Original deep reporting by The Hollywood Reporter’s Scott Johnson is getting the true-crime docuseries treatment at Apple TV+.
The streaming giant has picked up the three-parter Hollywood Con Queen from director Chris Smith, based in part on Johnson’s book Hollywood Con Queen: The Hunt for an Evil Genius from Harper Collins.
The docuseries, to premiere May 8, promises an in-depth exploration of a mysterious Indonesian man and the masquerade behind his elaborate Con Queen scam. This was no garden-variety swindler. His criminal exploits eventually drew the attention of THR investigative journalist Johnson and private investigator Nicole Kotsianas as they set out to unmask the serial imposter by tearing back the layers of one of Hollywood’s most elaborate schemes.
As part of Johnson’s original reporting, he interviewed unwitting victims of the Con Queen’s daring schemes, which wreaked havoc across the entertainment industry and impacted a who’s who of Hollywood.

When I heard that Rupert Murdoch’s fourth marriage was not going to last long enough to get to the seven-year itch, it brought back vivid and somewhat unsettling memories of his previous marital split from the remarkable Wendi Deng.
Why I would ever have anything to do with Rupert Murdoch’s marital problems is a valid question and one I asked myself at the time.
Murdoch had married Deng, more than 30 years his junior, in June 1999. In June 2013, when the world learned that the marriage had foundered, The Hollywood Reporter had not picked up the news with the speed that our editor at the time deemed sufficient. As she gazed at the editorial staff gathered around a conference table that morning, her displeasure seemed to lower the temperature in the room by at least 15 degrees. “How can we advance this story?” she asked.

Con artists have captivated moviemakers almost as long as the art form has been around. Hollywood classics like “The Sting,” “The Producers,” and “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” had fun with their subjects, and “Catch Me If You Can,” “American Hustle,” and “The Usual Suspects” followed closely in those footsteps. There’s something distinctly American about the self mythologizing required to pull off a high stakes con; the American Dream is practically built on delusions of grandeur.

Time magazine announced the 100 most influential people in the world Thursday, honoring the artists, icons, leaders, pioneers and titans who are “shaping the future.” And included in the very stacked “icon” category, is legendary drag queen and actor RuPaul. From Zhang Yimou to Wayne Wang and Ang Lee, film-makers are playing a key part in reshaping China's relationship with its past
If history could be converted into stock options, China would have plenty to cash in: more than 4,000 years' worth. But the first round of big-budget films since the country's emergence as a 21st-century power have, mostly, taken the narrow view of those four millennia: unfailingly epic and hoarsely patriotic. 2002's Hero set the mould – shockingly, as it was directed by the former dissenter Zhang Yimou. Jet Li's nameless swordsman ultimately decides to abandon the film's central assassination because he realises that the king of Qin's dream to unify the whole of China is more important. It's not hard to detect the Communist party's beatific smile behind that plotline. Super trouper Captain America: The First Avenger takes Us top spot from final Harry Potter film
Fascinating to see Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 plunge 72% in its second session after that thunderous $169.2m North American opening record the week before. By comparison, the second weekend of $48.1m looked positively modest and hints at a rapid wind-down for the film across the pond. I'm guessing all those rabid teenagers and their mums who went to see the movie two or three times were the engine that rewrote the record books. Now they're exhausted it's down to the several million (hah!) stragglers to carry the movie over $300m.
This will happen quickly because the current $274.2m running total is a handy platform and kids are on holiday. Deathly Hallows Part 2 should surpass the "domestic" (myopic Us industry parlance for "North American") record of $317.6m set in 2001 by Sorcerer's Stone.

Every girl knows that men come and go, but friendship is forever — and that’s exactly the lesson Wendi spoke of at the premiere of Snow Flower and the Secret Fan!
The gorgeous wife of News Corp CEO Rupert Murdoch, Wendi Murdoch arrived at the NYC premiere of Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, of which she is a producer, on July 13 with her best girlfriend Florence Sloan who is also a producer on the flick. It was beyond fitting since the movie is all about sisterhood and life-long friendship.
“There are many characteristics that make a good friend,” Wendi told HollywoodLife.com at the premiere hosted by The Cinema Society & Ivanka Trump Jewelry. “One is to be honest, to be loyal, and also to improve yourself and if you have nothing to give … nothing to share and your friend out grows you, should talk about it.”

Exclusive: Snow Flower and the Secret Fan Star Li Bingbing on What She Learned About Her Own Culture
Wendi Murdoch's husband Rupert Murdoch may be in the middle of some risky business, but his wife Wendi is doing great things with her new film Snow Flower and the Secret Fan. As a Chinese woman, she was eager to show audiences some of the things that make China great - from its rich historical culture to the great changes in modern society for women.
The film is a loving showcase of what it is like to be women at very different times in Chinese culture. Women in the 19th Century were subject to foot binding, arranged marriages, and no choice in life and love. There was also lao tang and the notion of Nu Shu writing, which held a very special place in a woman's heart at the time.

Nicole Kidman was decked out in NYC last night to attend a Cinema Society screening of Snow Flower and the Secret Fan at the Tribeca Grand Hotel with her husband Keith Urban. The showing was co-sponsored by Ivanka Trump Jewelry and the designer herself attended with her own spouse Jared Kushner. Pregnant Ivanka and Jared are expecting their first child, a girl, any day now. The impending delivery didn't get in the way of Ivanka's socializing, as she made the rounds to say hello to Kelly Bensimon, Irina Shayk, and Wendi Murdoch. Today is actually Ivanka's due date, and she wrote on Twitter this morning, "Heading to work . . . Instinct tells me that this little girl is not planning on making her debut today. We'll see!" Nicole and Keith, meanwhile, left their children at home when they hit the town. Nicole Kidman and daughters Faith and Sunday are back on the...

Sneak Peek the new poster supporting the upcoming feature "Snow Flower And The Secret Fan", directed by Wayne Wang and produced by Florence Sloan, Wendi Murdoch, and Hugo Shong.
Angela Workman adapted the original screenplay, revised by Ronald Bass and Michael Ray, based on the 2005 novel, "Snow Flower And The Secret Fan"by author Lisa See.
Filmed in China, the cast stars actors Li Bingbing, Jun Ji-hyun and Hugh Jackman,
Setting her book in nineteenth century China, See writes that 'Lily', the narrator, was born in 1823 — "the third year of Emperor Daoguang's reign". The novel begins in 1903, when Lily is 80 years old. During her lifetime, Lily lives through the reigns of the four Chinese emperors, 'Daoguang' (1820–1850), 'Xianfeng' (1850–1861), 'Tongzhi' (1861–1875) and 'Guangxu' (1875–1908).
The film follows Lily's great grandchildren who presumably take a different path than their ancestors.

After his rather cold-blooded mutant role in Wolverine, Hugh Jackman is changing tack and has signed on to play a much more humane role as the lead actor in Wayne Wang's Snow Flower And The Secret Fan.
The film, expected to be released next year, focuses on the Chinese tradition of 'laotongs' or 'old sames' - girls who are paired together as lifelong friends at very early ages. Set in the 19th century, this saga follows the friendship of Lily and Snow Flower and their experiences of famine, political unrest, arranged marriages and footbinding.
The script is based on a 2005 novel by the Chinese-American author Lisa See and also stars Bingbing Li and Jeon Ji-Hyn. It's being produced by Wendi Murdoch, wife of the News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch and Florence Sloan, a Malaysian-Chinese married to MGM chairman Harry Sloan.
