Empire State Bastard, the recently formed extreme-metal group featuring members of Biffy Clyro and veteran drummer Dave Lombardo, have announced their debut album Rivers of Heresy.
The LP unveil follows the release of the trio’s fiery debut single “Harvest” and a freshly inked deal with Roadrunner Records. The group includes Biffy Clyro’s Simon Neil and Mike Vennart, alongside Lombardo and live bassist Naomi Macleod (Bitch Falcon).
As heard on “Harvest,” the band is far removed from Biffy Clyro and makes proper use of Lombardo’s virtuosity to create absurdly brutal music, inevitably reaching heavy metal’s furthest extreme: grindcore.
“I set about making the most fucking poisonous vile music I possibly could,” admitted Vennart in a press release, “just unabridged hatred in musical form.”
Added Neil, “Lyrically, it’s as misanthropic and nihilistic as I’ve ever written.”

Dave Lombardo has shared “Separation from the Sacred,” the second single from his forthcoming debut solo album Rites of Percussion, arriving May 5th.
It’s another impressive instrumental track from the legendary drummer. Here he strips down to a minimal tribal beat, mostly foregoing cymbals for the pitter-patter of the skins and intricate rim work with his sticks.
“Separation from the Sacred” and the rest of Rites of Percussion was recorded entirely with drum percussion sans extraneous instrumentation such as synths or guitars. However, on the two tracks we’ve heard from the LP, Lombardo still manages to carve out some compelling non-drum sounds using a vast arsenal of percussive instruments: a large concert bass drum, a timpani, a grand piano, and a flock of shakers, maracas, Chinese and symphonic gongs, Native American drums, congas, timbales, bongos, batás, wood blocks, djembes, ibos, darbukas, octobans, cajóns, and cymbals.

After teasing a snippet of their debut single “Harvest” last week, Empire State Bastard have now unleashed the full track. The outfit features singer Simon Neil and touring guitarist Mike Vennart of the Scottish band Biffy Clyro, along with legendary thrash-metal drummer Dave Lombardo.
“Harvest” is a wonderfully chaotic track that ranges from extreme grindcore screams to Pixies-inspired spoken-word verses. It’s a helluva debut single, hopefully giving us a taste of what’s to come on a potential full-length album, with the band having inked a deal with Roadrunner Records.
With Biffy Clyro one of the most popular rock bands in the UK, Empire State Bastard have already sold out a run of upcoming shows in Glasgow (March 26th), Manchester (March 27th), and London (March 28th). They’re also set to play France’s massive Hellfest in June. Their touring lineup is rounded out by bassist Naomi Macleod (Bitch...

To mark the release of Balance, Not Symmetry, out now, we’ve been given 3 copies to give away on DVD.
Using a groundbreaking concept, Biffy Clyro frontman Simon Neil worked alongside director Jamie Adams to create Balance, Not Symmetry, a film and album of the same name, using both as inspiration for each other to create two wonderful works of art.
Laura Harrier plays Caitlin, an American student who must return to her studies at the Glasgow School of Art following the death her father. Leaving behind a grieving mother and supported by her fun-loving flatmate Hannah (Bria Vinaite), Caitlin struggles to navigate grief and inspiration.
With an end of year art project failing to come together, budding romance in the air, and a growing resentment towards her best friend, will Caitlin be able to find her voice through her art? The words of Scotland’s best loved rock band,...

Bria Vinaite again proves her star quality in this earnest coming-of-age film co-scripted by Biffy Clyro frontman Simon Neil
There are moments you may have to bite your lip very hard to stifle harrumphs of exasperation watching this drifty on-the-the-fly Glaswegian indie drama about a young woman grieving for her dad and struggling to finish her art-school graduation show. Written by director Jamie Adams in collaboration with Biffy Clyro frontman Simon Neil – whose band provides the soundtrack – the whole thing has the tentative, incomplete feel of an improv actors’ project.
BlacKkKlansman’s Laura Harrier gives a blank performance as Caitlin, an American-Scot who grew up in New York but is studying art in Glasgow. The film begins with her dad’s funeral, after which Caitlin hastily heads back to college where she shares a flat with her fun-loving best friend Hannah (luminous Bria Vinaite from The Florida Project). Corin Hardy has signed on to direct the remake of The Crow.
The Hallow director has replaced F Javier Gutiérrez on the comic book film, reports Deadline.
Gutiérrez exited the project due to his commitment to the newest film in horror series The Ring.
Filmmaker Edgar Wright recommended Hardy to producer Edward R Pressman, who worked on the original 1994 and has returned for the reboot.
Hardy is best known for directing the animated short Butterfly, as well as music videos for acts including Ed Sheeran, Biffy Clyro, Keane, Paolo Nutini and The Prodigy.
James O'Barr's graphic novel was famously adapted into a film in 1994. Alex Proyas directed the movie, in which star Brandon Lee was accidentally shot and killed on set.
It centres around a murdered man who comes back to life for revenge.
Luke Evans will star in The Crow, which is scheduled to shoot in spring 2015.

A new director has been named for The Crow reboot. Corin Hardy is now set to direct the film based off the 1989 graphic novel by James O’Barr. F. Javier Gutiérrez dropped out of the project to focus on directing The Ring 3.
The Crow will be Hardy's second film. His first film, The Hallow, will debut next year. He has managed to gain some attention off of his music video work, directing videos for artists such as Ed Sheeran, Biffy Clyro, Keane, Paolo Nutini and The Prodigy. Hardy also gained acclaim for directing an animated short called Butterfly. Probably the biggest thing to note is that Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Scott Pilgrim vs the World) is the one who recommended Hardy for the Crow job. That’s one big stamp of approval.

The rebooted version of 1994 comic book classic, The Crow, has found a new director. The previously-attached F. Javier Gutiérrez has bowed out, and relative newcomer Corin Hardy will take the reins on the gothic revenge actioner.
Per Deadline, Hardy’s name was suggested to Edward R. Pressman – who produced the original and is tackling the same role for the remake – by none other than Edgar Wright. A self-confessed fanboy, Wright was impressed by Hardy’s first short, Butterfly, and the edgy music videos he crafted for Ed Sheeran, Biffy Clyro, Keane, Paolo Nutini and The Prodigy, and recommended him for the gig. Hardy’s feature debut, The Hallow, traces the story of family who move to the rural confines of countryside and wind up fighting a load of creatures in the woods. It’s yet to be released, but will hopefully land a date for 2015.

Of all the great movies the Oscars have shunned over the years, Drive's snub in 2012 was a tough one to take.
Ryan Gosling stars as the Hollywood stuntman who moonlights as a getaway driver in his most mesmerising performance since he was a Jewish neo-Nazi in 2001's The Believer. Carey Mulligan is the struggling single mum who Gosling falls for, and a between-Breaking Bad seasons Bryan Cranston plays his mechanic partner in crime.
Nicolas Winding Refn's direction is suave and daring; he follows the blood, sweat and tears of The Driver's journey with total badassness and ends up with something in between Taxi Driver and Michael Mann's Thief... And then there's the soundtrack. What a soundtrack.

Quite simply, the soundtrack to Nicolas Winding Refn's "Drive" is one of the best of the past few years. Seamlessly blending Cliff Martinez's distinct, throbbing score with retro-future jams by Kavinsky, College, Chromatics, and Desire, the entire sonic palette helped inform the neon mood of the Ryan Gosling starring film. But what happens when you drape the movie with a bunch of random new music? Well, you're about to find out. BBC Radio 1's Zane Lowe has undertaken the task of rescoring "Drive," with Chvrches, Foals, Sbtrkt, Jon Hopkins, Laura Mvula, the 1975, Baauer, Banks, Bastille, Bring Me The Horizon, Eric Prydz, the Neighbourhood, and Zcc (aka Simon Neil of Biffy Clyro) all tapped to provide new exclusive music. A 30-second trailer—with Lowe talking all over it—does preview a bit of what it will sound like, and, unsurprisingly, results may vary. Refn carefully crafted his film with...

Zane Lowe has revealed that Chase & Status told the most "shocking" story on his upcoming MTV show.
Soundchain will see Lowe speak to a different artist each week, discussing their careers and backgrounds, alongside special performances.
The BBC Radio 1 DJ hinted that electronic duo Chase & Status had a difficult but fruitful professional relationship with Plan B, aka Ben Drew.
He said: "I had spoken to Ben about Chase & Status [and he had implied that] 'we have a working relationship that's successful' but he gave off this vibe that it's not without its challenges.
"So I raised it with [Chase & Status] and said, 'I've got the feeling that you guys have this interesting relationship' and they told the most amazing story.
"The extremity of that story is just crazy. It was made out of pure love and admiration but it's a good example of a high intensity disagreeing moment."

Zane Lowe has promised "compelling" interviews with artists on his upcoming MTV series Soundchain.
Ed Sheeran, Nas and Biffy Clyro are among the musicians who will feature on Lowe's new show, which sees him speak to a different act each week about their career and background.
"We keep it really simple, and try not to reinvent anything," he said at a Q&A in London today (June 25). "If you get the right subject matter then it can be a compelling watch. It's about concentrating on their journey."
The BBC Radio 1 DJ said that the show is unique as it provides a historical document about different artists in 2014.
He explained: "What's really cool is that all these artists, a lot of them are really new. It's quite rare to speak to someone like Ed Sheeran and go, 'Let's go back', because he's too busy looking forward.

Most bands have to work for years to get their work recognised, often having several flop singles or even albums before they make it big. Bands like Biffy Clyro, Sonic Youth, The National and the Flaming Lips (to name a few) languished in obscurity for years before becoming household names and bringing alternative music to the mainstream. However, some bands strike gold on their very first single.
From that very first note we know that they’re going to go down as legends of the industry to be remembered for years to come. Whether they are rock, pop, rap or any other genre, there are a few acts who have exploded onto the scene with one killer song that elevated them to superstar status overnight; for example Sex Pistols, Ramones and The Clash were flying the flag for the punk rock movement of the 1970s right out the gate,...

Sonisphere
It feels like a lifetime since Sonisphere Festival opened the floodgates of Knebworth Park to thousands of inebriated black-clad metal and rock fans. Their last UK blowout took place in 2011, instantly gaining worship for its blistering line-up and set of unique selling points. It easily rivalled, if not surpassed all of the competition that year, with headlining sets from thrash metal’s Big Four, Biffy Clyro and Slipknot.
It was – to say the least – legendary.
But in 2012, it was axed due to the weak economy and a spout of bad luck that plagued the fest, forcing it to take a further year out of the picture in 2013. This handed the rock ‘n’ roll baton back over to Download and Leeds and Reading, who have owned the market for two years, producing stellar (yet risk free) line-ups that raked in tonnes of cash.
In 2014, Sonisphere is back, but it’s hasn’t returned quietly.

The winner of this year's X Factor will release their single during the week of what qualifies as the 2013 Christmas No.1.
The ITV show has avoided the festive chart battle for the last two years, but the Official Charts Company has announced that the single will release on Monday, December 16 - following the contest's final the day before - with the No.1 being revealed the following Sunday, December 22.
2011 winners Little Mix and 2012 winner James Arthur both reached the top spot, but their singles were released the week before Christmas.
Matt Cardle's Biffy Clyro cover in 2010 was the last X Factor winner's single released during Christmas No.1 week and it topped the charts.
In 2009, however, Joe McElderry was beaten to No.1 by an anti-Simon Cowell campaign's push for Rage Against The Machine's 1993 single 'Killing In The Name'.

Someone at a party recently asked if I was into rock ‘n’ roll. A simple question one might think, however this one kind of caught me completely off guard. The first thing that jumped into my head was “Yes, of course, duhhh” – but what I actually said was “Errrrr….yeah….I guess”.
Why the confusion? Well, I grew up on a very diverse diet which in the early years included the likes of Michael Jackson, Nirvana, Metallica and Oasis. My teenage years saw my tastes move firmly into Nu-metal territory, with bands such as Korn, Deftones and Limp Bizkit going round and round on the Sony Discman. From there I’ve graduated from obsessing over one specific genre and, like most adults these days, now I listen to whatever sounds good, whether it be dubstep, jazz fusion, punk rock or global soul.
But am I fan of rock ‘n’ roll?...

We at HeyUGuys first saw Jeanie Finlay’s The Great Hip Hop Hoax back in June when it played at the 67th Edinburgh International Film Festival.
The documentary reunited Billy Boyd and Gavin Bain, two Scottish rappers who fooled the music industry (and everyone else they met) into thinking they were Silibil ‘n’ Brains — hip-hoppers from California.
It is now due to be released theatrically on September 6th, ahead of its DVD release later in the month, while Finlay, Boyd and Bain will be attending a screening of the film at Dundee Contemporary Arts, which they will follow with a Q&A.
In the meantime, the film’s stars agreed to answer a few questions of our own…
Whose idea was it to finally bring your story to the big screen?
Gavin: My idea. This is exactly how it happened: when Bill split I stayed in character until 2007 when I finally came clean on stage.

I don’t think these festival twins need much of an introduction – aside from my using their names in the title of this feature already – so here they are, very almost upon us. In fact, so almost upon us that by the time this feature goes up I’ll likely be on my 6 to 7 hour bus journey to Leeds, to meet friends, crash, and then head earlybird to Leeds festival on Wednesday. It’s Tuesday today, I should have written this earlier, but it’s been… it’s been a weekend.
Anyway, to the point, from time to time I occasionally like to introduce you lovely people to new music with my Things You Should Be Listening To features, and even more occasionally I might dedicate one of those to the theme of a festival. So, that’s what you’re getting here, as the title suggests, things you should...

You might think that with T In The Park and Glastonbury out of the way, and the Rolling Stones put back on ice for a while that the festival season is just about over, but you’d be completely wrong. And while the sun has still just about got his hat on, there is plenty of musical goodness still to come in 2013, starting in just a short couple of weeks, thanks to the essential festivals that are still yet to come.
So, if you’re considering taking advantage of the atypically good weather, or you just want to fill your ears with some Biffy Clyro, Elton John, Beyonce or Kings Of Leon, there are ample opportunities for festival veterans and newbies alike to pack their babywipes and wellies and head off to a festival that could be the best experience of the year.

Take out your iPod. Hit shuffle a few times. Chances are, if you’re a fan of rock, pop, electronica or heavy metal music released over the last thirty or forty years, it won’t be long before an album cover designed by Storm Thorgerson comes up. Thorgerson has lent his art to everyone from rock giants Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath to modern acts like Biffy Clyro, the Mars Volta and Pendulum.
Thorgerson’s visually striking and surreal artwork ensured that some of the defining musical acts of the 60s and 70s had equally memorable album covers. He continued working right into the twenty-first century too, ensuring that generations of music fans were attracted by his imagery.
In tribute to Thorgerson, who died on Wednesday 18 April aged 69, we present a list of 20 of our favourite album covers.

The rock and roll story is a lie.
Generally speaking, the message is complex and needless – whether mystical, or bedevilled or simply raucous – and it’s hard to invest in the heavily made up, or hugely styled acts who pretend that theirs isn’t a manipulated image. There’s still a lot of pleasure to be had, in the theatre and the adrenaline-soaked silliness, but it’s no more authentic than plastic pop these days.
But Biffy Clyro are a wild exception to the rule. The Scottish band can now class themselves as veterans, after seven albums and tens of musical identities through the years, and there is no hyperbole involved in saying they are the finest British live band of this decade.
Last night they played the first night of their Opposites tour, fresh from winning a number one slot in the album chart, and...

So the Reading and Leeds line ups have been announced with tickets now officially on sale. If you’re one of those people who keenly follows the festivals and waits for that big announcement come ticket day then you already know the line up and manically bashed your bank details into an online ticket site whilst screaming ‘take all my money.’ Then again you might be one of those who saw it, grumbled about how it isn’t as good as –insert preferred year here– and then went about your business.

The latest video from Houses is equally melancholic as “The Beauty Surrounds”, but is also a nice contrast. In the previous video the audience can watch frontman Dexter Tortoriello build a tent in the desert and long for absent Megan Messina. The video for Kate Boy’s “In Your Eyes” is one of the few performance-driven videos that are done really well. Reminiscent of The Last Shadows Puppet’s video for “Standing Next To Me”, it’s amazing what can be done with just...

One Direction was slammed at the NME Awards on Feb. 27 and he was named Villain of the Year — do you think this is wrong?
One Direction didn’t have a very good night on Feb. 27 in their hometown of London. The British boy band was named Worst Band, and Harry Styles was named Villain of the Year. Do you think that this went too far?
Harry appears to be a good sport, because he tweeted on Feb. 27, “And thank you to @NME for my award tonight. Gotta take the rough with the smooth eh?”
What Are The NME Awards?
The NME Awards were founded by a music magazine called New Musical Express. The first show was held in 1953 and the show is actually pretty legit although the trophies given to the winners of Villain of the Year and Worst Record look like a middle finger.

One Direction have another couple of gongs to add to their ever-expanding collection, although we think their latest trophies might end up being used as doorstops rather than taking pride of place next to the Brit they won last week.
The group 'won' the Worst Band gong at Wednesday night's NME awards, with Harry Styles also bagging himself the Villain of The Year accolade.

It's no surprise the boyband got the the thumbs down from the magazine's indie/rock-loving readers but we're still trying to work out why they voted Harry as the biggest villain, beating off stiff competition from David Cameron.
Maybe they're jealous of his curly locks and success with the ladies? Or it could just be his collection of crap tattoos.
Whatever the reason, Hazza clearly isn't bothered - he'd already said he'd like to win the award.
Bothered. Harry Styles.

This week marked the return of Sylvester Stallone in the action flick "Bullet to the Head." The movie, based on the graphic novel of the same name, overflowed with pointless violence and predictable, "tough guy" moments. Those pitfalls combined with a bland performance from Stallone resulted in some pretty rough reviews for the movie. Critics also felt "Warm Bodies" lacked the emotion necessary to allow viewers to connect to the story, and the cinematic train wreck that is "Movie 43" pulled some of the worst ratings this year.
In music, the Local Natives' "Hummingbird" lost points for a lack of originality. Most critics felt the album was void of lyrical depth or the energy found in the group's previous albums. "Opposites," Biffy Clyro's two disc release, was equal parts weak and engaging. Finally, Adam Green's "Adam Green & Binki Shapiro" received negative marks for being a dull attempt at a duets album.

Biffy Clyro are on course to claim their first number one album in the UK with Opposites, while Bingo Players retain their position atop the singles tally. The Dutch DJs' collaboration with Far East Movement, titled 'Get Up (Rattle)', continues to lead this week's singles chart, while will.i.am and Britney Spears remain at two with 'Scream & Shout'. Taylor Swift's 'I Knew You Were Trouble' is at three, Rihanna's 'Stay' at four and Calvin Harris's 'Drinking From The Bottle' is at five, marking no changes from Sunday's Top 5. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis have moved up to eight with 'Thrift Shop', while Devlin's 'Rewind' is currently this week's highest (more)...

The countdown has begun. Tickets for the 2013 Coachella Music Festival officially go on sale Tuesday, January 29 at 10 a.m. Pst on the Coachella website.
The festival will be broken up into two identical weekends like it was last year. Weekend 1 runs April 12-14 and Weekend 2 is April 19-21. While many took to the internet to complain about this year's lineup, there is no doubt that tickets will go fast on Tuesday. Last year's passes sold out online in less than two hours.
Click Here Or Scroll Down For The 2013 Lineup.
Weekend 1 General Admission passes already sold out in the advance sale, however, those who are still vying for Weekend 1 passes can purchase them Tuesday when tickets go on sale -- but must do so in either a car camping package or a shuttle pass package. General Admission Weekend 2 passes will be available Tuesday starting at 10 a.m. Pst.
