premiere two of Clouser's score selections from the show -- "Climb Out" and "Leaking Oil" -- and discuss just...

Netflix unveiled its new trailer for House of Cards during tonight's Oscars, with the tagline "Question everything." Yes, it has that same dark, edgy song by A Perfect Circle (help!). But it also has Claire scheming like an uneasy pro; the Underwood rowing machine making a cameo; and the obligatory tears, applause, walking-down-hallways-in-d.C. shots sneaking their way in. The new season starts February 27.

Regardless of how closely they've followed the far-reaching career of Tool frontman Maynard James Keenan, genre fans are still very likely familiar with his musical output, as tracks from most of his musical projects have made their way into multiple horror, dark fantasy and science fiction films over the past couple of decades. Tracks from the dark-rock supergroup A Perfect Circle, which Keenan co-founded in 1999 with guitarist Billy Howerdel, have found their way into big-budget films like Underworld (“Judith”), Constantine (“Passive”) and Resident Evil: Afterlife (“The Outsider”), and for good reason: their songs possess a haunted, tormented but strangely seductive vibe that lingers in the memory and instills their scenes with an ominously hypnotic quality. While they've undergone personnel changes and a lengthy hiatus due to Keenan and Howerdel's focus on other projects (including Keenan's quirky electro-rock group Puscifer and Howerdel's gothic team Ashes Divide), A Perfect Circle finally began...

The release also includes A Perfect Circle’s first new original, studio recording in a decade with the inclusion of “By And Down,” a song written after the band returned from their self-imposed hiatus for a series of live performances throughout 2010 and 2011. "Billy and I created A Perfect Circle out of a now long-running friendship, and I think the music we have made reflects that personal connection and has given us the ability to further develop and trust our intuition,” explained Keenan. “I feel Three Sixty is an accurate...

Although Lux is the debut full-length studio release from L.A.-based rockers Gemini Syndrome, the band has already made a pretty epic impression – no small thanks to the dynamic presence of frontman Aaron Nordstrom, a classically-trained musician who has played alongside metal icons like Otep and whose vocals here are very similar in tone to those of Maynard James Keenan (Tool, Puscifer, A Perfect Circle), especially in the album's more pensive moments. Gemini's overall sound has also been compared to arena-rock giants Disturbed, and while I can certainly hear that connection, they infuse that similar base of melodic but heavy radio rock with elements from many other genres – including jazz-tinged beats, gritty industrial riffs and symphonic soundscapes. For Lux, the band also employs a wide range of visual and lyrical imagery from legend, myth and history: for example, each of the twelve tracks is designated by a universal symbol,...

These past few months, I've grown weary trying to find albums that engage me from start to finish. In fact, I've yet to find one album in the past few months I can listen to top to bottom. I truly believe that we are back in the land of "singles." Not saying that a Blood on the Tracks, Dark Side of the Moon, Ok Computer, or (What's The Story) Morning Glory? isn't lurking in the shadows, but.... I'm old enough to have bought 45s back in the '60s when I was a young pup; my first was The Beatles' "Rain"/"Paperback Writer." In the land of digital, I'm happy to download one song from some new noteworthy act and let it fall into my enormous random shuffle playlist (over 8,700 songs and counting). And that "single" is not always the band or label's choice; in the age of iTunes, we...

Apparently these Aussies from Perth are much beloved in a music genre that often gets hammered by my fellow rick critics. I just discovered them, and I have to give them high marks for terrific songs, playing, production, et al. "We Are" is their latest single from their latest album, Asymmetry, due later this summer. You never know what you're gonna get when Tool's Maynard James Keenan busts out another record from his amazingly weird side project Puscifer... but that chaotic unpredictability is what I love most about them. If ever there were a band that totally defies classification from one album to the next (we're talking abstract musical genius on the level of The Residents here) and still rocks danceable beats and head-banging riffs while simultaneously not giving a shit, Puscifer would totally be that band. From the minimalist electro grooves of their debut album V is for Vagina (and the half dozen remix albums that followed) to the insane mashup of industrial metal and melancholy folk ballads that is their semi-concept record Conditions of My Parole, Puscifer is in constant creative flux, with a revolving repertoire and crew that includes major names from many musical genres. Before you even start playing their latest effort,...

The Resident Evil series continues whether you want it to or not, and with Retribution on the way, here's a handy recap on what you've missed so far. It looks like a trailer to us, but the official word is "featurette", and who are we to argue with an armed Milla Jovovich? The clip does a reasonable job of turning the series' convoluted continuity into something that seems to make vague sense. Milla's Alice wakes up to find the world has ended in a zombie apocalypse* and that she's one of the few people who are immune. There's some fighting. She gets abducted by the corrupt Umbrella Corporation and experimented on. There's some fighting. She develops superpowers and gets cloned. There's some fighting. Surprised as I am, it’s been more than six months since any news trickled in on the Leonardo DiCaprio-produced, Matt Reeves-directed reboot of The Twilight Zone; our then-current report announced that Anthony Peckham (Sherlock Holmes) would take up rewriting duties. The Sleeping have since had some ups and downs and change in sound. They are currently on indefinite hiatus.
Backtracking several years, three musicians came together with a shared ambition and idea of the music they wanted to make. The filmed works of David Fincher aren't limited to the cinema. In fact, Fincher has made more music videos and commercials than he has movies and today I've decided to highlight a selection of Fincher's music videos from those that will have you nodding your head saying, "Yup, that looks like something Fincher would have directed," and others that will have you saying, "What? Really? The guy that made Zodiac, Seven and Fight Club made that?" I did my best to find a few quotes for some of the videos, a few facts on others and I can also suggest you look for the likes of Djimon Hounsou in Madonna's "Express Yourself" and Paula Abdul's "Straight Up", Christopher Walken in Madonna's "Bad Girl" and you can also find supermodels such as Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington and Cindy Crawford in the video for George Michael's "Freedom!

Director David Fincher is nabbing all sorts of acclaim for his new film "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" –the Daniel Craig-Rooney Mara starrer enjoys an 94 percent "fresh" rating on movie review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.
The "Social Network" Oscar contender has established an awesome filmography in the last 15 years, including box office hits like "Se7en," cult faves like "Fight Club" and award-nominated behemoths like "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button." But for those who don't know, he got his start directing music videos for artists like Madonna, Paula Abdul, the Rolling Stones, Iggy Pop and Aerosmith. Some of the clips he turned out in the late-80s and early-90s, in particular, have become iconic and genre-defining.
Below are, in our estimation, Fincher's five most iconic videos.

As Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 arrives on DVD and Blu-ray, Louisa catches up with some of its cast for a timely chat...
To mark the DVD and Blu-ray release of Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 2, we spoke to Julie Walters, Bonnie Wright, James and Oliver Phelps, Warwick Davis, Natalia Tena and Tom Felton about their memories of filming, whether Draco’s really a Gryffindor at heart, the perils of a birdseed bosom, and Alan Rickman’s singing.
What memories in particular stand out for you all from your first and last days on set?
Bonnie Wright: Mine were actually on the same set, on Platform 9 ¾. What was weird was that I was the nine year old young girl on the platform the first day and then I was playing the mother of the young girl at the end. It was a kind of creepy.

The process of rebelling is often against your own past and, in that spirit during the magic of SXSW, The Other F Word is a compelling documentary I happened to stumble into after being talked out of seeing a different film on the bus ride over to the theater. The documentary chronicles punk rockers turning 40, having families and having to tour to pay the mortgage (to the man!).
Academy Award-nominated and Emmy-winning director Andrea Blaugrund Nevins‘ The Other F Word opens around the country this month and next via Oscilloscope Laboratories. The Film Stage sat down with Nevin, her producer Cristan Reilly and director of photography Geoffrey Franklin and talked about the process of capturing the intimate lives of men who have spent a good part of their lives creating a mythology about themselves.

A lot of memories that I have from my college days can be tied to certain records, and this is one of them. So, it thrilled me when I saw that Amazon has put A Perfect Circle's Thirteenth Step up as one of their $5 MP3 album deals for this month. This is one of my favorite albums of all time. When I'm feeling a little low, or if I want to just chill out for a while, I go to this one [...]...

I can still recall the intense anticipation I felt upon purchasing A Perfect Circle’s second album, 13th Step. I rushed back to my car, shredded the packaging open and shoved the CD into my stereo for my first official taste of the album other than the single “Weak and Powerless.” This is how things used to be, not even very long ago – if you wanted an album, you had to drive to a store, purchase it and then put it in a CD player. Oh how things have changed!

As the name suggests, “V” Is For Vagina—the 2007 debut from Puscifer, a side project of James Maynard Keenan of Tool and A Perfect Circle—is a pretty silly record. But where Vagina goofed, Conditions Of My Parole broods. Puscifer’s sophomore full-length skips the band’s previous, playful spew of pseudo-industrial free-association. In its place, Keenan lapses into a grim-faced songwriting mode that remains marginally absorbing while refusing to crack a grin. The dreary consistency is compounded by the fact that, this time around, Keenan’s rotating cast of collaborators isn’t all that rotating. Unlike Vagina, with ...

It’s been ten years and I still find myself regularly listening to Humanistic, the beautifully crafted debut album from Abandoned Pools. The band is actually singer-songwriter Tommy Walter with rotating musicians filling the gaps in the studio and live settings (think Trent Reznor – Nine Inch Nails). Walter is a former bassist and founding member of The Eels, who were one of the first signees of DreamWorks Records. Walter eventually left the group to focus on his solo efforts, which would eventually turn into Abandoned Pools.
Recruiting some fellow musicians to lend a hand in the studio – including drummer extraordinaire Josh Freese of Nine Inch Nails, A Perfect Circle and Devo fame – Walter concocted 12 infectious electro-pop songs that hold up just as well in today’s modern music scene. Humanistic is a soundtrack for the ups and downs of everyday life – full of dark reflections on society...

So I figured out where the above picture of Lizzy Caplan came from. That lovely bouffant will be seen in Queens Of Country. I got to see this quirky trailer thanks to a good friend via facebook. The big draw for me was seeing Maynard James Keenan. Ya know? Band leader of Tool, A Perfect Circle, wine maker... Here he comes off a lot like Alan Cumming. No, that's not a complaint. The film is about a simple country girl who finds a mystery ipod that could lead her to her soulmate. Ron...

The classic rock sounds of The Eagles and Steely Dan are what I grew up on. Other than the occasional Enya or Kenny G album (help me!), my dad was constantly playing me songs from his youth. I recall him putting on “Be True to Your School” by the Beach Boys and commenting that his parents must’ve loved that. I even argued that Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett’s solo in “Fade to Black” was the greatest of all time … until my father proved me wrong by playing Eric Clapton’s guest guitar-work on the Stephen Stills solo tune “Come Back Home,” which remains my favorite solo to this day.
This had me wondering, in 40 year’s time what music from today will be considered classic rock? Here are five rock acts that I think won’t be leaving the radio anytime soon.

Chicago — Who doesn't like to hit "shuffle" every once in a while? Sure, playlists are cool, but sometimes when your friends come over, it's also fun to spin the dial and see what comes up, maybe impress them with anything from Miles Davis to My Morning Jacket, Britney Spears to Bon Jovi.

So I decided that my first day of Lollapalooza would be random, a musical buffet that went from hippie pop to British rap, indie rock to electro, with a few stops at everything in between. It began with England's Vaccines, who kicked off the first day of the three-day music orgy on one of the main stages with their ear candy coital anthem "Post Break-Up Sex." Fittingly, I took in their set while chatting with "120 Minutes" host Matt Pinfield, who agreed that the 'Cines sound was a perfect throwback to the good...

Talking with Zane Low on BBC Radio 1, The Killers revealed they have begun work on their fourth album. Asked if they had started writing the follow-up to ‘08’s Day & Age, frontman Brandon Flowers responded, “We have about four or five [songs]. We’ve put them up on a board and they’re sounding good. We think they’re strong.”
The Killers’ last album was ambitious and took the group’s core sound to the next level. We look forward to hearing what the guys have up their sleeve, but it got us thinking about all of the other new albums that we hope to hear before our final year on earth (2012, from what I hear). These albums are “supposed” to come out in 2011, but we’re just going to have to wait and see.

Remember that hard-rock band A Perfect Circle? Yeah, that band that made hits like Three Libas and Weak and Powerless. The group recently announced a reunion tour and there was some speculation that the reunion meant a new album. For once, the speculation was correct. Unfortunately, a new album won't be available any time soon. "We're going to have at least one new song on the tour," guitarist Billy Howerdell told Antimusic. "It's very close to being done, and from there, things should come together. Once we're on the road and start hashing out ideas, they could quickly become a song and make it onto the stage. So there's an album in the works, but not for this summer. The idea was to get the juices flowing a bit and get back into A Perfect Circle mode, and go from there. But we do intend to record new material." The...

The Kansas Speedway is located at Village West, Kan., just outside of Kansas City, Kan. Additional artists on slate at Kanrocksas include the Black Keys, A Perfect Circle, Flaming...

Late Monday night (or early Tuesday morning), the folks behind Lollapalooza revealed the lineup for the 2011 edition of the fest, a top-heavy bill featuring headliners like Eminem, Foo Fighters, Coldplay and Muse that makes me feel like this.
Yes, I am having an existential, Tommy-Lee-Jones level crisis about Lolla 2011, which, in case you weren't aware, is also the 20th anniversary of the fest. It's not really because I have a problem with any of the headliners per se, it's just that, well, it would've been nice if any of them actually had ties to Lolla's past. Sure, there's some nods to recent history — Muse played the fest in 2007 — and plenty of synergy in the second-tier of bands (A Perfect Circle played the fest in 2003, Ween played in 2006, My Morning Jacket played in '06 and '07), but overall, it looks like Perry Farrell and Co. have largely ignored the past 20 years...

In anticipation of this year's Lollapalooza announcement, many hoped Perry Farrell was planning something extra special to celebrate the festival's 20th anniversary. Farrell came through with a solid lineup, including Eminem, Foo Fighters, Coldplay, Muse, My Morning Jacket, deadmau5, A Perfect Circle, Cee Lo Green, Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley and Nas and the Cars.
No doubt Eminem will be the big draw this year in Chicago's Grant Park, and the festival founder has high hopes for the Detroit Mc.
"He's always put together great productions for his shows, and this is something that we look for at Lollapalooza — not just to go out there and perform, but to really give a show," Farrell told MTV News.
Also on the bill is Eminem and Dr. Dre collaborator Skylar Grey.

Have you ever wanted something so bad, you just wanted to destroy public property when it didn’t come through? Was that thing ever a Deftones concert? Deftones fans rioted in Thailand last night after the band canceled a concert more than an hour after it was supposed to start. If this was Cleveland in 1998, we could totally understand it, but in 2011? Outraged fans waiting at Bangkok’s Thunderdome arena took their burning need to hear “Teething” out on nearby vendor tents, smashing bottles and throwing chairs as the crowd laughed and cheered. Hmmm, would we be wrong to think this had less to do with disappointment with the Deftones, and more to do with some people’s desire to destroy a beer garden? It’s a fine line.
Probably realizing that they had offended 99% of their remaining fan base, Deftones issued an apology on their website. “Due to local...

I basically never have anything good to say about Tuesdays. They're when you realize that all your big plans for the week ("I'm gonna wake up earlier than I need to! And run! And not hit the snooze button ten times! And pack a healthy lunch every day!") aren't going to work out because everything that seems so simple and sensible in the evening when you're making these grand plans evaporates when the alarm goes off and your snoozy, lazy, take-out loving ass has the choice of hauling itself out of bed or spending another ten minutes warm and cozy under the covers. And you spend another day swearing at yourself as you realize you only have fifteen minutes to make yourself presentable, again, and race through getting ready inevitably forgetting something vital. Like pants. Or maybe that's just me. Here's your Tuesday night television:
