"Don't get involved in this, Mr. Caul." Don't get involved in what?! Who is after him?! Studiocanal UK has revealed a new re-release trailer for Francis Ford Coppola's The Conversation, for its 50th anniversary this year. The film initially opened in 1974 and premiered at the 1974 Cannes Film Festival, meaning he is back again premiering his newest film (Megalopolis) at Cannes 2024 a full 50 years later. "To mark the 50th anniversary of Francis Ford Coppola’s seminal neo-noir thriller, The Conversation, we are is thrilled to announce a brand-new 4K restoration of the film to UK cinemas on July 5th." This paranoia masterpiece stars Gene Hackman as sound surveillance expert Harry Caul, who hears something while taping a couple. Some cliche somewhere said that ‘a picture is worth a thousand words.’ This has proven to be the case for me and especially when it comes to fan art. I have always sought out great fan art and have wanted to share it with as many people as possible. “Awesome Art We’ve Found Around The Net” is the outlet for that passion. In this column, I will showcase the kick-ass artwork of some great artists, with the hopes that these artists get the attention they deserve. That’s the aim. If you have any questions or comments, or even suggestions of art or other great artists, feel free to contact me at any time at theodorebond@joblo.com.

In recent years the movie poster has travelled far beyond its street level attention-grabbing origins. Yet, the modern Orange/Teal action shots or Photoshop Face Mountains are perfunctory adornments to a movie’s marketing onslaught, lacking the artistry and invention of what has come before. But not all movie posters are created equally.
An iconic image, such as a shark rising to meet a swimmer above it instantly brings Spielberg’s Jaws to mind. Likewise a simple glance at the posters for Vertigo, The Man with the Golden Arm or Anatomy of a Murder tell us it is the work of Saul Bass. These posters show the power of the art and the artist. Modern masters such as Drew Struzan and Olly Moss have wildly varied styles, but both have the same aim – to get you excited about watching the film. They are works of art in their own right.

Above: 1981 French grande for Stalker. Art by Bougrine. It’s been six months since I last did one of these round-ups of the most popular posters featured on my Movie Poster of the Day Instagram (previously Tumblr). With some 3,349 likes to date, this rare French poster for Tarkovsky’s Stalker, posted just last month, outstripped the pack and is in fact the second most “liked” poster I’ve ever posted, just a couple of hundred likes shy of Andrew Bannister’s UK poster for Parasite which I posted over a Pandemic ago. With art signed by one “Bougrine” the poster is currently offered for sale at Posteritati. Though the style and signature don’t quite look right, there was a Vladimir Bougrine (1938-2001) who was a prominent Soviet dissident painter who ended up in Paris in 1977 where, according to Wikipedia, “the French Ministry of Culture introduced him to...a community of writers,...

Released in 2003, Park Chan-Wook’s Oldboy is often heralded as a cult favorite and masterpiece of Korean cinema. Venturing to emotional extremes with its grim violence and extraordinary sadomasochism, it is a film that is compulsive viewing for anyone with a petulance for gore or a good revenge story. As tense as it is tragic, Jo Yeong-wook’s composition work mirrors the film’s dark beauty—filled with melancholic moments and infectious melodies. Looking for a visual artist to complement the project, Milan Records enlisted the talents of Laurent Durieux, whose captivating, lucid style immaculately captured the overcast essence of the film.
Left to his own devices, Durieux was able to showcase a unique, personal perspective of the film without being constricted by the label or design teams. “Milan hardly had any input in the creation of the poster,” informs Durieux. “They trusted me completely and they knew that it is the way I work,...

The Goblin King and his magical realm are celebrated in a new Labyrinth poster and set of enamel pins that are being released by Mondo.
From Mondo: "[We're] celebrating one of our favorite films of the '80s, Labyrinth, with a poster by the inimitable Laurent Durieux and new enamel pins from Dkng.
Absolutely brimming with creativity and innovative puppetry and creature effects, Jim Henson's 1986 fantasy film tells the story of Sarah (played by Jennifer Connelly) as she journeys into a dreamlike world inhabited by all sorts of memorable characters and puzzles to retrieve her baby brother from David Bowie's iconic Jareth, the Goblin King. Laurent Durieux has done a beautiful job capturing the magic and insane variety of creatures born of the film portrayed as various toys positioned around Sarah's desk. Labyrinth is one of our favorite films and we couldn't be more pleased about Laurent's work here.

Like some of the best illustrations that graced the covers of fantasy novels and heavy metal albums in the ’70s and ’80s, Arik Roper's artwork is a portal to another world brimming with adventure and endless possibilities. Ahead of his appearance as a featured artist at MondoCon 2016 this weekend in Austin, TX, we caught up with Roper for a special "Meet the Artist" Q&A feature, and we also have a look at some of the eye-popping artwork he'll be bringing to this year's MondoCon.
Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Arik. What sparked your initial interest in being an artist?
Arik Roper: It was a natural path for me, being an artist. Both my parents were artists. I was surrounded by it and I instinctively was drawn toward it, and received a lot of encouragement.
Your art often transports people deep into the realms of fantasy and horror.

While at the 2016 Fantastic Fest last month, I had the opportunity to check out a few films that were on the fringes of horror and sci-fi, so I’ve decided to recap my thoughts on a few of those movies here.
24x36: A Movie About Movie Posters: A documentary about the art form of creating movie-themed posters, first-time filmmaker Kevin Burke’s documentary, 24x36: A Movie About Movie Posters, hit all the right notes for me. It perfectly covers the rise—and subsequent fall—of the artists behind some of the most iconic movie posters in cinema, and it also offers an in-depth look at the creative process that goes into crafting images that would go on to become iconic, huge parts of pop culture.

Mondo is kicking off the new year with two new posters that pay tribute to Christopher Nolan's best Batman film (and arguably the best live-action Batman movie ever made), The Dark Knight.
First up are two pieces from artist Laurent Durieux, who describes them as follows:
"It's been too long since I've come up with a new print for Mondo and this one has been finished and ready for many months. I have been both very anxious and excited about the day when it would eventually be revealed. The Dark Knight is such a great film, and most certainly is my favorite of Nolan's trilogy. I hope I did it justice. A lot of TLC went into it in the hope I would. Thank you Mondo for this great opportunity!"

Wow. I have to admit, I kinda love this poster. Durieux is one of my favorite artists already - we've featured his work plenty before on the site (The Godfather: Part I & II, It's a Wonderful Life, or Back to the Future Part II). He really captures the vibe of the charming town, which actually looks like it does on this poster, sans bear (see photo here). "When he grows, he will grow strong." Better than Part 1? It's an endless debate... Which is better - The Godfather: Part 1 or Part 2? Well, if you're partial to Part 2, you might want to take a look at this. French artist Laurent Durieux has created a new screen print for Francis Ford Coppola's iconic 1974 sequel The Godfather: Part II. Odd City Entertainment will be releasing the print in limited quantities starting this week, including a special edition printed on wood (!) with 12 colors that will go for $300. Again, might be worth it if you're partial to Part 2. This is one gorgeous poster and the quote at the bottom really tops it off. Here's a full look at the art by Durieux, debuted by Collider. Here's Laurent Durieux's It's a Wonderful Life print (with the variant on bottom) from SlashFilm: Now there's a few different variations beyond the regular and variant prints, so pay attention. We're very excited that Lola, one of our favorite film journals, has started to roll out its 5th issue entitled "Shows." The pieces published so far include Joe McElhaney on German filmmakers in Hollywood, Lesley Stern on the "Ghostliness of Gesture", and Dorian Stuber & Marianne Tettlebaum on To Be or Not to Be. Still to come: "essays on Claire Denis, Eduardo Coutinho, anime, Blade Runner, the filmic object, film criticism, and more ... plus a special interview with James Benning." The Museum of the Moving Image's "First Look" lineup has been announced and includes new films by Ulrich Seidl, Ken Jacobs, and Gina Telaroli. The series will be running between January 9th and 18th. For Criterion, Farren Smith Nehme writes on Frank Capra's It Happened One Night:

File this one under "Classics". Odd City Entertainment has debuted some impressive artwork for a new print they're selling next week for the legendary cinema classic The Godfather. This new print by French artist Laurent Durieux is specifically for The Godfather: Part I (does that mean he'll be releasing Part II and maybe III eventually?) but is being sold in full-size 24"x36" screen prints which I'm sure will look beautiful in person. They're selling 325 prints of the regular edition for $65 each, and 150 prints of the red variant edition for $100 each. Even if this isn't your favorite film of all-time, it's still worth taking a look at the art. "Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer." Here is Laurent Durieux's new print with variant below: Regular Version: Variant Version: Which one are you getting? Additional details: Odd City will be releasing a limited edition screen print for Francis Ford Coppola's film,...

Like many of you, I love the Back to the Future trilogy, and it's a franchise that I hope never gets put on the remake list by Hollywood. Back to the Future Part III is the movie in the trilogy that seems to get the least amount of love, which is why it was so cool to come across this fantastic piece of tribute art for the third film in the series. It features Doc and Marty riding through the streets of Hill Valley at night on top of the DeLorean, which being pulled by horses. This is part of a trilogy set that was created by Laurent Durieux, I've included the posters for the other two films as well that were previously released. We posted the one for Part II earlier this year, but we never got the first print in the set out. You can see all three those below.

Laurent Durieux has spent two decades as a designer and teacher, but the 42-year-old Brussels illustrator and graphic artist was only recently discovered in the United States, thanks to a number of high-profile awards and marquee commissions. After contributing a piece entitled, François à l’Americaine, for a show celebrating the French director, Jacques Tati, Laurent was selected by Lürzer’s Archive magazine as one of the top 200 illustrators for 2012. In 2013, his screenprint of Jaws, caught the attention of Steven Spielberg and since his name has become synonymous with exquisitely rendered illustrations. His art is often described as a blend between the retro-futuristic world of H.G. Wells and the 1960s pop-culture. Laurent’s work has such beautiful compositions, vibrant colours, and meticulous detail, that you just can’t look away.

This week, Christie’s, the world’s largest fine arts auction house, is hosting an inaugural online-only sale of what are billed as Vintage Film Posters, though it is an eclectic collection of old and new. There are plenty of familiar faces, like Reynold Brown’s Attack of the 50Ft. Woman, Saul Bass’s The Man With the Golden Arm, Giorgio Olivetti’s La Dolce Vita, Bob Peak’s My Fair Lady, and Philip Castle’s Clockwork Orange, but what is interesting in terms of the auction market is the inclusion of a number of recent Mondo posters by Tyler Stout, Todd Slater and Laurent Durieux. The auction also includes La Boca’s already-classic, four-year-old set of silkscreen teasers for Black Swan.
The poster that really caught my eye, however, and one I’d never seen before, is this stunning Deco design by one Ram Richman for Jean Grémillon’s...

In a world with mostly generic bullshit one-sheets that people are paid a mint to crap out, we really appreciate the good posters when they come our way. It's also not at all surprising that some of the best recent one-sheets we've seen have been fan-made and unofficial.
Artist Laurent Durieux has added some truly incredible takes on several of our most beloved movies, horror and otherwise, to his site; and we grabbed a quick sampling of some of our favorites and assembled them below.

I just had to share these really cool Back to the Future posters that were created by Andy Fairhurst. This is the artist who brought us that awesome "When I Grow Up I Wanna Be..." superhero series, which you can check out here and here. I love the clever and unique trilogy poster art that he did for the films below. This is what the artist had to say about these,
Over the years though I had never really done any artwork related to Bttf (apart from a recent ‘Geek Kid’ I did – seen above ) and considering I have done Batman and Star Wars time and time again I had never found the right idea to tackle a Bttf piece…until I joined The Poster Posse. I have done a few posters since joining and have been really inspired by all the members on our forum. And it wasn’t...
