It’s fitting that Ron Howard’s documentary “Jim Henson Idea Man” gets its name from the man himself. During an early bit of voiceover, we hear the “Sesame Street” and “Muppets” creator describe his take on just what it is he does: Idea man. Nothing more, nothing less.
As the film winds on, others are more lofty in their estimations. Henson was a “man with a purpose,” a superhuman, someone for whom terms like “incredibly productive” can’t do justice. He “wanted to do more than was humanly possible,” one of Henson’s adult children tells us. Howard’s film reminds us how true that was during Henson’s lifetime and into his continuing legacy.
Henson was a puppeteer and creator of everything from The Muppets to “Fraggle Rock,” an animator and actor, a TV genius (Henson’s fingerprints are still on every element of “Sesame Street”), and a filmmaker.

The 95th annual Academy Awards was a bit of everything… everywhere… all at once! And though the Oscars’ live broadcast was filled with memorable moments, there were plenty of off-screen highlights and backstage shenanigans that weren’t captured during the annual televised event.
Luckily, Et was on the red carpet and inside the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, to share some of those off-camera moments and show you what you missed.
From the star-studded bathrooms to Rihanna’s “hype up” dance before her live performance, here were some of the best unseen moments from this year’s Oscars:

It has been some time since we saw a film like Top Gun: Maverick. From the lightening strike Jerry Bruckheimer Films logo at the start, to the closing music-backed character end credits cast roll call (ala Predator and Con Air), Top Gun Maverick simply drips with ‘80s and ‘90s charisma. “They don’t make ’em like that anymore” they always say…well, Tom Cruise does! And Tron Legacy’s Joseph Kosinski is only too happy to oblige in feeding our need, our need for a good old fashioned, hand-crafted, blockbuster.
The plot sees Maverick (Cruise) still refusing to move up the ranks, and instead opting to stay in the cockpit, constantly pushing the boundaries of flight and speed. One death defying act however lands him in trouble but instead of a wrap on the knuckles, he finds himself called back to the United States Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor program,...

[Editor’s note: The following story contains spoilers for “Top Gun: Maverick.”]
It’s good to be Joseph Kosinski. To be clear, it’s good to be anyone associated with massive smash hit “Top Gun: Maverick,” but it’s especially sweet to be director Kosinski, whose last feature was Sony’s 2017 hotshot firefighter drama “Only the Brave.” Today, he’s the shepherd of Tom Cruise’s unlikely sequel, which has inspired not only huge box office returns but also incredible critical and fan response.
What could top that? We already know: Sci-fi thriller “Spiderhead” debuts on Netflix on June 17 and Kosinski is now prepping the Apple-backed Formula 1 feature starring Brad Pitt.
As “Top Gun: Maverick” continues breaking box-office records and enjoying excellent reviews, the thoughtful and relatively soft-spoken Kosinski was game to answer all our burning questions, from cut scenes to how key cameos came together, who the “enemy” really is, how the film could have ended, and...

When Tom Cruise landed his first starring role in 1981’s “Taps” opposite George C. Scott, he told the crowd at Cannes on Wednesday that he remembers thinking, “Please, if I could just do this for the rest of my life, I will never take it for granted.”
Over 40 years later, Cruise hasn’t stopped running, on screen or head-first into every public appearance to celebrate how much he loves the movies. And he found a good audience when he was given a career retrospective on Wednesday ahead of the Cannes premiere of “Top Gun: Maverick,” taking the moment to champion the theatrical experience and explain what makes a movie that can only be seen on the big screen.

When “Top Gun: Maverick” finally opens in theaters later this month, fans of the 1986 classic will get to witness the long-awaited returns of Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) and Tom “Iceman” Kazansky (Val Kilmer). But fans won’t see Charlotte “Charlie” Blackwood, the Top Gun instructor played by Kelly McGillis. Maverick and Charlie’s romance (and the chemistry that sizzled between Cruise and McGillis) was one of the backbones of the original “Top Gun,” but McGills wasn’t asked to star in the sequel because her character was never even considered to return. “Top Gun: Maverick” director Joseph Kosinski confirmed the omission to Insider ahead of the sequel’s release.
“Top Gun: Maverick” is set 30 years after the original and finds Maverick forced to train a new generation of hot shot pilots. The new recruits are played by the likes of Miles Teller, Glenn Powell, Monica Barbaro and Jay Ellis.

“Top Gun: Maverick” blasted off at CinemaCon, where Paramount Pictures held the tentpole’s first public screening and generated rave first reactions. Journalists in attendance are hailing the long-awaited “Top Gun” sequel as “the perfect blockbuster” and “terrific in every conceivable way.” The film will screen at the Cannes Film Festival in May before Paramount releases it in theaters over Memorial Day weekend.
Paramount Pictures president Brian Robbins introduced the CinemaCon screening of the film and said star Tom Cruise has earned his reputation as the most daring actor in Hollywood. Cruise was not in attendance but did send along a pre-recorded video in which he told the audience, “Please enjoy, and, hey, let’s try to have a great summer!” Several moments in the film had the audience cheering, and Paramount executives were thrilled with the way theater owners were responding to the movie.

“Top Gun: Maverick” director Joseph Kosinski told Empire magazine that he shot approximately 800 hours of footage for the long-in-the-works Tom Cruise action sequel. The filmmaker put that number into perspective by saying the sequel “shot as much footage as the three ‘Lord of the Rings’ movies combined.” Kosinski reunited with his “Oblivion” star Cruise for “Top Gun: Maverick,” which takes place over 30 years after Tony Scott’s 1986 classic.
“Out of a 12 or 14-hour day, you might get 30 seconds of good footage,” Kosinski said about why so much footage was shot. “But it was so hard-earned. It just took a very long time to get it all. Months and months of aerial shooting. We shot as much footage as the three ‘Lord of the Rings’ movies combined. I think it was 800 hours of footage.”

Tom Cruise is set to be celebrated at the Cannes Film Festival this May with a career retrospective, an in-person conversation on stage and the premiere of his eagerly awaited “Top Gun” sequel “Maverick: Top Gun.”
The actor will be in attendance at the Palais des Festivals on May 18 for a tribute event that will take in his 40-year film career. He will also take part in a conversation with journalist and Cannes associate Didier Allouch.
As Variety reported earlier this week, “Top Gun: Maverick” will receive a special screening in Cannes — a huge coup for festival director Thierry Fremaux who has been keen to program the studio tentpole since 2020. Fremaux first aimed to get the movie secured for an out-of-competition slot before Covid-19 delays upended the film release calendar. It will now screen in Cannes just ahead of its May 25 premiere in France, and May 27 release in the U.

More than three decades after the Jim Henson and David Bowie cult classic first hit theaters, Hollywood is ready to head back to the fantastical Labyrinth universe once more.
Of course, there’ve been whispers of a sequel to the 1986 classic for years now, with the intention apparently being to revisit, not reboot, the beloved property. And while it remains to be seen if that’s still the route they’ll head in, we now know that the project is officially moving forward with a new director and writer having signed on this week.
According to Deadline, Doctor Strange and Sinister helmer Scott Derrickson will be stepping behind the camera, while Maggie Levin, who penned Into the Dark, will be on scripting duties. No word on any cast members or plot details just yet, but obviously, this is a pretty exciting step forward for the project and the first serious...

In the title sequence of the new TNT series “Snowpiercer” there’s a montage of train blueprints. Though the show stars Oscar winner Jennifer Connolly and Tony Award winner Daveed Diggs along with an A-list ensemble cast, it’s clear that the more than 1,000-car locomotive — Snowpiercer itself — is the center of attention.
The series is a spinoff of Bong Joon Ho’s 2013 film of the same name that put the South Korean filmmaker on the map. And though the Oscar-winning “Parasite” director acted as executive producer and occasionally consulted, it was showrunner Graeme Manson (“Orphan Black”) who led the project. The sci-fi drama starts seven years after the world has frozen over; only a few thousand survive, continuously circumnavigating the globe aboard the giant caravan.

It’s odd to talk to actor Daveed Diggs about his new series, “Snowpiercer,” in the midst of the global pandemic. The series, an adaptation of Bong Joon Ho’s 2013 film of the same name, sees a group of people separated by class living on a globe-spanning train as the outside world endures below-freezing temperatures. Distinguishing the series from the feature is a murder mystery that compels hospitality overseer Melanie Cavill (Jennifer Connolly) to enlist the help of a tail section member, former homicide detective Andre Layton (Diggs).
A series steeped in economic disparity, isolation, and climate change feels even more timely given our situation, and Diggs is well aware of it.
“It is very hard for me to sit here in my recently purchased house with a pantry full of food on quarantine,” Diggs said. “It’s caused the actor to think how his actions could affect other people...

‘Snowpiercer’ Boss on Adaptation’s Murder Mystery Beginnings, Timely Themes of Trauma and Resistance
It was revealed in Bong Joon Ho’s 2013 feature film “Snowpiercer” that the titular train needed children in order to carry on its mission of lapping the globe in perpetual motion. They were cogs in the machine — literal replacement parts — as the train was already wearing down after only a few years of tearing through the frozen tundra that Earth had become. It was a bleak look at humanity’s chance at survival that was further enhanced by themes of social unrest between the classes that divided the train.

WarnerMedia has reversed course, moving its “Snowpiercer” adaptation back to its original network: TNT.
The drama, which has a two-season order, is still on track to debut next spring. Earlier this year, “Snowpiercer” was moved from TNT, where it had been initially developed, over to TBS.
“We’ve had the unique opportunity to more thoroughly test and explore where this show will best perform. While we are still adding dramas to TBS (such as ‘Obliterated’), after further research and consideration we’ve decided to keep ‘Snowpiercer’ on TNT,” said Kevin Reilly, Chief Content Officer, HBO Max and president, TNT, TBS, and truTV. “Now that we’ve seen this incredible post-apocalyptic sci-fi series in its entirety, and better understand the audience this show will appeal to, we’re confident it will perform strongest on TNT.”

Tom Cruise made a surprise appearance at San Diego Comic-Con to promote Top Gun: Maverick.
If you really think it's a surprise, then you haven't understood the significance of Top Gun on pop culture or Cruise's career.
Cruise showed up at the end of the Terminator: Dark Fate panel noting "to me, Top Gun is about competition."
What we know of Cruise and his dedication to movies certainly bears that out.
Do We Really Need Another Gossip Girl Reboot?
Cruise is known to do much of the stunt work for his films himself, so it will be interesting to discover his accomplishment for Top Gun: Maverick when he makes the inevitable late-night rounds promoting the film.
The trailer itself is full of action, utilizing very few words to make its point.

What do Mary Poppins Returns and Top Gun: Maverick have in common – you know, aside from airborne characters and that palpable sense of nostalgia?
Each sequel arrived long, long after its predecessor – precisely 54 years and 120 days lapsed between the release of Mary Poppins and Disney’s recent sequel. And while Maverick falls just short of that immense time gap (it’s arriving 33 years after the fact), many are still feeling a little anxious about Pete Mitchell’s second coming.
Can Paramount really deliver the goods? Is it possible to capture lightning in a bottle twice? These are the kind of questions that were posed to Jennifer Connolly during a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight and, frankly, she didn’t think twice before reassuring fans that Top Gun: Maverick is everything we hoped for. And more.

“Alita: Battle Angel” has been a passion project for producer James Cameron since 2003, but the box office results aren’t going to be anywhere near the record-breaking heights of “Avatar” or “Titanic.” As reported by The Wrap, box office experts say “Alita” will post a five-day opening of no more than $25 million and is expected to max out at the U.S. box office with $45-50 million. With a production budget between $150 and $200 million (and marketing costs driving that up), “Alita” is on track to be a $200 million flop for studio 20th Century Fox.
Cameron originally planned to direct “Alita” himself but put the project on hold in order to begin work on “Avatar,” a franchise he’s now devoted to continuing with four planned sequels. “Alita” is based on Yukito Kishiro’s cyberpunk manga and stars relative newcomer Rosa Salazar in the title role opposite Mahershala Ali, Christoph Waltz,...

Jay Basu has been tapped to rewrite the screenplay for “Battlestar Galactica,” Universal Pictures’ reimagining of the 1978 television series created by Glen Larson, individuals with knowledge of the project exclusively tell TheWrap. An earlier draft of the script was written by Lisa Joy (“Westworld”).
Francis Lawrence will direct the film. Dylan Clark will produce for his Dylan Clark Productions alongside Michael De Luca through his Michael De Luca Productions. Scott Stuber will executive produce.
Like “Star Wars,” “Battlestar Galactica” was a 1970s space opera that traded on special effects, amazing hair, and a strange world. The show was a response to the success of George Lucas’ film, with its own space battles and spooky, robotic bad guys. Time Magazine listed it as one of the 100 Best TV Shows of All-Time.

Actors don’t sign up to play (or fight) a superhero for awards glory. But when you look at many of their careers, there’s a reason why — they don’t need to, because they already have statues on their mantels.
Over the last 10 years, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has grown from “that movie where Robert Downey Jr. wears a robot suit” to one of the most dominant forces in today’s pop culture, with (currently) 19 total movies of varying quality building a world of gods, heroes, superpowers, magic, aliens, and most importantly good people doing their best against the forces of evil.
Along the way to box office ownership, the McU has attracted a vast swath of acting talent, including some of Hollywood’s finest actors as well as emerging stars who were cast just on the cusp of fame. So many people have been enlisted in these films,...

In this edition of Canon Of Film, we look at the director’s cut of Alex Proyas’ underated gothic noir, ‘Dark City‘. For the story behind the genesis of the Canon, you can click here.
Dark City: Director’S Cut (1998)
Director: Alex Proyas
Screenwriter: Alex Proyas and Lem Dobbs and David S. Goyer
At some point, it went from cool to cliche to say that you were a fan of ‘Dark City‘. I think it’s well-respected and well-known enough now, but at one point in time, even people who thought they really knew sci-fi and all the famous archetypal elements and the films that created them like Fritz Lang’s ‘Metropolis‘ or Kubrick’s, ‘2001: A Space Odyssey‘ or Ridley Scott’s ‘Blade Runner‘, a lot of those fans didn’t catch on to Alex Proyas’s ‘Dark City‘ ’til way later. It was practically ignored by the general...

In this edition of Canon Of Film, we celebrate the recent release of ‘Mother!‘ on home video by delving into Darren Aronofsky‘s masterpiece, ‘Requiem for a Dream‘. For the story behind the genesis of the Canon, you can click here.
Requiem For A Dream (2000)
Director: Darren Aronofsky
Screenplay: Hubert Selby Jr. and Darren Aronofsky based on the book by Hubert Selby Jr.
I saw a stat awhile ago, I don’t remember the exact numbers, but basically it said that most people are incorrect about what will make them happy. Happy. I suspect those are the same people that think happiness is a feeling that they need to achieve, or search for. The more I think about it, I believe more than anything, drug addicts have disillusioned themselves into believing such a feeling of happiness essentially exists. Happiness, pleasure, something along those lines, but whatever it is, the world...

Husbands the Series finished their Kickstarter campaign at $60,000, over their $50,000 goal, with the additional money they can make it all bigger and better. Thanks to all who contributed. We'll be following up with Jane, Sean and Cheeks soon.
Joe Eszterhas has released his tape of Mel Gibson going on a rant against his baby momma and Eszterhas. It's pretty graphic, and not at all good for his already tarnished image.
The Bachelor and The Bachelorette have been hit with a lawsuit for racial discrimination for never having had a bachelor or bachelorette of color. It would be fairly hard to prove bias in casting based on what little I know of the system, but after 25 seasons of this dreck it is fairly indefensible.
Sean Hannity and Bill O'Reilly have reupped with Fox News for multi-year contracts that will keep their colorful versions of facts on the air for a very long time.
