The summer movie season is now winding down and, in a reversal of prevailing expectations, August brings one of the best slates of the entire year. From stellar documentaries to heartfelt stories of romance to a 14-hour epic, it’s an eclectic lineup before the busy fall season begins.
15. Apocalypse Now: Final Cut (Francis Ford Coppola; August 15)
This monthly rundown is usually reserved for new films, and Francis Ford Coppola’s latest project is no mere restoration, but rather a new “final cut” of Apocalypse Now–one that is getting an IMAX release. Nick Newman was at the world premiere at Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year, where he said, “More a reigned-in second stab than radical reworking, it suggests where he’d turned right or wrong, shows an affable stubbornness in the retention of lesser-liked pieces, and at day’s end maybe breeds further ambiguity as to what really shapes a masterpiece.

The geek world imploded a few weeks back when it was reported that Disney is working on purchasing the bulk of 20th Century Fox. Shortly after this report came out, though, we were told that the whole thing might already be dead in the water, as talks between the two companies had apparently cooled.
Now, however, we’ve learned that we should ignore that second report as the notion has allegedly not yet been thrown out. According to Deadline, the two parties are still very much in discussions and Disney is apparently “progressing speedily toward” the acquisition. As we heard before, the plan is still for Fox to keep their sports and news properties, while the House of Mouse takes everything else in terms of film and TV.

A few weeks ago we learned that Disney Studio was looking to purchase 20th Century Fox. Those talks eventually died down and then it was reported that Sony Pictures was looking to get in on the action. It doesn't seem like things worked out with them or the other companies that were interested in buying up Fox because now, according to Deadline, Disney and Fox are back in talks! There is also speculation that a deal is close to being made.
Disney is progressing speedily toward that rumored acquisition of Fox. The version I heard has the Murdoch clan keeping possession of sports and news properties, and the rest of TV and the film studio going to Disney. Radio silence right now from both studios, and given how Disney made the Marvel and Lucasfilm deals under the cone of silence, if this happens we’ll probably only know it when it’s announced.

Editor’s note: The following is an edited excerpt from “Miller and Max: George Miller and the Making of a Film Legend” by Luke Buckmaster.
The George Miller of the 1970s would never have believed he would one day be spearheading a production with a budget estimated at a staggering $150 million. Miller had made the first three movies when he was in his thirties. At sixty-seven, when “Fury Road” commenced principal photography, those days were far back in the past. Shooting the original film in Melbourne felt like a lifetime ago.
For his first “Mad Max” movie in close to three decades, Miller wanted to be on the frontline at all times. But he soon realized that was impossible given the scale of production: a 138-day shoot with complicated stunts occurring on a near-daily basis. State-of-the-art technology made the job easier — or at least improved communication. High-definition video reception was broadcast in multiple locations,...

You sneaky little so-and-sos. Lionsgate premiered Blair Witch, the new reboot of the 1999 horror classic, at Comic-Con earlier tonight, and they gave the exclusive news about the until-now-top-secret film to Entertainment Weekly. What I find amazing is that they’ve screened this film at least once for press and they managed to actually keep the secret until now. I know how embargoes work, and I know how people love to talk, so for Lionsgate to have pulled this off makes me believe once again that you can actually have and keep a secret in this business. Much like 10 Cloverfield Lane did earlier this year, this film snuck up on us while hiding in plain sight. It’s tough to keep the entire existence of a movie a secret, but keeping the nature of it a secret by telling everyone that it’s something else seems to be a workable game plan.

Southbound is yet another horror anthology from the people behind the V/H/S trilogy. However unlike that series of films, Southbound actually gets things right. Perfectly right.
Southbound opens and closes with Radio Silence’s The Way Out and The Way In (in that order). A book-ending tale that introduces us to two men on the run, being chased across the desert by ethereal, skeletal grim reapers from which there is no escape. Especially when the pair stop at a gas station… We return to the same tale for the closer, discovering why the pair are on the run and why they are being haunted. *full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by Orchard TV. **there is one spoiler after the review. Directors: Roxanne Benjamin, David Bruckner, Patrick Horvath and Radio Silence. Writers: Roxanne Benjamin, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, David Bruckner, Susan Burke, Dallas Richard Hallam and Patrick Horvath. Cast: Chad Villella, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Hannah Marks, Tipper Newton, Brad Miska and Kristina Pesic. Southbound is an indie horror anthology film, from four directors. Patrick Horvath, of The Signal (2007) fame, brings one of four stories. Though, an initial viewing would make the film appear as if it is five short films; the circular ending brings the film back upon itself. Southbound also brings an inconsistent morality to the screen as one good character finds escape, while another does not. The film also keeps its characters' histories and motivations hidden. This makes an interpretation of the plot difficult. But, the writers do agree on a trapped theme.

A lonely stretch of highway through the middle of nowhere provides ample fodder for the directors of Southbound, a new anthology project that reunites much of the creative team behind previous anthology hit V/H/S with a similarly high quality result. While most anthology projects tend to be developed with each segment in isolation from one another the creators of Southbound chose to take another approach with the segments directly linked into one another with the entire piece weaving into a whole that plays like Twilight Zone for the indie horror generation. Linked or not, these things are always easier to approach in individual chunks and given that there are only four creative teams here we'll look at each individually.Four man collective Radio Silence open and...

There are few things in the film world more difficult to successfully cobble together than the dreaded horror anthology. With its mixture of narratives, creative voices and actors/actresses, more often than not the horror anthology picture feels closer akin to the type of short film programs many people are flocking to this Oscar season than a fully formed, singular motion picture. For every great one like Trick r’ Treat or Three Extremes there’s a complete dud like the dreadful ABC’s Of Death or the unwatchable Little Deaths. A tough balance to strike between genuine terror and shifting creative visions, the success stories seem to be the exception to the lesser picture’s rule.

With February being a short month, genre fans only have a handful of horror and sci-fi arriving on VOD to look forward to over the next few weeks. One of my own most anticipated movies for 2016, the horror anthology Southbound, makes its VOD debut on February 9th, courtesy of The Orchard. For those of curious about two of the more buzzed-about remakes in some time – Martyrs and Cabin Fever – both films arrive on VOD on February 2nd and February 12th respectively.
Other notable titles hitting VOD this February include All Hallow’s Eve 2, Convergence, The Veil, Uncaged and Riddle Room.
All Hallows' Eve 2 (Rlj Entertainment) – February 2nd
Alone on Halloween, a young woman finds a mysterious VHS tape on her doorstep—a tape that shows a series of gruesome and ghastly tales that appear to be all too real. But these terrifying glimpses of damned souls are not the only horrors that stalk her.

Horror anthologies are all the rage, with both up-and-coming and established filmmakers contributing to works like the extensive ABCs of Death films, and the found footage V/H/S trilogy. Now comes Southbound, a new collection featuring horror shorts directed by V/H/S alums Roxanne Benjamin, David Bruckner (The Signal), and Radio Silence, as well as Patrick Horvath (Entrance). A trailer and clip of the film’s seven-minute opener were just released, providing a peek at the terror to come.
First, the clip serves as a promising cold opener, dropping the viewer right in the middle of the action as two men in a classic pickup are pursued by dark, spectral beings – and then things start to get weird. While the footage recalls, to some degree, Twilight Zone: The Movie, details have painted Southbound as a twist on the disconnected style of previous anthology films. In an interview,...

Demonic activity, skinheads, and psychopaths: these are the words one might use to describe the upcoming genre films of 2016. From a possessed painter, to a devilish leg wound, to full-on war waged within the confines of a futuristic apartment complex, blood flies and fingers point in what looks to be one of the most intense, purposely-paced and experimental years for independent films to date.
Traces of David Cronenberg's Videodrome and Scanners, Stuart Rosenberg's The Amityville Horror, Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, and Nicholas Hytner's The Crucible can be found within these electrifying new entries from promising, emerging artists, proving that pulling from the past can wind up making a project feel fresh and new.
Although many of the films carry similar traits and themes like directorial debuts, single set locations, cult activity, and the ever-present presence of the devil's unholy spirit, each of these features is unique in its own persona.

The first seven minutes for Southbound have been released. This horror anthology features five tales of despair and desolation. The five features have been developed by: Roxanne Benjamin (V/H/S), David Bruckner (The Signal), Patrick Horvath and Radio Silence. And, the first seven minutes have been taken from Radio Silence's short film. The full movie clip is hosted below. The clip shows two bloodied men and a long stretch of highway. They see dark figures in the desert and decide to take a break, at a local rest stop. Here, the customer service is hostile and so are the mens' pursuers. Events get even stranger as it becomes apparent that there is no escape from this isolated locale. Southbound will have a limited theatrical release on February 5th, 2016. Following that, the film will be available through Video-on-demand formats, on February 9th. More details on the film are available past the break.

The horror anthology resurgence continues next month with the release of Southbound, a new four-story feature from some of the filmmakers behind the V/H/S trilogy. Their latest follows several characters facing the consequences of past transgressions, but while the segments vary from great to merely okay the film’s biggest strength is a terrifically cohesive structure. From my review: “Rather than fade to black between stories or feature title cards for each, the film transitions naturally between the tales. As one ends the camera moves to another door, a different seat, or the next car approaching on the road and smoothly introduces the characters occupying the next story. It make the entire experience one continuing feature unfolding in a common world of regrets and past sins, and that theme is stronger for it.” Check out the first trailer below. The V/H/S series has crashed and burned badly, but producers Brad Miska and Roxanne Benjamin have moved on to a different anthology of horror shorts, now joined by a new cadre of collaborators. Four directors (Benjamin, fellow V/H/S veterans David Bruckner and Radio Silence, and Patrick Horvath) have spun out the five different scary stories which make up Southbound. But whereas many anthologies are united only by a theme, these segments share locations and cross over certain characters, all within the same vista of an undefined stretch of desert in the American Southwest. This, however, does not result in any appreciable improvement over generic indie gore-mongering.
The various protagonists of Southbound are all either looking to right a past wrong or carrying deep-seated guilt over an old sin. The nameless desert is some kind of hell (the only even marginally clever part of the film is...

The following story contains a massive spoiler about Sunday’s Walking Dead. You know the drill — if the episode remains on your to-do list, bail now. The rest of you may proceed…
It’s been nearly 24 hours since Glenn’s guts appeared to become a zombie’s best friend on The Walking Dead and the debate over his fate rages on. Folks in the pro-death camp maintain that Steven Yeun’s seemingly invulnerable alter ego was backed into a literal corner with absolutely no way out. Movies are made to be seen. That much is obvious. Sometimes, though, directors and actors have to wait an excruciatingly long time to show their movie to a willing audience . when can be incredibly painful when you know the movie you are sitting on is great. John Crowley.s immigrant song, Brooklyn, played to raves at the Sundance Film Festival in January. Fox Searchlight bought the beautiful love story for $9 million, and started prepping it for a prestigious Awards run. Then? Nothing. Radio silence. So when I sat down with Brooklyn star Saoirse Ronan ahead of the film.s screening at the Savannah Film Festival, I asked her how hard it is to sit on a movie when a festival audience has let you know that it.s good. She told me: You actually kind of feel like the reaction isn.t going to be as strong [when people eventually...

In the new horror anthology Southbound, five tales merge to create one cohesive storyline through the back roads of hell. On the endless trail into unknown, hot southern depths, all of the characters involved in this Twilight Zone-esque collection of stories will be confronted with their sins in their own personal hells.
The directors involved in this anthology weren't just handed an assigned vignette and a deadline and positive thoughts by the person in charge. These filmmakers spent weeks and weeks working together on the script, intricately designing the story as a whole, and creating a flowing narrative, rather than coming up with an acceptable excuse to house five different stories in one film.
The result is an anthology so seamless, it's difficult to tell where one segment ends and another begins, making it feel less like a large group of people all trying to shout over one another,...

For those of you uninspired ramblers who have been searching for a horror anthology that truly revs your engines, Southbound is an inviting attraction along a road lined with many generic places to stop. From the minds of Roxanne Benjamin, David Bruckner, Patrick Horvath, and the Radio Silence collective come five tales of open-road horror set to the soothing voice of Larry Fessenden’s DJ narration, and the ride is surly a worthy one. The segments rarely skip a beat, and showcase the same drifting intrigue that’s created by a desolate stretch of highway that connects them all. Nothing good ever happens in the middle of nowhere, but this series of gleefully unfortunate events tends to argue otherwise with the help of some gruesome tricks, brainwashed minds, and a few skeletal demons worth a fright.

Southbound
Written by Roxanne Benjamin, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, David Bruckner, Susan Burke, Dallas Hallam & Patrick Horvath
Directed by Roxanne Benjamin, David Bruckner, Patrick Horvath & Radio Silence
USA, 2015
Heavily promoted as a film by the creators of V/H/S, Southbound is a horror anthology movie that eschews the found footage format in favor of applying a traditional cinematic narrative that recounts several interconnected tales. Southbound does a fantastic job taking advantage of the anthology format. The film successfully links all five of its stories together with creative tracking shots (Birdman style). The approach is slightly better than a novelty. Combining the various segments into a continuous timeline is a cool visual trick that carries the movie’s manic energy forward from story to story.
As is the case with anthologies, there isn’t much time to tell a story and each of Southbound’s protagonists gets dropped into their segment and really hits the ground running.

A lonely stretch of highway through the middle of nowhere provides ample fodder for the directors of Southbound, a new anthology project that reunites much of the creative team behind previous anthology hit VHS with a similarly high quality result.
