‘The Rookie: Feds’ Creator Alexi Hawley On Drama’s Demise: It Wasn’t Just Due To The Strike, He Says
Creator Alexi Hawley expressed regret on Saturday about the cancellation of The Rookie: Feds, an ABC procedural that he said was a victim of economics and “consolidation in the industry.”
While appearing on the dais for The Rookie at the Television Critics Tour, Hawley, who created Feds with Terence Paul Winter, said some people tried to blame the show’s demise on the strike but “it’s a bigger conversation than that.” The ratings for The Rookie: Feds were modest but were trending in a positive direction before the series starring Niecy Nash-Betts was canceled after one season in November.
“A lot had to do with the forces that led to strike … the consolidation of the industry, the economic impact of the streaming wars have had on different companies,” Hawley said. “I do feel it was not a creative decision. It was a business decision. I can’t argue with that.

ABC’s The Rookie: Feds has been canceled after one season.
A decision on whether the network would renew the freshman drama led by Niecy Nash-Betts was delayed for months amid the ongoing dual WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, both of which have recently concluded. The ratings for The Rookie: Feds were modest and were trending in a positive direction, as Deadline reported in May.
The Rookie: Feds, the only ABC singular-lead hourlong broadcast series headlined by a Black actor, was not the breakout hit the original Rookie was but delivered respectable ratings that could’ve been enough to secure a second season had it not been for the dual strikes.
Nash-Betts starred as Simone, a former guidance counselor living her dream of becoming an FBI agent, making her the oldest rookie in the agency. Taking on the role came with challenges as many doubted her capabilities, mainly her boss,...

ABC has picked up “Not Dead Yet,” a new comedy starring “Jane the Virgin” alum Gina Rodriguez.
The network also picked up the drama “Alaska,” starring Hilary Swank, and “The Rookie” spinoff “The Rookie: Feds,” starring Niecy Nash-Betts, for the 2022-23 television season.
In “Not Dead Yet,” Rodriguez plays Nell Stevens, a broke and newly single self-described disaster, working to restart the life and career she left behind 10 years ago. When she lands the only job she can find – writing obituaries – Nell starts getting life advice from an unlikely source.
The series, from creators and executive producers David Windsor and Casey Johnson, is adapted from the book “Confessions of a 40-something F**k Up” by Alexandra Potter. Dean Holland directed the pilot.
Alongside Rodriguez, the show stars Joshua Banday as Dennis and Angela Gibbs as Cricket.
Rodriguez and Wonderland Sound and Vision’s McG, Mary Viola and Corey Marsh are also EPs.

Updated, with additional comment: A new Senate report concludes that Eric Garcetti “likely knew or should have known” about alleged sexual harassment by a former top aide, despite the Los Angeles mayor’s denial that he was aware of such conduct.
The report and investigation, conducted by Senate staff at the request of Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-ia), raises new doubts about Garcetti’s pending nomination to be ambassador to India.
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee cleared Garcetti’s nomination with no opposition earlier this year, but a whistleblower, Garcetti’s former communications director Naomi Seligman, has led an effort for a more thorough investigation. Grassley put a hold on the nomination and initiated the probe in March.
Rick Jacobs, who served as deputy chief of staff and later an outside adviser, was accused of improper conduct in a 2020 lawsuit filed by Los Angeles Police Department Officer Matthew Garza, who claims...

ABC’s The Rookie this Sunday aired Part 1 of a backdoor spinoff pilot, about Simone Clark aka the oldest FBI trainee (played by Claws‘ Niecy Nash). What’s your knee-jerk reaction to this potential offshoot?
Part 1 of the planted spinoff pilot, titled “Simone,” opened with Nolan and Chen investigating suspicious activity at a power station in Griffith Park. Surveying the premises, Nolan spotted a bomb, and they both darted outside just as the device went boom. In the aftermath, the FBI arrived on the scene — in the form of Agent Matthew Garza (played by Ozark‘s Felix Solis) and Agent...

Naomi Seligman, the former communications director to Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, has filed a complaint with prosecutors claiming that Garcetti committed perjury when he denied under oath that he did not know about allegations of misconduct by a top aide and adviser.
The complaint comes as Garcetti is awaiting a confirmation vote by the U.S. Senate to be ambassador to India after his nomination cleared the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
The complaint — read it here — was filed by attorneys for Whistleblower Aid. The complaint also alleges that the mayor conspired to cover up complaints of sexual harassment against Rick Jacobs, who served as Garcetti’s deputy chief of staff and then worked on non profits connected to the mayor. He stepped down in October, 2020, but has denied the allegations.
