"We all deserve a second chance at a first impression." Lionsgate has unveiled an official trailer for an indie college comedy titled The Re-Education of Molly Singer, made by filmmaker Andy Palmer. His entire filmography isn't impressive, which should be a sign of what to expect with this. To save her job, a young lawyer must go undercover, enrolling as a freshman at her old alma mater, in order to resuscitate the well being of her Boss' terribly awkward teenage son. Molly goes to battle with stuck-up hall monitors, boozed-up frat brothers, and her old archenemy in a hilarious quest through the past to save her future. The comedy stars Jaime Pressly as Brenda, Ty Simpkins as Elliot, Britt Robertson as Molly Singer, Nico Santos, Cierra Ramirez, Jonathan Lipnicki, and Wendie Malick. This sounds like the copy cat junk version of Jennifer Lawrence's No Hard Feelings, similar concept about...

Luke Grimes considers Hugh Grant his North Star when it comes to acting in romantic comedies.
Grimes, known for his role as Kayce Dutton in “Yellowstone,” stars as Jake in Netflix’s romantic comedy “Happiness for Beginners,” adapted from the novel of the same name by Katherine Center. The film, which is currently streaming, marks a shift in genre for the drama actor.
“[Hugh]’s absolutely incredible at the genre, and I could never be as good as him at that. But, you know, that was where I was trying to land the plane,” Grimes told TheWrap in an interview conducted before the SAG-AFTRA strike. “I just think he’s so good at being the straight guy, also being sort of quirky and funny enough in himself to carry it. He also lets the funny people be funny. A lot of my favorite rom-coms have Hugh Grant, and I talked to Vicki [Wight] the director,...

Adapted from the 2015 novel by Katherine Center, Netflix’s “Happiness for Beginners” largely takes place in the wilderness, where different kinds of people are forced to bond while braving the elements as they hike the Appalachian Trail. Led by “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” and “The Office” alum Ellie Kemper, the gaggle of goofballs provides laughs of all kinds as well as some heartfelt moments.
Zealous camp guide Bennett (Ben Cook) keeps everything interesting, especially when he scolds Helen (Kemper) for her careless mistakes on the hike and praises Jake (Luke Grimes) for all of his perfect moves in setting up and taking down camp. Nico Santos and Gus Birney even more humor to this romantic comedy story.
Here’s who plays who in “Happiness for Beginners”:

Ellie Kemper portrays Helen, who wants to start over after she divorces her husband. She experienced infidelity and a miscarriage during their marriage.

Plot: Helen has always lived her life as far from the edge as possible. Finding herself newly divorced and a little lost, Helen decides she needs a reset and signs up for the “Adventure of a Lifetime!” The adventure is a backcountry survival course hiking the Appalachian Trail with a group of oddball strangers. From the beginning, Helen’s plan to be the best hiker is tested and she finds more than just herself in the wilderness.

Vicky Wight’s “Happiness for Beginners” asks a question that it answers with more authority than just about any other film I’ve ever seen: Can something still be considered a Hallmark movie if it was made by Netflix? Legally, not so much. In every other sense, however, there’s no longer even a shred of doubt.
A flat and glossy film about a newly divorced woman who decides to walk the pain away on the Appalachian Trail (a two-week excursion that finds her tripping over tree trunks and falling for a hunky ex-doctor who looks like the human manifestation of a Home Depot), this veritable “Eat, Pray, Hike” leaves no trace of originality or dramatic consequence. The advantages it has over the likes of “We Wish You a Married Christmas” and “Royally Ever After” are twofold: A likable cast, and dignified source material.

It’s always a pleasure talking to Ellie Kemper. From “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” to her current Netflix rom-com “Happiness for Beginners,” the actress has always been warm and sweet. In “Happiness for Beginners,” Kemper is Helen, a recent divorcee who goes on a wilderness survival course. Little does she know, it’s the beginning of her happiness.

The premise of Vicky Wight’s Happiness for Beginners sounds like a promising invitation to indulge in an offbeat romantic comedy. It’s a Netflix offering with Hallmark Channel roots: A 30something woman embarks on a journey through the woods to recover from her divorce. What will she find on her sojourn? A renewed sense of hope? Confidence? Romance?
If we stick to the rules of the genre, our heroine Helen (Ellie Kemper) will have it all. Peace lies in the towering trees of upstate New York, where her wilderness survival course takes place. Hope looks like the bonds she makes with her fellow campers. Love takes the shape of a familiar face who helps her remember a past self. In exchange for our attention, we will be rewarded with a couple worth rooting for and learn some truths about life. We might even consider checking out Katherine Center’s novel,...

Sitcom star Ellie Kemper gets the chance to subvert her usually chipper screen persona in “Happiness for Beginners,” writer-director Vicky Wright’s third feature and — following 2020’s Leslie Bibb starrer “The Lost Husband” — her second adaptation of a Katherine Center novel. Kemper plays dour divorcee Helen, who as the film opens is about to head off on a group hiking vacation, in the hope that it might snap her out of her post-split blues. Unbeknownst to Helen, her brother’s hunky doctor friend Jake (Luke Grimes) has booked himself onto the same trip, for reasons that are crystal-clear to the audience from the moment an exasperated Helen tells him, “God, you’re so annoying!”

This week on TheWrap-Up podcast, TheWrap founder and editor-in-chief Sharon Waxman spoke with Bridget Everett, star of the HBO comedy series “Somebody Somewhere.”
The discussion begins in Manhattan, Kansas, not only the birthplace of Everett but the setting for the HBO series in which she plays Sam, a woman trying to find happiness in the wake of her sister’s death.
“My childhood was a lot different, a lot of the people I grew up with who I’m still friends with were all church, family, faith, football on weekends,” Everett said of how the show’s portrayal of Manhattan life compares to her upbringing. “It was largely sort of a straight, heteronormative vibe back in the ‘70s and ‘80s.”
That said, when she met with creators Hannah Bos and Paul Thureen about working on something together at HBO, they pitched a number of elements that resonated deeply with Everett.
The discussion begins in Manhattan, Kansas, not only the birthplace of Everett but the setting for the HBO series in which she plays Sam, a woman trying to find happiness in the wake of her sister’s death.

Solutions start in the writers’ room. That’s what seven LGBTQ actors from diverse ethnic and gender identities agreed upon during TheWrap’s Pride month roundtable, in which we invited the performers to share their experiences as queer talent in Hollywood.
“What We Do in the Shadows” actor Harvey Guillén recalled times he had to help accurately translate Spanish dialogue because there were no Mexican writers on his production. “Reservation Dogs” writer, actor and director Devery Jacobs, who identifies as indigenous and queer, said she got her “ass into the writers room since I was that annoying actor with so many notes.”
“[There] should never be a situation where you have queer characters and not queer writers, to at least go with those characters,” said “Yellowjackets” star Nicole Maines, who is transgender. “If you’re going to have a trans character, hire a trans writer too because it shouldn’t just...

This post contains spoilers for "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3."
The third and final chapter of James Gunn's "Guardians of the Galaxy" trilogy is a pretty somber movie. Between including a goodbye to several of the Guardians, exploring Rocket's (Bradley Cooper) tragic backstory in sob-inducing detail, and hinging its climax around the ruthless demolition of an entire planet, the movie definitely leans a little more towards deep emotion than levity. It's a gambit that works, but when two great comedic actors were on screen, I couldn't help but wish they had a few more jokes to work with.
The duo in question here is Miriam Shor and Nico Santos, two actors who play The High Evolutionary's (Chukwudi Iwuji) sometimes-scheming sidekicks. With their cyberkinetic enhancements, mad scientist outfits, and desperate need for moisturizer, Vim (Shor) and Theel (Santos) are more scary than funny. Yet the performers under the...

Nico Santos never expected to become visually impaired at a young age.
The “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” star has starred in many beloved films from “Crazy Rich Asians” to NBC’s comedy “Superstore”, but during his time filming the third or fourth season, he was hit by an unexpected medical emergency.
“I’m visually impaired. I’m blind in my right eye. I actually lost my vision. Around the third or fourth season of ‘Superstore’, I had a retinal detachment and complication,” he told People. “So, that’s something I’ve had to navigate.”

“It was definitely an adjustment process. You grieve that loss,” the 44-year-old admitted. “but with something like that, you have to keep moving forward. The other option is just to sit and wallow. And, you know, I’ve certainly done a little bit of that,...

Contains spoilers for "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3"
Funny. Soulful. Cinematic. Brutal. Wait, what? The first two "Guardians of the Galaxy" films can be described in many ways, but few people would use the word "brutal." And yet, as "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" continues to cast its crowd-pleasing spell upon audiences, critics, and box office receipts alike, "brutal" is a perfectly appropriate word to describe the series' third outing.
Throughout this trilogy-capper, filmmakers magnify the stakes by using brutality in multiple senses of the word. Visually, digital artists elevate the action sequences with more gruesome gore than ever before. Emotionally, writer-slash-director James Gunn deepens the story beats with more pronounced pathos than any prior "Guardians of the Galaxy" script.
The characters who now make up the ever-expanding "Guardians of the Galaxy" roster first danced their way into the Marvel Cinematic Universe as virtually unknown heroes in 2014. Nearly...
