The producers of Blake Lively‘s latest film The Rhythm Section are speaking out after the movie opened to record-breaking lows its debut weekend.
The action-drama directed by Reed Morano (The Handmaid’s Tale) initially received buzz as a female-led James Bond-esque film (the movie was produced by Barbara Broccoli, who’s behind the British spy franchise). Yet, the $50 million production only grossed $2.8 million across 3,049 theaters in its first three days, according to IndieWire.
These box office numbers made history as the lowest opening ever for a movie showing in more than 3,000 theaters.

You could tell that there was something wrong with The Rhythm Section as early as last April when Paramount didn’t include the title in its CinemaCon reel of then-intended big pics like Terminator: Dark Fate and Gemini Man.
After what was buzzed to be a female James Bond pic from 007 Eon producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson, we finally learned why Paramount didn’t bet on this critically panned-audience rejected knock-off of La Femme Nikita. Rhythm Section reps Blake Lively’s lowest wide opening at the domestic box office with $2.8M. It’s an unfortunate setback for the former Gossip Girl alum, who’s proved herself to be bankable on a global basis with A Simple Favor ($97M+) and The Shallows ($119M). Man, she even injured her hand during filming. Note this is a film that she over-delivered on, and critics have been quick to note her sublime performance.

Sony’s “Bad Boys for Life” is keeping the North American box office healthy as it heads for its third weekend crown at domestic multiplexes with about $17.4 million at 3,705 sites, estimates showed Saturday.
But Paramount’s spy thriller “The Rhythm Section,” starring Blake Lively, has tanked in ninth-place with a $2.9 million launch at 3,049 North American locations — well below pre-release expectations in the $4 million to $8 million range. Opening-day audiences have given the film an unimpressive C+ Cinemascore to go with its 29% Rotten Tomatoes mark from critics.

Forgive the inscrutable title: Reed Morano’s “The Rhythm Section” will explain away its awkward name in due time, though it will likely only inspire viewers to wish for something even weirder to try to sum up the filmmaker’s third feature film. , “The Rhythm Section” might as well be called “This Hurts a Lot,” because the Blake Lively-starring adaptation of Mark Burnell’s novel leaves a mark on both its star and audience. “I’m not looking to get healed,” Lively’s Stephanie huffs at someone halfway through the dark drama, about as close to an ethos as her nihilistic anti-heroine has to offer.
That’s not to say she’s not compelling, or that she doesn’t start to evolve as the mystery winds on. It’s less a film about secret spies and global conspiracies than an exploration of the price of guilt and the weight of trauma.

“The Rhythm Section,” the Paramount spy thriller starring Blake Lively and coming from the producers of the James Bond movies, earned $235,000 in its Thursday box office previews from 2,256 locations, a per-screen average of $104.
“The Handmaid’s Tale” director Reed Morano’s action film has an uphill battle as it opens against both the fantasy horror film “Gretel & Hansel” and of course faces weekend competition from the Super Bowl on Sunday. The film is projected to earn between $9-12 million in its opening weekend against a $50 million budget.
During last year’s Super Bowl, the female-fronted action movie “Miss Bala” earned $650,000 in its Thursday previews and went on to an opening of $6.8 million from 2,203 screens.

Before it leaps off the cliff of cliché into the valley of banality, The Rhythm Section gets in a few good licks. Stephanie Patrick, the wannabe assassin played by Blake Lively, is sure as hell not cut out for the job. She scares easy, fumbles with guns, and can’t fight for shit. Charlize Theron’s Atomic Blonde would laugh her off the screen. But don’t mistake this busy-work thriller for a comedy. Notoriously masculine and unwelcoming, the realm of American action cinema as a genre often refuses to give female characters the same agency as their male counterparts. Women’s bodies are typically introduced to absorb brutality and sexual energy rather than exert any kind of physical power or agility. One of the few recent examples to upend these constructs, Steven Soderbergh’s Haywire subverts the gender hierarchy of action kinetics by giving Gina Carano’s formidable operative Mallory Kane space and opportunity to fully express herself violently, a motif critic Kiva Reardon brilliantly explores in her 2013 essay “Haywire’s Body Talk” published at cléo.
I thought of Haywire often while watching Reed Morano’s clunky but fascinating new bruiser The Rhythm Section. It stars Blake Lively as Stephanie Patrick, a traumatized young British woman made weak by addiction who finds purpose in pursuit of revenge. Reed Morano and Blake Lively are a potent combination of filmmaker and star. Pairing them for an emotional mix of action and drama, based on a series of popular thriller novels? Well, that should be a recipe for great success. Well, it’s not quite that simple. Parts of The Rhythm Section, opening this week, are very well done. Morano’s direction and Lively’s performance are spot on (more later). However, with a middling screenplay and some puzzle stylistic choices, this film winds up being very much a mixed bag. The highs are quite good, especially for a January release, while the lows remind you why Paramount decided to put this one out in the month that they did. The movie is a revenge thriller, told through the prism of grief. Stephanie Patrick (Lively) has seen her life fall apart in the years since her entire family was killed in a plane crash.

Blake Lively’s new film The Rhythm Section opens Friday — and the reviews are already in!
The action thriller, which also stars Jude Law and Sterling K. Brown, has been met with mixed reactions, though Lively’s performance is largely being praised.
The Rhythm Section, long delayed due to an injury Lively sustained on set, follows Stephanie Patrick, an ordinary British woman who loses her family in a tragic accident and sets out to avenge her loved ones’ deaths by killing the killers.
In a review for Forbes, Scott Mendelson notes that Lively delivers a “terrific lead performance” in the Reed Morano-directed thriller.

A bereaved woman hunts down the terrorists who killed her family with help from Jude Law’s maverick MI6 tough guy
A serviceable picture from the 007 stable presided over by producers Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, and adapted by author Mark Burnell from his own bestselling novel series about the assassin Stephanie Patrick, whose deadly vocation was forged by vengeful rage at the terrorists who wiped out her family in a plane bombing. Reed Morano directs and Blake Lively plays Patrick herself.
The movie is an interesting mix of Le Carré/Ludlum locations, invoked with jittery, paranoid urgency – with a little bit of Luc Besson’s film Léon (1994), which featured grizzled Jean Reno instructing young Natalie Portman in the hitperson’s trade.

It’s a wonder that Stephanie Patrick makes it to the end of “The Rhythm Section” alive. Normal people tend not to survive the kind of sophisticated revenge mission that snaps Stephanie out of her depression and into action-hero mode in Reed Morano’s dark, broody and unexpectedly human payback thriller, which stars Blake Lively as a more-motivated-than-coordinated Post Traumatic Suffering Dispenser.
Lest you fear any mention of her survival constitutes a spoiler, consider this: The movie was adapted from the first of four pulpy Stephanie Patrick novels written by Mark Burnell, so of course she doesn’t die. But she comes awfully close on several occasions, and her near-incompetence in the face of danger makes her relatable in ways very few cinematic assassins have ever been. Paramount is opening the movie in January, the month where Liam Neeson is typically the one to do this kind of dirty work.

There is a moment halfway through The Rhythm Section that encapsulates the entire film’s strengths and weaknesses. It’s a car chase through the streets of Tangier that is shot entirely from the front seat of the vehicle, as terrified would-be assassin Stephanie Patrick (Blake Lively) flees the all-male enemies pursuing and shooting at her. Director Reed Morano puts you right in the middle of the action in what starts out as a stunning one-take sequence but then simply becomes a camera swinging frenetically back and forth as cars torpedo around your peripheral vision.
Meanwhile, a screaming and vulnerable Stephanie, fresh out of training, reacts realistically and wildly to the chaos around her: this is no suave superspy smoothly navigating through the carnage, but a flesh-and-blood human being. And by the way,...

“This is always a slow weekend since most people are staying home on Sundays to watch football, especially in a year where we have the Chiefs and 49ers, two exciting teams that a lot of people were hoping would play in the championship,” said Exhibitor Relations analyst Jeff Bock. “It also affects Saturday box office as well, since many people are home on that night as well as getting ready for their watch parties.”

“The Rhythm Section,” Reed Morano’s new espionage thriller about a female assassin who sets out to avenge her family’s untimely death, is not a female-led approximation of a “James Bond” film.
Though Barbara Broccoli, the magnate producer whose family has been solely responsible for the franchise, is producing the movie, “The Rhythm Section” is decidedly not a “James Bond” wannabe. The protagonist, played by an eminently versatile Blake Lively, receives her training as an assassin from an exiled MI6 agent living in Scotland, and — in the course of her revenge — disguises herself as a chemical blonde one moment and a German anarchist the next.
“Everyone’s saying, ‘Oh, can a woman be James Bond?’ Why would a woman want to be James Bond!” Broccoli asked, walking the red carpet at a special screening of “The Rhythm Section” in New York City on Monday evening, hoping to dispel the...

What has to be the final trailer for Blake Lively’s revenge thriller The Rhythm Section has hit and, faithful to the book, it looks to be a kaleidoscope of outfit changes and ludicrous wigs. Eimer Ni Mhaoldomhnaigh is on costume design duties for this one.
Not to be all ‘we’ve read the book’ but, well, we have and, to be honest, it’s not that brilliant. However, the story zips along nicely and does features a compelling female lead. Being as Mark Burnell wrote The Rhythm Section in 1999, it’s astonishing that filmmakers have dragged their feet this long in getting a movie made. Perhaps one of the most interesting parts of the book is just how creepily close it comes to predicting the events of 9/11 in New York. The Rhythm Section was originally slated to hit theaters close to a year ago, but production was suspended after Blake Lively sustained a fairly serious injury to her hand, but at long last, the spy-thriller is nearly here. "I'm going to do this my way." Paramount has debuted a second official trailer for The Rhythm Section, an adaptation of the best-selling novel - the first book from the "Stephanie Patrick Thrillers" series by Mark Burnell. The Rhythm Section is described as an international spy thriller about a woman who takes on the identity of an assassin in order to seek out and get revenge on those who orchestrated a plane crash that killed her family. She is trained, then goes out on her own to find them. Blake Lively stars as Stephanie Patrick, along with Jude Law, Max Casella, Daniel Mays, Richard Brake, Raza Jaffrey, Tawfeek Barhom, and Sterling K. Brown. This actually looks pretty damn cool. I've been looking forward to this, and I hope it's as exhilarating as these trailers make it look. And now we know what the title is referencing. Here's the second official...

There’s hopes that “The Rhythm Section” can kick off a franchise if it gets off on the right note.
In the latest trailer for the spy thriller released Tuesday morning, we see Jude Law training Blake Lively for everything that’s in store for her character.
Her mentor, Iain Boyd (Law) also explains the movie’s title in the newest look at Reed Morano’s spy thriller, telling Stephanie Prick (Lively) that you have to get your rhythm section right in order to be able to shoot straight and pull the trigger when you need to.

Next year is going to be a big one for super-powered women, with 9 female-led superhero movies hitting theaters in 2020. And if rough estimates pan out, these films could combine to gross over $4 billion at movie theaters worldwide. Not only that, but if 12 months from now “Birds of Prey,” “Mulan,” “Black Widow, “Wonder Woman 1984,” and “Eternals” are among the year’s 10 highest grossing films, it will be the first time ever that the list will have gender parity among directors. Read on to see which women will be kicking asses in movie theaters throughout 2020.

Blake Lively is reminiscing about the making of her upcoming film The Rhythm Section — including the injury she sustained while filming it!
The 32-year-old actress poked fun at herself in a video she shared on her Instagram Stories on Monday which showed her lying in a hospital bed with her arm in a sling after she was injured in December 2017 while filming the movie.
“Literally 4 weeks after I said, ‘I’d give my right hand to be in this movie!’ (Good thing no one told me to ‘break a leg’),” Lively wrote.

It's safe to say that The Rhythm Section is showing us a side of Blake Lively that we've never seen before. The 32-year-old actress stars in the action-packed thriller as Stephanie Patrick, a woman bent on vengeance after learning that the plane crash that killed her entire family wasn't an accident. Previously living an aimless life on a path of self-destruction, the revelation spurs Stephanie to adopt a new life as an assassin - with some killer disguises - as she seeks revenge against everyone responsible and finds her own brand of redemption. You may recall, we got a glimpse of Stephanie's drug-addled look before, thanks to some snarky commentary from Lively's husband, Ryan Reynolds.

We have an awesome trailer for you to check out for the film The Rhythm Section, based on the novel by Mark Burnell, in which Blake Lively transforms from grief stricken to machine on the warpath in this tale of revenge and redemption.
Lively plays a woman who has lost her family in a plane crash, who then finds out that the crash was no accident, but that there was actually a bomb on board. She is out for blood to make amends, and she has never looked better.
The film is directed by Reed Morano, who made her career as a cinematographer before venturing into the world of directing, and has made her mark on episodes of The Handmaids Tale, as well as the 2018 film, I Think We’re Alone Now. Lively is joined in the cast by Jude Law, Max Casella, and Sterling K. Brown.

The first trailer for Blake Lively’s long-anticipated spy thriller “The Rhythm Section” is here. Lively’s got dark hair, an icy cold stare and is looking to settle things “with violence.”
The movie, based on Mark Burnell’s book, as well as his own screenplay, comes from “The Handmaid’s Tale” director Reed Morano and stars Jude Law and Sterling K. Brown in what could be the start of a franchise led by the long-time producers of the James Bond films, Michael G. Wilson, and Barbara Broccoli.
Lively stars as Stephanie Patrick, an ordinary woman who turns self-destructive and with nothing to lose after her family is killed in a plane crash, one that turns out not to be just an accident. She then turns to a dark, complex world and enlists the help of Law’s character to seek revenge on those responsible and find her own redemption.

Reed Morano has already left her mark on television (“The Handmaid’s Tale”) and independent films (“Meadowland”), but at the start of 2020 the beloved cinematographer-turned-filmmaker will make her major Hollywood studio debut with “The Rhythm Section.” The revenge thriller stars Blake Lively, Jude Law, Max Casella, and Sterling K. Brown and is based on the Mark Burnell novel of the same name. Burnell adapted his book for the big screen, with James Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson backing the project at Paramount.

"I'm going to say this once - even if you succeed, it won't be worth it." Paramount has finally unveiled an official trailer for The Rhythm Section, an adaptation of the best-selling novel - the first book from the "Stephanie Patrick Thrillers" series by Mark Burnell. This film was originally scheduled to open at the end of the summer, but Paramount pushed it all the way back until late January in 2020. The Rhythm Section is about a woman who takes on the identity of an assassin in order to seek out and get revenge on those who orchestrated a plane crash that killed her family. Blake Lively stars as Stephanie Patrick, joined by Jude Law, Max Casella, Daniel Mays, Richard Brake, Raza Jaffrey, Tawfeek Barhom, and Sterling K. Brown. This is a rather exciting first look at the international spy thriller, I love the music choice and the steely cold intensity of it all.

Paramount Pictures has moved the release date of Blake Lively’s “The Rhythm Section” back two months from Nov. 22 to Jan. 31, 2020, the weekend of Super Bowl Liv.
The spy tale, adapted from Mark Burnell’s novels surrounding character Stephanie Patrick, is produced by James Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson through their Eon banner. Reed Morano is directing the pic.
Lively portrays a heroine who adopts the identity of an assassin to get to the bottom of her family’s death in a plane crash. She discovers it may not have been an accident at all. Jude Law, Sterling K. Brown, Daniel Mays and Raza Jaffrey also star.
Lively suffered a hand injury in 2017 while doing a stunt on the Dublin set, resulting in a six-month delay in production. She underwent two hand surgeries before shooting resumed. Sterling K. Brown joined the film as production started again in Spain.

Wondering why there wasn’t a trailer to the Reed Morano-directed spy film Rhythm Section yet? That’s because Paramount is moving the Im Global/Eon femme spy pic from its Feb. 22 release date to Nov. 22, the Friday before Thanksgiving.
We’ve been hearing about the release date change for a while and from what we know the pic has a great action tone that’s prime for the fall, especially during awards season. Word is Lively is fantastic in the movie. Eon’s 007 pics have typically launched in the November month.

In a strategic decision, Paramount Pictures has moved the release date of “The Rhythm Section,” the studio’s action-franchise hopeful starring Blake Lively, from February to Nov. 22.
Insiders familiar with the studio’s thinking said the new date is attractive for several reasons, including the holiday box office boon. The gritty spy tale, adapted from Mark Burnell’s novels surrounding character Stephanie Patrick, is thought by Paramount insiders to be ideal counter-programming to Disney’s “Frozen 2,” which is opening at the same time.
James Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson are mounting the project through their Eon banner. Given their track record in the genre, the film could be a game-changer for Lively, hot off the success of her noir comedy “A Simple Favor.” Reed Morano is directing the pic.

While 2018 was another banner year for both female filmmakers and female-centric stories (as studies continue to show that movies that put women at the center of their stories are box office gold), 2019 seems poised to only exceed steadily rising expectations for women behind the camera.
From much-hyped blockbusters, indies from rising talents, acclaimed filmmakers trying something new on the big screen, and everything in between, 2019 has a woman-directed project for every movie buff.
Keep in mind, this list only includes films that have an announced release date for 2019, and it’s safe to assume that more titles will join these ranks once the festival season kicks in. Here are the 12 of the most anticipated female-directed films that you can add to your calendar right now.

Exclusive: Paramount Pictures, which has been gearing up production under new studio chairman and CEO Jim Gianopulos after being left with pretty much a barren cupboard from the previous regime of the late Brad Grey and Rob Moore, has several projects in development with female directors. They have only one in production, but the town understands this is an inherited situation that new management is now working to turn around.
We’re told one of the mandates from Gianopulos is to hire more female directors onto projects, evidenced by its development slate both at Paramount and in its Paramount Players division. One of those new projects is the high-profile Nightlife, which Neal Moritz is producing with two strong female roles (see below).
