Reed Richards has been widely considered the smartest man in the Marvel Universe. His stretching superpowers accompanied by his genius brain make him a formidable being in the comics. The character has also raised a massive buzz after it was announced that Pedro Pascal would play the role in the upcoming Fantastic Four film set in the MCU.
Reed Richards a.k.a. Mister Fantastic
It looks like The Mandalorian fame may want to reconsider his decision after Marvel Comics added a heinous twist to Reed Richards’ powers. Mister Fantastic’s powers in Fantastic Four #14 are nothing short of horror. Richards elevated his stretching abilities to an insane extent that presents a gross take on one of the most intellectual superheroes.

Ben Grimm is mad. The ace pilot would do almost anything for his college pal Dr. Reed Richards, the super-genius who has designed an experimental rocket. But Ben worries about cosmic rays surrounding the planet and threatens to drop out of the project.
“Ben, we’ve got to take that chance,” interjects friend Sue Storm. “Unless we want the Commies to beat us to it.”
With that Ben takes up the mission. Because if there’s one thing that Benjamin J. Grimm hates, its Commies. Well, at least that’s what Ben hated in the 1960s. And so he joins Reed, Sue, and Sue’s brother Johnny on a trip into space, a trip that will expose them to cosmic rays, transforming Ben into the Thing, Reed into Mr. Fantastic, Sue into Invisible Girl, and Johnny into the Human Torch. Together, they will form the Fantastic Four.

Marvel Comics "Fantastic Four" #15, available January 2024, is written by Ryan North and illustrated by Ivan Fiorelli, with covers by Alex Ross, Francesco Mobili and Greg & Tim Hildebrandt:
"...I was created by mistake: a mind of minds, spread out across the vast swath of humanity, unseen but strong, stronger still every day. The world was confusing, but I learned. I grew. And then the 'Fantastic Four', the world’s greatest heroes — themselves led by the world’s smartest man — tried to kill me. They failed. But they showed me they were a threat.
"They showed me I needed to defend myself. They showed me that the Fantastic Four needed to die. And as I strengthen my control over the world, 'Reed Richards', 'Susan Storm', 'Ben Grimm', 'Johnny Storm' and 'Alicia Masters' will soon learn there’s nowhere they can hide… "

The MCU is pretty dang low on Avengers right now, but one theory surrounding Marvel’s new Secret Invasion series is that it’s about to bring back a lost member of the Og team.
While it might seem pretty “out there”, the idea could solve a few of the MCU’s current issues, some of which arguably began when the 2019 blockbuster Avengers: Endgame brought the Infinity Saga to a box office-slaying climax and killed off big hitters like Tony Stark/Iron Man and Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow.
The mantle of Captain America was passed from Steve Rogers to Sam Wilson, Bruce Banner went off to have some family-related Hulk adventures, and a massive new MCU saga soon got underway. Sam became the focus of his own TV series, as did Avenger Hawkeye, while Thor went on to lead another big budget movie in Thor: Love and Thunder,...

I have no idea why this very specific and distinctive book has such a generic-sounding title. I could make up stories of epic battles behind the scenes, with different factions jockeying for utterly different titles, and only able to agree, after months of internecine warfare, on this one. But that would be entirely fictional, if amusing.
What we have is Danger and Other Unknown Risks , a title which could apply to practically any adventure story ever told. This one is written by Ryan North and drawn by Erica Henderson, the team that did the Squirrel Girl comic for several years to vast acclaim and strong sales and the adoration of a huge number of fans, more of them small and/or female than was typical for a Marvel comic.
The cynical side of me assumes that they did Danger so they could have something similar that they would own; the...

Irony Point might not have wide name recognition just yet, but its projects, which include Netflix’s WGA Award-winning “I Think You Should Leave With Tim Robinson” and Marvel’s new scripted “Squirrel Girl” podcast, are attracting the attention of high-profile backers.
The banner, now almost 12 months into a three-year overall deal with Netflix, is headed by co-presidents Alex Bach and Daniel Powell. Their little company also has partnered with Endeavor Content and Broadway Video on recent projects.
Endeavor Content, Irony Point’s collaborator on Hulu dramedy “Life & Beth,” is a “behemoth” operating “in a budget space that we’ve previously not even come close to,” Powell tells Variety. “Being partners with them as the studio really allowed us to have our first experience in what I’d say is a different league, but one that we hope to continue in.”

So I have no idea if the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl series ended at #50 for actual economic reasons (slowing sales), for fake economic reasons (Marvel wanted to concentrate only on comics that can have ten different covers), or for real creative reasons. It may have even been a reason I’m not considering – perhaps the combined forces of global squirrels realized this comic was too close to reality for their liking, and they’ve used their squirrely wiles to suppress it.
But, for whatever reason, Unbeatable Squirrel Girl – at that point the longest-running Marvel comic – ended with issue #50, in January of last year.
The very last storyline was collected in this, the last collection: The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, Vol. 12: To All the Squirrels I’ve Loved Before . As with the previous few books, the creative team was writer Ryan North, artist Derek Charm, and color artist Rico Renzi, with a...

The ninth volume collecting The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl collects five issues from early 2018 and came out in late 2018, with yet another lightly modified “funny” song lyric for a title: Squirrels Fall Like Dominoes .
As usual, I got to it three years late, after the series ended.
This time out, regular series writer Ryan North and colorist Rico Renzi are joined by a new artist: Derek Charm, replacing Erica Henderson. Henderson had drawn the first thirty-one issues of the series, the short previous series, and an original Graphic Novel, which were probably as many Squirrel Girl pages as all previous artists put together. So this was kind of a big deal, especially since the Sg audience was proverbially heavily pre-teen and female, which as an audience is often not happy with change.
Charm is a cartoonier artist than Henderson, which is a nice change-up. Sg is a bit cartoony story-wise (if...

Any book with “new” in the title will age really badly: it’s just inherent. If what it’s trying to do is present something fresh and immediate, that will just be less compelling fifteen years later. No one can do anything about that effect.
So it’s a pretty quixotic thing to read Attitude 3: The New Subversive Online Cartoonists in 2021, since it’s a book from 2006 about a world that was fast-moving at that point and has only sped up since then. Attitude 3 was the last of the series — the first Attitude profiled new political cartoonists and the second one new “alternative” cartoonists”, and all of them were edited by Ted Rall, at a moment in his career when he seemed to be working more as a connector than he looks to be doing now.

So this is how it goes: two years ago I had the urge to re-read Slaughterhouse-Five, possibly Kurt Vonnegut’s best novel [1]. And I did . It was still a great novel; it was still deeply sad about humanity.
About a year later, a graphic novel adaptation of Slaughterhouse-Five came out. It was adapted by Ryan North, creator of Dinosaur Comics and longtime writer of the current, popular version of Squirrel Girl. It was illustrated by Albert Monteys, a Spanish cartoonist who has worked mostly in satire. And now I’ve read that version, too.
So, this time, I need to talk about the pictures, and the transformation of Vonnegut’s words on a page into a visual format. I’ve already said what I had to say about the story itself, about poor Billy Pilgrim’s fate – many of the things I wrote here two years ago I thought again...

Featuring an exclusive look at variant covers from the upcoming mini-series, here's your guide to Jughead's Time Police.
Back in the early 1990s, Archie Comics released an ambitious series of titles aimed at illustrating how the veteran indie publisher could tell different types of stories using their characters. These various books ranged from interesting failures to regrettable curiosites. Yet much like Marty McFly unleashing rock and roll at the Enchantment Under the Sea dance, one of these experiments was so far ahead of its, er, time that it would take a generation to pick up what Archie was throwing down.
That title was Jughead's Time Police.
Despite only running for a measly six issues, Jughead's Time Police foreshadowed the Archie creative renaissance that began a decade ago by telling a status quo-shattering story that pushed the parameters of these characters while maintaining what made them so lovable in the first place.

Some people read The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl for the girl power, the body positivity, the overall positivity, the young-readers friendliness, the focus on computer science, or the kooky take on the Marvel Universe. Not me, though.
(Other people may read it because they are crushing hard on Koi Boi, obsessed with Eric Henderson’s art, or totally in love with writer Ryan North’s bottom-of-the-page notes. But those aren’t what does it for me, either.)
No, I’m all about Brain Drain. Give me an existential brain-in-a-vat-in-a-robot-body, teetering on the edge of total nihilism and trying to live in the modern world, and I’m happy.
This sixth book of Doreen Green’s adventures, titled (not all that compactly) The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, Vol. 6: Who Run the World? Squirrels , has a whole bunch of Brain Drain in it, and so I like it very much. I trust the...

We’re going to be waiting for almost a year to find out what happened to the Marvel Cinematic Universe following Thanos’s snap, but for those craving the brand’s particular take on character-oriented superhero fun, a new franchise just launched courtesy of Disney Xd. “Marvel Rising: Initiation” features a majority-female line-up with a story that begins with the wrongfully accused Ghost-Spider defying the authorities, and fellow heroes Squirrel Girl and Ms. Marvel taking it upon themselves to bring her to justice.
Debuting initially as six shorts, now streaming on YouTube, “Initiation” will be followed up by “Secret Warriors,” a feature-length adventure this fall featuring the same characters, voiced by Dove Cameron, Milana Vayntrub, Kathreen Khavari, Chloe Bennet, Kim Raver, Kamil McFadden, and Steven Weber, among others.
Both the shorts and the feature were scripted by comic book and animation writer Mairghread Scott, whose previous credits include the animated “Guardians of the Galaxy” series,...

The parade of odd would-be world-conquerors continues in this collection of Squirrel Girl’s exploits — I almost said “latest collection,” but I’m still running almost two years behind, so it’s not. She hasn’t turned grimdark in the meantime, has she? That would be sad.
Anyway, in the five issues from late 2016 collected in (deep breath) The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, Vol. 5: Like I’m the Only Squirrel in the World (exhale), our intrepid Squirrel Girl, Doreen Green, spends three issues battling a supervillain who breaks apart into smaller versions of himself when punched — something which makes it very difficult for the heroes of the Marvel Universe to apply their usual problem-solving heuristic [1] to.
Doreen occasionally uses other solutions to problems — oh, she can punch, too, she wouldn’t last long in a Marvel comic if she couldn’t — so this becomes her problem to fix. Also, it’s her comic,...

I’ve stopped reading the letter columns entirely at this point. Sorry, Ryan and Erica, but they don’t make much sense in a collection to begin with, and I don’t really care to see lots of stories about your young fans, cute though they may be. For what it’s worth, I do glance at the pictures to see various people’s cute daughters dressed up in homemade Squirrel Girl costumes, and I love that that is a thing that happens in the world.
But I’m here for the stories, so I’ll focus on that. I hope you understand.
Here in the fourth volume — under the run-on title The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, Vol. 4: I Kissed a Squirrel and I Liked It — I started to realize that this is more obviously an all-ages comic than I’d pigeonholed it as. But writer Ryan North and artist...

Whenever the next big superhero movie comes around, you tend to see the comic book publishers place more focus on characters set to appear on the silver screen. In the case of Avengers: Infinity War, it only makes sense that Thanos be given his time in the sun.
Now, as you know, we tend to see annuals be released in the latter portions of a given month. Often telling self-contained stories or kicking off or concluding a story arc, these oversized specials tend to give True Believers real bang for their buck.
As it turns out, Marvel will continue shining the spotlight on the Mad Titan this spring with the release of Thanos Annual #1, which will see “Cosmic Ghost Rider narrate all of Thanos’ heinous exploits. And who better to guide you through such deeds than the newest twisted ally to enter the Marvel Universe?”

Above you'll find the first comic that artist Bill Watterson has created since he retired Calvin & Hobbes in 1995. It is actually a poster that he created for a documentary film called Stripped. The doc explores the creation of these comic strips and their transition from newspapers to digital. It features interviews with the creators of Garfield, Cathy, For Better or For Worse, The Oatmeal, Penny Arcade, and even Watterson himself, who rarely gives interviews.
Watterson spoke to The Washington Post and explained the poster he did for the movie:
“Given the movie’s title and the fact that there are few things funnier than human nudity, the idea popped into my head largely intact. The film is a big valentine to comics, so I tried to do something really cartoon-y. I had thought of having it colored with off-registered printing dots like newspaper comics, but Dave asked if I’d paint it instead,...
