Madrid (AP) — A stampede in an arena where thousands of people were attending a Halloween dance party killed three women and critically injured two others early Thursday, officials said. It happened just after 4 a.m. in a passageway within the venue leading to the central concert area at Madrid Arena, where the disco-style party with American DJ Steve Aoki was under way. Someone set off a flare or a firework, causing the stampede that trampled the five young women, Deputy Mayor Miguel Angel Villanueva said. One witness said the stampede left partygoers piled atop one another as...

There are several quick stories coming out of Filmax today, and we've got them all in one neat place. Mainly because we didn't feel like writing a separate story for each. We're allowed to be a little lazy every now and again, too, ya know. Read on!
First up, the studio has announced that director Jordan Barker's Torment and Exorcismus director Manuel Carballo's The Returned are both in the process of casting and will begin shooting this October.
In Torment "Cory Morgan; his wife, Sarah; and their 3-year-old daughter, Emily, decide to spend a quiet family holiday alone. When Sarah starts seeing strange things around the house, it soon becomes clear that they have some unwanted guests… Now the family are forced to fight for their lives in what has become a festival of terror of epic proportions."

Anyone who saw last year’s surgical horror story, The Skin I Live In, knows that director Pedro Almodóvar can pull a first-rate performance out of Antonio Banderas, which makes sense, seeing as they’ve been working together for over 20 years. And anyone who has seen Almodóvar’s starring vehicles for Penélope Cruz, like Volver or Broken Embraces, can give similar compliments to his relationship with that actress. Almodóvar is a filmmaker who knows how to get the best out of the people he’s working with. But what he’s never been able to do is direct Banderas and Cruz together in the same movie. As a matter of fact, even though they’re maybe the two most famous Spanish actors of the last two decades, up until this point nobody has been able to get them both to appear in the same film. That’s all set to change come Almodóvar’s latest project, however...

When Antonio Banderas and Pedro Almodovar unveiled "The Skin I Live In" in 2011, it marked their first collaboration in over twenty years, in a film that was excitingly new territory for both director and actor. We wondered how long it would be before the duo paired up again, and thankfully, the wait will be shorter than two decades.
On the heels of news that Penelope Cruz would also be taking a role in Almodovar's next film "Standby Lovers," ABC and ScreenDaily clarify that it will only be a cameo role. And while that's a slight disappointment, the good news is that she will be joined by Banderas in the scene. Said to be a comedy in the vein of Almodovar's early films, plot details continue to get solidified as the production moves closer to its start date, with the story said to be an apocalyptic comedy set against a plane...

If you were hoping that an American entry would take home the big prize, the Palme d'Or much like last year's "The Tree of Life," hope again. The only American winner of the bunch was the Sundance darling, Benh Zeitlin's "Beast of the Southern Wild." Fox Searchlight, the studio behind the film, will now push the New Orleans delta water-adventure for upcoming awards.

Chicago – After receiving eight previous prizes at the Cannes Film Festival, German filmmaker Michael Haneke became the first person in history to win the Palme d’Or twice within a mere three-year period. Haneke snagged the top prize at Cannes for “Amour,” a widely praised drama about an elderly couple whose love is challenged by the physical frailties of age.
At the May 27th award ceremony for the 65th annual Cannes Film Festival, Haneke was joined onstage by his film’s two stars, the legendary French actor Jean-Louis Trintignant (whose performance in “Amour” marks his first onscreen appearance in nine years) and Emmanuelle Riva (of “Hiroshima Mon Amour” fame). In his acceptance speech, the director credited his two actors for being “the essence” of his film, while noting that “Amour” was “in part an illustration of the promise” that he and his wife made to one another. There is no shortage of U.S. Latino stories and filmmaker talent. Trust me. I screen a high volume of films throughout the year specializing in submissions that are Hispanic/U.S. Latino. True, not enough of them are technically slick, but there are some out there, and more often than not, they have specific U.S. Latino points of views and permutations, and offer chronicles of unheard of, or unique Caminos de la Vida (walks of life). All of which I find is in direct correlation to their distinct American mestizo identity. Sadly there are not enough slots at film festivals, and there is not a savvy marketplace interested in embracing the fragmented and under-served U.S. Latino community until they figure out how to monetize it. Rather than dwell on this distribution dearth, however, I’d like to take a counter- positive approach by celebrating and getting the word out on U.S. Latino films ready to give birth and ignite with audiences. Oye means listen up! I’ll be profiling brand spanking new U.S. Latino films, in various stages and different genres so our community can promote their trajectory online and by word of mouth, and yes hopefully so distribution outfits and festivals take note! Case in point this week: Love, Concord:
Love, Concord is a buoyant high school comedy about Gerry (Jorge Diaz), a fun loving popular goofball who is all about basketball and has a penchant for 8 bit videogames. One day he notices cute bookworm Melinda (introducing Angelina Leon), a smart, sassy not-girly girl who eventually becomes his first ever girlfriend. As they enter their Senior year, they must sweat the stress of facing where they are going to college and what that means for their relationship. He is not your stereotypical jock nor is she your stereotypical nerd. Did I mention they are Latinos? That’s what’s so refreshing about Love, Concord, the bubbly and earnest feature debut by Gustavo Guardado, Jr., who received his Masters in Film Production at the prevalent Loyola Marymount University; his charming, semi-autobiographical story set in the suburban Bay area of Concord where he grew up avoids stereotypes and doesn’t perpetuate Latinos as they are most commonly represented. It’s likely due that its based on his experience growing up in Concord where race is not an issue. This gives the film an organic sense in how it portrays its U.S. Latino characters.
Gustavo Guardadado, Jr.
With a comic and endearing combination of quintessential John Hughes and a Ya sensibility, the film eschews any condescension and pretension in the characterization of teens and it feels pretty right on. Guardado knows that teens just seem to get it these days. They have a better sense of what lies ahead of them. They Are smart, grounded and realistic. Their expectations are more driven by their sense of self than parents and peers. More important than ever in the rite of passage into a conscious and responsible individual is the mantra ‘Don’t Sell Out”. The notion is becoming redefined to a millenial (or Me) generation to signify that one must not sell out who you really are inside, something that Melinda reminds Gerry when he gives into his popular role as class clown at his own expense and deprecation.
Miguel Angel, Jerry’s older bro
What makes this universal story, Latino? Its conveyed in subtle yet inherent ways. Melinda’s half Mexican and Gerry’s Salvadoran ethnicity is demonstrated intrinsically rather than it being imposed. Again, that’s the beauty of the film. Take for instance the mother and son dynamic that displays the latino male relationship with his ‘jefa’. Gerry’s mother isn’t seen throughout most of the movie save for the notes on the fridge they exchange yet she’s always there. When she does appear, she sits Gerardo down and they have a real catch up moment that illustrates the strong relationship between a single, hard working mother and her maturing son.
Like the 8 bit animated story chapters, this coming of age tale has a nostalgia for one’s high school dog days. It also has a very fresh sense of modernity with its portrayal of teens and in particular its portrayal of U.S. Latino teens. It’s a sweet, funny and a refreshingly authentic U.S. Latino coming of ager bound to touch audiences.
Love, Concord is currently being submitted to festivals.

Kidnapped solidified Miguel Angel Vivas as a "director to watch" for us.
Although his relentless home invasion flick brought nothing new to the table story-wise, it was tough as nails and packed plenty of style. Now, it appears he'll be reuniting with Kidnapped's production house, Filmax, for another new film, I Will Die Tonight.
Vivas is going to work from a script by Alberto Marini, who scripted Jaume Balaguero's superb Spanish thriller Sleep Tight.

The first true trailer for Dario Argento's Dracula 3D is here and it looks ... well ... there's owls, wolves, vampires and his lovely daughter, Asia. Just how well all of these components put together will fare is completely up for debate.
Dracula 3D features Asia Argento as Lucy, Thomas Kretschmann as Dracula, Marta Gastini as Mina, and Rutger Hauer as Van Helsing. Miguel Angel Silvestre and Miriam Giovanelli also star.
Thanks to DC reader Dick Winchester for the heads-up!
Synopsis:
Transylvania, 1893.
One night in the woods adjacent to Passo Borgo, at the foot of the Carpazi mountains, a couple of young lovers, Tania and Milos, secretly meet. On her way home, Tania is chased and overcome by a "dark shadow" that kills her. In those days Jonathan Harker, a young librarian, arrives at the village hired by Count Dracula, a nobleman from the area. Tania's body mysteriously disappears from the cemetery.

Oh, Dario, Dario, Dario... what hath thou wrought? To say that the maestro's latest take on the classic tale of Dracula is a bit eccentric is kind of an understatement. See for yourselves.

Here's the first footage that we've seen for Dario Argento's new film Dracula 3D. This isn't really a trailer as much as it is just a montage of footage from the movie. Argento has made some great films over the years and I'm a big fan of the Italian directors earlier work. I am curious to see his full take on the Bram Stoker classic.
The film stars Marta Gastini (The Rite), Rutger Hauer (Blade Runner, Hobo With a Shotgun), Asia Argento (Land of the Dead), Miguel Angel Silvestre and Miriam Giovanelli.
The trailer has a great deal of footage that includes some Major Spoilers. The teaser trailer also includes a lot of unfinished effects, but it's got Argentos signature all over it. There's some fun stuff shown in the trailer, and I'm hoping the movie ends up being good, but this is just a collection of poorly cut footage.

Easily one of the most jaw-dropping, brain-bashing movie experiences of the last year, Miguel Angel Vivas Kidnapped is a relentless, real-time thriller that grabs for the throat and doesn't let you breathe for the entire duration of the film. I loved the film when I saw it back in June and so did Projectcyclops when he got to see it with an audience at GimmUpNorth. Well, now it's your turn.

For all of its conceptual flaws, Kidnapped is an ambitious film for the horror crowd – especially the horror festival crowd – given their reputation for being easily pleased as long as there’s a bloody stump on show. With this 85-minute home invasion pic, which is divided into 12 stylishly-composed shots, it’s clear that director Miguel Angel Vivas wants to make his debut feature an artful one, though as co-writer, he still has plenty to learn before he can make a truly effective thriller-horror.
The story is simple; a small family are moving into their lavish new Madrid home when, on their first night there, they are assailed by three masked Eastern-European criminals who aim to take them for everything they have. Naturally, the situation becomes more complicated once the family come to doubt that the criminals will simply up and leave once their job is done,...

[Playing tonight on FrightFest's Discovery Screen, here's another chance to check out my earlier review.]The current state of genre cinema coming out of Spain right now has never looked healthier. Since Rec led the way in 2007, we've seen a series of stylish and memorable films including Timecrimes, Cell 211, Rec 2, The Orphanage, Julia's Eyes, The Last Circus, Agnosia and now Miguel Angel Vivas' frenetic and brutal home invasion thriller Kidnapped. The set-up is nothing particularly new, a family of three moves into its new home only to have their idyllic nest besieged by a trio of particularly nasty masked assailants. What makes Kidnapped stand out, and by golly this is a film that you wont forget in a hurry, is how Vivas introduces...

While each new Dario Argento film is always met with skepticism, I’m liking what we’ve seen so far on his first 3D film, which is another retelling of Bram Stoker’s classic novel in Dracula 3D. Kino Gallery has a new one-sheet for the film, which invokes the classic Gothic nature of the story, in an interesting sketchy type of way. The film stars his beautiful daughter, Asia Argento ,Thomas Kretschmann, Marta Gastini, Marta Gastini, Miguel Angel Silvestre, Miriam Giovanellia, and Rutger Hauer as Van Helsing.
Here’s the rather overly long-winded plot synopsis: The tale begins with Jonathan Harker, journeying by train and carriage from England to Count Dracula’s crumbling, remote castle situated in the Carpathian Mountains on the border of Transylvania. The purpose of his mission is to catalogue the big library of Dracula. At first enticed by Dracula’s gracious manner, Harker soon discovers...

We're staying cautiously optimistic about Dario Argento's Dracula 3D - if anyone can put the bite back into the vampire sub-genre, it's probably an old school Italian like him - so we're pleased to report principal photography has wrapped on the film.
Per Screen Daily, The Little Film Company is handling sales for North America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, and Italy’s Filmexport Group is handling remaining territories. Hopefully we'll have some distro news to report soon!
Dracula 3D features Asia Argento as Lucy, Thomas Kretschmann as Dracula, Marta Gastini as Mina, and Rutger Hauer as Van Helsing. Miguel Angel Silvestre, and Miriam Giovanelli also star.
Synopsis:
Transylvania, 1893.
One night in the woods adjacent to Passo Borgo, at the foot of the Carpazi mountains, a couple of young lovers, Tania and Milos, secretly meet. On her way home, Tania is chased and overcome by a "dark shadow" that kills her.

And, hey, bonus: we also have an interview with the writer and director of the John Landis-produced dark comedy Some Guy Who Kills People.
